Chapter Two: Accidents, Accidents, Pain

After I fed Elodie at six am and put her back in her crib I decided to go make myself some coffee. I walked into the kitchen and went to get a mug down. But I stopped when I saw a note sitting on the counter. There were only two words written on it in Jack's handwriting.
I'm sorry.
My tired brain thought nothing of this. I made coffee and sat in the chair to drink to drink it and check my Instagram, since Zack was sleeping on the couch. About twenty minutes later he woke up. He made his way out to the kitchen.
"Damnit!" Zack cursed and then ran out the door. And then I realized what the note meant. I stood up slowly and walked to the door. I looked out into the driveway. Zack was standing there staring down the road. The car was gone. And Jack was too. I started to cry and covered my mouth with my hand. I should have known something like that would happen. I wanted to sit down and cry, but Elodie started fussing and I pushed my problems to the back of my mind. I wiped the tears off my face and walked down the hall. For the first two days he was gone I ignored it. I had to take care of my baby girl. And then on day three I was running on two hours of sleep and only one cup of coffee and I got ready to go down stairs to push laundry. About halfway down the staircase I started feeling kind of dizzy and then my foot slipped and I fell. I shrieked as I tumbled down the stairs.
"Anna?" I heard Leo call.
"Leo!" My right hand hurt like hell and my left ankle was laying at a bad angle. I could hear him walking toward the stairs.
"Oh my god! What happened?" He asked when he saw me from the top of the stairs. "Zack!"
"I fell." I was starting to cry. He came down the stairs and knelt beside me. "My foot and my wrist." I cradled my hand to my chest and wiped my eyes with my other hand.
"Alright. Let's get you upstairs and we'll go from there?" I nodded and grabbed the railing to pull myself up. Before good though, Leo picked me up and carried my bridle style up the stairs. He took me in the living room and laid me on the couch. Zack had me try to move my wrist and my ankle. My ankle was swelling and the slightest movement of it and my wrist made me want to scream.
"We're gonna have to go to the hospital." Zack said, sitting on the coffee table.
"How? Jack took the car." He sighed.
"I know. Just. . . give me a minute." He walked into the kitchen and Leo came in with two baggies of ice. "I'll be right back." I nodded. He walked back into the kitchen. I heard the two of them talking, but I couldn't make out what they were saying. I wasn't trying very hard, too focused on my pain. Leo came back in.
"Alex and Lisa are headed over." I still had tears running down my face. I nodded and sniffed.
"Do you want to wake Elodie up or have Lisa stay here with her?"
"She'll need to eat soon. A-and she might not wake up even if you move her. S-s-so bring her. Please." I felt so weak and pitiful laying there, crying.
"Okay." He kissed the top of my head. "I'll put her in her car seat."
"Thank you." I barely managed to whisper it. He left again and shortly after that the doorbell rang.
"Hello?" Lisa called as she opened the door.
"Hi." I croaked. They came into the living room.
"Hey, Princess." I wiped at my face again. Leo came in with Elodie in her car seat. Alex took Elodie from Leo and Leo carried me out to the car. The drive was silent other than Elodie making little noises in her sleep. When we reached the hospital we had to sit in the waiting room for close two hours. Elodie woke up a half hour after we got there so with much difficulty and help from Lisa I fed her. Zack and Alex tried to get a hold of Jack, but couldn't. When I finally saw a doctor I was examined, sent for X-rays and informed that my ankle was fractured and my wrist sprained. They put a black brace on my wrist and a splint on my ankle. I was given crutches, told to take Tylenol and Advil for the pain, told I would need to come back the next day to have a cast put on and to put ice on it to keep the swelling down, and then sent home with a ridiculous hospital bill. Alex and Lisa stuck around for a little bit, taking turns holding Elodie and asking about Jack. I laid on the couch with my foot propped up, not making eye contact. I felt really bad because Zack and Leo were doing everything. They kept telling me to sit down and not worry, but I couldn't help it.
The next morning we went back to the hospital and they put a cast on my ankle. I did my best to do things for myself, but getting around was hard since I could only use one of the crutches. Feeding Elodie was also harder with only one hand.
About three days later I was doing better. It was getting easier to get around. I was trying to cut an apple to have with my lunch and I cut my palm. Having the brace on my left hand made it really hard. The cut was huge and bleeding a lot.
"Leo!"
"Yeah?" He called from somewhere down the hall.
"I need help! Now!" Hearing the panic in my voice he came rushing down the hall.
"What happened?" He asked when he saw me with a dish towel wrapped around my hand. Blood was soaking through.
"I cut myself." I unwrapped it a bit and showed it to him.
"You're probably gonna need stitches." I groaned in annoyance.
"Fuck."
"Zack!" Zack took one look at the blood soaked towel wrapped around my hand and said,
"I'll text Alex." Zack went back down the hall and returned shortly with his phone. "He's headed over. I'll get Elodie in her car seat." He picked her up out of the swing and put her in her car seat. I stood by the counter, keeping my weight of my broken ankle and keeping pressure on my hand. There was a knock on the door before it opened and Alex came in.
"Hey." I gave him a weak smile. "You know, knives are sharp, Princess." I stuck my tongue out at him. Zack took Elodie out to the car and Leo helped me.
An hour and a half, twenty stitches and no feeling in my left hand I was sitting in the backseat beside Elodie, trying not to cry. I felt like such an invalid. Now I couldn't get around at all until my hand healed and I could use my crutch again. When we got home Leo took Elodie in and Zack carried me in. As we walked into the house it hit me just how different the house looked. A baby swing sat in the middle of the floor, little socks and pacifiers sat on the counter and a basket of mine and Elodie's laundry sat on the table. Zack sat me on the couch.
"I can't fucking do anything!" I sat with my foot on the coffee table.
"Hey, it's okay. We'll help you." Zack said as he sat down beside me.
"I'm-just. Fuck this." Using my good foot I kicked a book off the table. I sighed. "Sorry. I shouldn't have done that." Zack put the book back. "I need to feed Elodie. Leo? Can you bring Elodie to me?"
"Of course." Leo brought me Elodie and then sat down beside me. Zack walked out to the kitchen. I could hear him and Alex talking quietly for a few minutes before Alex came into the living room. I heard a thud that sounded suspiciously like Zack's fist hitting the wall. I sighed as I looked at Alex.
"Why did he leave?" My voice cracked as I asked Alex the dreaded question.
"I don't know princess." He sat down beside me, "I don't know."
