Chapter 9: Elkarez Departs
“So let me get something straight. It turns out your part of some dying race called the Delta Species, meaning that instead of you being a normal Cyndaquil, you’re also a Psychic Type, and you set out on a journey to find some big savior of your kind, which appears to be me, and to make yourself less of a target, you acted like a ditz?”
“Yup, that just about sums it up,” she replied calmly, as if I only summarized a book. Here we were, only about a mile from Uxie’s crazy maze, and already some insane stuff is going on.
I turned towards Toram, who had been silent most of the way here. “Well?” I questioned. “You gonna say something? Don’t just stand there like this is something you hear every day!” –He began to open his mouth, but I cut him off before he could say anything.-- “And don’t tell me you have some crazy past, too, like you’re actually Landorus’s son, and he sent you to Uxie so she could keep you save, but you didn’t want anyone to know about your blood, so she stuck in the maze.”
He chuckled. “No, I’ve got a pretty normal pasht, don’t worry; I jusht didn’t want to interrupt a lover’sh quarrel.”
If any substance had been in my mouth, it would have been spewed and painted across the three of us as we headed into the wind. “What?!” I questioned, before hearing Delta laugh. “And what are you laughing for.”
“You don’t seem the type to fall in love, ever. Especially not with me, since you just learned my real personality.”
“And how would I ever love that,” I muttered.
“What was that?”
“Nothing,” I snapped.
“Don’t lie to me Elkarez; you wouldn’t want me to snoop around your brain to find it, would you?”
I flinched at her response, then realized her bluff. “Psychic types can’t actually look at people’s memories. If they did, no one would hang around them.”
I can, replied a voice in my mind. Delta’s voice to be exact. I blushed at the thought of her searching every thought in my mind, but calmed myself down by telling myself not to let her get to me.
“Get out of my head,” I growled, not wanting to deal with this anymore.
“Poof, I’m out,” she replied, taken back by my sudden anger. After that we continued to walk in silence, my temper having petered out after the long moments, and soon it was simply awkward.
“Hey, there’s a town up there; should we stop for today?” They responded with murmurs of ‘sure’ and ‘why not’, but it wasn’t enough to dispel the awkward silence that hung over our heads during the walk to the village, though once we got there the bustle of the crowd was enough to feel comfortable with not talking.
Once we entered the city, I could tell that the nice row of buildings that we saw on the outside was nothing like the inside. Walls collapsed, we had to walk over rubble, and having at least one broken window seemed to be a fashion statement. It looked like a war zone, and sure enough, there were sickly red smudges in the dirt. Stealing a glance at Toram and Delta, I could tell they were thinking the same thing from Toram’s emotionless stare and Delta’s mask of pity. Though once we reached the center of the town, we were able to escape from the sights as we scampered into the in.
Inside, there was a lobby of simple layout: To the right there were chairs for guests to sit in, in the middle there were stairs up to the rooms, with the reception desk of to the left side; and on the right there was a trading counter for baked goods. As we headed to the reception, the man there, an Exploud, straightened up and pulled open his drawer of keys.
“Two rooms?” He asked, instinctively grabbing two keys to give us.
“Sure,” I responded as I grabbed the keys, but before I could turn to go up the stairs, he began speaking again.
“If I were you kids, I’d get out of here as soon as the sun rises; I wouldn’t want to be here when the Fighting Types get here.”
“Why is that?” Delta asked, sorrow and curiosity glimmering in her eyes.
“Every day they come and raid our village,” the man began, “and since they don’t have a kingdom they belong to, we can’t ask their Legendary to stop them. Whenever they come, they bring destruction, destroying buildings and such, but those cads never attack the outer ring of houses so travelers can’t see the destruction, causing them to never bother to stop by and help. And the sickest thing about them, is that we still haven’t a slightest inkling to why they raid us; they seem to just do it for fun.”
“Thank you for the explanation, and I’m sorry about what’s happening to your village.” The man just shrugged and slumped down in his chair, dismissing us. As we walked up the set of stairs, I could feel Delta’s gaze boring into my back.
“What?” I asked, turning my head towards her solemn face.
“Elkarez, we have to help these people. Their suffering for no reason, but we can fix this!” I turned back forward and scowled.
“No.”
Taken aback by my response, she was silent be for replying. “But why?”
“Don’t you realize how much time we’ve wasted already? I’ve got to get to Darkrai’s castle and kill him so I can get home. I’m leaving tomorrow, whether you’re coming or not.”
“Then goodbye, Elkarez. I’m staying here.”
