When Modern Meets Traditional
"Attention all passengers of Ezonia 1," said a woman over the PA, "We will be landing in Cherrygrove City in half an hour. Please return your seats to their upright positions. We will be landing shortly."
I breathed out a sigh as I stared out the window. I was able to see houses, islands, and a large span of water beneath us. Libby chirped a cry as she sat on my lap, only to paw at the plane's window. I chuckled and placed a hand on her fuzzy head.
"In just a few minutes, we'll be in Johto," I said, "Can you believe it, Libby?"
Libby let out a cry as she bounced on my lap.
I turned my head to see my friends conversing.
"So, what's the first thing you guys wanna do once we arrive in Johto?" Nina asked.
"Maybe find a place to eat?" Eric suggested, "I'm getting a bit hungry."
"Not a fan of plane food?" Kat asked with a chuckle.
Eric sighed and shook his head. I chuckled as I looked over at Rina, clutching her Snubbull close to her chest.
"Are you okay, Rina?" I asked.
Rina whipped her head around to look at me, and she nodded.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she said, "Just daydreaming."
"About how your designs will be on Yelena's stage?" Elsu asked.
Rina's face broke into a grin, and she laughed.
"Yeah! Something like that," Rina said, "I can't wait to see all of Johto's traditional clothes!"
"I can't wait to see the many different Pokémon!" Kat said.
"I can't wait to try the food!" Eric chimed in.
The others and I looked at our friend with quizzical looks.
"Sorry," he said, "That was my stomach talking."
The others and I couldn't help but laugh. I smiled before looking out the window, the ground gradually growing closer.
Soon, we'll be landing in Johto, and our journey throughout the traditional-style region will begin! I wonder if there will be any Dragon-type Pokémon here or Dragon-type trainers! Both sound pretty cool to me.
After some time, the plane touched down on the runway, the tires scraping roughly across the pavement.
"Attention, ladies and gentlemen," said the woman's voice, "We have arrived at Cherrygrove City!"
A round of applause soon erupted across the plane.
"Please gather your belongings and Pokémon, and move a safe distance away from the plane," the woman said, "Thank you for flying with us at Ezonia 1. We hope that you fly with us again soon!"
Then, everyone started gathering their things, and Pokémon, indistinctive chattering, followed shortly after. My friends and I grabbed our bags and followed the crowd off the plane. When we were all together, the six of us walked out of the terminal.
Cherrygrove City Airport is huge, just not as big as Gladiolus City Airport; I don't think.
"So, how do we get out of here?" Kat asked, looking around.
I hummed in thought before walking up to a nearby flight attendant.
"Excuse me, do you know where the exit is?" I asked.
"Straight ahead, go down the escalator, and the doors will be right in front of you." she said.
"Thank you!"
I walked back to my friends and gestured for them to follow me. We rode the escalator down, and the bright afternoon sun painted our faces with a warm glow. At the bottom of the escalator, a man dressed in a fine suit holding a sign that read "Rina and friends."
"Guess that's for us." Elsu said.
When we reached the bottom, the man in the suit smiled at us and bowed.
"You must be Rina, yes?" the man asked.
"I am!" Rina said.
"And you five must be Elsu, Nina, Eric, Kat, and Eragona, Rina's models?"
"We sure are!" Nina said, slinging her arm around Rina's neck.
The man smiled and nodded firmly.
"Wonderful! The name's Quentin," he said, "Miss Yelena asked me to come to pick you up. Please, follow me."
The six of us followed Quentin out of the airport, and a white limo was waiting for us.
"We're riding in a limo?" Kat asked.
"Of course," Quentin said, opening the door, "Hop in."
The six of us smiled at one another before climbing into the back of the limo. The seats were black leather, contrasting well with the white vehicle. Quentin got in the driver's seat and started the engine.
"So, where are we going, Quentin?" Eric asked.
"To Yelena's villa, of course." Quentin said with a grin.
A villa...?
The limo pulled away from the airport and drove down the lengthy street. My attention turned to the scenery flying by outside the window. A vast ocean and cityscapes, far as the eye could see.
So this is the Johto region, huh? I can't wait to explore it!
"Are you seeing this, Libby?" I asked, lifting her to the window.
Libby let out a cry as her brown eyes widened.
"What do you think we'll do once we arrive at Yelena's villa?" Nina asked.
"Hopefully, a banquet or buffet is waiting for us," Eric said, "My stomach has been growling forever..."
I chuckled before reaching into my bag and pulling out a red berry.
"Will this suffice for now?" I asked.
Eric smiled and gladly took the berry from my hand.
"Thanks, Era." he said, biting into the berry.
I smiled as I turned my attention back outside the window. I soon noticed we were driving along an inclined dirt path. Looking through the windshield, I saw a large white house sticking out of the cliffside.
"Is that it?" I asked.
"It is," Quentin said, "We have arrived."
When we came around the bend, the villa became much clearer. It was a modern-styled villa, and it was built directly into the cliffside.
It's beautiful!
The limo pulled up to the villa, soon coming to a stop. Quentin stepped out of the limo and walked around to open the door for us.
"Welcome to Yelena's villa, kids." Quentin said.
The others and I filed out of the limo and marveled at the large house.
"It's amazing!" Nina said, pulling out her phone and taking pictures.
Eric followed suit by taking out his camera and snapping a few pictures of the astounding property. I took out my phone and called Grandma Eli.
"Eragona, hello!" she said, "Did you make it to Johto?"
"Yes, Grandma Eli," I said, "Look where we are!"
I turned my phone around so my grandmother could see the villa.
"Is that Yelena's villa?" she asked.
"It is," I said, turning my phone around, "How did you know?"
"The others and I have visited a few times. Ezra often invited us over if his mother was hosting a fashion exhibition."
"You're a fan of hers?" Nina asked.
"I wouldn't consider myself a fan, but I admire her work nonetheless."
I nodded as we walked up to the villa's porch. When at the doorstep, Quentin opened the door, and the scent of lavender came flowing out.
The inside is just as pretty as the outside!
The interior was pale blue and white with silver and purple accents. There was a grand staircase in the middle of the foyer with cream-colored steps and golden rails.
"Wow! This place is amazing!" Kat said excitedly.
"Thank you, my dear." said a calm voice.
I looked at the top of the staircase, and a woman with light skin, dark blue eyes, and light brown hair with purple streaks was there. She wore a teal, gold, and dark gray kimono with black flowers on the skirt. Over the kimono, she wore a blue crop sweater and a teal scarf around her neck. She also wore silver tights and black shoes.
Is that Yelena? She's beautiful!
The woman walked down the stairs and smiled when she walked up to us.
"Welcome, kids," she said, "I am Yelena. I am very excited to have you here."
"It's an honor to meet you, Ms. Yelena," Nina said, "If I must say, your outfits, especially the one you're wearing, are incredible!"
Yelena chuckled with a fond smile.
"Thank you, dear," she said, "I had recently finished this outfit yesterday,"
"How long did it take to make it?" Eric asked.
"My record is four days, but this only took five."
Our eyes became saucers.
Four to five days!? That's insane!
"That's remarkable!" Rina chimed in.
Yelena glanced at Rina and smiled.
"Ah, so you're the young designer my son would go on and on about," Yelena said, extending her hand, "A pleasure to meet you in person, Rina."
Rina smiled sheepishly and grasped the fashionista's hand.
"The pleasure is mine," Rina said, "I've always wanted to meet you."
Yelena chuckled and released my friends.
"Please, follow me, children." Yelena said, walking towards the stairs.
The six of us nodded as we followed Yelena up the stairs.
"I've had rooms prepared for you all before you arrived," Yelena said, "Girls in one room, boys in another."
We turned down a corner, and there were two well-furnished bedrooms.
"The girls will be on the left and the boys on the right," Yelena said, "Meet me in my design studio to talk."
Yelena walked away with a wave and a grin. The other girls and I walked into our room and looked around. There were two bunk beds, all covered in white sheets. There was a balcony that overlooked the cityscapes and the ocean behind it. Against the wall was a small, round wooden table with four chairs.
Wow! The view is breathtaking!
"This is amazing!" Nina cried.
"It really is!" Kat said, placing down her bag, "So, this is where we'll be staying during our time in Johto, huh?"
"Guess so," I said, "I mean, that is if Yelena says it's okay."
"I'm sure of it," Rina said, "Come on; best not keep Yelena waiting."
After setting our bags down, we walked out of the room and met with the boys at the foot of the staircase.
"Quentin said that Yelena's design studio is this way," Eric said, "Follow us!"
The others and I nodded and reluctantly followed our friends.
I can't wait to see Yelena's design studio!
We soon stopped at white double doors with an archway. Carved into the archway were two Milotic.
If I remember correctly, Milotic is the world's most beautiful Pokémon.
I breathed out a sigh and knocked on the door. The doors soon swung open, and the sight before us left us astonished. Large rolls of different fabrics hung from the walls. Baskets or beads and pearls hung beside the material. Multicolored threads were all color-coded on a table under a window. Cream-colored mannequins stood in one corner, and two black chairs in another. In the center of the room was a large white marble counter with sewing machines, needles, thread, and fabric.
Whoa! This place is incredible!
Yelena was sitting at the end of the counter, working diligently on an outfit. The fashionista looked up and smiled.
"Welcome to my design studio, kids," she said, "What do you think?"
"It's amazing!" Rina swooned.
Yelena chuckled and moved away from her work.
"How long do you spend your time in here?" Elsu asked.
"Most of the time, really," Yelena answered, "But I never spend it alone."
When she said that, a green and yellow Pokémon walked in. I pulled out my Pokédex and scanned the lengthy Pokémon.
"Leavanny, the Nurturing Pokémon. Upon finding a small Pokémon, it weaves clothing for it from leaves, using the cutters on its arms and sticky silk."
This Pokémon makes clothes for other Pokémon? That is so cute!
"Leavanny here helps me with certain pieces of clothing or when I'm overwhelmed when I have a lot of clothes to make," Yelena said, "She's always been at my side when helping make clothes, isn't that right?"
Leavanny smiled and let out a cry, agreeing with its trainer. Libby, Angel, and Snubbull all let out friendly cries, to which Leavanny returned.
"If I'm correct, Leavanny is from the Unova region, right, Eric?" Nina asked.
"Sure is," Eric said, "In Unova, a gym leader uses a Leavanny in battle. He's a nice guy once you get to know him."
"Are you talking about Burgh of Castelia City Gym?"
Eric looked at Yelena with a surprised look on his face.
"You know him?" Eric asked.
"But of course," Yelena said, "He was the one who gave me this Leavanny when she was a Sewaddle."
Talk about having connections.
"Now, onto more pressing matters," Yelena said as she clapped her hands, "As you all know, my fashion expo is next week, and I will be showcasing Rina's work. During your time here, I will allow you all to use my design studio to help Rina. Everything around you is at your disposal."
Our eyes widened in surprise.
"Are you serious?" Rina asked, "Thank you so much!"
"No need. I cannot wait to see what you all come up with. Leavanny will be here to assist you with whatever you need."
Leavanny let out and cry as it merrily waved its cutters.
"Thank you, Yelena, truly," I said, "We'll make you proud!"
Yelena smiled and nodded.
"Don't forget, you guys are free to explore the entire region, too," Yelena said, "Don't let the stress of my fashion expo hold you back from adventuring. I'm sure you're all waiting to explore the region and its Pokémon."
"We won't forget." Kat said.
Yelena smiled.
"Until you've had your fill on Johto, my home is yours," she said, "Come back anytime when you need refuge."
At least she's letting us stay.
"Thanks again, Yelena!" Nina said excitedly.
With a final wave, Yelena left her design studio. The others and I glanced at one another and grinned.
"So, should we get started on these outfits?" Elsu asked.
"That sounds like a great idea!" Rina said.
Nodding to each other, we started helping Rina work on our clothes for the fashion expo.
This isn't my ideal idea of spending my time in Johto, but this is about Rina. As long as she's happy, then I'm delighted. I can't wait to journey around Johto! What does this traditional region have in store for foreigners like us?
