The Warmth From A True Blue Friend
The rain fell hard in New York City. Me and Leonardo had nearly gotten out of a fight with the Foot Clan alive. Everywhere they turned, there was another member. Here. There. Everywhere. It was intoxicating and the rain seemed to make it seem as though there were twice as many members than there were.
I felt myself being tugged through a hole and into an abandoned warehouse. Coming from outside I could hear the footsteps of the Foot race by each and every way. I shivered, feeling the water run over my body like icy fingers.
There were boxes and crates that gave me no warmth or light. Just dust, cobwebs, and the cold. The cruel, cruel, cold. I felt my teeth chatter and I wanted to be in front of a nice fire or inside my nice dry and warm bed, I just wanted something more than anything in the world.
I glanced up at Leo who was watching me from his spot in the shadows. I wanted to say something but I didn't want to give away their hiding spot. It could have been minutes, but if felt like hours. My head spun around and I knew if I didn't find any source of warmth soon, then I would end up getting sick for the next few days.
My best mutant friend was only messing with his fingers, contemplating in silence. I leaned my head against the wall and I was surprised by the comfortable sound of Leo's hushed voice.
"Brianna, why don't you come over here? Next to me?" He asked me. I was being shy.
"I'm fine, Leo."
"But you're cold. I can-" But I cut him off.
"Dude, you're a turtle. The last time I checked on the Internet, turtles are reptiles, which means that you're cold blooded. I appreciate your gesture, Leo, but you can't do that much for me."
Through the darkness, I could see my friend's mouth clasp shut and his eyes fond to the ground. I felt my heart sank but I knew it was for the best of me. The silence lingered in the air and it made the me feel uncomfortable.
"Are we going to be stuck in here all night, Leonardo?"
I saw the turtle nodding his head slowly. "I think so, Brianna. I know they're looking for us. And the manhole to the lair isn't anywhere near us. And plus, we can't let them locate the lair. They'll attack us."
I felt a disappointment bubble in my chest and wanted to cry, feeling a headache throb in my mind. My tears brewed over my eyelids and I rubbed my eyes, willing not to cry. But it didn't work.
"Come over here Brianna... Please?"
"I don't want to, Leo."
"Brianna, please."
"It's just not a good idea, Leo. I-I-I..."
"Brianna, come here."
I was surprised. Maybe it was the firmness in his voice. Or maybe it was my pride being drowned out from the chill that seemed to wrap around me. But I crawled over to my best turtle friend with much hesitancy.
My dark brown eyes found Leo's ocean blue eyes in the dark and he opened his arms to me, welcoming me into his embrace. I searched his face and found to my surprise a light blush on the blue leader's face. I never thought that maybe he, too, would be cold. But he wasn't just a turtle. And I keep on forgetting that he was also human.
I crawled onto Leonardo's lap and into his arms. The turtle's arms held me close to him and I was shocked to find that I was totally wrong. He was far from being cold. Oh, no. He was warm. So, very warm.
Snuggling into his embrace, I closed my soft eyes, feeling the shiver go away and the cold leaving my bones and limbs. I set aside my shyness and for the first time in a while, I was glad that I was wrong.
