*If you've read Water in a Time of Thirst you'll notice familiar characters, but I've also added new ones. What's important to know is that you don't have to read Water in a Time of Thirst in order to read this story. I'm writing this as a stand-alone, but it also works as a prequel since it takes place about ten years before the other story.*

P.S. the cast list below are faces that popped into my head from time to time while writing, but the characters are not by any means based on these actors. This is NOT a fanfic. Feel free to imagine the characters however you see them in your mind while reading. Or, if you feel that seeing a cast list might distract you from the experience of imagining the characters on your own, then please ignore this chapter. I promise I won't be offended :)

Charlie Hunnam as Corbin

A Water Witcher with the ability to find water sources deep in the ground. It's a magnetism he can feel as if the water calls him towards it. This makes his skills especially unique compared to those who use dowsing rods to locate water.

Anson Mount as Coyote

A brutish cowboy known for getting into bar brawls, he makes his money getting people safely across the U.S/Canadian border. He loves good moonshine, pretty women, a quality beard and his bear fur coat.

Michael Peña as Miguel a.k.a Gunner

A retired war veteran who spent his time doing missions across the Mexican border, he now lives his days completely whipped by his wife Clara. Yet, he's not opposed to picking up a gun and reminding people why his nickname is Gunner.

Olivia Wild as Clara

Sister to Coyote, she fell in love with Gunner while growing up near the U.S/Mexican border where her family owned a ranch. She is also a Water Witcher, but her skills aren't as sharp as Corbin's. Her weakness is revealing her ability by helping people in need, even if it puts her in danger and makes her loved ones furious.

Iain Glen as Archibald

A smuggler with connections in all of the wrong places. He's known to frequent the saloons in the desert and uses prostitutes to do his dirty work by finding men he can rob.

Ana De Armas as Luna

A woman with the ability to see people and the daughter of Archibald. As a child, she witnessed soldados invade her grandfather's coffee plantation. They killed her family, so she and her father fled Cuba, never looking back. She helps Archibald with robbing people.

Henry Golding as Jasper

Orphaned as a small boy, he wandered the streets of Florida alone until Archibald took him under his wing. He learned to be a smuggler and thief and loves Luna, although sometimes he's not sure if it's brotherly love or more.

Dave Bautista as Merric

After seeing the farming communities around him dry up due to the drought, he took matters into his own hands by becoming the leader of The Hounds. They search the country for Water Witchers, capture them and then sell them to farmers for the highest bid as slaves.

A drifter with a bad habit she can't kick. While she might be physically attractive, her face has burn scars that turn many people away in disgust.
