Chapter 14: Impala 67
The aftermath of the event weighs heavy on everyone. Killing, even if they were monsters, has a depressing effect on the atmosphere. Carl considerably pales when he sees the bodies scattered on the church's floor, and Father Gabriel vomits directly on the carpentry. The ones who actually did the work, like Tyreese or Maggie, are in various states of discomfort. The only ones that seem to be as usual are the Winchesters, and that's probably because they're used to it. It's the way they were raised; the supernatural creatures that threaten human life aren't supposed to live. Even your father and Daryl are slightly shaken by the gory method. As for you, you've gotten rid of ghosts before and even helped on the brother's hunts. Those times you've never had to get your hands dirty. Dean had handled the witch and the ghosts were already dead. Walkers were as well. And even if you've killed before, it has never been this bloody. Therefore, it's no surprise that bashing in that man's head have you spilling your meal five minutes after.
It's comforting that you at least had time to run to one of the sides of the church. From where you are, no one can really see you unless they peek around the corner. The last thing you want right now is someone catching you vomiting what little you have on your stomach. You're not lucky enough, though, because Sam notices you going out and follows. You're spilling the last contents into the bushes when he pulls your hair out of your face. With his other hand, he runs gentle circles on your back. The caress has a soothing effect on your body, making nausea go away. Once you're finished, your boyfriend pulls you into his arms in a loving embrace. You feel so awkward right now. There's a mixture of emotions in you, first, there's the embarrassment, and then there's the gratitude.
"Dean also puked the first time he killed a ghoul," Sam comments out of the blue. The confession rips a snicker out of you.
You step back and peek at him, a smile on your face. "What about you?"
Sam hesitates, "with the ghoul? Nothing." Then, his cheeks turn slightly pink, he looks away, "well, I- ah- I nearly peed myself on my first ghost hunt."
You bite your lip to stop yourself from laughing.
"I was twelve!" Sam defends himself.
The poor attempt causes you to cough a laugh. You manage to catch it in time. Instead, you say, "I get it, ghosts are scary."
Sam can see the amusement in your eyes because he smiles, and then starts chuckling. You don't hesitate to follow along. The action makes the dimples on his cheeks appear. You ravish in the sight of them. Who would've thought you'd be laughing not even an hour after what happened. Death and monsters long forgotten now beside your boyfriend. It's such a mess, but that's just who you are. Maybe that's why you like Sam so much. He makes you forget the shitty condition of the world. Perhaps that's one of the reasons you feel this way about him. Whatever it is, you are certain that Sam Winchester makes you incredibly happy. Being with him is a decision you don't think you'd ever regret. Even if things go south, you're sure you've never had a lover like him. And you never will.
Reality hits you as soon as you and Sam make your way to the church. There's a literal bloody mess inside. The decapitation of the ghouls leaves you with two options. You can either clean everything or you can move out of there entirely. No one feels safe at the church anymore, so the wisest decision is to leave. It's very possible that those were all the ghouls from Terminus, but you also don't want to take the chance for there to be one stranded. Thus, the decision to part ways is unanimous. Because it's nighttime, Rick lets everyone know that you're leaving at dawn.
While you're packing your things for the next day, Carl finds you.
"You did well today." It's weird to have your little brother tell you that. "Listen, I know you felt wrong killing that way," Carl says, "but it was necessary." It's definitely odd to have him comfort you. Shouldn't it be the other way around? He didn't see the actual killing, thank God, though the aftermath wasn't pretty either.
"I don't feel bad... I'm just not used to it." You hesitate, "The hunts I've done before weren't like this. I know it had to be done, I don't regret it." Carl looks at you, unsure whether to believe you're alright or not. "What about you?"
Carl raises a brow, "what do you mean?"
"You- you never told me what you thought about all the supernatural stuff we said." Carl had been the only one not to be in favor or against your confession. He didn't comment anything.
At your words, he glances at you funnily, his head balanced to the side like a puppy. "I thought it was obvious. I believe you. I always have and always will, no matter what."
Something akin to tenderness blooms within your chest. Without warning, you hug Carl tightly. For the first time since he was 12, he doesn't whine.
The night goes by relatively quickly. The group takes turns on watch duty, the fourth hour it's you and Maggie. You spend the shift talking about music and food you miss. When the day comes, it's time to hit the road. Packing your bags takes no time because you barely have anything. Father Gabriel decides to accompany you. He claims that it's his duty to help the brothers in their quest about Lucifer in order to purify his soul. Whatever that means. However, some part of you, deep down, believes that he will do jack squat about it. He's too much of a coward to stand up to the Devil himself. Nevertheless, and to your surprise, your father allows it. Apparently, his mistrust towards the priest is no longer there. As for Sam and Dean, they don't really care if Gabriel wants to help.
Another decision that morning brings is Abraham's. He had been mute ever since it was proven that you weren't lying about the supernatural. Rosita has tried to talk to him, but he's been looking at the void, deep in thought... or misery. As for Eugene, he's been avoiding everyone, which only makes him seem more suspicious about his lie. When it's nearly time to leave, Abraham explodes.
"Did you or did you not lie to all of us?" He screams in Eugene's face. The man doesn't utter a word. "Goddammit! Answer me!"
Eugene is shaking as he confesses, "I'm not a scientist!" The words, even if he was waiting for them, render Abraham speechless. "I just know things. I'm smarter than most people, I'm a very good liar, and I needed to get to D.C because I believe that locale holds the strongest possibility for survival."
Rosita chimes in, "people died trying to get you there."
"I'm aware of that..."
Shane is red in the face with anger, "you wouldn't have had a problem adding us to that list, would you?"
"I- even if I can't stop the disease, I do still believe D.C. is our strongest..."
"What about what Sam and Dean said?" Maggie asks.
"I don't think there was really any concrete proof that those humans were ghouls..."
Now it's Sasha's turn to cut him off. "No concrete proof? Did you not see that monster wearing Bob's face? The speed and the strength they had?"
"You still want us to take you to D.C.?" Rick inquires.
Eugene fidgets with his hands. "Again, I'm smarter than you, now you might wanna believe in the Devil..." He doesn't get to finish his sentence because Abraham launches at him with his fist raised.
Bones connect with bones in a crushing sound. He gets two hits in before Daryl and Sam split them up. That's enough for Eugene, though, because he falls semi-unconscious to the ground. Rosita and Carol rush to his side.
And that's how ultimately Abraham decided to follow you and withdraw from his quest to D.C. Well, not so much as he decided, more like Rosita choose it and Abraham followed in a robotic-like state. Eugene tagged along for the obvious reason of not staying on his own because clearly, and despite the ghouls' attack, he still didn't believe in the supernatural. His brain couldn't phantom the possibility of the outbreak being caused by it instead of science.
"We'll meet on highway 49 then?" Your father asks for the 10th time. He's evidently nervous about splitting up.
"Yeah, we'll be there after sunset," your words offer no reassurance to his tense form.
Rick nods, "alright, stay safe."
With a parting hug to your father and siblings, you follow the Winchesters and Daryl to the left of the pathway, while the rest of the group goes to the right. They're going into town to find supplies for the journey ahead. Then they're going to the highway to try and find a car and some gasoline to make the trip easier. They don't have a lot of hope, but it is better to try than just dive headfirst without any support. Since you're abandoning the church, you have to find a better place to stay while the brothers keep looking for the Colt. Even though it's clear that the supernatural exists, no one has really said anything about helping to stop the Devil. Well, only father Gabriel, but he doesn't really count. You're in it with the Winchesters, despite that, there's a necessity to have a place to stay while looking for clues to stop the apocalypse. Somewhere like the Prison where you could always go back to if needed. Finding such security is hard, but you're willing to give it a shot upstate. Carol said she found something while she was apart from you. She mentioned that there was a potential spot where you could make it home. However, it's far away, and you need to prepare yourself for the journey. If you manage to get cars is only a few hours' drive, if not, it's a two-day trek.
Even so, you cannot leave this place, or at least not yet. When Sam left the prison after the governor's attack, he was riding the Impala. According to him, he stashed it somewhere in the woods to avoid wasting gas and attracting attention. Now you need to look for it again. In the trunk there are weapons you might need when fighting Lucifer. Dean's pretty sure that there's holy oil in there. Thus, that's why you part from your father and the rest of your family in the company of the hunters to find the car. Originally, Daryl was not coming along with you, but he insisted upon realizing that your team was smaller than the one getting the supplies. He also mentioned that he was curious to see the small arsenal on the Impala's trunk.
"Nah, man, you still cannot convince me that the chupacabra's real," Daryl says to Dean.
The monster-hunter has been recounting his past hunts while on the road to find the Impala. When you told him, Daryl said he saw the chupacabra once, he dived into one of his encounters with a said specimen.
"What are you talking about? You said you saw him!"
Daryl waves a hand dismissively in your direction. "I was bluffing, there ain't no chupacabra."
Dean chuckles, "I hate to break it to you, but the chupacabra is pretty real." Daryl shakes his head, still not listening to reason.
"It is," Sam insists, "they're not very common, but we've hunted some before."
You can only giggle in amazement at Daryl's horrified look. His head must be going overdrive to recount the encounter with the creature. If he saw the creature or not, it's another thing, but they definitely exist.
"It ain't no chupacabra," he mumbles below his breath.
Despite Daryl's assistance with the ghouls and his support in following your crazy ideas, he's still having some trouble grasping the other side of the coin. You suspect that in time he'll be more welcoming, probably after he gets used to the unnatural in his life. He'll get there, just like the rest of your group. The only one you're kinda worried about is Shane because even after everything that's happened, he still gives the Winchesters certain glances that are a mixture of mistrust and anger. He has been able to control himself, but you fear he'll explode again, just like he did when Rick and he almost killed each other back at the Greene farm.
The discussion gets interrupted by Sam pointing in a direction to the south. "There, I hid it in that barn."
" Her , Sam, her ," Dean berates, Sam just rolls his eyes.
The driver's window in the car is broken, probably signifying that someone has peeked inside to see what was worth. Some granola bars in the glove compartment are gone, beyond that, everything seems normal. You're lucky the car is still there with all the possessions in the trunk. That's probably because they're hidden in a secret compartment.
"Oh, my baby, what's happened to you?" Dean mopes.
The car is dirty, and the painting is scratched in some places near the window. However, when you turn it on, the motor roars to life instantly. At least it's still working, otherwise, you don't know what would you have done. Probably you would've taken all the guns in the trunk and left Baby behind, no matter what Dean said. Luckily, that's not going to be a problem. The only issue that you see is the low tank on the dashboard. It's still got enough to get to the highway, but not to the meeting point where you agreed to be with the rest of the group. You're gonna have to ransack some cars along the way and search for fuel.
Once you decide on the fastest route to take, Dean hops in the driver seat and Sam goes to the passenger one. The naturality in which they fit in is outstanding. It reminds you of the first time you met them; the way they could communicate wordlessly with each other during the hunt. You're close to Carl, but whatever the Winchester brothers have goes beyond that. The way they look in the Impala together almost makes you feel guilty about climbing into the back seat, like you're not sure if you belong there. Daryl must be feeling something similar because he also hesitates when Sam motions you to hop in. They look ready for one last hunt, one last battle against the Devil. Maybe, they don't need you or even the Colt to defeat him.
The drive to the highway takes approximately an hour and a half, and the gas is almost over. When you get there, looking for more turns out to be a bit of a challenge. There are a lot of cars stuck, and you are able to get a lot of unexpected supplies, but most of their fuel tanks are empty. It takes you three hours and like 50 cars to get enough to fill baby.
"We should be there in about one more hour," Dean murmurs from the driver's seat.
Now you're on your way to your meeting place outside of town. You can see that everyone is on edge about being so many hours apart from the rest of the group. The mood has been kind of tender since the Governor's attack in which everyone had to split apart. Or maybe it's just you, maybe you just want to see your father, Carl, and Judith again.
God, it's been a while since you've been away from Judith this long. It's kind of impossible not to think about your little sister as almost your own kid. You're aware that she isn't, but since your mom's passing and posteriorly your dad's crazy behavior, she kinda became your responsibility along with Carl. Now Rick takes more care of her than when she was a firstborn, but the bond that you developed in those first months is kind of impossible to forget. And even though Shane didn't go as ballistic as your dad after your mom's passing -surprisingly-, he wasn't one to clean up a dirty diaper at three in the morning. It had to be either you, or Beth and Carl when they were available. Yes, you kind of know what Dean felt like after his mother died and he had to take care of his little brother. It's not that Rick is focused on revenge or anything, but as a leader, he has a group to take care of.
Like Dean mentioned, an hour later you're pulling by the side of an old pickup truck, you see Rosita in the driver's seat. Glenn and Maggie are in the back. They wave at you as you pass by. Everyone else is already there too. You can see that they've decided to take three cars, and you kind of wonder how much gasoline they found. The first thing you do after you exit the Impala is run towards Carl and hug him. This time, he complains.
The sun is already setting on the horizon, and since you don't wanna be there by the time night falls, everyone quickly forms a trip plan. Not even five minutes later, you're ready to go. Thus, you climb back into the Impala with your sister half asleep on your lap. To your surprise, Sam sits beside you with a warm smile. Riding shotgun is Carl with an excited expression.
"What are you doing here?" You ask him. "I thought you were traveling with dad?"
Your brother shakes his head, "he let me come with Dean, so he could show me his car and good music."
You laugh out loud while Sam groans beside you. "Oh no, I am outnumbered by the classic rock lovers," he complains. "Well, I guess Judith and I will have to oppose."
Your smile only widens at his words, "I hate to break it to you, but Judith loves AC/DC."
At the confession, the car fills with laughter and Sam's fake annoyance. If everything goes well, by this time tomorrow you might have a home, and you will share it with the man you love.
