The Tendency to Battle [Part 2]

"Ladies and gentlemen! The moment you've all been waiting for! It's time to begin the Battle Tendency Tournament finals!" Claude announced happily.

The stadium burst into cheer.

Great news! Kat and I advanced to the finals! In the second round, Jet and I faced up against a Magmar; Kat and Goodra were up against a Venusaur. In the semi-finals, Libby and I battled a Hypno; Kat and Beautifly battled a Cacturne. And now, Kat and I are here, ready to battle it out in the finals! I hope we get paired together...

Kat and I were waiting with the other two finalists, Paula and Keith, to hear the double-battle match-ups.

"Now, please turn your attention to the screen as we match the two teams for the double battle!" Claude said.

I looked up anxiously as the screen switched between the pictures. When they stopped, a wide grin spread across my face.

"It's Kat and Eragona VS. Paula and Keith!" Claude announced, "Contestants, please make your way to the battlefield!"

Kat and I stood up and faced our opponents.

"Good luck to you both." I said with a kind smile.

"Right back at ya, kid." Keith said, returning the gesture.

Nodding to one another, we went our separate ways to the battlefield.

"Are you ready?" I asked, turning to Kat.

"Yeah! We'll win this for sure!" she said.

Kat and I had left Angel and Libby back in the lounge because we would be using our other Pokémon for this battle.

Once we were out on the field, the crowd broke into cheers and applause. Kat and I stood beside one another as we faced our opponents opposite of us.

"Welcome, challengers! Now that you're here let's get this show on the road!" Claude announced, "Begin!"

The four of us grinned at one another and tossed up our Pokéballs.

"Jet, come on out!" I cried.

"Show yourself, my beautiful Beautifly!" Kat cried.

"Tyranitar, let's go!" Keith cried.

"Weavile, show your crimson glare!" Paula cried.

All at once, our Pokémon showed themselves. My heart sank.

If my memory serves me right, Tyranitar is a Rock/Dark-type, and Weavile is an Ice/Dark-type. We're all at a disadvantage and an advantage, the way I see it. Bug-types like Beautifly are super-effective against Dark-types, and Ground-types like Jet are super-effective against Rock-types. However, Rock-types are super-effective against Beautifly, and Ice-types are super-effective against Jet. This battle certainly can go two ways...

"Alright, Beautifly! Let's kick things off with Bug Buzz!" Kat said.

Beautifly let out a cry before vibrating its wings, generating a damaging sound wave.

"Dodge!" Keith and Paula cried in unison.

The Tyranitar and Weavile quickly moved out of the way before the super-effective attack could hit them.

"Icy Wind, Weavile!" Paula cried.

The Weavile grinned and gaped its mouth, only to release a chilling wind.

"Fly up, Beautifly!" Kat cried.

"Dig, Jet!" I cried.

Before the attack could hit them, our Pokémon managed to dodge.

Now's my chance to deal with that Tyranitar...

"Do it, Jet!" I cried.

Jet soon came up from the ground and critically hit the Tyranitar.

"Bite!" Keith cried.

His Tyranitar opened its mouth and bit down on Jet. Jet then let out frantic cries.

"Beautifly, help out using Bug Buzz!" Kat cried.

Her Beautifly quickly flew over and generated another damaging sound wave. The Tyranitar roared, releasing Jet from its jaws.

"Metal Claw!" I cried.

Jet's tiny claws soon began to glow. Leaping up, Jet brought down his claw on the Tyranitar's head, causing the much larger Pokémon to stumble back.

"Weavile, freeze that Gible with Ice Beam!" Paula cried.

Weavile opened its mouth and released an icy-cold beam of energy.

"Dodge using Dig!" I cried.

Jet quickly dug into the ground, almost getting hit by the Ice-type attack.

"Not this time! Tyranitar, Earthquake!" Keith cried.

No! Earthquake does more damage if the opponent uses Dig!

The Tyranitar roared and slammed its tail on the ground, shattering the ground like glass. I watched in horror as Jet was propelled into the air.

"Icy Wind!" Paula cried.

The Weavile let out a cry and aimed its attack upward.

"Gust!" Kat said.

Beautifly flew in front of Jet and flapped its wings violently, dispersing the chilling air. Beautifly then grabbed Jet and brought him back to the ground.

"Thanks, Kat." I said.

"Anytime." she said with a smile.

I glared back at the two Pokémon and their trainers and growled.

"Energy Ball at the Tyranitar!" Kat cried.

Beautifly let out a cry and started forming a glowing green ball. When it was charged, Beautifly fired it at the Tyranitar.

"Destroy it with Metal Claw, Weavile!" Paula cried.

The Weavile jumped before the Energy Ball and slashed it to pieces.

"Jet, use Dragon Breath!" I ordered.

Jet let out a small cry, releasing an incredible blast of breath with it. The Weavile didn't have time to react and got hit with the Dragon Breath.

"Oh, no, you don't! Tyranitar, Stone Edge!" Keith cried.

Why does every single Pokémon I battle know Earthquake and Stone Edge!?

The Tyranitar roared and slammed its fist into the ground, causing sharpened stones to ascend. Beautifly flew in too close and got hit with one of the stones.

"Beautifly, no!" Kat cried.

"Quick, Jet! Destroy the stones with Metal Claw!" I ordered.

Jet sprinted up to the stones and slashed them away with his Steel-type move. He was then taken back to see Weavile hiding behind one of the stones he destroyed.

"Now, Ice Beam!" Paula cried.

Weavile opened its mouth and let out another icy-cold energy beam, causing Jet to get blown back into a stone sprouting from the ground.

"Jet!" I cried.

"This battle is certainly heating up, folks! Both Eragona and Kat's Pokémon have taken quite the beating! Can they take anymore?" Claude wondered aloud.

Darn it! I can't throw in the towel just yet! Come on, Jet, please... Get up...

As if Jet heard my thoughts, he staggered on his small legs. That's when Jet started glowing and growing bigger.

What the...?

The little Gible I once knew was no longer there when the light died down. The new Pokémon let out a roar-like cry. I took out my Pokédex and scanned my new Pokémon before.

"Gabite, the Cave Pokémon, and the evolved form of Gible. It sheds its skin and gradually grows larger. Its scales can be ground into a powder and used as raw materials for traditional medicine. Jewels are buried in the caves these Pokémon nest in, but you'll be torn apart by claws and fangs the moment you enter one of these caves."

Jet... evolved...? I can't believe it!

"I don't believe it, folks! Eragona's Gible just evolved into Gabite!" Claude announced, "Could this turn the tides for Eragona and Kat?"

Jet soon sprinted up to the Tyranitar at incredible speed. Its claws soon grew larger and started glowing green. My Gabite leaped up and brought down its claws on the Tyranitar's head, causing it to fall backward.

"Jet just used Dragon Claw!" Kat said.

Dragon Claw, huh? This will definitely help us in the long run...

"Beautifly, are you able to go on?" Kat asked.

The Butterfly Pokémon uttered a strained cry but soon propelled itself into the air.

"Alright then, use Twister!" Kat cried.

The Beautifly started beating its wings violently, whipping up a tornado. The tornado's force was so strong it caught both the Tyranitar and Weavile inside.

"Now, aim and use Dragon Rage on the Tyranitar!" I cried.

Jet growled and aimed his attack at the large Pokémon. When he made a direct hit, the Tyranitar let out a strained roar as it got blown back.

"Now, Beautifly, Bug Buzz!" Kat ordered.

The Butterfly Pokémon vibrated its wings, generating another damaging sound wave toward the Weavile. Luckily, it made direct contact. Both Pokémon staggered to their feet and let out tired sighs.

"Icy Wind!" Paula cried.

"Dark Pulse!" Keith ordered.

The Pokémon reluctantly obeyed their trainers and fired off their attacks.

"Dodge!" Kat and I cried.

Beautifly and Jet swiftly moved out of the way before the attacks could hit them.

"Your opponents are tired, Jet! Finish them off with Dragon Rage!" I cried.

"Use Bug Buzz once more!" Kat cried.

Our Pokémon got together and fired off their attacks at the same time. Because the Tyranitar and Weavile were already weakened, our Pokémon's attacks landed a critical hit. When the dust cleared, both Tyranitar and Weavile were out cold.

"And the Battle Tendency Tournament winners are Kat and Eragona!" Claude announced.

The stadium erupted into cheer and applause. I looked at my friend with a bright smile, and she kindly returned the gesture. Beautifly and Jet eventually came over with happy smiles on their faces.

"You did it, guys!" I said.

"We're so proud of you!" Kat said.

Beautifly and Jet both let out happy cries. Before returning to the lounge, Kat and I walked over to Paula and Keith.

"Thanks for the battle, you two," Kat said, "You were really strong."

"Thanks, kid. You two were pretty strong yourselves." Keith said.

"Congratulations on the win and your Pokémon evolving!" Paula said, "You deserved it!"

"Thanks, Paula." I said.

I held out my hand to Paula, and she gladly took it; Kat did the same with Keith. Going our separate ways, Kat and I returned to the lounge, only to be tackled by Libby and Angel.

"Take it easy, you two!" I laughed.

Libby and Angel jumped up and down with joy and excitement. That's when Kat's Goodra hopped out of its Pokéball with a friendly cry.

"We couldn't have done it without you guys. Thank you, all of you!" I said happily.

All our Pokémon let out happy cries. I looked down at Jet and crouched in front of him.

"And you, Jet. We're going to be training more now that you evolved." I said, placing a hand on his hard head.

Jet let out a cry and leaned into my touch. Libby leaped up on Jet's head and let out a happy cry, my Gabite returning the gesture.

My first Dragon-type Pokémon has finally evolved, and I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to see what other secrets are. Jet has in store. I'll have to wait and see.
