Chapter I - Me Likey

설렌다 Me likey

I let out a loud scream and kicked the man in front of me, who tried to take my food basket. I could tell that he was a soldier by the way he looked. A confederate soldier, with brown hair and piercing blue eyes. His dark complexion made his 6'2" body seem even taller. He seemed to be around the age of 19, and he was hard as rock when I kicked at him.

I could see the surprise in his face at the abnormality of a woman, kicking a soldier. I danced away from him, my shoeless feet kicking up the red dust that swirled all around the tall, broken city.

I could still hear artillery shells smashing into buildings, the ground, and anything it could find. I pulled the basket tighter towards me and stared at the man. His eyes seemed sympathetic, kind. The man shuffled from his right foot to his left and watched me. His cheeks colored slightly as he flushed.

"I'm sorry miss. I just- I was really hungry but that's no excuse to try to steal from you," the soldier said and flushed again.

I pulled a curl of hair away from my face and stood mutely. He shook his head and glanced up the dusty street. In hearing a screech close to me, I hurried back onto the sidewalk, pulling the man with me. The ball slammed into the ground with so much force I fell to the ground.

I blinked the dust away and pushed myself back up and held my hand out to the soldier. Surprise was evident on his face once again, but he took it and I hauled him up. Letting go, I stared around at the fallen food on the ground and gave a sad look. My grandmother had made it all for me. Now it had been wasted.

A hand on my arm stopped me from stooping to pick them up. The soldier gave a gentle smile. "I'm so sorry miss," he said. "About the food." I shrugged and decided maybe I should just leave the food there for others who were starving in this town. His hand moved to my elbow and he guided me down Jackson Street and I allowed it. He was friendly enough and the trust I felt for him was almost clearly visible.

"What's your name miss?" the soldier suddenly asked. A sugar sweet smile graced my features, the corner of my mouth tugging upwards. "They call me Livia. And yours?" I heard him chuckle. "Guess it's no use to know what my name is miss, but since your beauty caught my eyes I might as well tell you."

I laughed, a blush coloring my face. He gave a pleased smile. "I'm Thomas," he tells me. We reached the end of the street and he took a left onto Base Street. It was abandoned more than any other street making me halt.

Thomas tugged my arm, so I had to keep pace with him. "Why are you bringing me here? I asked suspiciously. Thomas replies, "I'm repaying you." I stopped and pulled my arm from his. "Repay?" He sighed and turned to me.
