ELEVEN
26th February
"Are you sure you gave them the right photographs?"
"Jungkook, that's the seventh time you've asked me that." Tessa's bored eyes rolled at him. "Just chill, okay?"
"As the photographer, I need to make sure that the right photos of our models were sent to the stylists." Jungkook was giving the presentation on his laptop a final check.
"Yes, yes, I know."
He rubbed the skin below his lower lip, staring at the slides on his screen.
"And the theme? Th-"
"Jungkook, I double- no, triple checked everything myself, after we discussed everything." Tessa said to him. "It'll be okay, alright? You've done this before."
"But this is different!" he shut his laptop and stared at her. "This is the first time our company is going to have models from our own agency! It's a huge deal! And I do not want to mess it up."
Jungkook wasn't nervous, he was just a bit overwhelmed with the responsibility on his shoulders.
"You'll do fine, just think of it as all of our other meetings. You don't have the audacity to make a mistake. You'll be fine, okay?"
He nodded his head subtly and stacked a couple of photos together into a file.
There was a knock at the door and a man peeped in.
"Jungkook, Tessa, everyone is here."
"Even Namjoon?" he asked.
"Yes, Jungkook. Mr. Kim is here as well."
"Right-" he got up and gathered his things. "-tell everyone we'll be right there."
The man nodded and left them.
Tessa put on her blazer and helped Jungkook with the files and documents, while he grabbed his coat and laptop, to head downstairs to the meeting room.
As soon as they stepped out of Jungkook's office, Tessa noticed the man's expression change. His tense eyes were a bit more relaxed and determined, his teeth had quit biting his lips and he seemed to have turned into a much calm and focused person.
"There it is-" Tessa stated modestly, as she walked beside him. "-that game face of yours."
"Game face?" Jungkook asked back innocently, like he had no idea.
"The face that you make right before a meeting."
"I still feel the same though." he looked at her preposterously. "My heart feels like it's bubbling up to my throat."
Once the elevator stopped, they made their way down the deep royal blue hallway, to the meeting room, where they were greeted by an array of people from various departments of the company, with the CEO, Kim Namjoon, sitting at the head of the table.
"Ah! Jungkook, Tessa!" Namjoon greeted them. "Good to see you both. Please, take your seats, we shall start the meeting in another ten minutes. Till then, please be ready with your ideas and presentations."
Overall, the meeting had gone well for Jungkook. His, and his department's collective ideas for photo shoots and other projects were taken in with great appeal and fascination.
Although, when collaborating with the fashion department, their joint plan was at stake by the budget they had been promised. Their estimated expenses exceeded that of the fixed budget assigned to them. Now, the finance department tends to be very strict when it comes to the fixed budgets of each group. They simply cannot take money from another department to fulfill the needs of the other. It would create an imbalance and make a little bit of a mess.
Though, Jungkook took a stand on the issue and promised to work on the budget given. He didn't think if that would work out to be fine or not, he'd just have to wait and see what would happen and face any problems in the near future, head on.
With that issue resolved, the meeting got over on a positive note, with a lot of satisfied looks and optimistic hopes for the company.
"This was quite great." Namjoon stretched. "Work hard, Jungkook, you've got a lot on your shoulders this time."
Jungkook nodded his head. "Yes, I will."
The two waited outside the room for Tessa.
"I'm glad that this got over today." Namjoon smiled tiredly.
"What do you mean?"
"I didn't want this to extend to another meeting, I'm relieved that we were able to finalise things today."
"Why? Are you not free later?"
"Wait, I didn't tell you?"
Jungkook made a confused face at Namjoon. "About what exactly?"
"Our honeymoon. Didn't I tell you?"
"You never remember to tell me anything this important."
"I am pretty sure I told you that Jin and I will be leaving tomorrow."
"I don't remember that."
"Oh, he did tell you." Tessa said from behind him.
Jungkook turned around. "He did?"
"Yep, right in front of me."
Namjoon raised an eyebrow and smiled subtly. "See? I did tell you." he looked at his watch. "Okay, I should go now, or else Jin will chew me out alive for not helping him pack."
"Enjoy your honeymoon." Tessa waved at him.
When Namjoon left, Jungkook and Tessa headed up to the office to finalise their options and layout a much more organised version of all their documents.
"Aren't you going to go to Serendipity for lunch today?" Tessa asked, as she matched model photographs to their given information into separate files.
"I'll probably eat here today." Jungkook answered as he typed on his laptop.
Tessa examined the pictures in her hands. "So you won't meet him?"
"What do you mean by that?" he looked up from his screen. "We don't make prior arrangements to meet up."
"I'm just asking, because you both end up meeting almost everyday."
"Those are just coincidences."
"Oh, coincidences. Of course." she smirked as she arranged Taehyung's file.
"The types of coincidences that happen everyday."
Jungkook ignored her.
After their meal of peanut butter sandwiches, every hour or so, Tessa and Jungkook were done with their jobs after a gruelling five hours, working non-stop to get everything done without delaying anything. But in fact, they were done way before they had anticipated, so they decided to leave early, at around six in the evening.
Jungkook had plans to head to his family house in the village, to celebrate a very special day, to celebrate his grandparents' wedding anniversary. So, before the half an hour drive to his place, he stopped by Daejung's flower shop, where he met Jimin.
"Oh, hello, Jungkook." Jimin smiled at him in the most mocking way.
Because Jungkook and Taehyung mostly met up by sheer coincidence at Serendipity, Jimin missed no chance of teasing Jungkook. He'd end up teasing him for something completely unrelated to Taehyung, but managed to get away with it and annoy Jungkook.
Jimin stood with Haewon in the shop, as he looked at some flowers for his cafe. When Jungkook passed by him, Jimin started gossiping along with Haewon almost immediately. The two had become gossip buddies about Jungkook's life, with Jimin being the one who gave her all the hot tea about Jungkook and his new crush.
As much as Jungkook liked the two and would have wanted to talk, he'd rather not become their target. So, he went to the one who he trusted, the one who was more calmer and unbothered.
"Hey, Daejung!"
Daejung looked up from the bouquet he was arranging. "Jungkook!" he smiled. "Here for Mrs. And Mr. Jeon's wedding anniversary flowers?"
Jungkook smiled back. "Yep."
"So-" he walked up from behind the counter. "-what would you like?"
"You're the florist! You know the meanings!" Jungkook touched a few flowers in a tall vase. "Enlighten me with your vast knowledge about these lovely, delicate beauties."
"Are you getting poetic now?" he raised an eyebrow.
"No." Jungkook said back quickly.
"Alright. So, I was thinking, how about some yellow roses?" Daejung lead him to where they were kept. "Maybe pair them with a few violets? The yellows signify happiness, and the violets, faith and simplicity." he caressed the two flowers. "They're an ideal gift for anniversaries."
Jungkook gazed at the flowers, looking around for more.
"I heard you found someone you like?" Daejung asked him calmly.
"I didn't find him, it was by chance. I only noticed him because I wanted to capture him." Jungkook stopped, but then realised what he had said, sounded wrong. "Through the camera.....capture his photograph."
"Right." Daejung nodded.
They were silent for a while, with only Jimin and Haewon's voices being heard from the front of the shop.
"What?" Jungkook asked.
"What, what?" Daejung asked back.
"You're making that face........as if you want to say something more."
"I don't." he said back casually. "So, should I make a bunch for the roses and the violets?"
Jungkook looked back at the flowers and nodded.
Daejung plucked a few from the vase and went on to the counter to arrange them.
Jungkook followed him and leaned on the counter, waiting, while admiring the flowers in front, arranged in all their glory, glowing in various warm colours as the yellow-orange of the setting sun's rays entered the shop from the main doors.
The small room felt heavenly. It had a very peaceful atmosphere. The various scents of every flower whiffing past his nose, merging into one, creating an aroma Jungkook was all too familiar with, yet it felt new every time he walked into the shop.
The soft earthiness in the air, the colours of the petals reflecting against the light, the mood slowly getting more pleasant.....it brought Jungkook's mind to think of Taehyung.
He found it a bit weird, about how everything in that shop reminded him of Taehyung, despite it having no connection to him whatsoever.
"I also heard that he auditioned for your company's modelling line?"
Jungkook turned his head back. "You heard a lot of things." he huffed jokingly. "What else did you hear?"
"Hmm." Daejung hummed as he brought all the flower stems together to tie them into a neat knot. "He probably got selected, right?"
Jungkook didn't respond, he just smiled.
Daejung couldn't help but notice him observing the flowers, getting lost in them.
"You know-" Daejung wrapped the flowers and tied a thick bold bow around them. "Purple flowers signify success and feelings of admiration."
"What?"
"Your eyes wouldn't stop staring at those purple flowers." his eyes pointed at the purple coloured flowers, which Jungkook had had his eyes stuck on. "Do they remind you of someone?"
Jungkook's chest tightened as he took in a congested breath. His face felt hot all of a sudden.
"N-no." he turned around to face him.
Daejung smiled and handed the yellow-violet bouquet to him. "It's him, isn't it?"
Jungkook averted his eyes to get some money out of his wallet. Daejung couldn't help but smile innocently at him.
"Here you go." he handed Daejung the money.
"Thank you. Give my happiest wishes to Mrs. And Mr. Jeon."
"I will. Thank you."
On his way out, Haewon caught him.
"Taehyung's his name, huh?" she folded her arms and leaned against the shop's doors. "I'm just glad things between you and Susan didn't work out."
"They weren't going to work out anyway." Jungkook smiled a goodbye and passed by the door. "Now, before you start ranting about Taehyung at me, and give me advice, I'm going to go."
Haewon frowned. "I'm not going to do all that."
Jungkook stopped walking. "You're not?"
"As much as I'd love to.....No, no, I won't."
"Oh...That's-um....not quite like you."
"Yes, it's not. Anyway, because I have nothing much to say, do wish your grandparents a very happy anniversary from my side."
"Will do." he started to walk towards his car.
"And do talk about this Taehyung of yours! Jimin's been the only one giving me updates for the past four days! Don't worry, I won't tease you...well, maybe a little is fine, right?"
Jungkook managed a small chuckle. "Sure."
"Are you gonna tell him, or is it going to be-"
"Everyone seems to be asking me that." he laughed. "The second one." he chose.
"I see." the woman nodded her head slowly. "Is it because of what I think it is?"
Jungkook looked around uneasily, his fingers were fidgeting around the bouquet. "Yes, I guess so."
Haewon pat his shoulder. "I know you're going to do the right thing, hmm? It's your call. But, don't make any rash decisions, okay?" she tilted her head and gave a concerned, loving look. "You know what I mean, right?"
Jungkook looked back at her and held her hand on his shoulder. "Yes, Haewon, I do." he held her fingers and squeezed them. "I know."
The sun was slowly setting and Jungkook was headed to his village, passing the city's borders, into the smaller town that led to the vast open fields. The road eventually got narrower, and the mountains on the other side seemed to get closer. The air was clean and the scene, more green.
He was going back to where he'd spent a good, fulfilling, seventeen years of his life.
On reaching his home, the dogs were the first ones to run to him from the pastures at the back of his house. Amongst the two big Border Collies, Luna and Sol, there was a third new dog who ran up to greet him.
This third dog was a small, he was a black and tan Pomeranian. He was full of energy, barking cheekily as he tried competing with the other two dogs to get Jungkook's attention, while frantically jumping with his tiny legs.
"Hey there, Luna, Sol-" he bent down to pat the two. "-who are you, little guy?" he grinned at the small dog and caressed his fur. "Did grandpa adopt a new dog without telling me, Sol?" he looked at the black and white Border Collie, who just barked back in response.
So, Jungkook picked the small package, the Pomeranian, under his arm and headed inside, with the other two dogs by his heels.
"Grandpa! Grandma!" Jungkook called out as he entered the house.
"Jungkookie!" a sweet voice called from his left. It was his mother. "Looks like you found Yeontan!" she soothed her hands on the dog's head.
"That's what he's named?" Jungkook still believed that he was a new addition to the family.
"Cute, isn't he?"
Jungkook looked at the pocket sized dog and cradled him like a baby. "He is."
"Oh, Jungkook!!"
Jungkook heard his grandmother's voice from behind him. He turned around, grinning wide, only to see his grandfather there too.
He hurried to them and pulled the two into a big hug, with Yeontan in one hand, and the bouquet of flowers in the other.
"Happy anniversary!" he wished them softly.
The three hugged in the warmth, while the small dog whimpered a little. Jungkook jerked back. "Oh, I'm sorry, little guy! Forgot you were in my arms!"
"So you met Yeontan!" his grandfather laughed.
"You didn't have to adopt another dog, Grandpa! Aren't Luna and Sol enough as sheepdogs?"
"Jungkook, Yeontan's a Pomeranian, not a herding dog! But who told you we adopted him?"
Jungkook's smile dropped. "So, you didn't adopt him?"
Just then, Jungkook's ears picked up a voice coming from the kitchen, a quite deep and familiar voice.
"YEONTAN!" the voice called out. "TAN-AH!"
His grandfather turned a bit and yelled back. "TAEHYUNG! YEONTAN'S HERE!"
'T-Taehyung?' Jungkook thought. 'What in good gracious is he doing at my house?'
A few footsteps trotted on the wooden floor towards them.
Jungkook's breath started to get heavy, his heart started thumping like a drum against his chest.
'There is no way that Taehyung is at my house......That's right! It must be someone else with the same name as him!'
Oh, he was wrong.
It was the same Taehyung. The same Kim Taehyung he knew.
Taehyung emerged from behind a wall and froze when he lay eyes on Jungkook.
Jungkook gulped slightly and licked his dry lips. What was in front of him, was a whole new look on Taehyung. He wore baggy clothes - oversized straight dark bottoms, a white full sleeve shirt, and sneakers. The collar of his shirt was quite wide, and his slightly tanned honey-skin was peaking out for attention.
"Jungkook?" his tone was a bit softer than usual.
"Taehyung." Jungkook said back.
The family looked at both of them, as Yeontan jumped from Jungkook's arms and ran back to his companion.
"You both know each other?" his grandmother asked.
"Y-yeah." Jungkook answered. "He's uh- actually.....he auditioned for modelling at the agency."
"Is this the new thing that you talked about on the phone?" his mother asked.
"Yeah."
"Well-" Jungkook's grandfather walked to Taehyung and pat his back slightly. "-As you both already know each other, this makes things even better. You should stay for dinner, Taehyung!"
Taehyung waved his hand politely. "No, I couldn't. I need to get going-"
"Oh come on, lad! It's just dinner!"
Taehyung smiled awkwardly as the other family members tried insisting on him to stay for dinner. He looked at Jungkook, probably asking him what he should do. But Jungkook just smiled and shrugged his shoulders. So, Taehyung gave up and said yes.
"Dinner's up!" Jungkook's dad called out from the kitchen. "Could someone come and help me?"
"I'll go!" Jungkook took the opportunity to leave the room. He placed the bouquet in his grandmother's hands and rushed to his father.
"Welcome, Jungkook!" his father greeted him, without really looking up.
"Hello to you too!" Jungkook put his arm around his shoulder and looked at the food. "Okay, what all do you want me to take to the table?"
"Start with the cutlery, I'll handle the bigger dishes."
In no time, the feast was laid out, everyone was at the dining table and the cake was cut. Soon, as the family created conversation, the topic that came by almost every family dinner, decided to emerge to give Jungkook a hard time.
"Now, tell me, Kookie."
Jungkook cut a slice from his steak. "Yes, grandpa?"
The man on the other side of the table looked up at him as he poked a piece of meat onto his fork. "When in the world's name are we going to get to see our son-in-law?"
Jungkook's fork stopped mid-air before the meat could reach his mouth. He glanced at Taehyung beside him, who seemed rather interested in the upcoming drama.
"Grandpa-" he cleared his throat. "- I feel that it's not really the time to talk about this."
"It's our wedding anniversary, we can talk about whatever we want... right, Siyeon?" the grandfather turned to his daughter.
"You can do whatever you want, dad." Jungkook's mother smiled.
"Mom!" Jungkook complained, while Taehyung just giggled.
"Your grandfather isn't wrong, Jungkook." his grandmother joined the conversation. "I'm an aging woman, Kookie! I want to see my daughter's son getting married before I leave!"
"And where exactly are you going to go?" her husband stopped her and pointed his fork at her. "You're not going anywhere without me!"
To stop the awkward conversation, Jungkook's father spoke up. "Okay, okay...Mom, dad, stop. You're making Taehyung feel a bit awkward."
The Jeon family looked at him. He was just laughing, with a wide smile spread across his face. Jungkook's eyes wouldn't budge, he wouldn't even blink as he looked at him.
"No, please! I don't find this awkward at all!" he controlled his laugh and calmed down a bit. "I'm just glad I said yes to this dinner. I don't think I've been in between such a warm, loving family in the past ten years!"
After dinner, Jungkook helped clean the dishes with his father, while the others waited in the living room, and Taehyung, outside on the porch towards the back of the house.
"It's been a while since we all met for dinner, no wonder they had to pick on you again." his father laughed as he rinsed the plates.
"They really do love making fun about this topic." Jungkook laughed back slightly, wiping the dishes dry. "I don't mind it usually.... but did they have to mention it in front of Taehyung?"
His dad smirked. "He said he didn't mind it."
"That's not the point, dad!"
Mr. Jeon turned off the water and looked at his son. "Is there something going on between the two of you?"
"No." he said back quickly.
"I see." he hummed a bit and then spoke again. "But you've got some feelings for him, right?"
"I never said that, dad."
"Well-" he picked a tray of cake slices. "-your eyes did."
Jungkook looked up, and his father just smiled back.
"Am I seriously that obvious?" he groaned in a whisper as he took a plate of cake.
"Maybe....but I'm just very observant." saying that, his father headed off to the rest of the family.
Jungkook made his way to the porch, where Taehyung was.
He quietly walked next to him and sat down a foot or two beside him.
"The stars are beautiful tonight, aren't they?" Taehyung looked up as he talked. Yeontan sat in between his crossed legs, with his head resting on his knee.
"Yeah, they are." Jungkook replied softly. But he wasn't looking at the stars in the sky, he was looking at Taehyung, the glistening stars in his eyes.
Jungkook fluttered his eyes to stop glaring too much. "So, how come you were here today?"
"Do you remember I told you about my uncle's strawberry greenhouses?"
"Yeah."
"I deliver strawberries all across the village every once a week or so and your house just happens to be one of our customers."
"I see." Jungkook nodded. "My mother actually never mentioned anything about this. How long have you been delivering strawberries here?"
"About six months."
'Six months.' Jungkook repeated that in his head. 'And somehow I never saw him.'
The scene fell silent again, with only Yeontan's pants that could be heard.
"I'm sorry for what you had to hear today, during dinner." Jungkook said all of a sudden.
Taehyung picked up his plate and poked at the last piece of cake. "About the son-in-law topic?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry you had to hear something like that. I mean, you must find it weird-"
"I don't." he ate the chocolate cake. "I get that. You prefer guys, what's weird about that?"
Jungkook's breath got heavy. His ears started to feel hot. "Bisexual.... actually."
"Oh!" he exclaimed, disturbing Yeontan as Taehyung shifted to look at Jungkook with a curious smile. "So, that means you feel attracted to both guys and girls, right?"
"Something like that." Jungkook sighed in relief in his head. He had never expected to tell Taehyung any of this, much less have him be so interested about it.
"I see." he said, making his voice a bit deeper and resting his back on the pillar behind him. He looked at Jungkook. "So, is there someone in your life at the moment?"
"N-no." as he said that, Jungkook noticed a small smear of chocolate next to Taehyung's lips. He had the great urge to lean forward and wipe it off himself, but decided to tell him instead.
"Taehyun-" but before he could say something, Yeontan jumped onto him and licked Taehyung's face.
"Tan-ah!" he laughed. "Stop!" but the dog was just curious by the scent of the chocolate and licked it clean off. "Don't lick my lips!"
Yeontan got off of him and sniffed at Taehyung's empty plate, hoping he could get some more.
"Yeontan, you can't have chocolate!" Taehyung said to him, but the dog headed to Jungkook's plate with the untouched cake. He wagged his fluffy tail and looked up at Jungkook, as though asking politely if he could gobble up some of his cake.
Jungkook gave him a smile and picked him up to his face. "Taehyung just told you, you can't have chocolate!" he touched his nose to the small dog's. Yeontan on the other hand, had other ideas, and leaned in to lick Jungkook's face, his entire face.
Taehyung laughed. "Yeontan seems to have taken a liking to you! He's usually never this comfortable with people he's just met!"
Jungkook set Yeontan down awkwardly. He turned his head away all of a sudden and stared at the ground, chewing at the inners of his lips, hiding his awkward smile, as he felt his cheeks burn.
It may have been a really weird encounter, but at that moment, he was overly flustered and couldn't think straight. He had just one thought looming in his head.
'Did Taehyung and I just have an indirect kiss?'
He knew how weird it sounded, but his mind wasn't exactly helping him not to think about it.
The two ended up talking quite a lot about Taehyung's home up towards the hill, a bit about how he came over to Jungkook's for strawberry deliveries and helped with the garden and sometimes even played with the sheep.
Their conversations opened up while gazing at the constellation of stars in the dark night sky, wrapped in individual blankets as the winds got colder, Jungkook couldn't help but steal glances at Taehyung, still thinking about how a black and tan Pomeranian was behind how he and Taehyung had an indirect kiss.
