BAM!

Caught your attention didn't I? Well that's exactly what you have to do when starting off chapters; you want to engage your readers from the first sentence of your chapters so they don't get bored. There are a few ways to do this:

1. Start with direct speech. This immediately throws the reader into the scene, and immerses them in the chapter.

2. Start with a powerful, one-sentence paragraph. This opening statement will intrigue readers, and creates suspense from the beginning.

3. Start with action. This engages the reader straight away, and makes the chapter flow well. Starting with a participle adds to this, for example:

Running, I panted breathlessly...

is more interesting than:

I ran and panted breathlessly.
