In Harms Way (PT 2)

Clementine and Sarah sat in silence as they awaited the others' return. Bill Carver, the man Luke and the rest of the group were actively trying to avoid, had paid them a visit. Though he tried putting on a disarming and charming façade, his cold, calculating eyes betrayed his true nature. When Clementine met his eyes, she could tell that he was responsible for the carnage at the riverbank...

CLEMENTINE: We need to find the others

Sarah watched incredulously as Clementine stood

SARAH: We can't go outside!

They didn't have a choice...

CLEMENTINE: Carver knows that we're here now, Sarah. We're sitting ducks, and if he comes back, then what?

Making her way into the kitchen, Clementine stopped as the back door opened. Luke, Nick, and the others walked inside. Sarah then spotted her father and rushed to hug him...

CARLOS: Sarah...

Luke turned to Clementine

LUKE: I... heard about Pete. Nick and I were gonna go, and uh, find him. Come on, let's go...

SARAH: A man was here

CARLOS: What!?

The group froze as Carlos turned his attention to Clementine...

CARLOS: A man!? What man? Clementine, I need you to tell us what he looked like

She could see the fear in each of their eyes. Their fears would soon intensify as Clementine began to describe the man's appearance. The brown fur coat he wore, his gravelly voice, his shaggy grey hair, and the way he carried himself with a dangerous air, and if all that weren't enough...

SARAH: He mentioned you, dad

The mention of the man's knowledge about Sarah's father made the tension even more palpable. Luke exchanged a concerned glance with Nick, and the others shifted uneasily. Carlos's face tightened with worry, his protective instincts for his daughter kicking into high gear...

CARLOS: His name, Clementine. Did he say what his name was?

CLEMENTINE: He...said his name was George?

Alvin's eyes widened

ALVIN: George? Are you sure that's what he said?

CLEMENTINE: That's what he said...

The man placed both hands atop his head, his mind racing. Alive tugged on the collar of his shirt, anxiety mounting...

SARAH: You're not going to hurt anyone, are you dad?

Luke then stepped forward

LUKE: Your dad is one of the nicest guys I know, which is why... he's not gonna hurt anybody (Turning to face Carlos), right Carlos?

Carlos turned away with both arms crossed

CARLOS: ...

Luke sighed before addressing the rest of the group

LUKE: Look, we all know it's Carver, alright? that part's obvious. Right now, I think it's safe to say we need to pack up and find a safer place to regroup...

CLEMENTINE: Carver... he's responsible for what happened back at the river, isn't he?

Luke frowned

LUKE: He's...

Luke stopped when he caught Rebecca's gaze. The look in the woman's eyes was a mixture of sorrowful regret

LUKE: Yeah... Yeah, that was him...

ALVIN: Honestly kid, if you're feeling like bailing, now's the time

REBECCA: (Incredulously) Alvin!

ALVIN: We're in this mess because of me, alright? She's ain't got a dog in this fight. If that asshole ends up catchin' up to us, I don't want anyone getting caught in the crossfire, especially her...

Clementine listened to Alvin's words and, for a moment, took them into serious consideration. Luke, however, didn't like the thought of Clementine being on her own to fend for herself. No matter how capable she was, everyone needed help.

LUKE: I... I don't really think it's a good idea, you goin' out there on your own again. You're a tough kid Clem, but... I mean shit... I guess it's up to you at the end of the day. So what's it gonna be?

Clementine's thoughts drifted to the months spent alone with Christa. Omid's death took a heavy toll on the woman, the woman's grief eventually causing her to shift blame of her husband's death unto the twelve-year-old's shoulders. The rift between the two had become strained, and Christa only took care of Clementine afterward due to an obligation to Lee. To make matters worse, Christa would soon lose her and Omid's child. Ever since Lee's death, Clementine had always felt as though she was alone. Now here she was, between a rock and a hard place

*Inhale*

*Exhale*

CLEMENTINE: I've come this far, right? Besides, this Carver guy already saw my face. It's probably if we stick together...

Luke smiled and nodded before taking on a more serious expression as he addressed the group

LUKE: Well then, let's not keep sitting around here waitin' for something to happen, people. We got lucky. Everyone pack up. We're movin' out

As the group started gathering their belongings and preparing to leave, Clementine felt a strange sense of belonging, having now integrated herself with this group. The feeling wouldn't last forever, though. Her thoughts drifted to her first group...

CLEMENTINE (Thoughts): Maybe... maybe this'll be different...

- Hours Later -

As Luke and the others trekked through the forest, Clementine noticed Rebecca lagging behind. She slowed her own pace until both she and Rebecca were waking near one another. Rebecca looked down at the girl and smiled...

REBECCA: Hey Clem...

CLEMENTINE: Are you... okay?

Clementine watched as the woman clutched her stomach before replying

REBECCA: I'm fine, Clementine. My feet are killing me, but I'll be fine

The two continued following the rest until Clementine decided to ask something that's been bothering her for a while...

CLEMENTINE: Why is Carver after you?

REBECCA: After me? Oh, you mean us. It's a long story. He... he just has a hard time letting go.

Letting go... a lesson Clementine was all too familiar with. Pushing her thoughts aside, Clementine's eye wondered over to the woman's stomach again...

CLEMENTINE: What's it like?

REBECCA: Hmm? Oh, you mean...

She had asked so absent-mindedly. Her curiosity had gotten the better of her. Clementine had traveled with a pregnant woman before, but with everything that happened...

REBECCA: Well, it's certainly ain't a picnic. Bringing a baby into a world like this doesn't exactly help either, but other than that, it has its moments

CLEMENTINE: Moments... like what?

Rebecca smiled

REBECCA: Well, for starters, you're never alone

Clementine smiled

CLEMENTINE: That's nice

Rebecca nodded

REBECCA: ... it's a boy

Clementine raised a brow

CLEMENTINE: How do you know that?

REBECCA: Because boys tend to take a lot of energy out of you. I used to be a nurse, you know?

CLEMENTINE: That's cool. My mom was a doctor

REBECCA: Really? What was her name?

CLEMENTINE: Diana...

Clementine's heart felt heavy in her chest. She uttered either of her parents named out loud in so long. Rebecca could see the look on Clementine's face and decided to try and change the subject

REBECCA: I'm sorry about yesterday. Yelling at you over something as dumb as snoring. I'm trying to work on it...

CLEMENTINE: It's fine, really it's no big deal

Rebecca shook her head

REBECCA: No, no, it's not okay. I've got to be better. I can't let this baby turn out like...

Rebecca paused

CLEMENTINE: Like what?

Rebecca looked forward to her husband as he kept pace with the others a couple feet ahead. Taking a deep breath, Rebecca spoke in a low tone

REBECCA: Like Carver... I just hope he doesn't turn out like Carver

Clementine's eyes widened. She turned to face the woman in shock as they continued walking. Rebecca could feel Clementine's eyes without having to look.

CLEMENTINE: (Whispering): So that's why--

REBECCA: That's why Carver is so hell-bent on catching me... he's convinced that the baby is his. It sucks, but part of me feels like he's right, and I can't bring myself to look Alvin in the eye and tell him.

Rebecca sighed, a wave of shame washing over her due to her past affair...

CLEMENTINE: I won't tell anyone...

Rebecca turned to Clementine as she continued

CLEMENTINE: Alvin seems like a really nice person. You messed up for sure, but I don't think it's the end of the world...

Her thoughts once again drifted back to Lee

CLEMENTINE: ... There was a really good man in our group once. Before everything started, he killed somebody and was on his way to prison. He could have kept it a secret for a long time, but he didn't. He valued trust more than anything. It's going to happen soon. At some point, Alvin's gonna find out, but it's up to you how he does...

- Five Days Later -

Carver scowled, balling his fist in frustration as he, Shawn, Troy, Bonnie, and Johnny stood there staring down at a single set of footprints...

CARVER: ...

TROY: Fuck. They gave us the slip...

JOHNNY: Sure feels that way. So, like, what now?

BONNIE: We've been after them for the last several days, and now this? You don't think they--

CARVER: Shut up!

Carver snapped, causing Bonnie and the others save for Shawn to jump at his sudden outburst. Collecting himself, Carver spoke in a much more focused manner

CARVER: They're... they're still alive. This here is just a minor setback. We didn't drive all the way out here for nothing. We move forward until our people are back home where they belong. Now get your asses in gear...

It was clear to everyone present that with each and every day that passed, finding Luke and his posse was becoming harder and harder. In turn, Carver's anger would grow with each and every literal and figurative roadblock they encountered. His obsession was driving him to extremes, and those who followed him could feel the tension in the air.

SHAWN: Hold on just a second!

TROY: Huh?

BONNIE/JOHNNY: ...?

Carver, who had began making his way toward his vehicle, stopped in his track before turning to face the boy who had crouched down and seemed to be inspecting the footprints further...

CARVER: What is it kid?

Shawn's eyes narrowed as he trailed his hand over the dirt...

SHAWN: We haven't lost them at all... Just come take a look for yourself

Making his way over to the boy, Carver stared down at the footprints with a mix of confusion and curiosity.

CARVER: What am I supposed to be... huh?

That's when he noticed it, something was off about the footprints, something he'd overlooked due to his frustration. He crouched down to get a closer look, his brow furrowing as he examined the marks in the earth.

SHAWN: See what I mean? The prints are... strangely uniform.

Carver's gaze followed Shawn's finger, tracing the outlines of the footprints. As he looked more carefully, he could indeed see that the prints were almost too similar, as if intentionally mimicking one another. Troy and the others approached, their curiosity piqued by the sudden change in Carver's demeanor...

TROY: What's going on, boss?

BONNIE: Did you find something?

Carver's lips tightened into a thin line as he stood up

CARVER: ... That sly sonuva bitch. These footprints, are way too deliberate...

JOHNNY: Deliberate? You mean like, someone's been makin' 'em look the same on purpose?

Shawn nodded, confirming Johnny's understanding.

SHAWN: Exactly. They're masking their numbers, making it seem like there's only one set of footprints.

TROY: This was Nick's idea...

Carver shook his head

CARVER: No, that brat just lost the only bit of family he had left. Knowing Nick, he's probably a total mess right now... no, in fact, I'm willing to bet this was Luke's idea

*WOOSH*

The cool air brushed against the group as a chilling realization settled in. Carver's mind was working fast, connecting the dots and formulating a plan...

CARVER: Troy... you've still got that map on you?

TROY: Yeah, boss. I've got it right here.

Troy pulled out a folded map from his pocket and handed it to Carver. Carver unfolded the map and spread it out on the hood of a nearby vehicle. He studied the map, his finger tracing the path of the footprints they had been following.

CARVER: (Muttering to himself) They've been leading us in circles, making us think they're headed in a straight line... so, where the hell are you taking my family now, Luke...?

He scanned every inch of the map when something caught his eye...

CARVER: Bonnie, get over here, now

Bonnie quickly stepped over to where Carver was examining the map, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the intricate lines and markings...

CARVER: If I ain't mistaken, you were born and raised here in North Carolina, right Bonnie?

Bonnie perked up and nodded

BONNIE: Yes I was... I've traveled a lot, so--

Carver then raised his hand to silence to woman before speaking

CARVER: I didn't ask for your whole life's story. If you know the area then that's good enough for me. They're headed north...

BONNIE: North? But why?

CARVER: ...

SHAWN: Because Walkers start getting slower the colder it becomes

BONNIE: I didn't know that...

There were a lot of things they weren't privy to, Carver had made it a point to keep any mention of Wellington under wraps. He'd been opposed to the idea of risking his people's safety for something he considered to be a fairy tale. Throughout the last couple of years, he'd managed to build what he considered to a safe haven for his community, and he refused to lose control of that

CARVER: Well, now you do. And that's why they're heading north. They must think that they'll have a better chance of survival up there under colder conditions. However, what I'm curious about is this...

Carver tapped his finger over a specific area on the map

BONNIE: That there's the ski-resort

CARVER: Ski-resort?

Bonnie nodded

BONNIE: Yup. Moonstar Lodge, me and a couple of my friends used go there all the time. Wide open area, lot's of trees... an amazing view too.

CARVER: And just how big and spacious is this Lodge of ours?

BONNIE: Well...

- Elsewhere -

CLEMENTINE: (Under her breath) Woah... that place looks huge...

LUKE: You see something?

REBECCA: I hope so. We've been walking for days, and I don't know if my feet can take much more of this.

Clementine glanced at Rebecca and then back at Luke. She knew that everyone was tired and worn out from their journey. The forest was dense and dangerous, and the weather had been unpredictable. They needed a safe place to rest and regroup, especially with Carver and his group on their trail...

CLEMENTINE: Yeah, across the bridge. It looks like some kind of lodge or... resort. There's a lift too

Luke pondered for a moment before replying

LUKE: A lift? Must be a ski-resort... could be good place to rest our heads

CLEMENTINE: I've never been skiing

ALVIN: Bec and I did once...

Rebecca giggled

REBECCA: I went skiing, you became a giant snowball and nearly died...

Alvin looked away and scratched his head in embarrassment as both Luke and Clementine shared a laugh at the man's expense...

LUKE: Well, let's hope it's still standing and hasn't been overrun by lurkers... or worse

ALVIN: What could be worse than lurkers?

REBECCA: Getting caught by Bill comes to mind.

Luke nodded before turning to Clementine once again

LUKE: How about the bridge Clem, does it look safe enough to cross?

From her place atop the large rock, Clementine peered through her binoculars as she studied the bridge from their current position. The bridge itself appeared to be sturdy enough, but with the unpredictable nature of post-apocalyptic structures, it was hard to make a definitive judgment.

CLEMENTINE: There are a few walkers, and It looks stable from here, but we won't know for sure until we take a closer look.

LUKE: Then that's what we'll do. Alright, c'mon down

Clementine carefully descended from the rock and rejoined the group. Luke turned to address everyone.

LUKE: Alright, listen up. We've been on the move for days, and we're all exhausted. If that ski-resort is as safe as it seems, it might be the best chance we have to rest and regroup. Me and Clementine will scope things out, clear out any lurkers we see. When I give you the signal, we'll all cross the bridge together

Nick, who had been resting against the tree and left with nothing but his own thoughts for the past several days, clutched the rifle in his hand tightly before approaching Luke and speaking

NICK: I should come too, in case anything happens then I could--

LUKE: No

NICK: No? Wha-- What do you mean... no?

LUKE: Nick, please man, don't make this an argument, alright? Rebecca's still pregnant, and we need someone here to watch over her and the others in case...

NICK: In case Carver and the others show up, yeah... I know. But if something happens over there than I'll come running...

Clementine watched the back and forth between Nick and Luke. Truth be told, with everything that's happened up until now, she was debating if Nick having a gun was a good idea. She knew first hand how dangerous an armed person could be after the death of someone they loved...

CARLOS: Well I for one think Clementine should stay

The comment drew Clementine out of her thoughts as she turned to face Carlos

CLEMENTINE/LUKE: What!?

CARLOS: You heard me. Clementine should stay here. It's too dangerous, she's...

Clementine narrowed her eyes at Carlos before speaking

CLEMENTINE: You refused to help me patch up my arm, then you lock me in a shed where I was nearly killed by a walker. I don't need your permission to do anything. I can take care of myself. You're not my dad Carlos...

Sarah looked between her father and her bestfriend as Carlos scowled, crossing his arms before replying

CARLOS: ...And you're lucky you're not my daughter

CLEMENTINE: (Under her breath) Thank God

Luke chuckled having heard Clementine's comment before addressing Carlos once more

LUKE: It'll be fine Carlos. Clementine can handle herself...

Luke turned to the girl standing at his left

LUKE: Let's go Clem

Luke turned around to begin walking towards the bridge. Clementine shot Carlos an annoyed before joining him

LUKE: Hey, uh, sorry about that. I just could really use your eyes, and right now I don't trust Nick to tie his own shoes...

Clementine raised a brow before replying

CLEMENTINE: ...But you trusted him with a gun?

Luke grimaced, though he couldn't deny that the girl was right

LUKE: Nick is... he's different. Everyone's just on edge with this whole Carver situation

CLEMENTINE: It's been five whole days...

LUKE: For you maybe. For us, it's been a couple weeks

CLEMENTINE: Weeks!?

Luke nodded as the two continued towards the bridge...

LUKE: Humor me real quick. What's the most important thing in this world? What does everyone want? Even Bandits. What do you think they're all after?

CLEMENTINE: Safety?

Luke shook his head

LUKE: Close but no... what's the one thing a guy would walk hundreds of miles to get back? Something you can't just find...

Then it hit her

CLEMENTINE: Family... it's family isn't it?

Luke nodded slowly

CLEMENTINE: Yeah... I should've known that one...

The girl's shoulders slumped. Her mind drifting back to the undead faces of her mother and father. She huffed, trying to push the unpleasant memory back into the dark corners of her mind. Clementine had been so preoccupied with the hard task of simply surviving, that she was starting to become a bit jaded...

LUKE: Don't feel too bad okay? I get it, you know? This world takes a lot away from you. It's easy to get caught up in what you lost... who, you lost... but it's important to stand back every now and again, appreciate what you have...

CLEMENTINE: ...And if you don't? What happens then? What happens if you can't let go?

LUKE: ...

CLEMENTINE: ...?

LUKE: You become just like Carver

CLEMENTINE: ...

LUKE: Heads up

Clementine watched as Luke drew his machete, motioning to a couple of Walkers that had positioned themselves at the entrance of the bridge. The girl pulled out a hammer she's tucked into the waistband of her jeans

LUKE: Alright, it's just the two of 'em

Luke then stood slowly

LUKE: (Whispering) I don't need this goin' south, so you take the one that's sitting, and I'll take the one standin

Clementine would much rather had taken the one standing, but she understood Luke's point. With a nod, she quietly approached the Walker that was sitting against a large rock in front of a bridge. Its rotting flesh made her stomach churn, but she had grown used to the sight, and the smell. She raised the hammer above her head and swung it down with a swift, precise motion...

*CRUunh!*

Clementine quickly wiped away the splatters of gore from her face and turned her attention to Luke. He had already dispatched the other Walker, his machete slicing through its neck cleanly.

LUKE: Nice work, Clem. Now let's hurry up and clear this bridge...

Clementine nodded

CLEMENTINE: Okay, just give me a second...

Her hammer had gotten stuck, tangled within a mix of the Walker's hair and flesh. She pulled and twisted, feeling a mixture of disgust and frustration. Luke approached her and gave the hammer a firm tug, freeing it from the mess...

LUKE: Here you go

CLEMENTINE: Thanks...

Paying attention to how she struggled just, now, Luke eyed the hammer in Clementine's hand with a hint of concern before speaking

LUKE: Say, kid, we both know you can defend yourself, but I'll be honest with you. That hammer is gonna get you killed. Try to be more careful with it...

Clementine then spotted the gun in Luke's holster before turning back to face him

CLEMENTINE: You could always let me use that gun of yours. I'm a good shot

Luke shook his head

LUKE: Hey look, I don't doubt it. In fact, you're not the first kid to prove me wrong as far as that's concerned, but I can't risk it. Carver's hot on our trail, our people are tired, hungry, and low on energy, plus there's no telling how many walkers there are out here. The name of the game right now is silence...

CLEMENTINE: Which is why you left Nick back there with the others

LUKE: ...Yeah.

The girl sighed before she and Luke continued onto the bridge...

- Meanwhile -

CARVER: Now the trick here is to not slam your foot on the gas, ease onto it instead...

The eleven-year-old boy nodded nervously, but tried to replicate what he'd been told verbally.

CARVER: Good, good. You're getting the hang of it, kid. Just remember, control is everything. If you control the vehicle, you control the situation.

The boy's grip on the steering wheel tightened, his knuckles turning white as he concentrated on maneuvering the car. Carver watched him closely, his eyes calculating and assessing every move. The intense focus on Shawn's face told Carver all he needed to know...

CARVER: You're nervous...

SHAWN: ...!

The man huffed before leaning back in his seat and throwing his leg up on the dashboard

CARVER: The hell are you so nervous for...?

SHAWN: Because I don't want to crash

CARVER: Then don't crash...

SHAWN: I'm trying

CARVER: Then stop trying so damn hard. It's not rocket science, the car is only ever gonna go where you tell it to

*Inhale*

*Exhale*

They'd been at this for the last half hour or so since they began making their way up north in search of Luke and the others. Initially, Shawn was excited at the prospect of learning how to drive, he was even taken aback by Carver's offer to teach him. Moments like this were few and far between, so he'd be sure to savor it...

SHAWN: I've been thinking a lot lately

Carver cracked an eye open as he looked over at the boy

CARVER: What about...?

SHAWN: ...About my dad... and my mom

CARVER: ...

SHAWN: When you asked me to drive earlier, it made me think about them. They both wanted to teach me when I got older. Mom wanted to teach me early, like right now... but dad was always against it. He wanted me wait a bit later, to make sure I was ready. Now that I'm thinking about it... he wanted me to do a lot of things

It was then that Shawn noticed how his vision became a tad bit blurry as he felt a warm sensation from his eye making it's way down the left side of his face. He wiped away the tear, along with any others before putting his focus back onto the long road ahead

SHAWN: He wanted us to find him, and we were too late. He wanted me to protect mom, and I couldn't. He wanted me to survive, and I nearly got myself killed, so many times...

Carver peered out of the window, watching the trees pass by as he attempted to come up with something to try and make the young boy feel better. Though, Carver was never the one to turn to for emotional support... that was more Rebecca's thing

Carver then sighed before speaking

CARVER: I wouldn't let it get to me...

SHAWN: Huh?

CARVER: Fathers... tend to expect a lot from their sons. so much so, that sometimes, they also tend to forget that their still human, that they're prone to making mistakes. You didn't fail your old man just because you stumbled a few times here and there. What matters is that you learned from it. I told this already squirt, but you're a survivor. Most kids couldn't make it through less than half of what you have.

SHAWN: I guess...

CARVER: ...It was smart, what you did back there with the footprints. We'd have lost them completely if it weren't for you squirt. How'd you learn that anyhow?

The young Everett went silent for a moment before replying

SHAWN: Pete taught me...

CARVER: Is that so...? Pete was a good man

Carver closed his eyes and tried getting comfortable again

CARVER (Thoughts): ...Such a waste

Five minutes, William B. Carver was able to close his eyes and relax for all of five total seconds before...

*BANG!*

The car came to a screeching halt as Shawn slammed his foot on the brakes. Grabbing hold of their respective weapons, both Carver and Shawn emerged from the vehicle, ready for anything. Troy, who'd been driving the moving truck behind them hopped out along with Bonnie and Johnny

TROY: The fuck was that!?

- Back at the Bridge -

MATTHEW: *Gurgle* You-- *Cough* W-Why-- *Gurgle*

Both Clementine and Luke watched in a mixture shock and horror as Matthew stumbled back, having taken a bullet straight to the throat, courtesy of Nick. Raising his rifle in a feeble attempt to kill the man who had killed him, the last bit of life Matthew had left slipped away as he collapsed off the bridge. His body smashed against multiple rocks before being swept away by the current

CLEMENTINE: (Breathlessly) N-No...

As the two stood, Clementine ran over to the edge, shaking her head in stunned disbelief as she tried and failed to find the body... Luke, on the other hand, quickly sprang into action.

NICK: Holy shit... I actually got him! Nick? Why are you--

Luke then grabbed Nick by the collar and pulled him towards the edge of the bridge, away from the scene...

LUKE: (Furious) Just what in the fuck were you thinking, Nick!?

NICK: (Stuttering) I was... I... I...

LUKE: You were what!?

NICK: I was just trying to help man!

LUKE: (Furious) ...!!!

Luke snapped, quickly letting go Nick and striking his friend across the face. Clementine watched the exchange, her heart pounding in her chest. The situation had gone from tense to chaotic in just a matter of mere seconds. Nick caught himself, having nearly been knocked out from the clean right to his jaw. Nick could taste the familiar metallic-like liquid dripping from his mouth as he stood, slowly...

NICK: Luke?

LUKE: That guy was... he was gonna help us

NICK: Wha- How? How do you know that?

CLEMENTINE: Because he didn't shoot us the moment he saw us, that's a start

NICK: He had you at gunpoint

LUKE: For all of five seconds you dumbass! Nggh-- Fuck! That shot rang out for miles... (Signaling to the others) We need to hurry across this bridge and fast

NICK: I was only trying to help

LUKE: Yeah, I know, that's the problem. When YOU, try to help...

Nick lowered his head, his shame and frustration visibly evident. One by one the other members of the group made their way over, each of them sparing a passing glance at Nick who continued standing there, to embarrassed to meet their gazes...

LUKE: Carlos

CARLOS: ...Yes?

LUKE: Help me out would you? Grab that rifle, and don't use it unless you absolutely have to...

SARAH: Dad?

CARLOS: ...Just keep following the others, Sarah. I'll be there in a moment

Clementine watched as Carlos picked up the rifle before turning her attention to Luke who approached Nick once more, whispering something into his friends ear. She couldn't hear what was said, but the look on Nick's face told her that whatever was said was not pleasant

LUKE: C'mon you two, It's gettin dark out, let's hurry and get up to that lodge

As the group made their way towards the lodge, the fading light cast long shadows on the forest floor. Tensions lingered in the air, still palpable from the earlier confrontation on the bridge. Clementine walked alongside Luke, their steps heavy with the what had just transpired...

CLEMENTINE: Are you...?

LUKE: I'm fine Clem... I just... I can't afford to screw up, not again, not like before...

Clementine was about to question his choice of words, but before she could, Luke picked up his pace, walking away from the young girl...

LUKE (Thoughts): Not again

A/N: I apologize for the wait, been kinda busy as of late. This chapter should hopefully make up for it though. That being said, I will see you all in the next chapter, until then, have a nice read.
