The Waterbending Scroll

Aya's POV

Aang was pacing around on Appa's saddle, breathing heavily.

"Would you sit down?" Sokka asked from his perch on Appa's head. "If we hit a bump, you'll go flying off. What's bugging you anyway?"

"It's what Avatar Roku said. I'm supposed to master all four elements before that comet arrives." Aang explained, worriedly.

"Well let's see. You pretty much-mastered airbending and that only took you a hundred and twelve." Sokka told Aang in a sarcastic tone. "I'm pretty sure you can master three more elements by next summer."

Aang put his hands on his head, panicking. "I haven't even started waterbending and we're still weeks away from the North Pole. What am I gonna do?!"

I gently grabbed Aang's arm and pulled him down in front of me. "Calm down, it's going to be okay."

"If you want, I can try to teach you some of the stuff I know." Katara offered.

"You'd do that?" Aang smiled.

Katara nods and looks over the side of Appa's saddle. "We'll need to find a good source of water first."

"Maybe we can find a puddle for you to splash in." Sokka joked sarcastically.

----

Soon enough, we were all standing in front of a beautiful waterfall and river.

"Nice puddle." Sokka frowned.

Appa flopped down into the river and caused a huge splash to occur. Satisfied, Appa rolls onto his back and floats.

Aang took off his shirt and pants. "Don't start without me, boy!"

"Remember the reason we're here." Katara reminded Aang, blankly.

Aang stopped and looked at my sister. "Oh right. Time to practice waterbending." He put his clothes back on.

"Great," Sokka spoke sarcastically. "What are we suppose to do?"

"You could... clean the gunk out of Appa's toes, Sokka?" Aang suggested, picking up a branch with a bushel of leaves at the end.

I giggled to myself, looking at my brother who was frowning.

"So, while you guys are playing in the water, I'm supposed to be hard at work picking mud out of a giant bison's feet?"

Aang smiled, cheerfully. 'Mud and bugs!"

"Okay." Sokka took the branch and went over to Appa.

"I'll go explore for a bit," I told them, before walking away.

"Don't get lost," Katara warned me.

"I won't," I told her as I entered the area with trees.

I checked the area and it wasn't much of a sight. Just a bunch of trees, nothing special.

I strolled through the trees a bit more until I saw a small flower patch come into view. I beamed happily and went over to it.

The flowers were beautiful and had many different types. I had a great idea and began to pick some flowers from the patch.

I eventually picked up ten flowers and sat down. I crafted a flower crown out of the flowers and it turned out wonderfully. The flowers were mainly purple, which is my favorite color.

Once it was finished, I placed it on my head and went over to a small puddle. The crown fit perfectly, except for the fact that my ponytail got in the way. I took it out and let my long hair flow to my lower back. I put my hair into a waterfall braid and let it fall onto my shoulder.

Minutes later, I headed back to my siblings and Aang.

I walked out of the small forest and saw Aang creating a huge powerful wave of water. I gasped, surprised and watched the wave crash onto my older brother.

I slowly approached Aang and Katara.

"Looks like I got the hang of the move. What else you got?" Aang asked my sister, who looked angry.

"That's enough practicing for today," Katara told him, frowning.

Sokka's head popped out of the river. "Yeah, I'll say. You just practiced our supplies down the river."

To the left of Sokka was our supplies floating away.

Aang's face turned into a guilty one. "Uh, sorry. I'm sure we find somewhere to replace all this stuff."

"My life was hard enough when you were just an Airbender." Sokka frowned and sank back into the water.

"Wow, you're a good teacher, Katara." I praised my sister, who was frowning. She faced me and her eyes widened.

"Woah, Aya. I love your hair and your flower crown." Katara smiled and touched my hair. "You look so pretty."

"Thanks, Katara." I giggled and turned to Aang, who didn't realize my new appearance.

"Hey, Aang, how did practicing waterbending go?" I asked him. Once he realized something was different, his just gazed at me.

"It-it was great." His face turned bright red and I giggled.

"Good." I smiled and he just smiled at me.

----

We found a city market and port nearby the waterfall and decided to check it out. It wasn't exactly the friendliest place, there were a lot of armed men here. I was quite nervous to be around them and stayed near my brother.

Time passed and Sokka went to buy supplies from a different part of the market. Katara, Aang, and I waited patiently for his return.

Sokka appeared from the alleyway with a bag over his shoulder. "We've got exactly three copper pieces left from the money King Bumi gave us. Let's spend it wisely."

Aang hopped onto his feet. "Uh, make that two copper pieces, Sokka. I couldn't say no to this whistle." He pulled out a white whistle that looked like bison. Aang took a huge breath and blew into it, but it barely made a sound.

"It doesn't even work," Sokka informed Aang, after taking his fingers out of his ears.

Aang stopped blowing when Momo squawked at him.

"See? Even Momo thinks it's a piece of junk." Sokka motioned to the lemur.

Aang's face became gloomy. I rubbed his shoulder and Momo crawled onto my arm and licked my cheek.

"No offense Aang, but I'll hold the money from now on," Katara suggested and Aang gave her the copper pieces.

We walked around the port a bit and this man came up to us, offering something.

"Oh! You there, I can see from your clothing that you're world-traveling types. Perhaps I can interest you in some exotic curious?"

Aang walked back to the man. "Sure! What are curious?"

The man blinks. "I'm not entirely sure, but we got'em!" The man smiled at Aang and leads him into the ship.

We entered the ship and checked out the strange items the man has for sale.

I saw a beautiful pearl necklace on the shelf in front of me and Momo seemed to like it too. I went to touch it but jumped when I heard a voice.

"I've never seen such a fine specimen of lemur." I turned around to find a strange man standing in the doorway with a parrot on his shoulder. "That beast would fetch me a hefty sum if you'd be interested in bartering." The strange man walked into the light and his parrot squawked at us.

Momo squawked back at the parrot and crawled over to Aang. Sokka moved me away from the strange man.

"Momo's not for sale." Aang grabbed his lemur and held him protectively.

"Look at this, Aang!" Katara gasped and Aang and I went over to her. My sister was gazing at a scroll. "It's a waterbending scroll. Check out these crazy moves!"

The scroll consisted of some waterbending techniques and moves. That will be very useful for Katara and Aang.

"Where did you get a waterbending scroll?" Aang asked the strange man.

The strange man slammed his hand onto the scroll and pulled it away. "Let's just say, I got it up North, at a most reasonable price, free." He rolled it up and put it away.

"Wait a minute... Sea-loving traders, with suspiciously acquired merchandise." Sokka raised his eyebrow at the strange man. "and pet reptile birds?" He turned to the guy with the long hair. "You guys are pirates!"

"We prefer to think of ourselves as 'high-risk traders." The pirate with long hair put his arm around a terrified Sokka.

Katara was holding our copper pieces in her hand with Aang and me next to her. The strange man with the parrot, who I am assuming is the captain of the ship, was standing on the other side of the counter.

"So, how much for the, uh, traded scroll?" Katars asked the captain.

"I've already got a buyer, a nobleman in the Earth Kingdom." The Captain informed us and leaned forward. "Unless of course, you kids have two hundred gold pieces on you right now."

Aang, Katara, and I turned away to discuss.

"I know how to deal with these guys, Aya and Katara. Pirates love to haggle." Aang assured us and Katara handed Aang the money without saying a word. "Watch and learn."

Aang went up to the captain and leaned against it. Katara and I shared an amused look but watched the Avatar closely.

Aang began to speak in a pirate voice. "Let's say to the price of, one copper piece!" Aang flipped the copper piece and proudly presented it to the captain.

The captain laughed hysterically. "The price if two hundred gold pieces. I don't haggle items that are rare."

Katara nudged me and I turned to her. She showed me the scroll and hid it in her dress. I gasped and she covered my mouth.

"I need this scroll and so does Aang," Katara told me, seriously, before removing her hand. I didn't bother protesting and turned to Aang who was still talking to the captain.

"Aang, can we get out of here? I feel like we're getting weird looks." Katara whispered to Aang.

"Aye, we be casting off now!" Aang told the captain before we walked away. I wasn't exactly happy with my sister for stealing the scroll, she has never stolen something before.

"What was that all about, Katara?" Aang questioned my sister as we left the ship.

"Yeah, I was just starting to browse through their boomerang collection," Sokka added.

Katara held her arms to her chest. "I'll just feel a lot better once we get away from here."

I met eyes with Katara, who had a look of nervousness in her blue ones.

"Hey, you! Get back here!" The pirate called out from the ship. We turned around and I became nervous and so did my sister.

"Well, well. Look who's come to their senses. Told you the haggling world pay off." Aang smiled.

Suddenly the group of armed pirates jumped out of the boat and swung their weapons at us. I hugged my brother's arm in fear.

"I don't think these pirates are here to trade with us!" I stuttered in fear and immediately ran away from the pirates with the others following me. We ran down an alleyway hopefully cutting them off.

We turned down another corner and Katara freezes a puddle behind us in hopes a pirate would slip on it. We ran by a cabbage merchant and I accidentally ran into him, making him drop his cabbage.

"Sorry, my bad!" I called out, before picking up speed. I looked back to see that Aang had airbended the cart into the group of pirates behind us.

Poor cabbage man.

Out of nowhere, a group of pirates jumps out of another street making us freeze. I whined and felt Aang pull me down the opposite direction of the pirates.

"I hope that lemur of yours has nine lives!" One of the pirate's yell as they chased down to a dead end and corner us.

"Now, who gets to taste the steel of my blade first?" The pirate threatened, swinging his blade at us.

"No thanks." Aang hurls a blast of air at the pirates and sends them backward. We ran forward and suddenly Aang opened his glider. "Grad on tight!"

"Aang! I thought we were running away from the pirates!" Katara yelled as we three jumped onto Aang's glider and we lifted off into the air. I yelped in fear but didn't let go.

"Just hang on!" Aang told us and we flew over the heads of the pirates. I accidentally kicked one of them, but I was glad it happened. Aang flew us into the distance, with my siblings and I yelling in fear.

We landed back at the waterfall and I was exhausted from running from all those pirates.

"I used to kind of look up to pirates, but those guys are terrible," Aang mentioned, putting his glider away.

Katara grinned mischievously. "I know. That's why I took this." She took out the waterbending scroll she stole from the ship.

"No way." Aang gasped in surprise, standing up. I just stayed quiet and didn't bother berating my sister about what I thought.

"Isn't it great?" Katara asked excitedly.

"No wonder they were trying to hack us up! You stole their waterbending scroll!" Sokka told our sister.

"I prefer to think of it as high-risk trading." Katara joked, folding her arms over her chest.

Aang and I both chuckled.

"Good one, Katara." I praised.

"Sokka, where do you think they got it? They stole it from a waterbender." Katara pointed out.

"It doesn't matter. You put all of our lives in danger just so you could learn some stupid fancy splashes." Sokka scolded our sister.

"These are real waterbending forms. You know how crucial it is for Aang to learn waterbending." Katara argued, glaring at him.

Sokka scoffed, walking away. "Whatever."

"Well, what's done it done. We have it, we might as well learn from it." Aang suggested.

I'm not proud of my sister's actions, but Aang will learn a lot from this scroll.

Time passed and Katara was practicing moves from the scroll.

"I just want to try this one move first and then it's all yours. Here, hold it open for me." Katara informed Aang, before handing to me. "The single water whip. Look doable." Katara the move but ended up whipping herself in the forehead. "Ow!"

Sokka laughed at Katara's attempt and she glares at him.

"What's so funny?"

"I'm sorry, but you deserved that," Sokka told her and looked at Aang. "You've be duped; she's only interested in teaching herself."

"Aang will get his turn once I figure out the water whip." Katara angrily stated and attempted the move again. This time she ended up whipping Momo in the butt. "Ugh! Why can't I get this stupid move?"

"You'll get it." Aang grinned at her, walking over to the river. "You just got to shift your weight through the stances." Aang attempts the water whip and does it perfectly. "There, see, the key to bending is--"

"Will you please shut your air hole? Believe it or not, your infinite wisdom gets a little old sometimes! Why don't we just throw the scroll away since you're so naturally gifted!" Katara screamed at Aang, irritated. I gasped at my sister.

"Katara!" I went up to Aang and rubbed his shoulder. Tears began to form in his eyes.

"What?" Katara asked Sokka and I, before looking at Aang. She realized her mistake and apologized. "Oh my gosh, Aang, I am so sorry, I don't know what came over me. But you know what, it won't happen again." She gave Aang the scroll. "Here, this is yours. I don't want to have anything to do with it anymore."

"It's okay, Katara," Aang told her.

"What about Momo? He's the real victim here." Sokka pointed to Momo, who was rubbing his butt.

Katara bent down to pet the lemur. "I'm sorry, Momo."

"And what about me? There was that time you-"

"No more apologies!" Katara exclaimed, making Momo hop away.

----

I woke up the next morning and saw that Sokka was searching through our bag.

"I don't believe it." Sokka shook his head in disbelief.

"What's wrong?" I asked, sitting up and rubbing my gold eyes. I heard yawning next to me and saw Aang.

"She took the scroll! She's obsessed with that thing. It's just a matter of time before she gets us all in deep-"

I suddenly felt a ropes being wrapped around my hands and I got lunged forward. "Ahhhh!!"

The pirate went to attack me but I rolled out of the way. I grabbed my dagger and Sokka grabbed his boomerang and we charged at the pirate. Moments later, the pirate left with Aang in a net.

"Aang!" I called out.

"Oh, what? We're not good enough to kidnap?" Sokka asked, sarcastically and moments later a net got shot us and dragged us both away.

"You just had to say something, didn't ya?" I scowled at my brother, who grinned sheepishly.

The pirates held Aang, Sokka, and I at the river and tied our hands up. Katara was tied to a tree with Zuko and his guards standing by. The ropes were really tight and impossible to break free from.

"Nice work." Zuko praised the pirates.

"Aang, this is all my fault," Katara told Aang, blaming herself.

"No Katara, it isn't." Aang shook his head.

"Yeah, it kind of is." The old Fire Nation man nodded and that got a glare from Katara.

"Give me the boy," Zuko ordered the Captain.

"You give us the scroll." The captain countered.

"You're really gonna hand over the Avatar for a stupid piece of parchment?" I protested, trying to mess with the pirates.

"Don't listen to her, she's trying to turn us against each other!" Zuko exclaimed, pointing at me.

"Your friend is the Avatar?" The captain questioned, looking at Aang.

"Sure is, and I'll bet he'll fetch a lot more on the black market than that fancy scroll." Sokka grinned at the captain.

"My brother has a point," I added on.

'Shut your mouths, you Water Tribe peasants!" Zuko yelled, furiously.

"Yeah, Sokka, Aya, you two really should shut your mouths." Aang agreed

"My sister and I are just saying it's bad business sense. Think how much the Fire Lord would pay for the Avatar. You guys would be set for life." Sokka explained, getting smiles from some of the pirates.

"Keep the scroll; we can buy a hundred with the reward we'll get for the kid." The Captain told the Fire Prince, before turning to leave with Aang, Sokka, and I.

"You'll regret breaking a deal with me."I heard Zuko tell him and right then Zuko and two of the guards send a fire blast at us. We all jump back, except for one, who runs toward Zuko throwing smoke bombs at them. As the fight ensures, Sokka, Aang, and I struggle in our ropes trying to break free before we are attacked. Suddenly pirates jump in front of us, saving us from the soldiers. The pirates throw down smoke bombs and smoke surrounded us.

I crawled through the smoke, trying to find Sokka or Aang.

"Aang, Sokka?" I called out, trying not to get sliced by a sword.

"I'm right here." I saw Sokka crawling into view and I smiled with relief. He was freed from the ropes and used his boomerang to free me.

"I'm over here! Follow my voice!" I heard Aang shout, but couldn't find him.

"Where? I can't find you!" Sokka shouted.

"I'm right here!" Aang shouted and moments later shouted again. "Uh! Nevermind, I'll find you!"

Sokk and I managed to escape the smoke cloud and right on cue, Aang vaulted over us. "Run!"

We saw my sister, who was trying to get the boat back into the water and ran over to her.

"Katara, you're okay!" I exclaimed, happily.

"Help me get this boat back in the water so we can get outta here," Katara told us and we assisted my sister in pushing the boat. We tried out hardest, but the boat wouldn't budge.

"We need a team of rhinos to budge this ship," Sokka mentioned.

"A team of rhinos or two waterbenders." Aang corrected, smiling at Katara.

Aang and Katara waterbended the boat back into the river in a small amount of time.

"Everybody in!" I exclaimed. We got into the ship and set sail into the river.

Soon enough, the pirated were on Zuko's boat following us.

"Sokka, can't you make it go any faster?" Aang asked my brother.

"I don't know how. This thing wasn't made by the Water Tribe." Sokka told Aang.

I saw a bunch of pirates jump onto our ship. I backed away slowly as they approached me. My dagger was right in front of me but I couldn't reach it.

Suddenly a huge wave swept away the pirates in one motion. I saw Aang hop down in front of me and I smiled at me.

I noticed one pirate hadn't fallen off the ship and I nudged my sister.

"Now's your chance."

She gladly took the opportunity and created a perfect water whip to throw the last pirate off. I beamed at my sister and hugged.

"Good job, Katara."

"Hey, you did the water whip." Aang smiled and Katara beamed up at him.

"I couldn't have down it without your help." She told him.

"Would you three, quit congratulating each other and help me out?" My brother called out. Sokka was being held by two pirates.  Aang jumped into action and airbended the two pirates of the ship before helping Sokka up.

I gasped when I saw a huge waterfall ahead.

"Aang! Look!" I pointed toward the waterfall.

"Oh, no," Aang said, staring at the waterfall.

I saw a pirate come up behind Aang with a knife in his hand. I ran down to the pirate and knocked him off the ship. Sokka came up behind me and I saw Aang blowing into his whistle.

"Have you lost your mind?" Sokka asked Aang. "This is no time for flute practice!"

We were approaching the waterfall fast and I was terrified we were gonna fall.

"We can stop the boat! Aang, together, push and pull the water!" Katara instructed Aang, as they pushed and pulled the water simultaneously. This caused the boat to slow down and cause a whirlpool to happen.

"It's working, it's slowing down! We're doing it!"

"But we have another problem!" I turn my heard to my brother, who was pointing at Zuko's boat that was approaching fast. The boat rammed right into us and we all slide down to the other side of the ship.

Sokka grabbed me as Aang shouted. "Jump!"

We all yelled in fear as we fell towards the river below. Luckily before we hit the water, Appa caught us just in time.

"I knew a bison whistle would come in handy." Aang smiled at his whistle. I breathed out, laying on my back. "Thanks, Appa!

"Yeah, we owe you one," Sokka told Appa, who roared loudly.

Appa got a good distance away from the waterfall and flew into the clouds.

"Aang, I still owe you an apology. You were just so good at waterbending without really trying. I got so competitive that I put us all in danger, I'm sorry." Katara told Aang, sincerely.

"That's okay, Katara." Aang smiled at her.

"Besides. who needs that stupid scroll anyways?" Katara shrugged, looking down.

"Is that really how you feel?" Sokka asked, sarcastically. He pulled the scroll out and Katara reached for it.

"The scroll!"

Sokka put his hand out, keeping her from grabbing it. "First, what did you learn?"

"Stealing is wrong," Katara said, before taking the scroll. "Unless it's from pirates."

Aang and I laugh.

"Good one, Katara."
