Chapter 27: Time limit
YNs' POV:
You're directly under the Ghost Bounty, which is a scene of great confusion. Ghosts are milling about, floating all around it, and several go right by you with a kind of nervous energy. You press into Morro, and he uses his ghostly ability, turning you invisible every time another ghost passes by. You use your powers to make a platform that's attached to the keel, so you don't fall, and remain hidden on it.
"They seem really on edge." You whisper.
"As well they should be. They'll be trying to protect her."
"Her Bansha, or her, The Preeminent?"
"Both. Though they are somewhat one and the same now." Morro replies.
"What do you mean?"
Morro sighs. "Back when I was.. villainously inclined, I was able to rip up whole buildings with my powers, I could even create a giant whirlwind with them."
"Okay? You're the Master of Wind. So..."
"But I never reached my True Potential, YN."
"But, to channel that much power without having reached your-" A ghost approaches, and Morro makes you invisible. The ghost hesitates, sensing something, but then he passes by the two of you, and you flicker into sight again once he's gone. "-True Potential is impossible!" You finish.
"It's not impossible when you have a supremely powerful entity as your Master. In return for my undying loyalty-" You cough meaningfully. "-Er, right. My allegiance with The Preeminent, I became stronger. But it was also a curse, as with all things granted by her. Yes, I had heightened powers, but the cost was great. I began to lose my humanity, my empathy for the plights of others. She used my anger at not being the green ninja for her own purposes of crossing into Ninjago, so that she could consume the souls of all those residing in this Realm. In that way, she would be all-powerful, and there would be none left to stand in her way."
"But why did she need you?" You ask.
"She may be a Realm, but she is also a ghost. She needed a vessel for her power to take hold here, to enable her to cross. Because of her size, she couldn't arrive here without my harboring a fragment of her essence."
"Why not?" You press him.
"Alright. The simplest way to explain this is: picture Ninjago and the Cursed Realm side-by-side. Now, imagine that the only thing separating them is a flimsy curtain, that's the Ethereal Divide. Ghosts are like particles, given the means and opportunity, they can pass through the curtain without much difficulty. But the Preeminent is like a large insect, she's too big to be able to pass in between the gaps in the weave. She needed a rip in it. So she gave me a fraction of her soul for me to carry into Ninjago. It was sort of like.. jumpstarting the process. With a part of her here, it would be much easier for her to cross over."
"Why?"
He pauses, looking thoughtful, and mulls over your question for a moment. "Hmmm. I suppose because a ghost needs a way to take on a physical form, or it cannot remain in the living world. We can stay for a few days, maybe a week, sometimes more, but eventually we are called back to one of the Realms of the deceased."
"But then that means..."
"Yes, YN. I don't have much time left." He gives you a pain-filled glance and then quickly smiles, trying to cover up his sadness. "-But I refuse to leave until I've beaten Bansha all the way back to the Departed Realm for hurting you."
"But it's not fair!" You cry out, upset.
"I'm sorry, YN. I should never have kidnapped you in the first place. Now we're all paying the price for my selfishness."
A cold voice hisses into your ear. "And you will both pay the price when Bansha learns that you are here."
