2. Deal? What deal? No, I am not.
I was sitting on a park bench reading a book. There were children playing around. I looked up as a little girl of about five came up to me.
"Hello!" I smiled.
"Please put on your seatbelts." She said with a serious look.
I looked at her confused.
"Seatbelts?" I asked her.
"All passengers are requested to put on their seatbelts." She said again.
"Hey, little kid I—" I was about to say something when someone budged me.
I woke up startled. "What?" I looked around confused. I was at a park, where am I now?
"Did you sleep well?" Someone said.
"Huh?"I turned around.
I stared at the man sitting next to me wondering where I'd seen him.
"Back to earth, Natalie." He waved a hand in front of my face.
He knows my name? I closed my eyes and shook my head to clear my mind. I looked around one more time and then I realized where I was. I must have fallen asleep.
"Sorry, I was out of my mind." I said to Chase feeling embarrassed.
"I know." He teased and chuckled.
All passengers are requested to put on their seatbelts. We are touching down at the Oklahoma International Airport in ten minutes. The announcement came.
"Seatbelts." I muttered remembering the dream, feeling stupid. I decided never to sleep again during journeys. Who knows I was sleep talking. It's just so embarrassing.
"Seatbelt." Chase told me as he buckled his own.
"Huh? Yeah." I buckled my own.
"So, we're finally here." He smiled.
"Home." I nodded and smiled back. Then a thought crossed my mind. I knew I was finally home and I'm gald. But. But how do I tell Chase I threw away his paper? How do I tell him I ruined his company? My heart started to beat, so loud that I felt it would fall out of my mouth. Keep calm Natalie. Keep calm. I took a heavy breath. Chase turned to look at me with raised brows. I gave him a lop sided smile which I knew he noticed.
"Everything's fine?" He asked.
"Yeah." I replied quickly.
"Okay."He nodded.
~×~
I collected my bags and took a deep breath as I waited for Chase as he collected his. I didn't have to tell him. He wouldn't know. But I have to. He'd helped me come home. I owed him. I don't know him so well as to how he'd react, but whatever maybe, I have to.
We were walking towards the exit when I suddenly stopped and took a deep breath.
"Chase?" I looked at him.
"What?" He looked concerned.
"Um, I —I," I stuttered.
"Are you alright? Are you sick?" He asked. We've known each other for only about eleven hours but we'd become a good friends. He looked really concerned. What will he think of me? Come on. Tell him right away. Anyway, you're not seeing him again. Who cares about what he thinks.
"I threw it." I said closing my eyes.
He did not say a thing. I popped one eye to see him looking at me with confusion. I sighed.
"Okay. Here's the thing. I found the paper in my bag and I didn't knew what it was so I threw it in the trash can." I waited for his reply. He was still looking at me confused, like I was speaking an alien language.
"What paper?" He asked.
"Um, the one you were looking for, in the plane?" I said. It was more of a question. I studied his face when I didn't get an answer.
"Look, I'm sorry. I —I didn't knew it was imp—," I began when I saw his expression changed from confusion to anger. But he didn't let me complete it.
"WHAT?" He said it too loud, the people passing by turned their heads towards us.He pulled me by my arms and dragged me to a corner where there were no people.
"You what?" He asked me again knowing exactly what I was going to say.
"I'm really sor—,"
"Sorry." He said disgusted."Do you even know what you've done?" His eyes flared in anger. I felt like I was shrinking. Shrinking into a little puppy at his feet.
"Chase, I —,"
"You, all you know of me is my name." He pointed his finger at me. "Nothing else. And what you've done is going to cost me my career. I could sue you for that. What were you thinking? You're gonna pay for this." He glared at me. "I was the one who gave you the ticket to get here. You could have at least thought that I may have passed it to you along with the ticket. Oh! I'm sorry but I just realized that you don't have any common sense. Do you?" He said sarcastically.
I hadn't thought that he would be so angry. I wished I had just left after picking up my bags. Why did I ever tell him?
"I'm sorry." I whispered starring at my feet. "I really am. I promise I'd do whatever you want me to. Please."
Whatever you want me to? Nat, what's wrong with you?
"Whatever. I hope we never meet again. " He waved his hand and left me there standing in the corner.
Phew. That was close.
I dragged my bags behind me and walked towards the exit slowly looking for Chase but there was no sign of him. I sighed.
I walked out of the airport, head down looking at my feet, not looking up. Then I bumped into someone.
"I'm sorr—y," I looked up and saw Chase standing in front of me.
"It's okay baby." He pulled me into a hug.
I stood there shocked. What? Baby? I tried to break free from him. But he only put his arms around me. Tighter.
"Don't move." He commanded. "You said you would do whatever I want you to. So just hug me back, smile at the camera and get us out of here." He said in my ears. It was only then that I realized we were surrounded by people taking pictures of us. The press. They were reporters, from what I saw.
I had no other option but to do as he said.I hugged him back and the smiled at the camera. Then someone from the press asked me a question.
"Excuse me Miss, are you his mistress?"
My jaw dropped. "What?" I felt my cheeks turn red. Mistress? Oh my god. Seriously? I opened my mouth to say something but Chase put his arms around me and squeezed my arm.
"Um, no. She's my fiancée,Natalie." He coughed. I smiled. "And as you can see we just arrived from a ten hour journey, we're tired. So if you'd allow us." With that he pulled me with him and walked to a car. He stuffed my bags into it.
"What are you doing?"
"Keep quiet. Do as I say." He replied curtly.
"I ha—" I was silenced by the dangerous glare he gave me.
He indicated me to get into the car and I reluctantly went inside. What have I gotten myself into?
"What's happening?" I asked as soon as we got out of sight from the press. He did not answer but keep his eyes on the road.
"I'm asking you what's happening?" I demanded.
"Quiet. And let me think." He snapped back.
God. I leaned back on my seat.
Chase spoke up after ten minutes of silence. "We have to make a deal."
"Okay. No. WHAT?"
"A deal." He repeated calmly.
"What deal?"
He explained what was happening and what I had to do. I had to sign a contract.
"What? I'm not signing any contract. I'm not making any deal. I am not." I folded my arms and kept my eyes on the road.
"Well, you don't understand. Do you?" He said smirking.
"Understand what?" I questioned.
"Well, you have to agree to the deal or you go to jail."
"Jail? What for?"
"I could sue you for what you did."
"Oh really? Now who got us into this situation?" I glared at him.
"I thought you said you'd do whatever I ask you to." He reminded me my words.
"Of course I did. But not to this stupid deal."
"You have to." He said sternly.
"No. Never."
He suddenly stopped the car and I hit my head.
"Ouch! What are you doing? Why did you stop the car?"
"Get out."
"What?"
"Get out." He shouted.
"No."
He got out from the car and pulled me out too. And then took my bags out, got into the car and drove off.
What?
I stood there in the middle of nowhere with my bags at my feet. Fine. Who wants to sign a deal with you? No one. You'll never get the deal. I mentally cursed Chase. I picked my bags and walked for about five minutes. Then I realized where I was. I. Don't. Know. Jackpot.
