Chapter 17: Angel of the Lord

Not many people were affected by the news of Shane's demise. It's a well-known fact that no one really liked him, well, except for Judith. And that's probably because she's too young to understand the words and actions that were wrong in his behavior. Even still, the fact that she's too young is the saving grace that will allow her to get over him quickly. She still has Rick as a father figure, and she still has you and Carl as siblings. In no time, she won't have any memory of Shane, just like she doesn't remember your mother.

The most important thing that came out of the outburst of demon Shane, besides the information on the Colt, is that now everyone knows that Lucifer has potential knowledge about your location. Even those who are still a bit skeptical of the supernatural cannot help the lingering feeling that things are about to go down.

Even though everyone is on board to go look for the Colt, the walls are still not ready, and there are bound to be some people that have to stay to guard the place. The campus is too much of a potential home for you to leave just because Lucifer might be lingering outside. The Winchesters think that demon Shane was a scout, since he was on his own. So it should take some time for Lucifer to truly figure out your exact site. After the whole ruckus with the demon, your group held a meeting to discuss the next plan of action. It turns out that most of the party is going to say to finish building your home while some of you go look for the Colt. Even if no one has directly said it, they all seem to be on board to kill Lucifer. For instance, Carl was really mad when he wasn't chosen to help look for the gun. Obviously, you weren't about to take your younger brother on a dangerous mission, but he is a teenager that looks up to you and wants to stick around you as much as he can. To keep him placated, you gave him the task to look out for your sister with Beth's help.

You going with the Winchesters alone wasn't going to happen, though. True to his protective nature, Rick signed up to go with you. He claimed that you needed the extra hands and that both Daryl and Michonne could look out for the compound by themselves. Neither of them questioned it, and your boyfriend and his brother had no complaints about your father tagging along. You just guess that they didn't want to get into his bad graces. But Rick wasn't the only one to accompany you, Glenn, Maggie, and Abraham decided to come along. The latter was the most surprising one, because, if you remember correctly, he was very mistrusting of the Winchester's truth about whom jumpstarted the apocalypse. Still, you accepted him within the ranks.

The day after you faced demon Shane, you left for the location of the Colt. You wanted to reach the place as soon as possible in case the gun was moved in again. According to the information that the demon provided, the Colt wasn't in the hands of Lucifer, but in an unknown person's possession. They only knew about the place because of some tracking spells that Lucifer had placed on the gun a few months back. Apparently, the spells couldn't catch anything until a few days ago. There is a possibility that Lucifer's demons had already found the gun before you. There is no time to lose, and it's worth a shot. So, early in the morning, you boarded the impala and settled in the backseat. Your dad was driving another car with the rest of the team. You could see that the Winchesters weren't used to having more people to help them for these sorts of missions.

The scenery outside moves by rapidly from the backseat of the car. Your dad is following the impala closely behind in an old truck. You look up, and your eyes clash with Sam's through the side mirror. He smiles softly at you, and a memory of the night before flashes in your mind. Him on top of you, your toes curling in pleasure, his warm mouth in your nipples... You have to stop! Sam must know what you're thinking because he bites his lip sensually. Dear God.

It's been a few hours since you started driving, and you're halfway to your destination. Luckily for you, the Colt isn't across the country, just a state over. You think you'll reach the place before sundown, although you might have to sleep elsewhere and go back tomorrow to the campus. Traveling at night is never a good option.

"So," Dean starts from the driver's seat. Whatever he's about to say must be important because he even turns down the volume of the music. "Did you two have a nice sleep yesterday?" You don't know what he's talking about, the puzzled look on your face must be evident because he chuckles. "Oh, come on, you've been staring at each other for the whole trip. I know it when Sammy has manned up and made a move."

"Dean!" Sam's protest is loud. He groans and covers his face. Yours reddens instantly, and your eyes, which were connected to Dean's through the mirror, move elsewhere. You didn't think you were being that obvious, but apparently, you are.

"Fine, fine, whatever, I won't embarrass you any longer. Just remember to use protection. And if you can't find anything, just let me know. I'm not getting any, and I have plenty." He punches Sam's shoulder lightly, which earns him another groan on his part. You feel rooted in your seat and unable to say anything. "What? I'm too young to be an uncle." Now is your time to find behind your hands.

Dean's booming laugh at your embarrassed expressions is the only thing that holds you back from smacking him on the head. Dean is your friend, you like that he's happy, but not so much at your expense.

"Bitch."

"Jerk."

...

A few hours later, you're walking beside Glenn through the small town you're currently in. There was a blockage of cars at the highway's entrance, so you had to leave the cars and make the rest of the way on foot. Some paces in front of you, the Winchesters and your dad lead the way to where the Colt supposedly is. Maggie and Abraham are covering the rear. You honestly expected to find a town infested by demons, but everything seems to be quiet. Maybe too quiet to be true. There are some walkers lingering around, though nothing too much that you can't handle. It's honestly kind of suspicious. Even so, no one has jumped out to attack you. Maybe you really are the first ones to get here, or maybe this is all a trap, and you were too dumb to take the bait. Either way, you're too late to turn back now and decide to keep on walking towards whatever this is.

"Hey!" Glenn motions to a corpse approaching.

It's directly to your left, so, in a swift move, you take out a knife from your belt and aim it towards its head. The blade sinks in easily enough, buried to the hilt. You're the only one from your group right now that carries a long-distance weapon that is not a gun. Your father gives you an approving nod, then he keeps on walking.

The silence is deafening as you walk through the deserted streets. It almost looks like a ghost town. According to what demon Shane said, the Colt is supposed to be at the center of the town in the hands of an unknown source. Your group is armed with different kinds of monster-killing weapons because you aren't sure what you're going to find. One of your guns still holds the silver bullets, and you still carry around the knife that saved your life from Shane's attack. Besides that, you also have a necklace with a charm that prevents demons from entering your body.

Upon discovering that they aren't as gone as the brothers thought they were, everyone in your little party is carrying one now. The Winchesters didn't have enough to give to the whole group back home, so the rest had to draw the symbols with markers on their skin. It's a temporary measure, but is better than nothing. Just like the holy water that feather Gabriel managed to bless before you left. You only hope you don't have to use any of it, you're still a bit shaken up from your last encounter with the demon.

"There it is," Sam points at a small building on the other block. It's a church, and it's supposed to be right in the middle of the town. The Colt and whoever has it has to be inside.

"I don't see any demons lingering around," Dean says.

You don't see anyone either but... "They could be hiding." You agree with Abraham's comment.

"What do we do? Do we just go inside, even if it's a trap?" Glenn's hesitation isn't unfounded.

"We don't really have any other choice," you voice your thoughts. "If we wait around and they aren't already here, then we're just giving them more time to come."

Your father weights all the opinions, and even though you know the Winchesters (they probably just want to go inside without a second thought), they respect Rick well enough to hear what he has to say. "Let's just go in and see what we find."

Everyone agrees, so you march with confidence towards the church's entrance. As you make your way there, no one jumps out to attack you. Your father is the first one to approach the door. Before he opens it, he looks at your group and gives you a warning look. Everyone already had their weapons out, but now you hold onto them with more determination. He pushes the doors open and... nothing. You aim through the different parts of the church, but you can't see anyone inside. Still, you don't lower your guard as you sweep through the building.

"You shouldn't be able to get in here."

A gruff voice says from one of the adjacent rooms. Your whole group turns in that direction, guns aimed. A handsome man with blue eyes in a trench coat steps out the door. He looks tired, but there's something about him that just screams power. You're not sure if you should shoot or not, but before you can ponder the decision, Dean speaks:

"Cas?"

The man's response is immediate, "do I know you?"

There's a beat of silence before Sam chimes in, "Cas, we thought you were dead... or in heaven."

The brothers have their weapons lowered, but the rest of you don't dare to do the same. The man still has the same nonrecognition lingering in his eyes.

"Dead or in heaven?" Maggie repeats, questioning Sam's words.

Before anyone can specify, though, 'Cas' speaks again: "As I said before, I don't know who you are, why don't you tell me how you got in here."

It takes you a moment to process where you've heard that name before, but once you do, you lower your gun too. Cas as in Castiel; the angel that helped Sam and Dean before. Yes, you've heard the tales of their companionship.

"Castiel the angel?" You ask in amazement, and blue eyes focus on you.

"Angel?" Glenn murmurs but you barely hear.

"I don't know you either, and unless you tell me how you got here..." He doesn't finish his sentence. He takes a step in your direction, threateningly.

Before he can do anything, Sam moves in front of you. "Whoa whoa whoa, slow down, Cas, it's us, Sam and Dean Winchester." The names seem to spark something in the angel because he stops his progress.

"Sam and Dean? I'm sorry," he says, "as I mentioned before, I don't remember you, but I know I was supposed to wait for you to come and collect this."

From inside his trench coat, he pulls out an object. Glenn, Maggie, and Abraham, whose guns are still pointed at him, click dangerously. Castiel doesn't even seem to notice, but Dean makes a gesture with his hand for the rest to lower their weapons. They share a look, though obey reluctantly. From the inside of his clothes, he pulls out a gun. The thing is kind of old, but it looks sturdy. It doesn't take a genius to realize that's the Colt.

"You had it with you this whole time?" Dean asks. He doesn't give the angel time to respond before he starts bombarding him with more questions: "What happened to you after pestilence released the virus? We never saw you again, and then all the angels started leaving for heaven, and we thought you were among them. What the hell happened, Cas?"

"Like I told you before, I don't have my full memories from my time on Earth, I faintly remember pulling you out of hell, and some bits in between, but that's it. I just know that since the apocalypse started, I've been roaming around Earth looking for Sam and Dean Winchester to give them this." He signals to the Colt.

You believe it's a little odd that Castiel doesn't seem to remember anything from his time with the Winchesters, but stranger things had happened, and the good part of this is that the gun seems to be the real one. Maybe this isn't a trap, as you thought. You can see from the corner of your eye that your friends and your dad are slightly confused by the conversation. They know the basics of what prompted the apocalypse, but you figure they must be lost with the whole heaven and hell specifics. The knowledge of Dean's visit to the underworld was not wildly broadcasted. You feel the need to be explained further, and Dean and Sam might also need more time to catch up with Castiel, but this isn't the best place to do so.

Before anyone can start with more inquiries, you announce: "as lovely as this reunion is, we're not in the best place here, demons could still be coming." And, of course, the last thing you want is another encounter with a blacked-eyed monster.

The rest of the group and even Cas agree, so you make your way outside the church. As soon as you exit, though, your worst fears become reality. Two demons jump from the sidelines to block your path, and a third one waits for you at the front. You try to turn back around into the church, but the doors slam closed, and you cannot open them as much as you try. The demons don't take time to do small talk because they attack without hesitation. You realize that they must've been waiting outside for Castiel to come out. Dean and Sam are instantly thrown by an own unknown force to the street's asphalt. In the struggle, the demon killing knife slips out of Dean's grasp. Abraham and Glenn start shooting at one of the demons who is approaching. The other one receives bullets from your father and Maggie. You know bullets don't do much to stop a demon's advances, so, in the midst of all the fighting, and with Sam and Dean still stuck to the floor, you launch yourself for the knife. The third demon notices your movement and shoots you with a gun that you have no idea where it came from. The bullet nestles in your thigh at the same time as you grab the knife. You clench your jaw to avoid screaming from the pain of being shot. Instead, with all the strength you can muster and hoping for the best, you throw the knife at the demon's heart. You briefly realize that the creature could stop the attack with whatever psychic powers they have, but the monster must not expect you to be so fast after being shot, because they do nothing and the knife buries to the hilt into their chest. An orange light comes from within their body before it collapses to the ground. Further to your right, Castiel places a hand on another demon's head, and after some brief lightning, that one dies too. The last demon receives a cut from Dean with an odd-looking silver dagger.

With no more threats on the way, your thigh starts to burn, and you can't help but whimper in pain on the ground. Both Sam and your dad come instantly to your aid.

"All right," your father starts, "it doesn't seem to be too deep and looks like the bullet went through." He says as he takes a look at the injury. His voice is steady, but you can feel his hands shaking. You want to tell him you're all right, yet there's too much pain. You don't dare to open your mouth for fear of whimpering even more. You feel like your whole leg is burning. To be fair, this is the first time you've been shot. Sure, you've had minor injuries and cuts, but never a shot. It hurts like hell. "It's ok honey, we just need to tie it and take you to the cars. There's some first aid there."

Before he can do anything, though, Castiel steps up. "There's no need for that, I'll take care of it." You have no idea what he's talking about until he places two fingers on your forehead and the pain instantly ceases. You glance back at your thigh. It's like you weren't even shot in the first place.

"What the hell?" Abraham murmurs. "How did you do that?"

"I'm an angel of the Lord, I can heal any wound I please."

"Eh, ah, thank you, Cas." You're not sure if you should call him that or his full name because you're not friends, but considering all the things you've heard from Sam and Dean, you feel like you are. When he doesn't correct you, you take it as an ok.

"We should still go back to your cars, we don't know if there are more demons where those came from."

Shaking up from the shock of meeting an angel and seeing his abilities, everyone nods and starts heading that way. Sam helps you to your feet.

"Are you ok?" You smile in response.

He returns your gesture, and continues holding your hand all the way to the cars. Luckily for you, no other demons jump on you. You climb in the impala and sit by Cas' side with a sigh. Now, with the Colt in your hands, the fight with Lucifer seems all the more real than before. You can't stop the nagging thought that whatever happens with the Devil, someone is going to die.

A/N: I'm so happy with Cas' first appearance! At first, I wanted to include Bobby too from the spn characters, but I couldn't find a way to do it and not seem suspicious. Cas' lack of memories itself is kinda odd. I'll explain later what happened to him, though.
