The King of Omashu
Aya's POV
"The Earth Kindom City of Omashu!" Aang introduced with wide arms as we approached the giant kingdom in front of us. "I used to always come here to visit my friend, Bumi."
My siblings and I were amazed by the kingdom.
"Wow, we don't have cities like this in the South Pole," Katara stated, astonished.
"They have buildings here that don't melt." Sokka pointed out.
"I wish we had buildings like this," I added.
"Well, let's go, slowpokes! The real fun is inside the city!" Aang exclaimed and flew into the air. He landed a few yards ahead of us.
"Wait, Aang!" Katara called out, making Aang stop. "It could be dangerous if people find out you're the Avatar."
"You need a disguise," Sokka informed.
"So, what am I suppose to do? Grow a mustache?" Aang questioned, in a jokingly way.
I gasped and turned to Appa. "You could use Appa's fur!"
----
I quickly used some of Appa's shed fur and created a makeshift wig and mustache for Aang.
I smiled at my masterpiece, proud of myself.
Aang scratched his head, sighing. "Ugh! This is so itchy! How do you live in this stuff?"
Appa snorted in his face, making me giggle.
"Great! Now you look just like my grandfather!" Sokka complimented Aang.
"Technically, Aang is a hundred and twelve years old." Katara pointed out.
Aang picked up his staff and used it was a walking stick.
"Now, let's get to skipping young whippersnappers!" Aang exclaimed, imitating an old man voice. "The big city awaits!"
Aang used his staff to pretend he had trouble walking.
I looked at my siblings with an odd expression before following the Airbender.
We walked down the pathway to the kingdom.
"You guys are gonna love Omashu! The people are the friendliest in the world!" Aang expressed with a smile.
That's when we saw some guards yelling at a poor man selling cabbages.
"Rotten cabbages! What kind of flam do you think this is?!" The guard yelled at the man and Earthbended his cabbage cart of the side of the path.
The poor man peaked over the side, worried. "No, my cabbages!"
We watched the cart get destroyed and Aang fake smiled. "Just keep smiling."
Katara chuckled nervously as we walked up to the Earth Kingdom guards.
The guard earthbended a rock out of the ground and held it over Aang's head. "State your business!"
Aang moved forward and pointed at the guard.
"My business is my business young man and none of yours!" The guard was freaked out by Aang and jumped the rock, making my siblings and I jump. "I've got half a mind to bend you over my knee and paddle your backside!"
"Settle down, Old Timer. Just tell me who you are." The guard asked him calmly.
"Names' Bonzu. Pippinpaddleopsicoplis... the third!" Aang exclaimed and I decided to step in. "And these are my grandkids."
I walked up with a friendly smile. "Hi, June Pippinpaddleopsicoplis. Nice to meet you."
The guard shifted his eyes between us two. He pointed at me. "You seem like a responsible young lady. See that your grandfather stays out of trouble. Enjoy Omashu." The guard stepped aside so we can pass.
"We will!" I grinned and walked inside the kingdom with everyone.
"Wait a minute!" We stopped when the guard grabbed my brother, who was frightened.
The guard turned Sokka around. "You're a strong young boy. Show some respect for the elderly and carry your grandfathers' bag!"
"Good idea!" Aang grinned and tossed Sokka his bag.
We turned back around to see the wall opening, along with two others opening. The kingdom shocked my siblings and me as we entered the kingdom and scanned the view. It was beautiful
The kingdom was huge compared to our little village back home in the South Pole.
"This is the Omashu delivery system," Aang explained in his normal voice. "Miles and miles of tubes and chutes. Earthbending brings the packages up and gravity brings them down."
"Great, so they get their mail on time." Sokka expressed in a bored tone.
"They do get their mail on time, but my friend Bumi found a better use for this chutes." Aang put a devious smile which couldn't mean anything good.
----
Aang informed us that he and his friend Bumi would slide down the chutes. I was unsure of Aang's idea and so were my siblings. I held onto Aang's waist firmly so I wouldn't fall.
"One ride and then we're off to the North Pole," Aang promised as he moved the basket on the edge of the slide.
"This sounded fun at first, but now that I'm here. I'm started to have second THOUGHTSSSS!" Aang didn't let me finish and slid the basket down the chute.
I wrapped my arms completely around Aang, feeling wind blast in my face. Aang laughed with joy enjoying himself.
Next to us appeared a basket of spears, which merged into our slide. We all yelled in fear as it chased us down the slide. The spears gradually got closer. Sokka ducked and Katara and I leaned forward, so the spears wouldn't kill us. I hid my face in Aang's back.
"I'm on it!" Aang yelled and made the basket jump out of the slide and scraped across many rooftops of several houses, interfered with an earthbender meeting and I got a face full of Aang butt, which I did not enjoy. We ended up getting back onto the chute and slide down it.
"Aang do something! Use your airbending!" Katara yelled.
"Yeah! Good idea!" Aang smiled. "That will make us go even faster!"
Completely misunderstanding Katara, he used his bending to make us speed up. We slid down a steep part of the slide and saw the end of the slide and yelled when another basket appeared. We sighed when it got bended away, but yelled again when another appeared. We smashed right into it and flew out of the basket. Aang luckily used his airbending to bring the basket back to us.
We smashed into a man's house and destroyed his vase, which Aang apologized for. Long story short, we ended up crashing into a man's cabbage cart and smashing it.
"My cabbages! You're gonna pay for this!" He threatened.
"Two cabbages please." Aang grinned sheepishly as the guards surrounded us.
The guards took us captive and brought to the King of Omashu.
----
Aang, Katara, Sokka, and I were taken to the King because of what Aang made us do. The guards made us sit on the floor as the guard talked to the King.
"Your majesty, these juveniles were arrested for vandalism, traveling under false pretenses, and malicious destruction of cabbages." The guard explained to the King.
"Off with their heads! One for each head of cabbage!" The cabbage man demanded, stomping around.
"Silence!" The guard ordered. "Only the king can pass down judgment. What is your judgment, sire."
The king squints his eyes at us and grunts pensively. My siblings, Aang, and I uneasily eye each other, waiting anxiously for a response.
"Throw them..." Us four gasped. "A feast!"
We were confused but slightly relieved. The guard and the cabbage man were bewildered by the king's verdict.
----
Time passed and we were sitting at a richly-filled dining table. The table was filled with many foods and fancy dishes. Momo was enjoying himself.
"The people in my city have gotten fat from too many feasts." The king informed, leaning over Aang and grabbed the chicken leg that was in front of him. "So, I hope you like your chicken with no skin."
"Thanks, but I don't eat meat." Aang declined, politely.
The king turned to my brother. "How about you? I bet you like meat." The king stuffed the chicken into Sokka's mouth, who eats it appreciatively. The king walked over to his seat.
"Is it just me, or is this guy's crown a little crooked?" Katara smiled with amusement, pointing a finger at her head. I nodded, giggling.
"So tell me, young bald one, where are you from?" The king asked Aang, as he sat down.
"I'm from... Kangaroo Island!" Aang replied.
"Oh, Kangaroo Island, eh? I hear that place is really hopping!" The king exclaimed, expecting us to laugh. A moment of silence occurred until Sokka decided to laugh at his unfunny joke. Katara, Aang, and I looked at Sokka with a blank expression.
"What? It was pretty fun." Sokka defended, unsure.
I heard yawning and saw the King stretching his arms. "Well, all these good jokes are making me tired. Guess it's time to hit the hay."
Suddenly the king launched a chicken leg right at Aang. Aang gasped and quickly reacted and caught it in a small airball. The guards gasped at the sight.
Oh no, they know.
"There's an Airbender in our presence and not just any Airbender. The Avatar!" The king exclaimed, rising to his feet. Aang stops airbending the chicken leg, making it fall back onto the plate.
The king sits back down with a satisfied smile. "Now, what do you have to say for yourself, Mr. Pippinpaddleopsicopolis?"
Aang shot up with his hands in the air moments later. "Okay, you caught me. I'm the Avatar. Doing my Avatar thing, keeping the world safe. Everything checks out." Aang checks under the table. "No firebenders here. So, good work, everybody!" I gasped as Aang pulled my siblings and me into a tight embrace. "Love each other, respect all life," Aang began to walk us back towards the door, away from a dismayed looking king. "and don't run with your spears. We'll see you next time!"
We ended up bumping into two guards who crossed their spears blocking our path.
"You can't keep us here! Let us leave!" Katara demanded.
The king picked up a lettuce leaf from his plate and waved it. "Lettuce leaf?" He took a bit of the leaf and I sighed. We aren't getting out of here
"We're in serious trouble. This guy is nuts." Sokka whispered to us.
"Tomorrow, the Avatar will face three deadly challenges. But for now, the guards will show you to your chamber." The king informed us, making Aang's eyes widened.
The guard leaned toward the king. "My liege, do you mean the good chamber or the bad chamber?"
"The newly refurbished chamber." The king answered.
"Wait, which one are you talking about?" The guard questioned
"The one that used to be the bad chamber, until the recent refurbishing, that is. Of course, we've been calling it the new chamber, but we really should number them." The king rambled on as the four of us got led out of the room. "Uh, take them to the refurbished chamber that was bad!"
A wall got eathbended down in front of us and we got shoved inside. The wall got bent up again, trapping us inside. We looked around the room and I was confused.
"This is the prison cell? But it's so nice." I commented. The room has four green beds in the center with three green drapes hanging from the ceiling above our heads.
Momo hopped down from Aang's shoulder and onto a bed.
"He did say it was newly refurbished." Aang pointed out.
"Nice or not. We're prisoners!" Sokka told us.
Aang's face turned to a worried one. "I wonder what these challenges are gonna be."
I rubbed Aangs' shoulder to comfort him.
"We're not sticking around to find out. There's got to be some way out of here." Katara wondered determined.
Suddenly Aang pointed toward a hole in the wall. "The air vents!"
I turned to Aang with a questioning look. "If you we're going to fit through there, you're crazier than that king."
"We can't, but Momo can!" Aang expressed pointing to a lazy Momo who was licking an apple.
Aang went up to the lemur. "Momo, I need you to find App and bust us outta here!"
Momo gave his owner a surprised expressing, chittering softly. Aang pushed Momo through the hole. but the lemur wouldn't fit.
"Go on, boy, get Appa!" Aang encouraged attempting to shove the lemur inside.
Aang gives up and slouches his shoulders.
I sat down on a bed, running my fingers through my ponytail. I took my hair out of my ponytail and let it flow down to my lower back.
"Eh, how was Appa suppose to save us anyway?" Sokka questioned, relaxing on a bed.
"Appa's a ten-ton flying bison; I think he could figure something out," Aang assured us.
I climbed into my bed and rested my head on the pillow. These beds aren't to bed.
"Well, no point in arguing about it now. Get some rest, Aang. Looks like you'll need it for tomorrow." Katara suggested, climbing into her bed.
----
Later that night, I was woken up and taken out of the cell, along with my siblings.
I struggled in the guards' grip but gave up knowing it was useless.
I glanced at my siblings who were confused. This must be part of the challenges Aang has to do.
Suddenly, a wall opened to reveal Aang and the king bickering. The guards held my siblings and me in a firm grip, making sure we couldn't leave.
Aang glanced at us and turned to the king with an angry expression.
"-so I will give your friends some special souvenirs. Those rings are made of pure jennamite." I heard the king say. The guard slides a purple ring over my finger, along with the others. I tried my hardest to get it off, but it wouldn't budge. "Also, know as creeping crystal. It's a crystal that grows remarkably fast. By nightfall, your friends will be completely covered in it. Terrible thing, really. I can stop it, but only if you cooperate."
The ring grew to my knuckle making me whine. "Ahh, it's already creeping!"
Aang glanced at us before responding. "I'll do what you want."
The king grinned at his answer.
----
Katara, Sokka, the king, and I were on top of a balcony that was inside a cave that had a waterfall. Aang stands on a flat rock with the waterfall in front of him. The waterfall had a ladder inside with a rope above it.
The jennamite ring had already grew passed out wrist. I was scared but had faith Aang can do this. He's a brave and wise kid.
The king laughed. "It seems I've lost my lunch box key and I'm hungry. Ooh, there it is!" He pointed to a hanging key inside the waterfall. "Would you mind fetching it for me?"
Aang airbends to the base of the waterfall and plunges into it. Aang climbs up the rock and grabs that ladder, but Aang struggled with climbing it.
"Ooh, climbing the ladder. No, one's ever done that before." Bumi sarcastically commented, making me glare at him.
Suddenly the torrent of the waterfall pushes Aang out of the water. Luckily Aang stopped himself in between two stalagmites. I sighed with relief, smiling. Aang leaps up to the stalactites above him and thought for a second before diving into the waterfall. To his dismay, the waterfall pushed him down and carries him out of it. Aang's body got smacked against a stalagmite.
"That's right. Keep diving head in. I'm sure it'll work eventually." The king encouraged Aang with sarcasm.
This king is getting on my last nerve. If I could, I would push him off the edge.
Suddenly, Aang cuts a stalagmite and threw it towards the waterfall like a spear. Aang used his airbending to accelerate it. The stone spear cuts the chain with the key on it and carries it out of the fall. The spear impales the stone wall above our heads. The key no dangled in front of the Kings' face.
The king gazed up at it. I smiled but jumped when I noticed that the jennamite had grown to my shoulder.
"There! Enjoy your lunch! I want my friends back now!" Aang ordered, furious.
"Ah, not yet. I need help with another matter. It seems I've lost my pet, Flopsie."
I groaned as we stood in a new area. The area was a large, sunken enclosure, with the king, my siblings and me standing on the side above it. A lop-eared bunny sat there on a rock with Aang landing behind it.
"Okay! Found him!" Aang called out.
"Bring him to me. Daddy wants a kiss from Flopsie!" The king ordered.
"Come here, Flopsie." Aang snuck up behind him, but suddenly a giant goat gorilla landed behind Aang, startling him and the bunny. The little bunny bolted off, frightened.
"What kind of pet is that?" I muttered with a scrunched up face.
The goat gorilla lunged for Aang but he flipped out of the way. He spotted Flopsie and chased after the frightened animal.
"Flopsie, wait! Flopsie!" Aang called out, chasing after it, while Aang was getting chased after by the gorilla goat thing. The king was laughing at the scene.
"Flopsie!" Aang jumped at Flopsie who ran into a small hole. Aang smashed against it, reaching inside the hole. He searched around for a second before standing up and realized something.
"Wait a minute." Aang looked at the snarling goat gorilla. "Flopsie?"
The goat gorilla stopped and Aang panicked in fear. The gorilla goat, that is Flopsie, picked him and licked him
I giggled to myself.
"Flopsie!" Aang exclaimed, petting him. The king whistled and Flopsie sprinted over to the king and laid on his back.
The king rubbed his pets' belly. "Oh, that's a good boy. Yes,, who has a soft belly."
Aang hops onto the ledge where we were. "Guys, are you okay?"
The crystals had already covered us like an oversized coat.
"Other than the crystals encasing my entire body, doing great!" Katara assured him, with a smile.
A crystal on Sokka's grew on one side making him become unbalanced and fall down.
I lifted my head up so the crystal wouldn't jab my neck. Aang noticed my discomfort and I gave him a weak smile.
Aang went over to the king with clenched fist.
"Come on, I'm ready for the next challenge," Aang demanded, placing his hands on his hips.
The next challenge was held in an earthbending arena. The king and Aang are on a balcony overlooking the arena, while my siblings and I are on an adjacent balcony with a guard. The crystals have grown more, now only our faces and feet are exposed. It was getting difficult to see anything now.
"Your final test is a duel. And as a special treat, you may choose your opponent." The king offered.
Two tough-looking men appeared from behind the king. Aang looks at them with fear. Both of them looked very tough to beat but Aang can do it. I think.
"Point and choose." The king nodded.
"So... you're saying whoever I point to, that's the person I get to fight?" Aang asked, making sure.
"Choose wisely!" The king warned.
Aang thought for a moment before making his decision. "I choose... you." Aang pointed at the king, who smirked.
"Wrong choice."
The king suddenly straightens up and takes off his outer robe to reveal a very built structure. His muscular body shocked all of us.
I guess you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
The king earthbends Aang off the balcony, making him fly into the arena. The King follows and lands in front of him, laughing.
"You thought I was a frail old man, but I'm the most powerful earthbender you'll ever see." The king informed.
Aang stood up and pointed to the balcony. "Can I fight the guy with the axe instead?"
"There are no take-backsies in my kingdom. You might need this." The king pointed up to the guard who held Aang's staff and tossed it to him.
The king bended a bunch of rocks at Aang who just avoided and evaded them.
"Typical Airbender tactic: avoid and evade. I hoped the Avatar would be less predictable." The king bended a rock into the air attacked Aang who dodged it again. He used his staff to keep him in the air. "Don't you have any surprises for me? Sooner or later you'll have to strike back!"
The king launched a rock into the air and knocked Aang down to the ground. Aang sprinted towards the king to attack, but the king made an obstacle of rocks and Aang ran into one, causing him to fall on top of the rock.
"You'll have to be a little creative than that!" The king told him.
Aang finally bended an air scooter charges forward on it. He rode across the wall and threw a blast of air at the king who deflected it with a stone barrier on both sides of it.
The king peaked his head out. "Did someone leave the windows open? It feels a little drafty in here. Are you hoping I'll catch a cold?"
The king bended an earth wave at Aang sending him across the arena. He stuck the ground sending a shockwave towards Aang who dodged it. My siblings and I gasped.
"How are you gonna get me from way over there?" The king questioned with amusement.
The battle lasted a few minutes longer until the king finally concluded it. By now, the crystal had completely covered my body and only my face is showing.
The king appeared back on the balcony using earthbending and Aang followed by using his staff.
I was relieved this was over and we can be freed.
"You've passed all my tests. Now you must answer one question." The king raised one finger in the air.
Aang glared at him "That's not fair! You said you would release my friends if I finished your tests!"
"Oh, but what's the point of tests if you don't learn anything?" The king questioned.
"Oh come on!" Sokka and I complained.
"Answer this one question and I will set your friends free. What... is my name?" He asked, making Aang bite his lip, nervously. "From the looks of your friends, I'd say you only have a few minutes."
The king leaves us alone to discuss.
"How am I suppose to know his name?" Aang asked.
"Think about the challenges. Maybe it's some kind of riddle." Katara guessed.
"I got it!" Sokka exclaimed.
"Yeah?" Aang grinned.
"He's an earthbender, right? Rocky. You know because of all the rocks." Sokka reckoned.
It was silent for a moment.
"We're going to keep trying but that is a good backup." I smiled at my brother. That basically means it won't work or get used.
"Okay. So back to the challenges. I got a key from the waterfall. I saved his pet and I had a duel." Aang told us, thinking.
"And what did you learn?" Katara asked.
"Well, everything was different then I expected," Aang admitted.
"And?" I trailed off feeling anxiety in me as the crystal grew more.
"Well, they weren't straightforward. To solve each test, I had to think differently than I usually would. I know his name." Aang confidently confirmed.
The crystals grew more and grew and by now we could barely see. Only my gold eyes were showing, while Sokka's mouth was only showing. Katara had the most space, oddly enough,
We interrupted Aang and Bumi's reunion because we had a bigger issue.
"Uh? Over here!" Katara called out.
"Little help?" Sokka asked.
"I'm too young to get to squshed by crystals!" I complained.
Bumi used his bended to break the crystals and they shattered all over the place. Bumi caught one in his hand.
"Jennamit is made of rock candy." He took a bite of it. "Delicious!"
"So, this crazy king is your old friend, Bumi?" Katara questioned.
"Who you calling old?" Bumi asked, offended. "Okay. I'm old."
"Why did you do all of this instead of just telling Aang who you were?" Sokka questioned, with curiosity.
"First of all, it's pretty fun messing with people." Bumi snorted. "But I do have a reason." He turned to the Avatar. "Aang, you have a difficult task ahead. The world has changed in the hundred years that you've been gone. It's the duty of the Avatar to restore balance to the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai. You have much to learn. You must master the four elements and confront the Fire Lord. And when you do, I hope you will think like a mad genius." Aang bowed his head. "And it looks like you're in good hands. You'll need your friends to help defeat the Fire Nation." Momo appeared on Aangs' shoulder. "And you'll need Momo, too.
"Thank you for your wisdom, but before we leave. I have a challenge for you." Aang offered.
Let's just say that the challenge consisted in many cabbages being destroyed.
