Chapter 28: New allies
YNs' POV:
Morro spins around and prepares to defend you. "Wrayth?" He says in surprise. "Do I have to fight you too?"
This ghost seems to be about 15 years old, and his face is wrapped in bandages. He looks like a ghostly mummy. Then he smiles, revealing pointed, dagger-like fangs. "No, you don't have to fight me, Master. I'm no more a supporter of Bansha than Ghoul-Tar is." Morro relaxes somewhat at this.
"How'd you know we were here?" You ask.
"Ghoul-Tar told me. He saw you two hiding here under the ship, and he immediately came to alert me."
"Good Ghoul-Tar." You murmur.
"Yes. He decided to get me all on his own. It was actually very clever of him. He told Bansha that we should patrol together, so she let us go."
"Master and girl back!" Ghoul-Tar appears, and he looks overjoyed to see you back again. He hugs you happily, squeezing the breath right out of you.
"Ghoul-Tar, can't.. Breathe..." You gasp.
"Oops." He releases you and gives you a crazy grin. You let out a wheezy little laugh, and he giggles. Then he turns to Morro, whose eyes widen in alarm.
"Oh no..." Morro lets out an absolutely adorable little squeak as Ghoul-Tar grabs him and picks him up, hugging him as well. Ghoul-Tar's slightly taller than Morro, so the boy ghosts' feet just clear the top of the platform. Morro struggles, but to no avail, so he sighs in resignation and gives up. Wrayth and you watch with evident amusement.
"A little help, please..." Morro pleads.
You reach up and tap Ghoul-Tar on the shoulder. "Release him, please. We have work to do." He immediately lets go of Morro, who straightens up and tries to regain his composure with an air of injured dignity.
"First off, thank you, Ghoul-Tar. You were wonderful." You continue. Ghoul-Tar blushes and bashfully lowers his head, a delighted expression on his face.
Morro glances back and forth between the two of you, sputtering. -"B-but I-"
"-And thank you, Morro, for saving my life." You say quietly, avoiding looking into his eyes. "Without you, I might've.. I could've.. I would've died if you hadn't-"
"I understand. You're welcome, YN." He says it as gruffly as he can, and then softly, so that the other ghosts can't hear, adds, "I'd do it again for you in an instant, YN." He looks directly into your eyes, his gaze searching yours, as if he's looking for an answer to some question.
"Morro?" You ask him. "Are you okay?"
"Never better, YN, or more sure."
"What are you talking about?" His burning gaze is making you slightly uncomfortable. He opens his mouth to say something, hesitates, then closes it again. He's looking distinctly nervous. He fiddles with the hem of his gi, his hands trembling a bit.
"Morro, you're acting very odd. What's wrong?" All of a sudden, you remember your little argument from earlier. "Morro, you were trying to tell me something before. You were saying that you l-" Morro quickly covers your mouth with his hand again and shoots an embarrassed look at the other two ghosts. They grin at him, but Morro turns his attention back towards you and ignores them.
"I'll tell you later, YN, I promise. But I have a feeling that now isn't the correct time for this." He whispers into your ear. He takes his hand off of your mouth.
"Fine. But we're talking about this later." You huff.
"I'm sure we will." He smiles. "But now, we attack." Ghoul-Tar summons his scythe, and Wrayth, a long chain with a curved blade on one end.
Ghoul-Tar hauls himself up onto the deck of the ship and bellows, "GHOUL-TAR FIGHT!!!" The rest of you shrug at each other and follow him onto the battleground.
