Chapter 4

The next day, when I wake, I feel Molly's forehead It's much cooler than it has been in the past few days. It goes down in two hours, back to her regular temperature. I nearly cry when her eyes open, showing her brown eyes. She walks the length of the cell without breaking a sweat. Hershel said she had the best recovery, and that she is back to normal.

I sling my bag over my shoulder, and she does the same with hers. We go to my old cell, and sit and talk for a while, happy that she's back.

And then, the prison shakes. We run outside, and there are a bunch of army trucks and a tank. With the Governor.

"Hey," he calls, "Come down here. We need to talk."

He has a new group.

I spot Carl, and walk to his side. Carl clutches my hand, and I clutch Molly's.

"It's not up to me!" Rick shouts. "There's a Council now! They run the place."

"Is Hershel on the Council?" The Governor asks. A girl yanks him out of a truck.

I suck in a breath. "What about Michonnie?" He adds. Sure enough, she's pulled out, too.

No. This can't be happening. Not now, not ever.

Molly runs to go get Lizzie, Mika, and Luke.

"I don't make decisions anymore!" Rick shouts.

"You're making the decisions today, Rick." The Governor calls. "Come down here and let's... let's have that talk."

Rick turns to look at Daryl, who nods slightly. He hugs Carl briefly, and then begins to slowly walk down the gravel path to the Govenor and his... army.

Carl wraps an arm around me. "We're loosing the prison today," I whisper.

And we all know it.

Rick walks until the fence stops him. "Let them go, right now." He says. "I'll stay down here. Talk as long as you want. But you let them go. You've got a tank. You don't need hostages."

"I do. This is just to show you I'm serious. Not to blast a hole in our new home. You and your people have until sundown to get out of here. Or they die." The Governor replies.

What? He expects us to go without a fight? He's damned wrong, he is. We won't let them take this prison without a fight, even if it destroys the prison. Then at least the Govenor won't get the prison.

"It doesn't have to go down this way." Rick pleads.

"I've got more people, more firepower; we need this prison. There it is. It's not about the past, it's about right now." The Governor replies.

"There are children here. Some of them are sick, they won't survive." Rick pleads.

"I have a tank, and I'm letting you walk away from here. What else is there to 'talk about'?" The Governor asks coldly..

Daryl wheels the cart full on guns over. I take one, and so does Carl. Actually, everyone does. We're ready to fight, when it comes to that.

A walker staggers up slowly, and the Governor shoots it. "Noise will only draw more of them over. Longer you wait, harder it'll be for you to get out of here." He replies.

"We have to do something." Carl whispers. "Your dad's got it." Daryl replies. "They're talking. I could kill the Governor right now." Carl argues. "Fifty yards?" Daryl asks. "I'm a good shot. I could end this right now."

"Or start something else." I murmur.

I glance back, and see Molly and Mika holding Judith. Like is carrying a bag, and Lizzie is arguing with them.

"You've got maybe, an hour of sunlight left." The Governor carefully estimates. "I suggest you start packing. The longer you wait, the harder it's gonna be for you to get outta here." he repeats.

"We can all live together. "There's enough room for all of us." Rick tries.

"More than enough. I don't think that my family would sleep well knowing that you were under the same roof." He replies.

"We'll live in different cell blocks. We never have to see each other, 'till we're all ready." Rick pleads.

"It could work," Hershel says. "You know it could.

"It could've. But it can't. Not after Woodbury. Not after Andrea."

I stiffen. How dare he! She was with us until the farm, and then she was tricked. Brainwashed. She didn't realize how much of a monster the Govenor was until it was too late.

"Look, I'm not saying it's gonna be easy, the fact is, it's gonna be a hell of a lot harder than standing here shooting at each other, but I don't think that we have a choice." Rick adds.

"We don't. You do." The Governor corrects.

"We're not leaving," Rick says firmly. "You try and force us, we'll fight back. The fighting will ruin the prison, leave you without a home. Like you said, the gunshots will just bring more of 'em out. They'll take down the fences, without the fences, this place is worthless. Now, we can all live in the prison, or none of us can." He adds.

The Governor leaps off the tank, grabs Michonnie's Kanata, and holds it at Hershel's neck.

I squeeze my tigger tighter, getting ready.

"You. You, in the ponytail. Is this what you want?" Rick asks a girl. "Is this what any of you want?"

The girl that he's refering to looks around wildly, and then backs away.

"What we want," the man on the tank with a scratchy voice shouts, "Is what you got. Period. Time for you to leave, asshole!"

"Look, I fought him before. And after, we took in his old friends. They became leaders on what we have here! Now, you put down your weapons, walk through those gates, you're one of us. We let go of all of it! And nobody dies. Everyone is alive right now, everyone that's made it this far. We've all done the worst kinds of things, just to stay alive! But we could still come back. We're not too far gone. We get to come back. I know we all can change." Rick says.

"Liar," the Governor says.

And swings the sword into Hershel's neck.

He falls, a red spot staining his hair and shirt.

I don't know who pulls the trigger first, by suddenly we're all shooting.

I hit two guys. Not enough.

Maggie and Beth scream.

I get up, and Carl grabs me. "I have to go get Molly. I promised her. I love you."

The tank and cars year down the gates. Carl pulls me into a hug. "I love you. I'll see you soon," he whispers, kissing me.

My gun is out of ammo. I drop it, running. My bag thumps against my back. I'm glad to see that Molly has her bag. Mika struggles toward the bus with Judith.

I grab Molly's arm. "We have to go, now!" I say. Luke climbs onto the bus, Lizzie draws her gun, and Mika ducks down, and stops clutching Judith.

I hand Molly one of my two guns. She cocks it, and we run. We're almost at the edge of the prison when a man stops us. "Maybe that 'lil boy of yours will stop fightin gonce he sees his girlfriend dead." he sneers, raising his gun. I rasie mine, too, and fire. He drops down, a bullet hole through his neck. "Go to hell, asshole." I hiss, and we keep going.

At the edge of the woods, we turn back for a brief second. I see the smoking ruins of what used to be our home. We were so secure there. We let our guard down. We lost T Dog, Lori, Axel there. Now Hershel. We fought for the prison and spilt our blood to be safe. Now, all because the damned Govenor wants everything that we have, we've lost our home.

I see Carl and Rick. Rick is beat up, bloody and bruised. Carl has to help Rick walk. Carl sees me. A herde separates us, we can't get to each other. I raise my hand, and he raises his. Then, the herde coming after me and Molly, we turn, grasp hands, and run.

"Don't look back," I whisper to her. "Don't look back."
