Chapter 19
"Are we all ready for the strike?" Pearl asked, her voice echoing around the small gray room. All the tier eight and nine admins were squished into the little war room. Pearl wasn't using the main meeting room because the mole would have a much better chance of overhearing their plans in the vast open space.
"Remember... tonight right after dusk... the watchers will fall once and for all!" Pearl cried. The assembled admins cheered. Grian hushed them with a swipe of his hand. The two prime admins exited the room swiftly, preparing for the battle to come.
. . .
"Hey, guys! You're back already?" Gem called cheerfully as Grian and Pearl entered the prime admin quarters.
The lady of nature was perched delicately on the large golden windowsill whispering sweetly to five potted plants and their resident bee friend. "Grow big, little ones." Grian heard Gem speak softly in the magic language. As time passed it seemed that Gem and Scar had inherited more than just physical attributes.
Both higher powers could suddenly speak galactic. Scar had volumes of ancient spells and necromancer charms memorized... spells he had never read in his life. Gem could understand plants and animals all of the sudden. Lots and lots of little things were gradually being discovered.
Grian had dueled Gem once since her transformation. He was pleasantly surprised when Gem was able to hold her own for a whopping fourteen minutes against some of Grian's most powerful magic. Grian's most powerful admin and watcher magic.
Grian still found it mildly unfair that Gem's magic moved twice the speed of admin magic and was green. For some reason, it always took him off guard when green magic or any color of magic that really shouldn't exist was aimed in his direction.
To be fair, tier three admin magic - or tier Viridis did have green magic. But level three green magic was dark green, and Gem's magic was a bright, unnatural creeper green.
"Yes, we just needed to finalize a few last details." Grian pulled his hood down and breathed in the earthy, moist yet cool scent that filled a room in the presence of the lady of nature. Like a meadow of flowers, freshly dug grass, and rain, the aura Gem radiated was beautiful.
Pearl was still getting used to more people occupying the prime quarters. She didn't mind Xisuma and False. She had known them for a while - they had actually trained together and been in the same admin classes for a few years before she was designated as a prime admin apprentice. Both of them were silent, efficient, and effective admins. Those were combinations Pearl could admire.
Scar and Gem were... another story. Pearl wasn't jealous. She just couldn't accept that they had been born into such glory. They hadn't done anything to deserve their inheritance - their mystical powers were handed to them on a silver platter.
And not only were they crazy powerful, but they had also somehow earned Xelqua's friendship. It seemed Grian had just met Scar a few days ago, and suddenly they were better friends than Pearl and Grian had ever been.
Even after so many years of self-sacrifice for the other prime, somehow Pearl was second best to the two hermits. Yes, Xisuma had invited Scar to Hermitcraft. Annoying, frivolous, and jellie-panda obsessed Scar. It was Scar out of all the capable admins - including Pearl - who got free long-lost superpowers.
"I'm going to go finalize a few things." Pearl forced a smile. Grian looked at her with a frown.
"What do we need to finalize? We finished yesterday." Grian snickered.
"I want to keep looking for the mole." At this Grian's smile faded and he gave one quick nod before stepping over to admire Gem's plants.
The flowers had once again gone rampant and were snaking their leaves and vines up Gem's arms. The lady of nature giggled as she admonished them in perfect galactic. She was just as good at galactic as Grian though she had never spoken a word in the magic language one week ago.
Pearl remembered struggling over the lilting, all-too-similar sounding notes of the ancient language with her mentor year after year. And now somehow Gem and Scar were ten times better than Pearl in the span of five days. Pearl stalked angrily to the door of her quarters, slamming it with a loud bang.
Back in the main room, Grian was confused about Pearl's behavior. She had just been fine an hour ago when they were getting ready to give their speech to the high-level admins. Grian shook her behavior off as he watched Gem interacting with her plants, mesmerised.
"Why hello there!"
"SCAR!" Grian cried as he jumped. Scar snickered. He was standing right behind Grian wearing a devious grin. Gem turned to them and put a finger to her lips.
"Quiet! My flowers are sleeping." Gem shooed them away.
"Did you finish napping, Scar?" Grian rolled his eyes.
"Oh, I was just hibernating for the longest time! You know Grian, your bed is very comfy!" Scar grinned. Scar and Xisuma were staying in Grian's main room well False and Gem had set up in Grian's second room.
It would have been more comfortable if they'd stayed with Pearl, but for some reason, Grian suspected Pearl didn't like Gem much. So instead he put them in one of his rooms, even though it was less comfortable.
"Ooh, good," Grian spoke in a sarcastic tone. Scar didn't seem to notice. "Are you ready for tonight?"
"Tonight!?" Scar gasped, "There's something happening tonight!?"
"Sc-Scar? Y-you aren't serious?" Grian gulped. Scar looked completely serious. "Um... you remember that - that little thing we talked about? You know, um, defeating the WATCHERS!?"
"Oh, ya! That thing! You know, Grian, I've been thinking... what if we started a jellie panda ranch here at headquarters! I know, I know it would take a lot of preparation and funding and such, but-"
"SCAR! Are you seriously - are you seriously only thinking about pandas right now!" Grian's voice rose.
"Oh no, no. Not just pandas - jellie pandas! You see, Grian, there's a very big difference-"
"Oh my goodness... this is the current higher power... oh no... ugh, Scar." Grian facepalmed.
"What, what!?" Scar looked completely bewildered.
"I - I, oh never mind. You can hand in your panda proposal to some comittee or another, I'm sure. Just ask Pearl." Grian put his face in his hands and turned to Gem. "Promise me you know what's going on tonight."
"Ah, don't worry I know exactly what's going on tonight." Gem smiled cheerfully.
"Why-why'd you say it like that- ugh, never mind. I need to leave." Grian flumped down on the purple couches. Was this what Pearl felt like when she was dealing with him?
. . .
The elite force of admins - and higher powers assembled somewhere in the admin territory grounds. As soon as the last ray of sunlight vanished, their leader, a tall, hooded admin with gold embroidered robes whisked a violet portal into existence.
One by one the admins vanished into its swirling depths. Finally their leader, the physical prime admin stepped through the portal. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong...
. . .
The watcher lair was completely empty as Grian stepped out into the familiar stone brick castle. Huh... that's weird. Usually, they at least have a few lookouts...
Grian gave the admins the signal to start sweeping. All the admins would spread out and 'sweep' every room. That meant silently kill, mute, or at the very least knock unconscious every watcher they came across in the watcher's sleep.
Grian would look for the head watcher where he was sure to find them - in the south tower. Grian signaled for Scar and Gem to flank him as he dashed through hallway after hallway. Grian had never seen the lair so empty... on a hunch, Grian ran down into the watcher dungeons. They were on the way anyway.
All the visible cells were full to breaking point with prisoners... but no guards were on sight. Fear clawed Grian's heart like ice. The prison guards only left their posts if...
"We have to get back to headquarters!" Grian eye pupils dilated.
"Why?" Gem's voice shook. She had never seen Grian so scared.
"We're attacking an empty base... but the base they're attacking isn't empty." When Grian's words sunk in, Gem gasped audibly and grabbed Scar's hand.
Before Grian could ask what Gem was doing Gem had pulled Scar with her through the tear in the server's code. They had already teleported to the admin headquarters. Grian needed to get the others. Somehow the watcher had known... but how!?
Grian concentrated on Pearl with all his might. And suddenly he had done it... Grian stood in his mindspace with Pearl standing across from him. They were divided by an invisible wall.
"Xelqua, what is this!?" Pearl gaped. It was impossible to transport someone to your mindspace without being in physical contact with the passenger. Just like teleportation, you had to be physically linked. But somehow Xelqua had managed to link Pearl mentally.
"No time to explain! It's a trap! The watchers have pulled back for one massive strike! You need to get everyone to the admin headquarters, they're unprotected!" Grian shouted. He couldn't hold the link any longer. Grian was pulled violently back into reality.
His heart beat faster than he could remember it ever beating... Grian twisted on the spot and in a glimmer of golden sparkles he was pulled into another world. He just hoped it wasn't too late.
