With Eyes Wide Open

Lea's POV

Wake up...

Wake up...

A voice, I wasn't sure whose, was whispering to me. Who the hell was that and why was she whispering?

"Visiting hours are over."

"Really? Okay."

Yes, leave. Whoever that was, was annoying as hell. I was trying to sleep here!

The darkness that had been fading from my eyes clouded over me again and I disappeared. Where I went, I had no idea. I just knew that something was wrong. Something was definitely wrong. I shouldn't be here.

But it was peaceful nonetheless. This was the most comfortable sleep I've ever had. No one trying to get me out of bed, no sun, no anything. Just blackness. Maybe I should be a little concerned but it was too much bliss to worry about anything.

"Hey there, little lady."

Who the hell was that now?

"You look a little hungry over there." There was a chuckle. "Here you go. Your breakfast for the day. You know they say that this is the most important meal of the day but I guess, in your state you won't be going out for any dumplings, am I right?"

My state? What was this lady talking about?

She sighed. "You poor thing. I knew this would happen to you. Well, not specifically this - I mean - how is this even possible."

I opened my eyes. It felt weird, having all that light in my eyes suddenly. It felt as if I hadn't been in the light for years. But that couldn't be right.

My eyes slowly opened up more until I was able to see who was speaking. It was a nurse with a needle and she was injecting some sort of liquid into a tube to my left. She was unaware of the fact that I was looking at her.

"You are one special case, I'll tell you that," she rambled on. "That weird looking cat you have hanging around you all the time. Your weird power. Now this. I'm not completely sure what's up with you but I sure am glad I'm not you."

She finally finished injecting whatever it was she was injecting. She placed the empty injection tube on the end table beside me and turned to my bed. She began tucking the sheets in around me, still completely unaware that I was staring at her.

"I remember the first time we spoke. I had been trying to warn about that Uchiha boy and all those girls he had chasing after him. A boy with a face like that won't stay faithful, no siree. You didn't listen to me though and look where it got you. You're lying unconscious in a bed and that Uchiha boy just upped and left the village, leaving all those girls behind. He has all his friends out looking for him! Tsk tsk, what an unruly little boy that one."

She continued tucking away, rambling on and on about this Uchiha kid. My eyes never left her face. Soon, she made her way up to my neck and she pulled the sheet up and around to secure it properly. Her eyes caught mine, shifted away absentmindedly then froze.

Slowly, they found their way back to my face. Her eyes widened in horror and she staggered back from the bed. I just watched her.

"You ... you're awake ..." Her voice was soft and filled with shock. A trembling hand made its way to her lips. "You're finally ..."

She never did get to finish that sentence. It looked as if it had finally hit her then and there and she dashed out of the room like a madman was on her heels.

Took her long enough to leave. She had been seriously messing with my sleep.

I closed my eyes again, then opened them. Where in the hell was I?

I've never seen any room like this before. There was a door to my left where the nurse had ran out and, judging from the fact that it had indeed been a nurse, I was probably in a hospital room. Who knew hospital rooms could get as high tech as this?

Computers and gadgets covered an entire wall. There were wires hooked up to them and to a massive screen in front of me. Displayed on it was a whole bunch of things I couldn't understand.

There were a bunch of things sticking out of my body too. Tubes were sticking out of my arms, legs, my temple, my neck and my stomach and they were hooked up to bags of fluid surrounding my bed, which was situated in the very centre of the room by the way. It felt as if I had just stepped into a scientific lab.

I tried turning my head to the side but it wouldn't move. No matter how hard I tried my head remained rooted in one place. What was wrong with me? Why can't I move?

And why was I here?

The nurse came rushing back in, cutting my thoughts off short, followed by a bunch of other persons. One was a lady with massive boobs, and blond hair held in pig tails. She led the pack.

Behind her were these two old persons, a man and a woman, with wrinkled, liver spotted faces that had a superior look on them. They walked behind her.

Then there was another old man but his face was covered by a wide berth hat and every step he took, he made annoying tap tapping sounds with his shoes that grated on my nerves.

The last person that came in with the nurse was a younger man, with silver hair that stood straight up and a mask that covered most his face.

They all rushed into the room and stopped still, staring at me with their mouths open and their eyes wide.

"Oh Jesus," the old lady said, holding her hand to her chest. "I can't believe it..."

"I didn't think it possible," the other one said, the man. He staggered forward, his eyes never leaving my face. I stared at him. "She's ..."

"She's alive!" This one was the woman with the blond hair. She was rather pretty with her nice eyes and that diamond in her forehead. She walked forward on what looked to be unsteady feet and stood beside my bed. Slowly she reached her hand out and touched my face. As soon as she made contact, she withdrew her hand as if she had been burnt. "She's warm..."

"Lea." My eyes shifted over to the handsome silver haired man that had spoken. The only eye showing was wide. "Do you ... remember anything? Can you move?"

"How is this even possible?" the old man with the hat said. "You died. I watched you die with my own two eyes. I carried you back dead! How are you alive?"

"It's a miracle!" the old lady said.

"Lea. Do you remember anything at all?" the blond lady asked me.

I just looked at her.

She frowned. "Lea?"

I opened my mouth but all that came out was a dry, raspy sound. The blond hair lady grabbed a pitcher of water from the end table and poured it into a cup, holding it to my lips. I drank hungrily. It felt as if I haven't had a sip of water for days.

When she removed the cup, she spoke again, "Lea?"

I looked at her again, this time a frown marring my forehead. "Who's Lea?"

Kakashi's POV

Everything became silent. We all stared at Lea with our eyes wide and our jaws on the floor.

"You mean ..." Horo started. "You don't remember anything?"

Lea's red eyes shifted over to the old man. I remember those eyes like it was yesterday. Those same eyes that had come forward on that day when they fought for the bells. Those dead eyes that showed no emotions. I had almost forgotten them because of the change Lea had went through since then but now those eyes were staring into her old teacher as if she was staring at a blank wall.

Lea didn't answer him. She just stared.

"It must be because of what happened to her," Homura, the male council elder said. "We can't expect her to have come back to life and there not be any side effects to it."

"You're right," Koharu, the female council elder said in agreement. "What she did shouldn't even be possible. That defies all laws of nature!"

"The laws of nature can always be defied when science is involved," Lady Tsunade said. She walked away from us, facing the window in thought.

"What are you saying?" I asked. "You think someone was behind her coming back to life?"

She turned to me. "You think she just upped and came back to life on her own?"

I looked back at Lea, who was staring at us with a face so dead and emotionless I felt a little sad. "We don't know what she's capable of," I muttered.

"Tsunade's right," Horo said. "When science is involved, the laws of nature can always be defied. If someone is behind this then we can't be too relaxed."

"That's true," Koharu said. "They might always show up to collect their little project." The old lady looked at Lea through new eyes. Lea just stared back at her.

"What are we going to do with her?" I asked. "We can't let her go out like this."

Horo walked up to Lea's bed. Lea's head didn't turn. Her eyes just shifted over as he approached. "Lea," he said. "Do you not remember anything at all?"

There was a little pause as we waited for Lea to answer. She continued to stare at Horo, blinking slowly, then she said, "No."

Horo hung his head and sighed. "This isn't good at all."

"I think we should keep her in here until we find out what brought her back to life," Homura suggested.

"How do you propose we do that?" Lady Tsunade demanded. "Cut her open?"

Homura shrugged. "Whatever works."

The Hokage made a sound of disgust. "You're heartless."

"Oh? And what do you propose we do then, Hokage?" Koharu asked. Obviously she was on board with the cutting her open idea.

"I don't know yet! I'm still thinking!"

"Well, take all the time you need, Hokage," I said, watching Lea as her eyes shifted from person to person, her head not moving at all. In fact, she hadn't move any part of her body at all since we came in. "She's not going anywhere"

I walked over to her bed. "Lea, can you move?"

She blinked at me, a slow blink. "No."

"You're immobilized?" Horo asked. Lea didn't say anything else but she didn't have to.

Lady Tsunade was by her side in a second. "Are you sure? Try lifting your head."

Lea closed her eyes slowly. Then a tiny frown appeared on her forehead. After a while she opened her eyes again.

"Still no?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"I can't move."

"That makes me wonder what else is wrong with her," Homura said in thought.

"This might be solved medically," Lady Tsunade said, straightening and heading for the door. "If I can find a way to heal Lee, then I can find a way to heal Lea. There must be something in the books."

She stopped at the door and turned around, looking at Lea. She shook her head. "I still can't believe it." Then she left.

"Homura, Horo, may I speak to you two in private please?" Koharu said.

"Whatever for?" Horo asked.

"Regarding this ... incident. Just meet me outside." With that she turned and left, Homura following behind her. Horo walked up to Lea and looked at her a while longer then turned and left.

I didn't feel offended that I had been left behind. I was glad for it. I had been waiting - hoping - for this moment since I had alerted Lady Tsunade that she had a pulse. They hadn't believed me ... until they went and checked for themselves.

I dismissed the nurse that was hovering in the corner with a flick of my wrist. Lea stared at me.

"You really don't remember anything?" I asked, pulling a chair up.

"No."

"And you really can't move?"

"No."

I sighed. "This is quite a predicament."

There was a short pause. Then Lea said, "I died?"

"Yeah you did. But then you came back to life."

"Is that possible?"

"We don't know. That's what we're going to find out. Shouldn't be."

Her eyes roamed the room. "Where am I?"

"A special underground room in the hospital. This is a special room for ... special cases. Coming back from the dead qualifies for a special case."

"Then ... who are you?"

"I'm your sensei. Kakashi."

Her eyes faced the ceiling again.

"Lea? Are you okay?"

She didn't answer. I watched as her eyes rolled into the back of her head a split second before her eyelids closed. Then her hand jerked.

I sprang out of my seat. Oh no.

The large screen in front of us started flashing red signals and making loud beeping sounds just as the jerking in her hand spread up her arm and over her body.

When the nurse rushed back in, Lea's body was jerking and moving wildly all over the bed. The nurse popped an injection out of her pocket and injected some liquid into the tube connected to Lea's arm. After a few seconds the jerking stopped. Both the nurse and I sighed in relief.

"I guess her waking up doesn't stop the seizures, does it?" I said to the nurse.

"I guess not. I never thought it would happen."

"That she would wake up?"

"Yeah, that. I just ... didn't." She sighed again and put the injection back into her pocket. "I injected morphine into her blood stream. That should keep her calm. She won't wake for now, so it's best you leave."

I nodded. "All right. I'll come back later to check on her."

I looked back down on my student again. Everything was going wrong. Sasuke is gone, Naruto is out risking his life to get him back, Sakura is walking around looking as if the world is ending, and Lea is back from the dead with a bunch on side effects to make things difficult.

I sighed.

Memory loss, paralysis and seizures.

The life of a ninja looks like a distant dream for Lea now.

Dedicated to my first fan :) Thank you for all your support! Loving it!
