I get asked this question a lot, maybe at least once a week, because getting followers can sometimes seem like a difficult task.

The answer is simple in one respect- follow people. But choosing who you follow is the bit that some people struggle with.

Of course you can follow your favourite writers or the type of people with thousands of followers- but to get people to follow you back you have to think about it logically.

The people that will most likely follow you back are ones that are active, have an equal ratio of followers and following (or even better, they follow more people than they have as followers, this means they too are trying to get followers) and, in an ideal world, write or read in your genre.

Now whenever people take this advice on board, they tend to follow a few new people... Then they complain when they only get a few more followers. Whenever I make a new account, I follow hundreds of accounts that fit into the criteria above, because this gives immediate exposure to my books.

It's not that I recommend not following accounts with thousands of followers  (if you're just following them because you like them then that's different to what I'm talking about) but I know that most accounts with thousands of followers don't follow back every person.

For me personally, I follow people back when I've either had a really nice conversation with them and made friends with them, if they've been leaving funny comments on my books or for various other reasons.

It's more likely that you'll gain followers over time, so don't stress if you only have three followers after being on Wattpad for a month- I was the exact same.
