The Dragonet Den
"Use Swift!" I cried!
Libby flipped in the air, and star-shaped rays made their way toward Kat's Goodra.
"Dodge and use Dragon Pulse!" Kat cried.
Kat's Goodra moved out of Libby's attack and fired its multi-colored shock wave at Libby.
"Dodge and use Hidden Power!" I ordered.
Libby growled and fired multiple orbs at her opponent. Goodra crossed its arms and took the attack.
"I think that's enough training for today," Kat announced, "We'll practice more later."
"Alright." I said.
Kat returned her Goodra to its Pokéball and walked up to me with Angel at her side.
"You and Libby are certainly getting stronger," Kat complimented, "At this rate, you'll be strong enough to face any Dragon-type Pokémon that comes your way."
"I sure hope so," I admitted, "Can't become a Dragon-type trainer without Dragon-type Pokémon."
Kat chuckled and nodded in agreement. The two of us looked down at Libby and Angel, who were running around us with happy smiles. We smiled and turned back to one another.
"So, what Dragon-type Pokémon are you hoping to find?" Kat asked.
I hummed in thought and paced around the clearing.
I never really gave it much thought, to be honest...
"Hmm... What do you recommend?" I asked.
"Me?" Kat questioned, "Well, I'm not that fluent with Dragon-type Pokémon, but I do know some Pokémon that evolve into Dragon-type Pokémon."
I nodded and listened instinctively.
"Swablu evolves into Altaria, a Dragon/Flying-type."
"That I knew," I said, "That's my grandmother's strongest Pokémon."
Kat nodded and hummed in thought.
"There's also Trapinch. It evolves into Vibrava, a Dragon/Ground-type. Then it evolves into Flygon, also a Dragon/Ground-type," Kat explained, "Horsea evolves into Seadra, and then Seadra evolves into Kingdra, a Water/Dragon-type Pokémon."
"Personally, if a Pokémon evolves into a Dragon-type, Mega Evolves into a Dragon-type, or is just a pure Dragon-type, I'm happy." I said.
Kat nodded with a genuine smile.
"Well, the way I see it, I can see you with an arsenal of Dragon-type Pokémon," Kat said, "Being that your grandmother raised you, I'm pretty sure you grew up around her Dragon-type Pokémon."
"Sure did," I said, "Their power and majesty just... captivated me and made me want to pursue to become a Dragon-type trainer."
Kat nodded as she listened to me.
Kat is such a good listener. I feel like I can tell her just about anything, and she can relate to me.
"Well, the best way to start is to find a baby Dragon-type Pokémon or a Pokémon that evolves into a Dragon-type," Kat suggested, "My Goodra was a defenseless, little Goomy. Now, look at him."
"I was thinking the same," I said, "But besides my grandmother's Pokémon, your Goodra is the only Dragon-type Pokémon I've seen. I don't know where to start looking."
Kat paced back and forth, humming in thought.
"I know!" Kat suddenly said, "Why don't we ask your grandmother for some advice? I'm sure she'd be more than happy to help. Plus, I'm certain she must know the best spot to find Dragon-types."
She did say if there was anything I needed to call her...
"Good thinking, Kat." I said.
I picked up my bag and pulled out my phone. Dialing my grandmother, she picked up almost immediately, and her face became visible on my screen.
"Hi, Grandma Eli!" I said.
"Oh, hello there, Eragona!" she said, "How's your journey coming along?"
I nodded with a kind smile.
"Great, so far," I said, "I've already made a great friend. Meet Kat."
Kat walked up next to me and waved at my grandmother.
"Hi, Ms. Elise!" she said, "It's such an honor to meet you!"
"Oh, the honor is mine, my dear." Grandma Eli said.
Libby hopped on my shoulder and let out an adorable cry, her tail wagging with glee.
"Hello, little Libby," Grandma Eli said, "How are you?"
Libby chirped her cry as if she were saying she was doing fine.
"That's wonderful to hear," Grandma Eli said, "Now, what can I help you with?"
"I wanna start catching Dragon-type Pokémon. Problem is, I don't know where to look," I said, "Got any suggestions?"
Grandma Eli hummed before turning back to face Kat and me.
"Yes. To the Northeast, there is a mountain with a cave called the Dragonet Den." Grandma Eli said.
"The Dragonet Den?" Kat parroted.
"Isn't dragonet the term for a baby dragon?" I asked.
Grandma Eli nodded with a stern look on her face.
"Yes. In that den, there are baby Dragon-type Pokémon, Pokémon that evolve into Dragon-types, and eggs," Grandma Eli explained, "That is how I got my Altaria."
When she said that, my grandmother's Altaria appeared next to her with a happy cry.
"Perfect! That'll help me out a ton." I said.
"But beware..." Grandma Eli said in a low voice.
My joyful expression was soon masked with a look of concern and uncertainty.
"In the Dragonet Den, you must prove yourself to the King of Dragons, Tyrantrum," Grandma Eli explained, "A Dragon-type Pokémon native to the Kalos region. Millions of years ago, it was viewed as a king, hence the name many gave it. If you can prove your strength to Tyrantrum, he will bestow a Dragon-type Pokémon that matches your strength and heart."
A Dragon-type Pokémon that matches my strength and heart...?
"Thanks, Grandma Eli," I said, "I'll call you back with my new Dragon-type Pokémon."
"I look forward to seeing what Dragon-type you get," Grandma Eli said, "Good luck!"
Thanking my grandmother, I ended the call and put my phone back in my bag.
"Alright, let's start heading to the Dragonet Den." I said.
"Are you sure you're ready, Era? I've heard Tyrantrum has jaws strong enough to crush a car like a piece of paper," Kat said, "I only know one person in the Kalos region who uses that Pokémon, and it's really strong."
Thanks for the motivational pep talk...
I looked at my friend and grinned.
"Libby and I can take on this King of Dragons, right, Libbs?" I asked, looking down at my partner.
Libby let out a confident cry. Kat sighed and shook her head fondly.
"Okay, okay," Kat said, "Let's get you a Dragon-type!"
I nodded with a smile. Libby pumped a paw in the air and let out a glee-filled cry. Angel chirped her cry with a happy smile on her face.
"Angel and Libby are ready." Kat commented.
Smiling at one another, the two of us started making our way to the Dragonet Den.
"Dragon-types are extremely weak to Fairy-types," Kat said, "Do you want to use Angel to beat Tyrantrum?"
"Thanks, but no," I said, "Libby and I have to prove our strength on our own."
Kat sighed and looked at me with a concerned look.
"Just... be careful, okay?" she asked, "I don't even want to begin to imagine what Tyrantrum's jaws can do to another Pokémon."
The thought of that sent a chill down my spine.
That would be bad...
The two of us continued to walk and talk to the mountain Grandma Eli told us about. Once we arrived, Kat and I tilted our heads back to stare at the high mountain.
"In times like these, I would love to have a Flying-type Pokémon." I said.
"I have one, but it's a Beautifly," Kat said, "It wouldn't be able to carry us all."
I breathed a heavy sigh and stared at the mountain in front of us.
"Well, we're not gonna get anywhere by gawking," I said, "Let's get a move on."
Kat nodded, and the two of us started scaling the mountain.
I'm just glad we're not scaling Mount Haven. Now that would've been a problem...
"So, what does this den even look like?" Kat asked.
"My grandmother only said that there's a cave around here," I replied, "Shouldn't be that hard to spot, I assume."
Once on a flat path, I looked over my shoulder to see the majestic view. Libby let out a sigh and let the wind ruffle her fur.
It's really peaceful up here...
"Eragona! I found the cave!" Kat cried, her voice bringing me back to reality.
I turned around to see Kat and Angel ahead of my partner and me. Walking towards my friend, I saw the cave my grandmother talked about was there.
"This has to be it," Kat said, "I can't see any other openings from here. This is the only one."
"Then this is definitely the Dragonet Den." I said.
I looked over at Libby and grinned.
"You ready, Libby?" I asked.
Libby let out a loud cry with a determined look on her face. Kat and I turned to each other and nodded. Breathing out, we stepped into the dark cave.
"I can't see a thing." Kat said.
"Neither can I." I answered.
Suddenly, the tunnel became illuminated with fire to the sides of us. Once we were able to see, I saw many little Pokémon. Some were running around, some were swimming in the small pool of water, and some were flying. I quickly took out my Pokédex and scanned them all.
"Charmander, the Lizard Pokémon. The flame that burns at the tip of its tail is an indication of its emotions. The flame wavers when Charmander is enjoying itself. If the Pokémon becomes enraged, the flame burns fiercely."
"Dratini, the Dragon Pokémon. This Pokémon was long considered to be no more than a myth. The small lump on a Dratini's forehead is actually a horn that's still coming in."
"Horsea, the Dragon Pokémon. If it senses any danger, it will vigorously spray water or a special type of ink from its mouth."
"Trapinch, the Ant Pit Pokémon. Trapinch's nest is a sloped, bowl-like pit dug in sand. This Pokémon patiently waits for prey to tumble down the pit. Its giant jaws have enough strength to crush even boulders."
"Swablu, the Cotton Bird Pokémon. Swablu has light and fluffy wings that are like cottony clouds. This Pokémon is not frightened of people. It lands on the heads of people and sits there like a cotton-fluff hat."
"Bagon, the Rock Head Pokémon. Bagon harbors a never-ending dream of one day soaring high among the clouds. As if trying to dispel its frustration over its inability to fly, this Pokémon slams its hard head against huge rocks and shatters them into pebbles."
"Gible, the Land Shark Pokémon. It nests in horizontal holes warmed by geothermal heat. Foes who get too close can expect to be pounced on and bitten."
"Axew, the Tusk Pokémon. They play with each other by knocking their large tusks together. Their tusks break sometimes, but they grow back so quickly that it isn't a concern."
"Deino, the Irate Pokémon. They cannot see, so they tackle and bite to learn about their surroundings. Their bodies are covered in wounds."
"Goomy, the Soft Tissue Pokémon. It uses its horns to check out its surroundings. They're very sensitive, so if you grab them, it will feel a strong shock and be unable to move."
"Noibat, the Sound Wave Pokémon. They live in pitch-black caves. Their enormous ears can emit ultrasonic waves of 200,000 hertz."
"Skrelp, the Mock Kelp Pokémon. Camouflaged as rotten kelp, they spray liquid poison on prey that approaches unawares and then finish it off."
"Tyrunt, the Royal Heir Pokémon. This Pokémon is selfish and likes to be pampered. It can also inflict grievous wounds on its Trainer just by playing around."
"Jangmo-o, the Scaly Pokémon. It expresses its feelings by smacking its scales. Metallic sounds echo through the tall mountains where Jangmo-o lives."
"Wow... There's so many here," I said, "I'm in dragon heaven..."
Kat chuckled and watched the little Pokémon play. That's when we heard a low growl. The little Pokémon stopped playing and went into hiding. Dust and pebbles soon started falling from the ceiling, and the ground started shaking.
"What's going on?" Kat asked.
"I don't know!" I said.
I quickly shielded Libby from the falling rocks and dust, and Kat did the same with Angel. When the rocks stopped falling, I looked up and was met with a pair of glowing white eyes. I stepped back to see that it was a giant Pokémon. Taking out my Pokédex, I scanned the colossal-sized Pokémon.
"Tyrantrum, the Despot Pokémon, and the evolved form of Tyrunt. The king of the ancient world, it can easily crunch a car with the devastating strength of its enormous jaws."
So, this is Tyrantrum, King of Dragons... This might be harder than I thought...
I breathed out a heavy sigh and straightened my posture.
"I've come to prove my strength to you, Tyrantrum!" I said, "My dream is to be a Dragon-type trainer, and it would be an honor to raise one of your own."
Tyrantrum nodded and stepped back. Libby growled and hopped off my shoulder.
"Stand back, Kat," I said, holding out my arm, "I don't want you or Angel getting hurt."
"Us? What about you and Libby?" Kat asked frantically.
I turned back to Kat and smiled.
"We'll be fine," I said, "Right, Libbs?"
Libby looked back and nodded with a firm cry. Kat sighed with a nod. I handed her my bag and watched as she and Angel stepped back. I turned my attention back to the Tyrantrum and glared at it.
"Alright, Libby! Quick Attack!" I cried.
Libby then ran up to the Tyrantrum with incredible speed. The Tyrantrum roared and slammed its foot into the ground. The ground started to shake violently.
It used Earthquake!
As the ground shook, Eevee tripped on a piece of the shaken-up floor.
"Get out of its range, Libby!" I cried.
As I said that, the Tyrantrum turned around and slammed its tail into the ground, causing rock spikes to ascend.
Stone Edge!? Really?! It just had to know Earthquake and Stone Edge!
Thankfully, Libby was able to move out of the way of the attack. Tyrantrum then opened its mouth and used Dragon Pulse.
"Shadow Ball!" I ordered.
Libby obeyed and hurled up a big, shadowy blob. Both attacks connected and caused an explosion. The explosion kicked up the dirt and dust, masking my vision.
This is exactly what happened when Libby battled Kat's Goodra.
"Libby, use Swift!" I cried.
Libby jumped up and flipped in the air, star-shaped rays shooting down into the dust cloud. I heard the Tyrantrum roar and watched it stumble back out of the dust cloud.
Yes, we hit it!
Libby landed with a confident cry.
"Go, Libby!" Kat cried, "Go, Era!"
Kat and Angel's cheering brought a smile to my face. The Tyrantrum shook off the pain and let out a loud roar, causing everything around us to shake. Tyrantrum turned around and slammed its tail into the ground, causing another round of rock spikes to pop us.
"Dodge!" I cried.
Libby leaped up and tried to dodge the Stone Edge, but one of the spikes propelled Libby into the air. The Tyrantrum didn't waste any time firing a Dragon Pulse at her. Unfortunately, it was a direct hit, and Libby came crashing down.
"Libby!" I cried.
I watched as my partner tried to pick herself up.
That Dragon Pulse was a lot stronger than Kat's Goodra's... What am I going to do...?
Looking at the natural battlefield in front of me, I noticed that the sharpened stones were still above ground.
That's it!
"Libby, can you stand?" I asked.
Libby growled and stood with pride.
"Good," I said, "Now, bounce off the sharpened stones using Quick Attack!"
Catching onto my plan, Libby did just that, bouncing off the stones like a pinball. Upon the last rock, she leaped into the air and was right over Tyrantrum's mouth. The Despot Pokémon opened its mouth and charged up its Dragon Pulse.
Gotcha!
"Now, use Shadow Ball!" I cried.
Libby gaped her mouth and released a shadowy blob. The Shadow Ball and Dragon Pulse caused an explosion in Tyrantrum's mouth, making the colossal-sized Pokémon stumble backward.
"Great, we stunned it!" I cried, "Don't let up! Use Hidden Power!"
Obeying my command, Libby quickly attacked with multiple glowing orbs, all landing critical hits on the Tyrantrum. The Tyrantrum stumbled back into a wall and fell with a deep groan. Libby landed in front of the large Pokémon and let out a low cry.
Did... Did we win...?
The Tyrantrum stood up and shook off the pain.
Darn it!
The Tyrantrum walked up to us and breathed out a growl. Libby stepped in front of me and let out a loud cry. Tyrantrum grumbled and nodded. Looking at the small Pokémon, he growled and called them over. I watched as the little Pokémon ran past me and stood in line in front of Tyrantrum. The large Pokémon looked up at me and gestured its head toward the small Pokémon.
"Are you saying I can choose one?" I asked in awe.
The Tyrantrum only nodded. I turned back to Kat and Angel, and they had the same expression as me.
I thought Tyrantrum just gave you one. This must be a first for him...
Breathing out, I looked down at the adorable Pokémon, their big eyes staring up at me.
I wish I could take them all, but I don't want to be selfish or greedy. Besides, I want to travel the world to find these Dragon-types.
Scanning the Pokémon, my eyes locked on the Gible. I smirked and crouched in front of the little Dragon-type Pokémon. I pulled out a Pokéball and held it toward the Gible.
"Gible, will you join me on my journey to become a Dragon-type trainer?" I asked.
Gible let out a happy cry and did a little dance. I chuckled and tapped the Pokéball on the small head, causing the ball to open and absorb the Gible. The ball shook in my hand before stopping. Then, a red light blinked. I smiled and stood up, smirking down at the Pokéball with satisfaction. I looked up at the Tyrantrum and bowed before it.
"Thank you, Tyrantrum," I said, "I promise to take good care of Gible."
Tyrantrum smiled and nodded. I looked down at the other Pokémon and grinned.
"Gible, come on out!" I said, aiming the Pokéball down at the ground.
The ball opened, and Gible appeared with a happy cry. The other little Pokémon let out happy cries and bounced around their friend. I smiled when I saw Libby and Angel join the fun.
Surprisingly, the little Pokémon was very calm around Angel, even though she's a Fairy-type.
Kat walked up to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"You're first Dragon-type Pokémon," she said, "How do you feel?"
"Accomplished," I answered, "I feel very accomplished."
Kat smiled and nodded. I looked back at the Tyrantrum and grinned, the large Pokémon mimicking my expression. Gible walked up to me and clutched my leg. I crouched and placed a hand on the hard head. Libby bounced up and rubbed her cheek against Gible's.
"Now, what should I call you...?" I wondered out loud.
Tilting my head in thought, I snapped my fingers when a name came to mind.
"I hereby name you... Jet." I said, "Do you wanna be called Jet?"
Gible smiled and let out a happy cry. His reaction made me laugh.
"Jet it is!" I said.
I stood up and returned Jet to his Pokéball.
"Thank you once again, Tyrantrum," I said, "If it is alright with you, I would like to come back to challenge you to a battle with the Gible you raised when he becomes stronger."
Tyrantrum smiled and released a mighty roar. Hearing that only made me smile. Libby hopped on my shoulder and waved down at the other little Pokémon. The Pokémon smiled and bounced up and down with happiness. Kat and I waved goodbye to the Dragon-type Pokémon and left the cave with smiles.
My first Dragon-type Pokémon is a Gible. We may not be the perfect team yet, but I know the two of us will go very far in life together. With Kat's help, I'll be a Dragon-type trainer soon enough...
