Orphans
***Aubrey's POV***
Now that I am putting on weight and actually thriving thru our pregnancy, I am back to work. Persephone was ecstatic. She said I had perfect timing.
Today, all of us Royal Warriors are headed to a small village in Haiti. Persephone and Makil briefed us on the carnage that was devastating the small country.
A trafficking ring had targeted the orphanage. Children had gone missing and someone from the inside was at the bottom of it. This was our job. We were to find the offenders and rescue the children.
As we made our way thru the sweltering streets of the poverty stricken nation, beads of sweat matted my fine hairs at the nape of my neck. I am on the final weeks of my pregnancy and this was causing my heat flashes to strengthen.
"Are you okay parvulus?" Darius asks.
"I'm okay. It's just warm." I whimper.
Darius pulls out a cool water bottle and unscrews the cap before handing it to me. Ethan follows by handing one to Abi.
When we enter the orphanage, I immediately walk back out. I turn to the side of the mud building and puke my guts up.
The smell of bodily fluids is overwhelming. Gnats swarm and flies cover the surface.
I regain my composure and hold a dry cloth over my nose. I have to get thru this.
We slowly make our way down the dirt paths that act as flooring in the run down orphanage. There is no air circulation. There is no running water. The place is packed with children of every age. The smell of old blood permeates the thick air.
I see helpers and coordinators throughout the establishment. There are nurses attending to sick babies and medics patching up wounds. Non-sterile tents are set up to assist with the more debilitating illnesses.
My heart weeps and tears track my dry, sand stung cheeks. I couldn't look a foot in front of me without witnessing sorrow.
These poor babies.
We walked into a meeting hall which consisted of fold out tables and chairs in a mud hut. Darius motions for us ladies to sit. I refuse the offer with a small smile and a shake of my head.
The lady before us explains the circumstances. 3000 kids pass thru these clay walls each year. Some leave on their own. Some succumb to illness. Most stay until they are able to leave. Some simply vanish.
There is not a record keeping procedure in place. Most children are given names upon arrival. The ages are guessed unless the child is born into the orphanage.
Some suffer from birth defects. Others are orphans because their parents have fallen prey to disease. Some are abandoned. Most are malnourished.
I'm literally sick. My stomach lurches and my mouth pools with warm bile. My skin is aching. My head is pounding and I am fighting the urge to flee.
I chant to myself.
You must help them. You can do this. You were born for this.
I listen to the details. I store away the important information. I begin to formulate my plans while the administration staff continue to clue us in.
As I stand there, taking in information, Amare starts stirring restlessly. She is scratching and pacing at my mind.
"What's wrong?" I ask Amare.
"Nothing's right." Amare whines.
"We will fix this." I promise.
Amare continues her assault on the walls of our link. My spirit stirs. My back stiffens. I feel pangs of pain rake thru my bones. I let out a small yelp of pain.
"Luna?" Jackson rushes to my side.
"There is another room." I mind link Jackson.
"Where?" Jackson asks.
"I don't know. I feel it. Something is happening, right now." I plead.
"Show us the rest of the building." Jackson demands with authority.
The staff looks at one another and I see their eyes shifting between each other.
"NOW!" I shout in my Luna tone.
Darius jumps back and I see every eye in the room land on me.
"I said NOW!" I reaffirm while my body trembles with ripples of anger.
Amare is pushing me back as I fight to keep control.
The staff stutter excuses and I lose my cool.
My wings spread in an eight foot berth. They shake out as my feathers fall into place.
I storm the halls of the orphanage kicking down every obstacle in my way. People jump out of my path as seething currents of indignation pour off my form.
I feel the army of warriors that flank me. I hear the scattering feet of workers hurrying around me.
I look thru the whole building before Amare pushes me back outside. The sun glares down at me and I scan the surrounding buildings. I listen and feel for the information I need.
I stomp furiously over to a metal building in the corner of the compound. It looks like a storage shed. There are locks but they don't open from the outside.
I don't wait for help. I pull my wings back and let their power surge thru my limbs before I extend my arms. My palms meet sizzling metal as I push the door straight off the hinges. My hands sting with the burn of seared flesh. Pain radiates thru my shoulders from the force of my shove.
A large gasp causes my attention to rip my head to the left.
Standing there, in all their demonic stature, three workers were huddled around a crate.
Darius pushes past me, flanked by Jackson. Ethan and Bryan quickly take their places beside and behind him.
The crate whimpers and I growl out my distress.
The men immediately restrain the workers. Claire steps beside me with Luce flanking my other side. Abi falls into step behind me, my wings protecting her pregnant body.
I slowly move towards the crate.
A small child. One, two, three. Three small children in a wooden crate meant for cargo.
I rip the top completely off the crate before I grab the smallest boy. Luce clings to another boy and Claire grabs the little girl.
Their fear is saturating the air and I see fucking red.
I turn and hand the small boy off to Abi.
I am pissed.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" I shout as the girls pull the children out of the building.
"Ethan, Bryan, Darius. Secure the grounds. Jackson stay." I demand.
No one issues one word as everyone scatters.
The three asshole workers look as if they will shit themselves.
"Aubrey. Luna. Calm down. The babies." Jackson whispers.
"This is calm." I grit thru my teeth.
Jackson whistles as he throws his hands up in surrender and stands behind me. No doubt, ready to stop me if necessary.
"Smart man." Amare chuckles.
I walk up to the male worker. My right hook lands right on his nose with a satisfying crunch.
"You broke my nose you fucking bitch." He yells.
His scream filled the air as my kick landed in his groin.
"Don't disrespect me." I bark.
"Who is in charge?" I order.
One lady points to the other as the man throws his eyes to the side at the same lady.
"What's your name, you piece of shit?" I ask.
"Mary Catherine." She whimpers.
"Wrong!" I smirk.
"Excuse me." She asks incredulously.
"You aren't worthy of a name so sweet." I bite my lip as I think.
Without warning my hand grips her throat and my fingers tighten around her neck. Her breathing hitches and my talons dig into her flesh. Blood pools around my nails and my body shakes with disgust. I lift her into the air as I constrict her airways.
"Luna." Jackson warns.
I shoot him a warning glare.
"This is a portion of the fear you have inflicted on these innocent souls. You are a despicable, inhumane creature." I crack my neck before she falls to the floor grasping her pierced neck.
"Get Alpha." I order.
I walk to the second lady and grab her hand. She is trembling and she smells like desperation.
"What role do you play?" I whisper threateningly.
"Paperwork, ma'am." The nameless filth answers with a trembling lip.
I spit at her feet in disgust.
"You all make me so sick. You were trusted. You were responsible to nurture these babies. You were trusted with a precious gift. Yet, you chose to do harm rather than good." I heave my labored words at the three vile tormentors.
"What did you gain from your betrayal?" I question.
"Money, lots of money." The groaning man announces.
"Money you won't live to spend." I promise.
My hand flew out from my body, subconsciously. A sickening thud echoed thru the walls as I landed the slap to the unnamed lady's face. She shrieked and I felt satisfied.
"Aubrey!" Darius rushes to me, wrapping his arms around me to calm me down.
"What?" I ask with no false calm.
"It's your call." He whispers to me as he and Jackson rub calming hands down my arms.
"Death. No mercy." I wink towards the accused.
They gasp and I wave them off as I leave the small torture shed to finish my assignment.
"Are you okay Luna?" Jackson spins me around and embraces me.
"No. I'm mad as hell." I confess.
"Please calm down Aubear. You are scaring me." He whispers as he holds my head into his chest.
"I'm not scared. I'm livid." I shake my head. My body is hot and I feel fire emanating from my skin.
I walk thru the orphanage shouting orders.
I demand the children to be relocated. I demand the workers be interrogated. I start spelling out directions like a manual. Buildings will be destroyed. New buildings will be raised. Every child will be accounted for.
As we wrap up there, I demand a meeting with the President and Prime Minister of Haiti. Ethan works on getting it scheduled. Brian starts coordinating construction crews. My ladies work on having the kids brought to temporary shelter.
By the end of the day, I am exhausted. We all are. We spent hours working on the case and we had a meeting set up for tomorrow morning with the heads of the country.
Once the kids are safe and Darius has delivered his form of punishment, we head home for the evening.
When we arrive we all disperse to take showers. Then we meet in the kitchen for dinner.
"Aubrey, what happened?" Claire asks as she stares at me in disbelief.
"I snapped." I shrug.
"You scared the shit out of us." Brian looks at me like I beheaded a puppy.
"I'm a Luna, a mother, a victim. I'm an angel of protection. I'm fucking human. They were filth. I did what was necessary." I argue.
"No, no. You are taking this wrong." Abi soothes.
"Aubrey, we are not chastising you. We are actually standing here dumbfounded. You never show aggression." Ethan corrects.
"Baby, you were magnificent. A little violent, but I'm amazed." Darius laughs.
"All the training paid off." I shrug.
"The only thing that worried me was you shifting. I was scared you might shift in anger and hurt our pups." Darius promises.
"Amare was well aware of it. I promise, we were not going to shift abruptly. We know we have to be careful shifting." I soothe my protectors.
"Our Luna is badass." Luce high fives me and I giggle.
"This Luna is starving." I groan.
"Food time for the pups." Abi squeals.
"What do you want to eat?" Darius asks.
"Chinese food. Jalapeños. Pizza. Coke. Fried Chicken." I grin.
"Aubrey, you have to pick one." Brian laughs.
"Why?" I whine.
"Because that's too much food." Claire laughs.
I glare at her.
"I'm feeding three people." I argue.
"Yes you are baby. We will get you whatever you need." Darius presses his beautiful plump lips to mine. I forget what we were talking about as soon as his tongue slips in my mouth.
I moan loudly as his lips swallow my purrs.
"Okay. Okay. You can have all that food." Claire rolls her eyes.
I jump from Darius grasp.
"Yay! Food!!!!" Abi and I clap.
