The Southern Air Temple
Aya's POV
Heading to the North Pole will take a while, so Aang decided to make a few stops before we get to our destination. The Southern Air Temple. Aang was excited to go see it again, but it's been a century since we last saw it and I'm going to guess a lot has changed over time.
We camped out on a small beach for the night before heading there. Sokka was still asleep, as always. He is always the last one to wake up.
"Wait till you see it, Aya and Katara. The Air Temple is one of the most beautiful places in the world." Aang praised, wrapping the reigns around Appa's horns.
Katara and I shared a look before she spoke to him.
"Aang I know you're excited but it's been a hundred years since you've been home."
"That's why I'm so excited!" His face lit up with joy.
"A lot can change in that time," I added, leaning on the saddle.
"I know but I need to see it for myself." Aang hopped off Appa and gracefully floated to the ground.
He walked up to Sokka's sleeping body to wake him up.
"Wake up, Sokka! Air Temple, here we come!" Aang exclaimed.
Sokka groaned and turned over. "Sleep now. Temple later."
Aang had an idea. He picked up a twig he found on the ground.
"Sokka! Wake up! There's a prickle snake in your sleeping bag!" Aang warned, rubbing the twig over Sokka's sleeping bag.
Sokka yelled and hopped around, frantically. "GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF!" He landed on his stomach and grunted.
Katara and I laughed.
"Great! You're awake, let's go!" Aang suggested.
----
I don't think I will ever get over the fact that I'm on a flying bison. These creatures are amazing.
We were on our way to the Air Temple and I sat up front with Aang, while my siblings stayed on the saddle.
"Hey! Who ate all my blubbed seal jerky?" Sokka asked from behind us. Aang glanced back at him, with a face of guilt. "I used it to start the campfire last night."
"You what?" Sokka exclaimed in disbelief, then sighed. "No wonder the flame smelled so good."
We ascended toward a series of mountains.
"The Patola Mountain Range! We're almost there!" Aang exclaimed excitedly.
"Aang, before we get to the temple, I want to talk to you about the airbenders," I began, pulling on the hem of my sleeve, nervously.
"What about them?" Aang asked
I took a deep breathed before explaining
"Well, I just want you to be prepared for what you might see." I averted her eyes from him. "The Fire Nation is ruthless, they killed my mother. They could've done the same to your people."
"Just because no one has seen an Airbender doesn't mean the fire nation killed them all." Aang pointed out, glancing at me. "They probably escaped."
"Aang, I know it's hard to except." I placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You don't understand, Aya. The only way to get to an Air Temple is on a flying bison and I doubt the Fire Nation has any flying bison." Aang assured me before petting Appa. "Right, Appa?"
Appa growled in response.
"Yip-Yip!"
Appa sped up and passed through the mountains. Wind blasted in my face, making me shut my eyes.
The wind calmed down and I opened my gold eyes. I saw a beautiful temple in front of me.
"There it is! The Southern Air Temple." Aang said.
I was astonished by the view.
"Aang, it's amazing!" I exclaimed.
"It's beautiful!" Katara added.
Aang gazed at his home. "We're home, buddy. We're home."
Aang landed Appa at the bottom of the temple and sprinted up the path.
Katara, Sokka, and I trailed behind.
"So, where do I get something to eat?" Sokka questioned. clenching his stomach.
"You're lucky enough to be one of the first outsiders to ever visit an Airbender Temple and all you can think about is food," Katara berated our brother.
"It's Sokka, what do you expect?" I chuckled with amusement.
"Hey, I'm just a simple guy with simple needs." Sokka defended.
"So, that's where my friends and I would play Airball." Aang pointed at something below us. Us three caught up and saw a court with towering wooden poles. Aang pointed to a ledge. "And over there is where the bison would sleep. And over there-" Aang sighed heavily.
"What's wrong?" Aang asked.
"This place used to be filled with monks and lemurs and bison. Now there's just a bunch of weeds." Aang explained, dolefully. "I can't believe how much things have changed."
My siblings and I shared a look before joining him.
"So, this 'Airball game', how do you play?" Sokka wondered, trying to cheer Aang up.
I saw Aang 's face brighten up.
Katara and I watched from a distance as the boys played the game and I have to admit it looks fun.
The concept of the game is pretty simple but it's hard when you are a nonbender. Aang beat Sokka seven times in a row. It made me smile knowing Aang was enjoying himself again.
All you basically had to do was keep the ball from going into the goal, which Sokka failed at doing.
Aang laughed when he watched Sokka get launched back by the ball and hit the grass.
"Aang-7! Sokka-0!" Aang cheered from the court.
"Making him feel better is putting me in a world of hurt," Sokka grumbled, getting up. Suddenly Sokka saw something and crawled forward. We followed his actions.
"Girls, check this out," Sokka informed. My eyes widened at the sight. It was a helmet from the Fire Nation.
"Fire Nation." Katara and I said.
"We should tell him," Sokka suggested.
I didn't want to ruin his cheerful mood but he deserves to know.
"Aang, there's something you need to see," I called out to the Avatar.
"Okay!" Aang made his way over with the ball. I hated this I really did. "What is it?"
I hung my head.
Suddenly, a bunch of snow fell and landed on my brother and the helmet. I looked back up and saw my sister giving me a soft smile. I guess she doesn't want to see Aang hurting either.
"Uhh...just a new waterbending move I learned." Katara covered up as Sokka brushed the snow off of him.
"Nice one!" Aang praised. "But enough practicing. We have a whole temple to see." Aang continued walking.
"You know, you two can't protect him forever," Sokka informed us.
I folded my arms and followed Aang. He's still a child, he'll figure it out when the time is right.
Aang headed inside the temple, while we three trailed behind.
"Girls, the firebenders were here. You can't pretend they weren't." Sokka argued, as my sister and I continued to follow Aang.
"We can for Aang's sake," I stated and Sokka strolled next to us. "If Aang finds out the Fire Nation invaded his home, he'll be devastated." Katara nodded, agreeing with me.
"Hey, guys! I want you to meet somebody!" Aang called out, gesturing to a statue of an Airbender.
"Who's that?" Sokka asked.
"Monk Gyatso." Aang introduced, staring at the statue. "The greatest Airbender in the world. He taught me everything I know." Aang bowed.
I touched Aang's shoulder, comforting him. "You must miss him."
"Yeah." Aang walked inside.
"Where are you going?" Katara asked.
"The Air Temple Sanctuary." Aang paused and glanced at us. "There's someone I'm ready to meet."
I looked at my siblings who just shrugged. We followed Aang inside the sanctuary. We came up to a large door with the Air element symbol on it.
"But Aang no one could survive in there for a hundred years." Katara protested.
"It's not impossible; I survived in the iceberg for that long." Aang pointed out.
"Good point." Katara agreed.
"There might be someone in there who could help Aang." I wondered, placing a hand on my hip.
"Aya's right, whoever is in there might help me figure out this whole Avatar thing." Aang agreed.
"And whoever's in there might have a medley of delicious cured meats!" Sokka rubbed his hands together, anxiously and ran up to the door. He slammed right into it and tried his hardest to open it but it wouldn't budge.
"I don't suppose you have a key?" Sokka asked with hope.
"The key Sokka is airbending," Aang informed and stepped forward. Us three moved behind Aang.
Aang bends air into the doors' ornate locking mechanism, which caused the locks to disengage. I smiled with relief when the door slowly opened.
"Hello?!" Aang called out, walking inside the dark temple. "Anyone home?"
Us three followed the Airbender. The temple was dark but the sunlight from the outside shined in, making it easier to see.
The sanctuary was filled with many statues that were standing in a spiral formation.
We strolled through the statues of people, interested in what they are supposed to symbolize.
"Statues?! That's it?" I heard my brother complain. "Where's the meat?"
"Who are all these people?" I asked, not expecting an answer.
"I'm not sure," Aang replied. "But I feel like I know them somehow. Look! That one's an Airbender!" Aang pointed at an Airbender statue."
"And this one's a waterbender." Katara noticed.
I saw an Earthbender next to it. "An Earthbender." I then noticed a pattern. "They're lined up in a pattern." I pointed at each bender. "Air, Water, Earth, and Fire."
"That's the Avatar Cycle," Aang explained.
"Of course." Katara realizes. "They're Avatars. All these people are your past lives Aang."
Aang was fascinated by the previous incarnations of his past lives.
"Wow, there's so many!" He checked out other statues.
"Past lives?" Sokka questioned with disbelief. "Girls, you really believe in that stuff?"
''It's true!" I chirped.
"When the Avatar dies, he is reincarnated into the next nation in the cycle," Katara explained.
I noticed Aang gazing at the last statue in line. I gently shook him to break the trance. "Aang! Snap out of it!" I noticed the avatar he was looking at. "Who is that?"
"That's Avatar Roku, the avatar before me," Aang explained and the others joined us.
"You were a firebender? No wonder I didn't trust you." Sokka teased.
I searched the statue and couldn't find a name.
"There's no writing, how do you know his name?" I asked confused.
"I'm not sure, I just know it somehow." Aang blinked, still gazing at Roku.
Sokka growled, "You just couldn't get any weirder."
Suddenly, a humming sound was heard from the entrance. We quickly hid behind a couple of statues, hoping it wouldn't attack us. My brother and sister hid behind one, while Aang and I huddled together behind a different one.
"Firebender. No one make a sound." Sokka whispered and Katara whacked his arm.
"You're making a sound!" She exclaimed in a hushed tone. Sokka hushed her.
Out of fear, I grabbed Aang's hand. I usually grab someone when I'm frightened, but Aang didn't mind and squeezed it firmly.
"That firebender won't know what hit him." Sokka sat up with his boomerang ready.
Sokka peaked his head out but stayed still. The rest of us peaked our heads out to find a cute, little, lemur.
"Lemur!" Aang and I chirped, happily.
"Dinner." Sokka groaned, hungrily.
"Don't listen to him; You're gonna be my new pet." Aang declared
"Not if I get him first!" Sokka shouted and the two boys leaped at the lemur and chased after the animal.
Katara and I shared a look and then laughed with each other.
After a minute or two, we began to look around the sanctuary more. We stopped at Roku, whose eyes began to glow and then all the other statue's eyes starting glowing. Aang must be doing this.
"Aang." We both said and sprinted out of the temple.
A wind began to blast around the area, causing Katara and me to shield our faces. I found Sokka hiding behind a rock and Aang was bending a windstorm around his body.
"What happened?" I asked, raising my voice.
"He found out firebenders killed Gyatso!" Sokka shouted.
"Oh no! It's his Avatar Spirit." Katara gasped. "He must've triggered it!"
I felt brave at this very moment. "I'm gonna try to calm him down!"
"Well do it, before he blows us off the mountain!" Sokka rushed me, holding our sister.
"Be careful, Aya!" My sister warned me, worriedly.
I subsequently make my way towards Aang. The wind was extremely difficult to walk through, but I managed to stabilize myself. I stepped back when Aang began to fly higher in the air.
I gripped onto a nearby rock and tried my best to console him because I can relate to him.
"Aang, I know you're upset and I know how hard it is to lose someone you love!" I shouted over the deafening worried, feeling my heart ache at the thought of losing my mother. "I went through the same thing when I lost my mom. Monk Gyatso and the other airbenders may be gone, but you still have a family." I glanced at my siblings who joined my side. "Sokka, Katara, and I! We're your family now!"
Slowly, Aang descended from the sky and the wind dies down. Aang's tattoos and eyes continued to glow. We walked up to Aang and Sokka reinforced my statement.
"My sisters and I aren't gonna let anything happened to you. Promise."
"We will always be here," Katara assured him.
I reached for Aangs' hand and grabbed it. The glowing vanished and Aang collapsed into my arms and I gently held him close
"I'm sorry." He apologized, shutting his eyes.
"It's okay." Katara reassured him.
"It wasn't your fault." I rested my head on his.
"But you were right. And if firebenders found this temple, that means that they found the other ones too." Aang explained in a weak voice. "I really am the last Airbender."
I wrapped Aang in a big hug, comforting him. He laid his head on my chest as I tried my best not to cry. My siblings comforted Aang, feeling sad for him.
----
Later, we decided to leave the Air Temple. We stood in the sanctuary waiting for Aang to say his final goodbyes.
"Everything's packed. Are you ready to go?" I stood next to Aang, who was staring at Avatar Roku once again.
"How is Roku suppose to help me if I can't talk to him?" Aang wondered aloud.
"Maybe you'll find a way," Katara appeared from behind me, replying to Aang.
We heard a hum and turned around to find the same lemur from before. The lemur hopped over to Sokka and laid a variety of fruits at his feet. Sokka eagerly devoured the tasty fruits.
"Looks like you made a new friend, Sokka." Aang pointed out.
"Can't talk; must eat," Sokka told us with his mouth full and continued to eat.
Suddenly, the lemur crawled onto Aang's shoulder.
"Hey, little guy." Aang greeted.
Before we descended from the temple, Aang overlooked the temple from a distance.
"You, me, and Appa. We're all that's left of this place. We have to stick together." Aang confirmed to his two new pets.
"Aya, Katara, Sokka." Aang got out attention and we looked at him "Say hello to the newest member of our family." Aang walked over to us with the lemur on his arm.
"What are you gonna name him?" Katars asked.
The lemur hopped over to Sokka and stole his moon peach and hopped back over to Aang.
"Momo." Aang decided.
Sokka stood there shocked by what Momo did, which caused us to laugh.
Night soon fell and we departed from the Air Temple. I saw Aang take one last gaze at his home before it was concealed by clouds.
