Step Nine
Step Nine: Remember the other attached person? Make that person a priority.
"Hi, Elodie," Matthew said as I opened the front door.
I smiled, but he looked kind of stiff and worried.
"Come in, the party is coming out pretty good," I said, opening the door a bit wider, "But you know, that's how Evangeline's parties are, right?"
Still, no laughs, no sounds, nothing.
"Let's go upstairs," he said, grabbing my hand and leading me through a bunch of sweaty, drunk, dancing people.
It was Evangeline's "Happy New Year" party, and as always—well, since she started the tradition two years ago—it was packed with people.
It was one of the best parties of the whole year, besides Tiffany Chester's "End of The School Year" party.
We got to Eva's room, and went out to the balcony, I checked my watch to see what time was it—11:47PM.
"Hey, we have thirteen minutes until midnight, want to do something in the meanwhile?" I asked Matthew as I stared at him with adoring eyes, he was admiring the sky.
He shook his head and chuckled in a way that scared me a bit, but I ignored it.
"Do you know how many times I told myself not to fall in love when I was younger?" He said, looking at me with disappointment.
I furrowed my eyebrows, I wanted to ask what was he talking about, but he continued speaking.
"I fell in love, Elodie, and I didn't want to, but I couldn't help it. I am so mad with myself because I promised I would never love anyone else as much as I loved her, and if you want to know who I am talking about—because you seem really confused—I had a girlfriend, a year ago, she was beautiful, and smart, but on Christmas day, we were driving towards a party, and she got distracted," he made a pause, remembering the details, "She was the one driving, so getting distracted wasn't the best thing she could do at night, with snow falling, when two headlights are rushing directly at you."
I gasped, a tear fell out of his eye.
"She was in a coma for a few days, then on New Years Eve, when the sky was like this—dark and full of stars—she woke up," he smiled, "She said, 'What are you doing there, staring at me like an idiot?' I laughed with some tears threatening to fall down my cheeks, but it was not long until they were falling like a cascade, because I fell in love with her, and I couldn't have her."
He returned to looking at the sky, "My mom, she told me we were moving out of town when I got out of Christmas break, so just like that, our relationship fell apart."
"I'm sorry, I didn't, I don't," I sighed, "Know what to say."
"Don't say anything, just stay with me, right now, right here," he said, and I just nodded.
I looked down at my watch once again—11:55PM.
"Just so you know, I had never fallen in love before," I said, looking down at the group of people in the front yard, "I always hated the idea of love and relationships, because I had never had one."
I shook my head, "I thought love was something stupid, I thought relationships didn't last, and marriages failed 99.9% of the time, but I guess I was wrong."
He looked at me, and I stared back into his green eyes.
"So, did you fall in love?" He asked.
"Yes, I believe I did," I said, shrugging, "What about you?"
"I did," he responded, "Just, not with you."
"10, 9, 8," the crowd started, and by the time they reached one, Matthew had left and my heart was broken.
He left you.

It only gets sadder, I feel a bit sorry.
