Chapter 3

"Jerky, M'n'M's, Spring Onion Dip? What are we doing at Cameron's Corner? Throwing a party?" Isaac asked incredulously.

"I panicked okay?" Replied Logan from the passenger seat.

"Good thing I brought some food too." Said Isaac, signalling Logan to look in the backseat of the car with a wave of his hand.

"Apples, sandwiches, oranges?" Protested Logan as he saw the food that Isaac had collected "Stupid health food." He grumbled under his breath.

"I heard that." Said Isaac, annoyance in his tone, "Being healthy is going to keep me alive longer than you Logan."

"Whatever."

They had been like this for a while, bantering amongst themselves, trying to stay awake, it was now 5 in the morning and Logan hadn't slept a wink, Isaac not much better. They were about half an hour into their trip, which, according to Google Maps, would take 33 hours from where they started, not including rest stops.

"Left up here." Logan said over the annoying voice of Siri trying to tell them the way.

"You should get some sleep Logan." Isaac said gently. "We're on the way to the intersection and you haven't been sleeping well the past month, you must be exhausted."

"Who's going to tell you where to go?" Logan protested.

"We're on the highway now. Plus I have your phone shouting directions at me every few seconds anyway. We're not going to get lost." Isaac replied.

"Bu-"

"Go to sleep."

Logan gave in, "Fine."

He grabbed a jumper out of his bag and smushed it into a ball. He pushed it against the window and lent his head against it. Logan wriggled around in his seat, looking very much like a caterpillar, before finding a comfortable position.

Isaac heard the faint snores of Logan as he fell asleep. He stared at the way Logan's dark hair lit up every few seconds from a passing street light. Then he stared back at the road, looking at the red lights of a car in front of him, and continued driving along the highway.

"BUT I WOULD WALK 500 MILES AND I WOULD WALK 500 MORE JUST TO BE THE MAN WHO WALKED 1000 MILES TO FALL DOWN AT YOUR DOOR!" Isaac screamed at the top of his lungs, Logan shaking his head in disapproval.

"What?" Isaac asked breaking from his singing fest, "Don't you like my singing?"

"No." Logan replied with a smile.

"B-but it's beautiful." Isaac replied, a grin breaking across his face.

"It's distracting me from my driving." Logan said.

It was now noon and the boys had swapped drivers at 8, along with a breakfast of apples and coke. Which was sadly one of the healthiest things they could have had.

"Here, here." Isaac said, pointing at a local takeaway shop in the town they were currently going through. Though it could hardly be called a town, it was basically a grocery shop, the takeaway, a bakery and a park with public toilets. The whole town barely had a patch of grass in sight, the ground was all red dirt. It covered every available surface.

Logan pulled into the takeaway shop, it had a rusted sign over the front that said, Beth's. Isaac opened the door and hot, stinky air flooded the car.

"Ugh, what died out here?" He asked.

They walked through the door and saw a pudgy, middle aged woman wiping the stainless steel tables.

"I'm guessing that's Beth?" Logan  whispered to Isaac.

"What you two like?" The woman asked.

"Two of your finest burgers please ma'am." Isaac replied with a fake posh accent.

"Comin' right up." She said, going behind the counter into the kitchen as she started preparing the burgers.

Isaac pulled Logan over to a recently cleaned table. The surface was still sticky from whatever product 'Beth' had used to clean it with. The uncomfortable looking chairs were still spotted with crumbs from their previous residents.

"Nice." Remarked Isaac.

"So are you going to tell me what we are really going to Cameron's Corner for?" Asked Isaac.

"I did tell you." Replied Logan, looking around nervously.

"No, you told me to trust you. That's not the same." Isaac said.

"It sorta is?" Logan said it more like a question.

"I want to know." Drilled Isaac.

"Burgers." Said Beth, appearing out of nowhere and holding out a red tray with two burgers on it. Logan gave a little jump and Isaac nearly burst from his place.

"Thanks." Logan said, giving a little chuckle at Isaac's reaction to the woman appearing.

Beth left again, leaving the boys to their thoughts.

"So... you were going to tell me what we are going to Cameron's Creek for." Isaac prompted.

"No. I'm pretty sure I wasn't." Logan replied. He was too scared to tell even his best friend the truth. His fear kept him back. A totally irrational fear that sprang from the depths of his mind. But fear all the same.

"Please? I ditched school, I stole my parent's minivan and my mum is probably worried sick. And you couldn't be bothered to tell me what I did all that for?" Isaac said, pouring out his feelings to Logan.

Logan knew he didn't get it. Isaac didn't get that it wasn't because he couldn't be bothered or that he was keeping the information hidden for attention, he just couldn't physically tell Isaac, he was too scared.

Logan struggled with himself in his mind, he wanted to tell Isaac so badly, but he just couldn't. Logan stared at his burger intently, as though it would tell him what to do. Finally, he managed to struggle out, against all his better judgment,

"The Warlock Theory." Logan's voice was small and tiny.

"I kind of figured that but what exactly are we looking for?" Isaac replied, frustrated.

"The Warlock Theory." Logan tried again.

"Oh." Isaac replied, furrowing his eyebrows as he tried to figure out what Logan meant. He searched his mind for what Logan might mean. Warlocks? Like little magic dudes? Magic? Then it dawned on him.

Logan was looking for Magic Powers.
