How To Use Cliffhangers Effectively
Cliffhangers are every writer's secret weapon. We love watching our readers squirm as we leave them hanging.
The easiest way to leave a chapter on a cliffhanger is to end the chapter with a question. This leaves the reader to ponder over what will happen next and heightens their curiosity.
A slightly more subtle way to end a chapter on a cliffhanger is to hint at things that happen later on in the book without revealing what they are.
For example, I could finish the chapter with the line 'If only I had known what would happen to me.' This makes the reader wonder what is going to happen to the protagonist.
Cliffhangers are great to use in your story as they keep the reader interested and they also build up tension.
