A Heated Quiz and Ancient Royalty
When Georgia reached into the bag, she pulled out the map and handed it to Eric. She then pulled out the small piece of paper and read it.
"Your first location is across the bay; pay attention to what is said. To earn your next clue to be on your way, find a man whose Gym Badge is red."
"Across the bay?" Eric parroted, opening the map.
When we looked at the map, I was in awe at how beautiful the Kanto region was.
I didn't know Kanto was so big.
"Well, we're right here in Pallet Town," Georgia said, pointing to the small town on the map, "The clue said 'across the bay,' and the only bay from Pallet Town is right here."
The cowgirl then pointed at a small stretch of water.
"If we're going across it," Nina began, gliding her finger down the map, "Then we'll end up here at this island here."
The redhead then pointed to a small island south of Pallet Town.
"That's Cinnabar Island." Georgia said.
"Then that's our heading," Caps said, "Come on!"
Nodding to the self-proclaimed Champion, we followed the cowgirl to the south of the town. As we approached the town's southern border, we saw a wide river leading into a bay.
"So, how are we gonna get over to Cinnabar Island?" Kat asked, "We don't have a boat."
"But we do have Pokémon," I said, pulling out a Pokéball, "Jet, come on out!"
At my command, my Garchomp appeared.
"Samurott, I choose you!" Eric said, throwing a Pokéball.
"Show yourself, Magnezone!" Caps said, tossing a Pokéball.
At their command, the Magnet Area and Formidable Pokémon appeared.
"We're heading to Cinnabar Island," I said, "Think you can get us across this bay?"
The three Pokémon let out bold cries as they nodded. I hopped on Jet's back and glanced at Georgia.
"Georgia, you can ride with me," I said, extending my hand, "Since you know the way there, you can guide us."
The cowgirl looked back at the others, and they nodded. Georgia smiled before taking my hand. I pulled her up and had her sit in front of me. Eric and Nina got on Samurott, and Caps and Kat got on Magnezone.
"Where to, Georgia?" Eric asked.
"Straight and simple," Georgia said, "If we keep heading south, we'll make it to Cinnabar Island in no time."
"You heard her, guys," I said, "Let's get going!"
The three Pokémon let out loud cries before speeding across the bay. Georgia held down her hat with a wide grin on her face.
"I ain't never been flyin' like this before!" Georgia exclaimed, "This is amazin'!"
"You can say that again," I said, "Riding on Jet is always a blast, right, Libby?"
My Eevee clutched onto my shoulder as she let out a cheer-filled cry.
"So, what exactly are we looking out for?" Caps asked from beside us, "When will we know we've arrived?"
Georgia turned forward and grinned.
"You should be seein' Cinnabar Island's famous volcano right about now." she said casually.
When I looked ahead, a towering mountain pierced the sky.
Whoa. I've never seen a volcano before. That's really cool!
"Cinnabar Island was a very prosperous place until the volcano erupted and wiped out the entire town below it," Georgia explained.
"Oh, dear..." Nina said.
"After a Pokémon Center was rebuilt on that island, people started relocating there again and rebuilt the entire town back to its former glory."
As we approached the island, I saw a bustling town with different-sized buildings.
Wow, to think all this wasn't here before—nothing but soot and ash.
When we arrived at the island, Magnezone and Jet landed on a small dock. As I climbed off my Garchomp, I patted his head and smiled.
"Thanks, buddy." I said.
Jet let out a low growl and leaned into my touch. After Eric, Caps, and I retracted our Pokémon, we turned to marvel at the once burned-down town.
"I still can't wrap my head around the fact that the volcano destroyed all of this." Nina said.
"Is the volcano, you know... dormant?" Kat asked.
"Oh, yeah," Georgia said, "The last time it erupted was when it wiped out this lil' town, which was years ago."
As the others walked into town, colorful banners lined the streets, connecting to various street stalls and lamp posts.
"What else is this place known for?" Caps asked.
I pulled out my phone before scrolling through the online brochure.
"Like Georgia had mentioned, it was wiped out by the volcano erupting a long time ago," I said, "This island also used to house a place called the Pokémon Mansion. It used to belong to a famous researcher there, but after the recent eruption, the mansion was lost forever,"
"That's so sad." Kat said.
"It says here that it was already in bad shape, and the locals planned on tearing it down but didn't have the heart to. So, instead of tearing it down, they built a research lab known as the Cinnabar Pokémon Lab. It says here that it is known to experiment and revive fossils."
Wait. Revive fossils?
"Era, you can revive your Jaw Fossil and get your Tyrunt here!" Kat exclaimed.
"Yeah, you're right!" I said, "We should head over there when we get the chance."
"That sounds like a plan." Georgia said.
The others agreed with nods and smiles.
To think I'll be able to have a fossil Pokémon on my team! I can't wait!
"Now that we've crossed the bay, what's the next hint in the clue?" Eric asked.
Georgia pulled out the paper and reread the clue.
"Your first location is across the bay; pay attention to what is said," Georgia red, "To earn your next clue to be on your way, find a man whose Gym Badge is red."
"A man whose Gym Badge is red?" Nina parroted.
"Well, that's rather self-explanatory," Caps said casually, "We just need to find the Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island and get his badge."
"Yup," Georgia said, "The Gym Leader here is named Blaine. He's a very intelligent man and a master at Fire-type Pokémon."
"Alright then, lead the way, Georgia." Eric said.
Georgia nodded before sprinting ahead with us in tow. As we weaved through the crowded streets, we soon stood in front of the foot of the volcano with the entrance to a building engraved into it.
"You're kidding, right?" Kat asked.
"Nope," Georgia said, "This is where the gym once was, and this is where it was rebuilt."
Who designed that anyway?
"Trust me, though," Georgia said, "The inside looks awesome!"
When the cowgirl pushed open the doors, my eyes widened. Inside was a reddish-orange battlefield with a moat of lava surrounding it. When I looked up, I saw the clear blue sky.
"Whoa! You weren't kidding, Georgia!" I exclaimed, "This place looks awesome!"
"Thank you kindly." said a stray voice.
When I looked ahead, a middle-aged man was walking up to us. The man was bald with fair skin and a silver mustache. He wore black glasses with a dark navy shirt, brown pants, a tie that resembled a fire, and a white lab coat.
"Welcome to the Cinnabar Gym! The name's Blaine," he said, "I take you kids are here for the Gym Badge for the scavenger hunt, hm?"
"That's right." Eric said.
The man hummed in thought before stepping onto the battlefield.
"Sorry, but you'll have to earn my gym badge." Blaine said.
Does he want us to battle him for the badge?
When Blaine clapped his hands, the battlefield started to quake. Then, the battlefield pulled apart, and a small stage started to ascend.
What in the world is going on?
When the stage was above ground, it was covered in reds, oranges, and yellows.
"If you want my badge, you're gonna have to answer my questions!" Blaine said, "They don't call me the Hotheaded Quiz Master for nothing!"
A quiz game? I was not expecting this, but this should be fun!
Blaine stepped on the stage and grinned down at us.
"There will be six questions. Answer them all correctly, and you get the badge to continue on with the scavenger hunt, and I will give you the next clue for your next location," Blaine explained, "Since there are six of y'all, you can each answer a question."
When Blaine clapped his hands again, a monitor came up from the stage beside him.
"Are you kids ready?" Blaine asked.
"Ready as we'll ever be!" Eric said.
"Bring on the heat, Blaine!" Nina exclaimed.
Blaine smiled before turning to the monitor. When the monitor turned on, a silhouette of a large Pokémon appeared.
"Who is that Pokémon?" Blaine asked.
As I studied the Pokémon, I recognized the fluffy tail and mane.
"That's Arcanine!" I called out.
A ding sound went off when the monitor revealed the Legendary Pokémon.
"Correct!" Blaine said.
"Quick thinking, Era!" Nina said.
"1 down, 5 more to go." Kat said.
"Next question!"
The monitor soon switched to a picture of a Chandelure.
If I remember correctly, Klaus has a Chandelure to help him around Grandma Eli's manor.
"This Pokémon is called Chandelure, a Fire/Ghost-type Pokémon," Blaine said, "Where is this Pokémon native to?"
Eric scoffed as he rolled his eyes.
"That's easy," he said, "Chandelure is native to Unova, my home region."
Another ding sound echoed throughout the gym.
"Correct!" Blaine exclaimed.
"I didn't know Chandelure was native to Unova." Georgia commented.
"Neither did I." Caps admitted.
"It most certainly is," Eric said, "The Ghost-type Elite Four member, Shauntal, uses a Chandelure in battle, and it's powerful."
2 questions down, 4 more to go. We can do this!
"Next question!" Blaine said.
The monitor soon switched to five images: a leaf, a water drop, a snowflake, an insect, and a rock.
"On the screen are five different types: Grass, Water, Ice, Bug, and Rock," Blaine explained, "Which types are super-effective against Fire-types, and which types are weak against Fire-types?"
Nina smiled and raised her hand with a grin.
"I know, I know!" she said enthusiastically, "Rock and Water-types are super-effective against Fire-types, whereas Ice, Bug, and Grass-types are weak against Fire-types."
Another ding sound went off.
"Correct!" Blaine said.
"Yes!" Nina cheered, "Thank you, Pokémon Trainer School!"
"Nice goin', Nina!" Georgia said.
"You didn't miss a beat." I chuckled.
"Alright, next question! They're only gonna get harder from here!"
The monitor then switched to a familiar-looking Pokémon.
Hey, that's Delphox. If I remember correctly, it's a Pokémon native to Kalos, where Kat's from.
"This Pokémon is Delphox, a Fire/Psychic-type," Blaine said, "However, does anyone know the species of Pokémon Delphox is?"
Its species? Blaine wasn't kidding when he said the questions were getting harder.
"That's an easy one," Kat said suddenly, "Delphox is known as the Fox Pokémon."
A ding sound echoed throughout the gym
"Correct!" Blaine said.
"Whoa, quick thinking, Kat!" Eric said.
"I didn't know that at all." I admitted.
"Delphox is native to Kalos, and a great friend of mine owns one." Kat said.
"Alrighty, next question!"
The monitor switched to a picture of a familiar lizard-like Pokémon.
Wait, isn't that...?
"This Pokémon is called Salazzle, a Pokémon native to the Alola region," Blaine said, "Can anyone tell me its typings?"
As I stared at the Pokémon, the answer came to me.
If I remember correctly, Salazzle is a Poison/Fire-type Pokémon, right? Raven used one during the Battle Royal back home.
"Oh, I know this one," Caps said suddenly, "Salazzle is a Poison/Fire-type Pokémon."
Another ding sound rang throughout the gym.
"Correct!" Blaine said.
"Wow, Caps," Georgia said, "I never would've guessed Poison as its other type."
"I have faced many Salazzle in my time," Caps said, "While they have proven to be annoying when it comes to their speed and poison tricks, my beloved Beheeyem makes quick work of them."
"That's right," Eric commented, "Psychic-types are super-effective against Poison-types."
The self-proclaimed Champion nodded with a question.
"Alright, kids, we're down to our final question," Blaine said, "If you guys get this answer right, I will reward you with the badge you need for the scavenger hunt."
The monitor switched to a picture of a Houndoom.
"Houndoom is a very well-known Pokémon in the Johto region," Blaine said, "But, who here knows the color of shiny Houndoom?"
The others and I glanced at one another with uncertainty.
This is hard. If he showed a picture of a shiny Rapidash, Ponyta, or Ninetales, that would've been fine since I've encountered all three.
"I think I know this one." Georgia said suddenly.
"Do you?" Blaine questioned, "Well then, what's the answer, kid?"
Georgia glanced at us before taking a deep breath.
"Shiny Houndoom's color is blue." Georgia said.
There was a pause after the cowgirl answered. Then, fire-colored confetti shot out from the stage.
"That is correct!" Blaine exclaimed.
The others and I cheered.
"Way to go, Georgia!" Nina cheered, embracing the cowgirl.
"Nice going!" Eric said.
Blaine smiled as he hopped off the stage, clapping.
"Well done, kids," Blaine said, "You certainly know your Fire-type Pokémon. And with that, I reward you with the Volcano Badge!"
The man opened his hand and presented a crimson-colored badge that resembled a small flame. Georgia smiled as she took the badge from the gym leader's hand.
"Much obliged, Blaine." Georgia said, placing the badge in the bag.
"Of course," he said, "Oh! Before you go, I'm supposed to give you this."
The man reached into his pocket before pulling out a folded paper.
"Your next clue to your next destination." Blaine said, handing it to me.
I took the clue and nodded.
"Thanks, Blaine." I said.
"You're welcome, kid," he said, "Good luck on the scavenger hunt!"
Waving goodbye to the Fire-type gym leader, the others and I walked out of the gym.
"So, what does the clue say?" Eric asked.
I unfolded the paper and read the clue aloud.
"Your next location is across the sea; its name is a shade you'd never think. To find your next clue to fill you with glee, find the ninja whose Gym Badge is pink."
"It sounds very similar to the last clue," Kat commented, "Georgia, do you know what place this clue's talking about?"
Georgia hummed as she scanned the paper.
"Eric, can I see that map?" Georgia asked.
The Unovan nodded before pulling out the map and opening it.
"Well, we're here," Nina said, pointing at the island, "The clue says across the sea. It wouldn't have us go back to Pallet Town, would it?"
"Nope. From there to here, we crossed a bay, but to get where we need to go, we have to cross the sea," Georgia said, pointing around the map, "And the only place closest to Cinnabar Island besides Pallet Town is... here!"
The cowgirl soon pointed to a place with a small beach.
"That's Fuschia City." Georgia said.
"Fuschia..." Caps mumbled, "Isn't that a shade of purple?
"No, actually, it's a shade of pink," Nina said before her eyes widened, "Its name a shade you'd never think!"
"Then Fushcia City is where we're headed next." I said.
"But before we go, we need to get you a Tyrunt." Kat said, nudging my arm.
I looked at the others, and they nodded. I chuckled before turning to Georgia.
"So, which way is the Pokémon Lab?" I asked.
"Follow me!" Georgia said.
The cowgirl gestured for us to follow as she sprinted ahead. Following Georgia, I noticed other groups of people jogging up to the gym.
Looks like they're on their way to collect the badge, too. Hopefully, the revival doesn't take too long, and we can get back on track.
As we approached the lab, I marveled at the white and blue building with a large solar panel on top. When we arrived, the glass doors slid open and welcomed us into a foyer with scientists and charts of fossil Pokémon worldwide.
Wow, this place is impressive.
"Welcome to the Cinnabar Pokémon Lab," said the scientist behind the counter, "How can I help you?"
"I was wondering if you could revive this fossil for me." I said, pulling out the Jaw Fossil.
The scientist took the fossil and examined it.
"Ah, the Jaw Fossil, native to Kalos," he said, "It seems to be in wonderful condition. Yes, I'll be able to revive this fossil for you! I shan't be long!"
The scientist smiled before disappearing into a backroom. After a few minutes, the scientist returned with a Pokéball in hand.
"The revival was a success!" he said, handing me the Pokéball, "I went ahead and put the little guy in a Pokéball for you."
"Thank you so much!" I said.
After waving goodbye, the others and I walked outside and away from the building.
"Call it out!" Nina said excitedly.
Libby, Angel, and Cleffa let out excited cries.
"Okay, okay," I chuckled, tossing the Pokéball, "Tyrunt, come on out!"
At my command, a little brown Pokémon appeared with a mighty roar.
I remember this little guy! I've seen him before at the Dragonet Den!
I took out my Pokédex and scanned the familiar Pokémon.
"Tyrunt, the Royal Heir Pokémon. This Pokémon is selfish and likes to be pampered. It can also inflict grievous wounds on its Trainer just by playing around."
I smiled before walking up to the Pokémon and crouched in front of it.
"Hey there, Tyrunt," I said, "I'm Eragona, and this is Libby."
Libby let out a friendly cry, only for the Tyrunt to tilt its head. I grinned before placing a hand on its large head.
"Welcome to the team, buddy," I said, "I promise you're gonna grow up to be big and strong in no time!"
The Tyrunt smiled before leaning into my touch with a friendly cry.
"He is so cute!" Nina said.
"What are you gonna name him, Era?" Eric asked.
I hummed in thought as I examined the fossil Pokémon. Then, the perfect name came to mind.
"How about... King," I said, "Since he and his evolution were viewed as royalty in ancient times."
"That is a wonderful name, Eragona." Caps said.
I chuckled before turning back to the Tyrunt.
"So, how about it?" I asked, "Do you want to be called King?"
The Royal Heir Pokémon let out a happy roar before licking my cheek.
"King, it is then!" I laughed.
I stood up before retracting my new Pokémon.
"Come on, gang," I said, "Let's head to Fuschia City and get the next badge!"
When the others agreed, we followed Georgia to the eastern side of the island.
We have the Volcano Badge secured, as well as a new friend. I can't wait to see what King is capable of. Since he and his evolution were considered royalty, I can only imagine what special tricks this fossil has in store!
