Chapter 8: Ruthless

You feel like you've been going on forever, yet it's probably been only minutes. The few walkers that noticed you leaving in the prison trail behind you. You and Dean decided to head into the forest side in hopes that not many would follow. It was a wise choice, but your legs are starting to burn. You glance back at Dean, his bleeding has considerably stopped. Nevertheless, you still need to find a safe place to check out his wound. The only good thing right now is that Judith isn't crying.

One of the walkers following gets too close, you stab him on the head and continue running. Dean raises his gun and shoots another. It takes the three of you a few more minutes to distance yourselves from the mess and finish off the remaining walkers that followed. Even still, you keep going, albeit slower.

As you trek among the trees, you have time to think about what just happened. You don't remember seeing anyone leaving the prison, for all you know they might've died. However, the bus did take off and someone you know could've made it there after you left. Besides, you know your people, they're tough and at least half of them had to make it out. You just know it. It's like back at the Greene's farm when the walkers overrun it. You had run away with Daryl then, and a few hours later you had found them at the highway, where you lost Sofia. Finding them now is gonna be harder, but not impossible. You have to remain positive, at least a little. Especially now that you finally confessed your feelings for Sam. Like hell you're going to let all of that go down the drain. You refuse to lose another one of your lovers. Even so, as much as you want to take off and look for your family right now, that's probably not a good idea. You're tired, Dean needs his injury check, and it's mid-afternoon. You need to find a place to stay the night and feed Judith. Maybe even something to eat for you and Dean, too.

"Hey," Dean calls. " You know we'll find them, right?" He's the one shot, and yet he's trying to make you feel better. What a sweetheart. "When we part ways, Sam and I always find each other," he explains. "It's what family does. That's how I know we'll find all of 'em." He pauses, "because we're family."

Dean's words make your breath hitch momentarily. You've never before realized how close the brothers had gotten to the rest of your group. Looking back at it, you remember now. The friendly banter between Dean and Sasha, Sam and Carl discussing comics, Dean and Daryl bonding over hunting and cars, Sam and Maggie bickering to make Beth laugh... and so much more. You acknowledge it now, the Winchesters are not only your friends now, but part of your family. The thought makes you happy because now they're not alone. Not anymore, not if you can help it. Your resolution to find everyone strengthens. Besides, right now you're not alone, you have Dean and Judith, you have family.

"Dean Winchester," the man looks at you at your use of his full name, "you, mister, are an absolute sweetheart." He's incredibly surprised by your compliment, considering his cocky attitude. You don't let him dwell on it too much, "we have to patch that shoulder first. Then we'll decide what to do."

It takes you ten more minutes walking to locate a relatively safe place. It's an open clearing with a river nearby. The water is clean, so you use it to wash Dean's wound. Luckily for you, the bullet went in and out, so you don't need to extract any fragments. The bad news is that you don't have anything to close it with, the best you can do is bandage it for now. You take one of Judith's baby flannels out of her bag and rip it to dress Dean's shoulder. He complains about it, but it's the cleanest cloth you have.

When you finish, just as in cue, Judith starts fussing in Dean's arms. You know your sister well enough to know that she's hungry. You fumble on her bag, your hand catching the small formula can, and the water bottle stored there. Quickly, you prepare her meal before she can start crying and attract walkers. You feed her while Dean stands watch.

Once you finish, he takes her from your arms. You throw a puzzled look at him. "You look tired, let me carry her for a while." He is right, as much as you want to argue, you barely just woke up from your disease-induced sleep. It's been a long day. You nod and pass him over the harness.

Afterward, you and Dean agree to find a place to stay the night and maybe find supplies. Judith's bag contains only baby items, like a can of formula and some diapers. Nevertheless, you still need more water and food. Not to mention, the only weapons that you have are your two pistols (one empty and the other with silver bullets), three of your throwing knives (you lost the others in the fight), your long knife, Dean's gun (with three bullets) and Dean's demon-killing knife. It's not as bad as it could've been, but your shortage of bullets is frightening. Putting off searching for your family is not the easiest decision. Nevertheless, it's for the best, as Dean and you need to recuperate. You are hoping to find something to take care of his gunshot. It could get infected, and you don't want to deal with that.

You take a few more minutes as a break. Then head in the direction of the nearest town. The walk is quiet, as you both are in your minds. Judith has fallen asleep. You haven't encountered any walkers yet. You think about how everything has escalated so rapidly since the disease. None of you had expected The Governor to come back with a full army. So many emotions were involved in the last days. First, you lost nearly all D block to the walkers' attack, then that same event prompted a lot of you to fall sick, you nearly died. Shortly after you woke up, Sam confessed his feelings for you, and you kissed. The happiness surrounding that event ended when The Governor arrived. He killed Hershel right before your eyes, and then hell broke loose. You are physically and mentally exhausted.

It takes an hour for you to find somewhere to stay. In the distance, you can see a medium-sized building. It has high walls and a garden. The sign says it's an elementary school. It's over the road, and you think that perhaps a few miles ahead you might encounter a suburb of some kind. You briefly consider to keep on walking to find a house. You look back at Dean and notice he has started to slow down his pace, then you glance at the school. It seems relatively clear of walkers, just some wandering around. Perhaps there are more inside, but considering that so far it's been a ghost town, you doubt it. Dean looks ready to fall on his face any minute now, you don't think he can hold a few miles. Neither can you.

You clear your throat and point to the school, "let's check that out." Dean agrees without complaint. You kill the walkers in your way as you go. Once you arrive at the door, you knock loudly and wait. There aren't any sounds from the inside, but that doesn't mean it's empty. You pull out your gun and Dean follows suit. You open the door ready to shoot.

The school is smaller than you thought, it's only one floor, most of it's clear. You find some child-walkers in one of the classrooms and your heart breaks a little. They force you to remember Mika, Lizzie, and the other kids from the prison. You wonder if they made it out alive. On the other hand, taking care of those walkers is physically easy, albeit not mentally. There's an infirmary where you find a hidden first aid kit but no alcohol. In the principal's office, you find some booze that'll make up for it. During that whole ordeal, you and Dean don't part ways, too afraid to lose each other again. Even if it'd been faster to split.

You decide to stay the night there. You barricade the entrance door with furniture. One of the classrooms closer to the back door becomes your room for the night. You barricade that one too. You take one of Judith's baby blankets and lay her there. She remains sleeping. Then, you ask Dean to take off his shirt in order to cure his wound. You clean it with the booze and sew it. He doesn't protest at all, and that makes you realize how tired he actually is. The night has not yet dropped, but both of you fall asleep shortly after. You'll worry about food and water tomorrow.

You wake up the next day to baby babbling. Judith is perched on Dean's lap, playing with an empty jar of baby food. You realize she must've eaten already. Dean is looking at her as though he understands what she's saying. His soft gaze makes you smile for the first time since the prison's fall. It's nice to see your family happy. Despite Dean not spending too much time with Judith back at the prison, she likes him well enough.

"Well," you murmur, alerting Dean of your consciousness, "I never took you for a baby person, De."

He pulls a face, but you notice the light blush on his cheeks. He's embarrassed you caught him like that. "Shut up, Grimes." His response only makes you smile wider.

Deciding not to taunt him anymore, you stare out the window. The sky is a light blue color. You must've slept more than you should've. Again. "How long have I been out?" You ask.

"Long enough," he answers. "Don't worry, I swept the school and fed Lil Ass Kicker here." You feel guilty for letting him do all that while you snoozed. Before you can dwell on it too much, he continues, "I found some candy bars and a bit of water. Looks like this place has been scavenged already."

Yesterday you were both too tired to search the place thoroughly. You couldn't find anything more than the necessary to treat Dean's wound. Looks like there was little to obtain, anyway. You sit and Dean gives you a stale chocolate bar and half a water bottle. You're so hungry, you finish it quickly. You drink a quarter of the bottle and store the rest in Judith's bag. Dean tells you he already gave her some, but you worry of what could happen if you don't find more soon. Judith makes a sound of discomfort that you know well, and Dean rapidly passes the baby to you. You snort at him but change her diaper.

Dean brings over two school bags he found and gives you one. The Spider-Man logo greets you, and you beam at him. "You remember!" you nearly scream. Dean merely rolls his eyes at you, yet you see him smirk at his Batman bag. Around a week ago, you were having a conversation with Carl about superheroes when Dean and Sam interrupted. Carl and you were team Spider-Man, and the Winchesters claimed that Batman was better. The argument was dumb, but it made Carl smile.

You place the little you have in your bags. Then, you speak again, "do you know some sort of spell to find them?"

Dean thinks it over for a minute. "There are some tracking spells, though most of them require things that we don't have."

Your shoulders slouch. "So, we'll find them the old way, then." Dean nods sadly.

First, Dean and you agree that the best course of action now is to find food. That way you'll know your surroundings and then decide where to go from there. You offer for Dean to stay here, recuperate and wait for you, but he instantly refuses. He says he's better. Just like you thought, he doesn't want to get separated again, to be alone, so you don't insist much longer. You take your bags, strap Judith on your front, and hand Dean your sister's diaper bag. He eyes it cautiously. "I'm carrying the baby, you get the bag." He holds it with a grimace. When you exit the school behind him, it takes all of you not to laugh at the look of Dean with a baby bag and a Batman backpack.

The walk is not as hard as yesterday, since you've regained some energy. You go to a country restaurant, where you don't find anything at all. You continue your search. From what you can tell, there's a forest, some suburbs up front and a highway to the east. Thankfully, you remember where you are from past runs. The prison is in the depth of the forest and there's a railroad on the other side of town. Following the highway could be dangerous, that's what people usually take to guide themselves, and you really don't want to encounter any unknown person right now. The forest isn't a good idea either. It tends to be tricky if walkers decide to sneak up on you. The best decision is probably to follow the railroad, but that's problematic too, it's too open.

"We could follow the railroad from inside the forest," comments Dean when you ask his opinion. His idea is not bad, so you decide to do that. First, however, you need to find something to eat in the suburbs' area.

"... sitting in my tin can, far above the world, planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do..." Dean is singing quietly beside you. Judith is awake and hearing the melody. Once the song stops, she giggles excitedly. She started crying out of nowhere a few miles back, and that's when Dean decided to introduce her to Bowie.

"Oddly enough," you start, "that song is very fitting for our situation right now." Your companion laughs but agrees. You're about to add something else when you see a convenience store afar. Although it's worth a shot, it's very possible that it's empty.

You make your way over there. There aren't any walkers outside. You knock on the glass door and almost instantly three dead approach hungrily. Nevertheless, that quantity is no problem for you. Dean takes care of two and you of the other. He claims that you should not put yourself in too much danger because you're carrying Judith. You roll your eyes but remain silent.

The store is small, with only four aisles. Luckily, it has a small baby section where you find some diapers and a formula can. The supplies in Judith's bag could've only lasted two or so days. Therefore, you're relieved to find more. You place them in your Spider-Man bag and move on. Baby products are not that difficult to find because people don't have kids in the apocalypse. However, food and water are harder to come by. In that particular store, there's nothing on the shelves. If there's one thing you've learned about scavenging, it's that the best stuff is hidden. At the maintenance closet, you find some matches and three water bottles. Then a locked cabinet -you break the seal- with some money and a small handgun. You leave the money and take the weapon. Dean's checking behind the counters and floor, so you decide to check outside the back door.

You open it carefully in case there are walkers in the vicinity. There are none, just a dumpster and a lone corpse. You sigh. "What a pretty little thing we have here," says a voice behind your back. "Don't try anything, turn around slowly. Hands up." You do as the voice commands, and that's when you see them.

There's a woman and two men. They have their guns pointed at you. Their smiles are disgusting, and when the man on the right sees Judith, it only widens. "Look, jack pot!" he screams, and you only hope that Dean heard. "Not only do we have one fun lady for tonight, but two." Your stomach churns in repugnance, is he referring to that ?

"Listen," you start. "I don't want any trouble. Let us be on our way." You attempt to take a step back. The man on the left cocks his gun and you stop.

"Yeah-" he says, "I don't think so. We haven't had a fun pussy in a while. This one," he points at the woman with his head, "is our sister, and we're not THAT sick." The woman doesn't seem to mind the comments, she only smirks wickedly. Your heart pounds rapidly.

The man on the right interrupts. "I can see it, Ted." He's speaking to his brother. "You get the chick, I get the baby. I've always had a thing for youngsters."

Hearing them speak like that about your sister makes you see red. Yet there's little you can do with their guns aimed at you. They'll notice if you try to reach for your guns or knives. You have the small handgun you found in the back pocket of your jeans, but you doubt you'll reach it on time. If they shoot, there's a high possibility it'll hit Judith first, and you're not about to risk that. However, you'll be damn if you let this sick fuckers lay a hand on your sister.

"How about you fuck yourselves, you fucking rapists," you spit.

The men laugh at your outburst, and the woman finally speaks. "Such a pity baby daddy isn't with you. I crave for a manly dick." Well, it seems that the whole family are sick bastards.

From the corner of your eye, you see Dean signaling for you to take cover. He's by the store wall, behind the rapists. You look back at the group. They're too busy making sexual remarks. In a fast movement, you duck hug Judith and duck in back of the trash containers. The shooting starts soon after. You know that Dean only has three bullets, so you take the small handgun and peek. One of the men is down, a bullet in his chest. The woman is on the floor with a gunshot on her leg and is shooting in Dean's direction. The other man is running towards the woods. You aim at the coward and shoot twice. Lucky for you, the little thing works and the rapist falls dead to the floor. The woman notices and tries shooting your way, but her gun has run out of bullets. Dean and you exit your hiding spots. Judith is crying.

"Please, please," she begs, "I swear! They made me do things, or they'd hurt me. Please!"

You share a glance with Dean, he nods. You lower your gun. For a moment, relief overcomes her features. It all crumbles when she sees you unsheathing your long knife. You cover Judith's eyes and slice a clean cut on her throat.
