Chapter 29

2 weeks later...

"Yiyeon-ah, Yiyeon-ah!"

The mentioned girl could only peek from under the blankets. Her head was still throbbing because she went home late due to clubworks last night, and she didn't even eat dinner.

"It's Saturday! Let's go out!" Yikyung said as he pulled his sister off the bed.

She fell on the floor and could only glare ather brother. "What in the world, Yikyung?!" She groaned as she stood up to place her comforter back in the bed. "I don't wanna go. I still have to catch up with the latest lessons since I'm lagging behind because of club-related activities." Yiyeon laid down once again and pulled her comforter over her head. "Go out with Hyunjin, if you want."

Yikyung pulled her comforter and pulled her up, with more strength this time. "Come on, it wouldn't be bad to take a break once in a while~"

"Shouldn't you be preparing for your finals next month, too?" Yiyeon raises a brow. "And I thought that you have to make a report about your internship in Los Angeles?"

Her brother rolled his eyes and pushed her out of her room. "Seeing all of the lessons I have to study makes me dizzy. So let's go out!"

Yiyeon picked her comforter up and placed it on her bed. She looked at Yikyung and groaned, "Fine, but I'm not spending any money. Everything's on you." With that, she grabbed her towel and went inside the bathroom before Yikyung could say anything.

"That girl just... used a reverse psychology technique on me, didn't she?" He looked at Hyunjin, who was now standing by the doorway. "When the hell did you get here?"

The younger boy shrugged, "Hyung, you asked me to help you wake her up but you got here before I did."

***

"Hyung, do we have some tokens left?" Hyunjin asked Yikyung, who was busy sipping his iced americano.

"Yeah, here," The older male gave Hyunjin the tokens. "If you guys still want to play, I could buy more tokens."

Hyunjin's eyes seemed to sparkle, "Nice!" He said as he inserted two tokens into the basketball machine.

Yiyeon clapped her hands, "Show me the dignity of the most valuable player during the last game in Busan!" She crossed her arms.

"You didn't have to pressure me like that!" Hyunjin hissed, but Yiyeon could only scoff.

"Don't tell me you're chickening out because of a damn machine," she muttered under her breath, which made Yikyung laugh.

The timer began and the balls started rolling downwards. Hyunjin wasted no time and threw the balls towards the ring.

"Go, Hyunjin!" Yiyeon and Yikyung cheered.

The girl clapped her hands, amused at Hyunjin's concentration, even if he was just playing at the arcade. She looked around and noticed that there were a couple of people watching her cousin play.

It was normal for people to casually walk by and watch people play at an arcade, but Hyunjin was attracting a crowd.

"Is he a professional basketball player?"

"I heard the girl say earlier that he was the most valuable player during the game in Busan."

"So he is a basketball player!"

"Isn't that obvious, Chanhee?"

Yiyeon could only laugh. Even at the past game, there were quite a lot of people who asked Hyunjin for a photo. It wouldn't be surprising if these girls would ask him for a photo, too.

"Wow, I guess Hyunjin's that attractive," Yikyung chuckled as he grabbed a pretzel from the container that his sister was holding. "Has it been that long? It feels like I've been gone for too long. Like, the last time I was here, Hyunjin could barely shoot a 3-point shot."

His sister chuckled, "He improved... like, a lot." She said, and smiled.

More people have gathered around, and some of them were looking at Yikyung, too. Yiyeon could only hide her face in embarrassment.

"They're checking you out," she whispered.

Yikyung stood up properly and leaned down to whisper to his sister, "How the hell could you say that?"

"Well, I have a brother. Aside from that, I have a cousin who's always with me at school. I also have two boy bestfriends, and—" Yiyeon bit her tongue to stop herself from talking.

Her brother raised a brow, and sipped his coffee, "And what?"

"Look! Hyunjin was able to beat the high score!" She pointed at the scoreboard as she tugged Yikyung's sleeves. "Hyunjin-ah, you're doing well!"

10 more seconds left on the clock, and Hyunjin was able to shoot most, if not all, of the balls that the machine provided.

"And what, Yiyeon-ah?" Yikyung tapped her shoulder.

The girl sighed, Yikyung could be stubborn sometimes, and this time, is one of the times of his stubbornness.

"I used to have a boyfriend, too," she sighed. "It's bad when my friends are being attacked by girls from another school just for a photo. With Hyunjin, I can't do anything about it, but it gets worse when it comes to Jeno." Yiyeon chuckled.

"You and Jeno have broken up?!" He exclaimed.

"I haven't told you?"

"Idiot! I was in LA!" Yikyung hissed.

Hyunjin's game ended and they didn't even notice that he was already making his way back. Yikyung handed him his coffee and the younger thanked him.

"I was gone for like—I don't know, two minutes, and you guys are already at each other's throats!" Hyunjin said as they start to walk away.

Yiyeon looked back at the people whose eyes were still on Hyunjin and Yikyung. She noticed that some girls were glaring at her, too.

She hid her face in embarrassment for the nth time and sighed, "Remind me not to go out with you two again."

"Why?" Yikyung asked.

"You have no choice. We go to the same school," Hyunjin said nonchalantly.

"Hyunjin-ah, did you know that Yiyeon and Jeno have broken up?" Yikyung asked Hyunjin.

The latter nodded, "I pretty much know the whole story, and what's happening between the two of them now."

"What?! So am I the only one who doesn't know any shit?!" Yikyung widened his eyes at his sister. "And I thought I was your brother."

"Well, you are my brother, but won't be for long if you keep on pushing me to talk in public," Yiyeon threatens.

They continued to walk around to look for games they haven't played yet, until they stopped at a zombie shooting game.

Yikyung handed Yiyeon his coffee and inserted the remaining two tokens inside the machine. He loaded his gun as the game started to load.

Yiyeon flinched because of the sudden shout that was a part of the sound effects. Hyunjin scoffed, and pretended that he did not see it.

"There's a park nearby this mall. Do you wanna stroll there after Yikyung-hyung finishes the game?" Hyunjin asked.

"Sure, why not?" She shrugged.

****

The three headed for the park, like what Hyunjin said, after Yikyung played the zombie shooting game.

"Today's pretty cloudy. So I figured that you guys might want to take a walk," Hyunjin explained.

Yiyeon was walking ahead, and the two boys were following her. She knew the park pretty well since it wasn't the first time she's been there.

"Hey, Yiyeon! Slow down!" Yikyung yelled. "You're in a rush. Is everything alright? Do you know this place?"

Yiyeon suddenly stopped walking and tears her gaze away.

She nodded, "We used to play volleyball here a lot back in middle school." Now, her attention was on the people who were playing volleyball nearby.

They were even able to set up a net, which was more fascinating.

Hyunjin nudged her, "Do you want me to talk to them and ask if you could join?"

Yiyeon shook her head, "What for? I haven't played for like—two years." She sighed and just watched the people play.

They were around their age, and there were five of them. There were three people in one team, while the other team had two.

Yiyeon crossed her arms and sighed contently, "It's also been a while since I have watched a volleyball game this close."

"Then play!" Yikyung said, excitedly. "I know that you've been itching to play."

The boy went towards their direction, and Yiyeon jumped up to grab the ball. One of the players ran towards them, and Yiyeon could only squint her eyes at the girl who was about to retrieve the ball.

"Yunseo?"

"Yiyeon?!"

Meanwhile, Hyunjin and Yikyung had no idea about what's happening. They don't know how Yiyeon knew the girl, nor they knew that Yiyeon knew a lot of people.

"It's been a while! What brought you here?!" The other girl, Yunseo, asked while hugging Yiyeon.

Yiyeon broke from the hug and smiled at her, "I'm with my cousin and my brother." She said, glancing at the two who just did a light bow. "What about you? I almost didn't recognize you!"

"I'm good," Yunseo smiled. "Do you want to play with us—" She then paused upon remembering what happened during Yiyeon's last game. "I-I mean... if it's okay?"

Yiyeon looked at her and then looked at the two boys behind her. Sighing, she slowly nodded. Yunseo jumped in joy as she went back to her team—the two-people team.

Yiyeon took a deep breath and gave Yikyung his sling bag. "Drop that bag once and I'll stab you," she threatens.

Although Yikyung knew that she wouldn't do it, he felt a rush of nervousness run through him. "Wait, you know that girl?"

She nods, "Remember when I was the vice-captain?" Yiyeon asked, and the two nodded. "Well, she was the captain that time. She's an outside hitter."

(Quick note to those who don't know or play volleyball: To word it easily, an outside hitter is also known as the left-side hitter and is the lead attacker in offensive strategy. Meanwhile, Yiyeon's position used to be a middle blocker (it was mentioned in one of the chapters before). Middle blockers are usually the tallest people on the team and their roles are to prevent the spikes of the opposing team from coming in contact with their side of the court.)

Yiyeon ran towards where the players were and stopped upon realizing that she didn't know any of them. Aside from Yunseo, of course.

"Guys! I do hope that it's fine with you, but this is Yiyeon. She used to be one of the middle blockers in our team back in middle school," Yunseo said as she introduces her to the people.

The players welcomed her as they gave her the ball.

"Your serve," Yunseo grinned.

Meanwhile, Yikyung and Hyunjin could only gasp at the power of Yiyeon's serve. Like she had said earlier, it has been years since she played. But they wonder why everything seemed the same. It was as if she never stopped playing volleyball.

"Did she... really stop playing?" Yikyung asked, engrossed in the game in front of him. "Or was she still practicing if you're not looking?"

Hyunjin shook his head, "She has never held a ball ever since her last game if I could remember correctly. Well, I'm not sure because I only moved in this year..."

"Yiyeon!" Yunseo yelled as she tossed the ball in her direction.

The said girl took a deep breath before running towards the net. She braced herself before leaping and closed her eyes before the ball made contact with her palm.

The echoing sound of the ball bouncing away was heard. The players in the other team could only watch as the ball roll away from them.

One of the boys ran to retrieve the ball, as the other two stared at Yiyeon, who couldn't believe that she was able to spike the ball.

She stared at her palm which was slowly turning red. It has been a while since she had felt pain because of the game. Yiyeon doesn't want to admit it, but hitting the ball with her palm felt nice.

"Yiyeon-ssi! Were you really a middle blocker?" One of them asked.

"Y-Yeah..."

Yunseo stepped in between them as she patted Yiyeon's back. "This girl right here is one of, if not, the best players in our team, and was my vice-captain!"

"Wait, really?!" The guy who was wearing a light blue tank top gasped as he went under the net to talk to Yunseo and Yiyeon. "I was really impressed with your serve earlier. You're good at spiking, too. That's why I didn't believe Yunseo earlier when she said that you were a middle blocker!"

"Th-Thanks..." She said as she looked down.

"That guy holding the ball is Kim Juwon." Juwon waved his hand and Yiyeon smiled. "This guy who barely talks is Yuki, this girl's name is Ady, and this guy—"

The guy wearing the tank top interrupted Yunseo as he extended his hand in front of Yiyeon.

"Jacob Bae. Nice to meet you."

Yiyeon smiles.
