1)Comas and Croaking
"I'm sorry for your loss."
Those were the words that kept being thrown at Jo Monez. Sure, she hated it, but it's not like she could tell everyone not to say it. It's the natural thing people say once a loved one is lost.
"Jo." Liam H walked up and hugged her.
Liam Harolds, not Hemsworth. He likes being called Liam H since sometimes people expect Liam Hemsworth.
"Just a little longer." He put his arm around her.
Jo leaned her head on his shoulder. "I know. But it feels like light-years away."
Liam walked her to a seat in the front. "You ready to go up soon?"
Jo muttered, "What do you think?"
They sat in silence for a while after that. Not awkward, they were just lost in their thoughts.
"Now, Joanna Monez will be saying the eulogy."
Jo walked up, with slow, steady, steps. Clearing her throat, she spoke as calm and clear as possible. "I have no idea how to write a eulogy. I looked some up online but I didn't like them. So, here goes. Jonah Monez was my brother. My twin brother. If he wasn't my twin, I would still be sad, but it's a different feeling. When you're a twin, the second you're both born, it's as if you both share everything. Like your heart and soul are instantly connected."
"Not only that, but we understood each other. We knew what we were each thinking. That's the thing about twins, we know each other's feelings."
"I don't expect any of you to understand. I'm just trying to explain my relationship with him. Because not only was he my brother he was my best friend. He was a rock for many people, a brother to people who aren't family, a role model to others, or maybe a son to those without one. He was a bright person with an amazing personality. He looked for the best in people because he was the best person he could be. I hope we can all take his example and be like him, which is hard because, to many people, he's perfect."
"I know that he wouldn't want people to be brought down by his passing. he would want all of us to keep going with our heads held high. He always said to give a chance to everyone, whether you think they deserve it or not. Thank you." Applause boomed from the audience as Jo walked down.

That was four weeks ago. Now Jo's on the phone with the hospital. "Hi. I'm Jo Monez, Gloria Monez's daughter. I was wondering if my mom left work."
"Yes, she left yesterday. I already told you." The lady on the phone explained.
"I understand that, but my mom still hasn't come home. She hasn't been answering any of my calls and I know she has her phone with her. I was just wondering if one of her colleagues could call her or check in the see if she came back to work."
"Why would she come back to work?" The lady asked snootily.
"Because there was a major storm yesterday. Maybe she decided against coming home because of it."
"Or maybe" The lady spoke rudely "she drove in the storm and died!"
Jo paused.
"Hello?" The lady asked tentatively.
"How can you be so heartless?! Hopefully, you're not in a relationship, or else I pray for whoever has to suffer because of your presence you flipping witch!" Jo hung up and called Liam. "Can you pick me up? I need to go to the hospital."
A few minutes later, Jo heard Liam honking. "Thanks for picking me up on such short notice," Jo told him as she climbed in.
"No problem. But now can explain why we need to go to the hospital?"
"My mom still hasn't come from work. And before you ask, I did call the front desk but there was some rude-bass witch there, whenever I call."
"Oh. And she hasn't been answering your calls, right?" Liam asked.
Jo nodded. "Can I borrow your phone?"
"Is that even a question?" Liam smiled.
After a few tries, Jo gave up. "No answer."
Liam looked at her. "Hey, don't lose hope. Maybe she's at work, trying to get to you at home. She could've dropped her phone yesterday during the storm."
"Yeah. Of course, I should really stop thinking bad things could've happened." Jo nodded, trying to convince herself.
Liam nodded, "Good."
A few minutes later they pulled into the parking lot.
"What exactly are you going to ask the receptionist?" Liam asked.
"Nothing."
He raised an eyebrow at Jo.
"The girl who I called will probably still be there and she was extremely rude."
"So what are we going to do?" Liam asked.
"We have two options. One is for you to distract the girl so I can sneak by."
"Ok, I'm hoping you're kidding about that one. But, what's the other one?" Liam interrupted.
"Let me finish. Ahem. We could go up and act normal. Then you could do all the talking. Although she might think I'm the girl who called earlier."
"How about you just stay in the background?"
"Good idea." Jo nodded.
They walked in, nervous about what they were about to do. Although, they were nervous for different reasons. Liam was nervous they were going to get in trouble. While Jo was afraid to find out what has happened to her mother.
"Hello. How may I help you?" The receptionist asked.
"Hi. I'm looking for Gloria Monez." Liam leaned against the counter.
The lady looked at me and gestured, "Is she with you?"
Liam turned towards me, a little hesitant. "Um, yes."
The lady took no notice of it and turned to her computer, "Your names?"
"I'm Liam Howards. And this is Jo-lie. Jolie. Yep, Jolie."
"I'm going to need to know her- sorry-Jolie's last name." The lady informed Liam.
"Yes. Of course. Her last name. Jolie's last name is...Joeling. Jolie Joeling."
Jo stiffed at that last name. Ooh, he is so gonna get it when this is all over. He knows better than to use that name, she thought.
The second the lady turned to her computer to type it in, Liam turned to Jo and mouthed "I'm sorry."
"Okay. You two can go up to the cafeteria ward. Go up to the stairs over there," the lady pointed "and go straight then take the fourth right and you'll see the cafeteria ward."
Jo took a half step to ask a question but Liam gave her a look that stopped her in her tracks.
"Can't you just tell us if Ms. Monez is here or not?" Liam asked.
"Oh. She is here."
Jo could barely contain herself.
Liam grabbed Jo's arm before she could speak. "Can you tell us?"
"Listen, kid. I'm an intern. I don't have a special job. I just check people in and help with their general questions. If you want to know where Ms. Monez is, then you should go to the area in which she works."
"Oh, okay," Liam responded.
Jo and Liam turned to where the intern pointed them to go to.
"Wait!"
They turned back around and the intern was typing on her computer.
"Okay. I think I can actually help a little. I'm checking the check-ins from the last 24 hours and a Gloria Monez has been checked in after her hours. The good news is that she's still in this building. The bad news is she came in during the storm. The worse news is she came in on a stretcher. The awful news is that she's in the comatose ward."
"I know where that is!" Jo exclaimed to Liam. She turned and sprinted up the stairs and Liam followed.
A few minutes later, they had entered the comatose ward. They ran by until they heard someone calling them.
"Hey! Come over here!" A man told them. Once they were in front of his desk, he spoke. "Who are you? Why are you here? Who are you here to see?"
This time, Jo spoke. "I'm Jo Monez. This is Liam Harolds. We are here to see my mom, Gloria Monez."
"Ah, Ms. Monez. We tried getting in touch with her family but her phone wasn't working. I suppose it got wet in the storm yesterday." The man said.
"Ok, yeah, whatever. Where is she?" Jo demanded.
"Woah Woah Woah. Hold your horses, young lady. You can't just barge in there. Especially for your mom, she is in a very fragile state. She can hear things still and if her mind gets too overworked, she could very well die."
"How?" Liam asked.
"Well, yesterday she was driving home from work. In the storm. It wasn't a very good idea but I guess she thought the storm wasn't that strong. Either way, the winds were too powerful and flipped her car over. As it was on its side, another car crashed into it, shoving the car into a very hard oak tree. This series of events made Ms. Monez hit her head many times and very severely. She is in very delicate care. I will not lie to you, she only has a 10% chance of surviving."
Liam squeezed Jo's hand.
"Let me tell you," the man started again "that miracles do happen. It wouldn't be the first time someone with so little chance of surviving has survived. There are people who have had a 5% chance of surviving who have survived."
Jo looked at the man. "Thank you, sir. Now, can we see my mother?"
The man nodded. "Of course. Right this way." Liam and Jo followed after the man. He opened the door. "I'll leave you guys alone. Just remember you have a limited amount of time with her right now, so say what you need to say. I'll be back in a bit."
Liam nodded. "Thank you again."
When the door closed, Jo lifted her eyes to see something that made her sick and she knew she would never get it out of her mind. Jo tried to make the words come out of her mouth but she couldn't. Then she tried again and it worked.
Jo opened her mouth and croaked, "Mom?"
A/N
Hi! I know I recently started September 9, but I had an idea and I actually took notes. I think that shows that I really feel something for this book.
Also, I would really appreciate it if you could comment. I could use some constructive criticism. I don't usually write in the second-person so I just want to know what you guys think.
