11 The Wolf is inside the Walls

The group emerged on the streets on Richmond after gaining entrance through a sewer.

"I'm thinking this'll go a lot better if we split up. A group this big can't exactly sneak around. Particularly if they're expecting us" David said, acting like he had authority in the group. His words though were slurred, his face bruising and swelling from the beating he had received earlier. Tripp replied quickly:

"Eleanor's in there somewhere. I'm going after her."

"Lingard brought her to the clinic. That's your best bet. Javi, that's where you'll go as well to get Kate, Gabe and Mariana. Then bring them to my house. It's the one with the raven on the hitching post. We'll all meet up there... after I pay a little visit to Joan... Stay out of sight. They'll be keeping an eye out for us" David added. Javi nodded:

"I'll go to the hospital and save them."

"I'll go with you, see if I can find Eleanor" Tripp said with a nod. Javi turned to the two teenagers:

"What about you guys?"

"There's a few people I need to see... some old friends" Y/N said coldly. Clementine added:

"If they don't know where AJ is, we'll head to the hospital for Lingard. Once we've got his location we're taking that truck and getting the hell out of here."

While Clementine spoke Y/N spun the keys he'd lifted from David's pocket on his finger.

"Well, you are owed a vehicle" Javi chuckled.

Y/N shook Tripp's hand, followed by Clem. They then turned to Javi and as she gave the man a hug Clementine whispered:

"Keep an eye on David. He may be playing nice, but I'd still watch your back."

Javi nodded and whispered back:

"Yeah, he was very quick to get rid of me before he needed us. As soon as I get Kate and the kids, I'm going to figure out what's best for us."

"Well, I hope it involves getting far away from here" Clementine replied as they separated.

"You know what's best for the people you love. No one else can make that call" Y/N added, shaking Javi's hand.

The two wandered off, keeping to the side of the street, hiding where possible, as they wandered along, looking for anyone recognisable. As they walked they stopped suddenly, hiding behind a car as two armed guards walked past on the other side of the street.

"Have you heard who we're looking for?" one of the men asked. The second shook his head.

"Javier Garcia, the baseball player. He's David's brother... the other is the Dixon."

"The Dixon?" the second asked in shock.

"Yeah, the Dixon. I heard he slaughtered a whole garrison of militia that had killed three of our scouts, single handedly. David and Joan sent him in and then stood outside with our guys listening as all hell broke lose. Twenty minutes later he just wandered out like it was nothing covered in blood, God knows how many men dead."

"Oh yeah, I heard about him. This asshole tried it on with his missus. Kid just walked up calmly and put a bullet in his face, not a single word, then went back to his dinner, cold as fucking ice. Think it would be better for us if we don't find him."

Clementine looked at the smirk on her boyfriend's face and knew Y/N would bring this up again before the first added:

"Let's hope the posters are a good likeness."

The two lovers looked at each other puzzled, waiting for the two men to disappear. Once they finally did the couple continued down the street before Clementine grabbed Y/N's arm, pulling her boyfriend to a halt as she then walked over to a wall and pulled an A4 wanted poster off the wall.

Y/N looked down at a composite sketch of his face with unintelligible scribbles on either side of it.

"Well it looks like me. What's it say?"

Clementine smiled, but with a distinct sadness.

"Wanted at the top, then underneath 'wanted, Y/N Dixon for murder, Dixon is approximately six foot tall, has a muscular frame and a distinctive horizontal scar on his left cheek. He is Caucasian, with dark hair and blue eyes and likely to be carrying a crossbow. Y/N is extremely dangerous, almost certainly armed and should not be approached under any circumstances. He may be trying to sneak into Richmond in order to murder New Frontier leadership. If sighted alert the armed forces immediately'. Well that's not good" Clementine finished with a sigh.

"Yeah, could make things difficult. But we weren't here for the long term. Guess it means we need to be quiet, and leave no witnesses" Y/N chuckled.

Clementine smiled and nodded, placing the wanted poster in her backpack and then kissed Y/N before replying:

"Let's not waste any time."

Tripp and Javier entered the hospital. Javi looked to Tripp:

"Find Elle. Tell her we're moving Kate."

"You got it. I'll meet you back here" Tripp nodded. Javi quickly rushed through the hospital and reached Kate's room. Kate was laid on the bed still, Mariana next to her and Gabe across the room looking bored.

Mariana's face lit up as she saw her uncle, rushing across and squeezing him in a tight hug:

"Javi! We thought you were... I was... super worried. Like, a lot."

"It's ok sweetheart. I'm ok, but we have to leave. Are you guys okay? They didn't hurt you, did they?"

"No. We're fine" Mariana smiled as Javi shook Gabe awake where he sat dozing off.

"We have to leave, Gabe"

"Oh. Okay" Gabe replied. Javi walked over to Kate and smiled reassuringly, squeezing her hand.

"They said you guys were denied entry" Kate said worriedly as she squeezed Javi's hand back, feeling her heart race as she did. Javi sighed:

"It's true, we're on borrowed time. The people who run this place, they're ruthless. We have to move."

"Where's my dad? Is he coming, Javi? Where is he?" Gabe panicked. Javi sighed even heavier.

"Gabe, I'm sorry, your Dad is one of those ruthless people. David's the one who stole Y/N and Clementine's son."

"What?" Kate and Mariana asked, both shocked and gasping in horror.

"No, I don't believe you" Gabe snapped back.

"It's true, Gabe. Your dad admitted it. Marched the pair of them out of camp at gunpoint, had his own gun pointed at their son's head, a baby, threatening to blow his brains out if they didn't leave. I'm sorry, Gabe, all of you. He's not the guy we remember anymore."

Mariana had tears in her eyes. Kate had gone pale. Gabe was just staring in bewilderment. Kate shook her head and began to speak:

"Wait, Javi. While you were gone, this woman, Joan, came by. I felt like she was sizing me up. It was creepy. She implied David was in trouble, like he was no longer in charge. She kept saying the kids and I didn't need to worry, but... it only made me worry more. I got a bad feeling from her."

"She's one of the leaders, with David, Lingard and another guy, Clint. Talking to Y/N the only trustworthy one is Clint. Whatever political mess David made here is on his head. I need to get you three out of Richmond, now. It's not safe. As soon as Y/N and Clementine have what they need they're leaving. I'm gonna take you back where we split off, hopefully we can ride with them."

"Ok let's go" Kate agreed. As the group left the room and entered the elevator at the end of the hall Gabe turned and asked:

"What about my Dad? We're just leaving him?"

"These people are child killers, Gabe. Your father's one of these people. I need to worry about getting you guys to safety and nothing else" Javi replied, explaining the situation again.

"I guess I was right to be worried, huh?" Kate said as they exited the hospital elevator.

"Joan ordered raids on other settlements. We found all this stuff from Prescott."

"She was behind Prescott?!" Mariana gasped. Javi nodded:

"Your Dad had ordered Y/N into other places, against soldiers as well not just civilians. No matter what he says the New Frontier have been like this from the start."

"And now the area's about to become a war zone" Kate replied, horrified.

"Javi, I know you know this already: this is not our fight."

Javi nodded.

"The only thing I care about is keeping you three safe. Let's go."

They met with Tripp and Eleanor at the front of the hospital.

"What's going on? Tripp said we had to move to David's house" Eleanor asked in confusion.

"We're not doing that. We're getting the fuck out of Richmond before it's too late" Kate replied.

"Getting out? You shouldn't even be sitting up!" Eleanor snapped back.

"What? What about my dad? We can't just leave him!" Gabe snapped for a third time.

"We aren't safe here. We need to get out while we can. Let's go, now!" Javi replied sternly, running out of patience as far as Gabe was concerned.

"If we're leaving, I've gotta get some things for the road. All my stuff is stashed in the room they gave me. I've got a gun too, sounds like we might need it" Eleanor said, still not sounding convinced with their plan.

"I'll take Eleanor to her room, we'll meet you guys where we came in?" Tripp asked and Javi nodded. They separated and as the Garcia's walked down a street Gabe suddenly stopped in his tracks.

"I'm not going, Javi" he said with anger on his face.

"What?" Kate gasped.

"I'm gonna find my dad. I have to" he snarled, turning to leave.

"Gabe, please don't do this" Mariana replied close to tears.

"He's our dad, even if you've forgotten that" Gabe said coldly as he continued walking away.

"No! Please, Gabe. Please. I never thought I could be a mom... I never thought I wanted to be a mom, until I met you and your sister. I'm begging you. Don't do this" Kate cried.

"It's my dad, Kate. I can't lose him again" Gabe said without stopping or turning.

"And I can't lose you" Kate called out. She got no reply.

Kate and Mariana stood with tears in their eyes, Javi placing a hand gently on each one's shoulder and said gently:

"I'm sorry, we've got to go."

Muffled crying and screaming came from a house in the middle of Richmond. Clementine stood next to the front door with her hat down over her eyes, on lookout in case anyone walked past.

The sounds from inside stopped as Y/N walked out, wiping his blood soaked hands.

"No luck there either. Hospital's our best bet.

Clementine nodded, leaning up to kiss her boyfriend as he finished wiping his hands and they continued forward in the shadows.

-~-

Javi, Kate, and Mariana were walking through the streets of Richmond. Javi was on lookout while the two females consoled each other.

"We got so close in the last few years, I... I thought Gabe would want to stay with us. I really saw him as my son, the way I see you as my daughter. I guess he didn't feel the same way" Kate said as she wiped her eyes. Mariana quickly hugged her, tears leaking from her own eyes as she was careful not to hurt Kate's injury.

"Just know I feel the same way, Kate. You're my Mom. You have been for a long time. I can never say how much I appreciate you and Javi, and love you both. Could I... could I call you... Mom?"

Kate was now a complete blubbering mess, hugging her daughter back and replying:

"Of course, there's nothing I want more."

Javi smiled, wiping tears of his own before they heard a click of a machine gun and looked back, three New Frontier soldiers pointing guns at them.

"I'd hold it there, folks. And I'd consider explaining yourselves. I'd talk fast. Fast and clear" a female soldier said. Javi stood in front of Kate and Mari, saying coldly:

"Easy now, no need for violence."

Another of the soldiers, a man, said with a grin:

"That's him, right? The brother? Thought so. Bring 'em in."

The third soldier approached the trio as Javi suddenly lashed out, grabbing his gun and smacking him with it, yelling "run" to the other two as he brawled with the soldiers.

-~-

The New Frontier soldiers brought Javi to the church at gunpoint, one of them bleeding.

Joan, Lingard, Clint and David were there, arguing:

"I don't like your tone, David. If this is about your brother..." Joan said coldly. David snapped, interrupting her:

"Don't pretend like you don't know what this is about. You've got a lot to answer for."

"Me? You must be joking" Joan laughed.

"What's this?" Clint asked as he saw Javi led in.

"They were trying to leave. Him, his lady friend and the girl" the bleeding soldier replied. David erupted:

"Leave? I asked you to get Kate and the kids safe! Not tuck your tail and run! Were you really gonna desert me when I needed you most?"

"Richmond's not safe. It's no place for an injured woman and a teenage girl" Javi snapped back.

"So you were just gonna leave me to it, huh?!"

"Well you were pretty quick to say goodbye to me if I remember"

David snarled at his brother's response before turning to the soldiers.

"Where are my family now?!"

"Woman and girl got away. No sign of the boy" the man replied. Joan couldn't wipe the smile from her face as she replied loudly:

"You smuggled your brother into Richmond? Despite what we agreed? Clearly, you have no respect for any of us. This is serious, David. You know we can't let this go."

"The Dixon too. I haven't seen Max or Badger since David, his brother and the Dixon jumped us" Lonnie said loudly.

"You brought Dixon into Richmond, David? And where are Max and Badger?" Joan asked with terror in her eyes. Javi smirked:

"Y/N killed them both. Payback for AJ. That's why you're so afraid of Y/N, isn't it. The fact is, Joan, you don't deserve respect! Not after the things you've done!"

"They're dead? And what things?" Clint asked, with no genuine idea what Javi was referencing. He knew about AJ of course, he was furious when he found out what the others had done. Not only had they kicked out possibly their best soldier, they had taken his child at gunpoint.

He liked Y/N, but he feared him at the same time. He had seen what the boy was capable of. Javi meanwhile was looking at the man with no hint of disdain:

"Clint, Y/N told me about you. That you're the only good man in this place. He holds you no grudges, and as for the things... Joan's been ordering raids on other communities. Peaceful communities. Sending your men to murder, loot and massacre."

"Raiding? Joan, is this true?" Lingard asked, shocked.

"That's a serious charge. You come in swinging, you better have proof" Clint said to Javier, still feeling conflicted.

"A whole warehouse full of loot. Takings from the Kingdom, from Prescott. Your boy Lonnie here was at Prescott when they sent a truck load of walkers in and slaughtered women and children, weren't you Lonnie?" Javier asked. Lonnie just chuckled while Lingard and Clint looked at each other horrified:

"Joan... How could you?" Clint gasped.

Joan walked over to a trestle table and poured herself a drink. She took a sip and asked:

"The real question is, how could I not? What would happen to us without your fertilizer, Clint? Or your pills, Paul? Do you think our community would survive? I did what I had to, to ensure that we would. It wasn't easy... But someone had to do it."

"So you survived, but at what cost? Do you even know how much suffering you've caused?" Javi snapped.

"I've no doubt it's less than I've prevented."

"If you had such good reasons, why keep it a secret?"

"I took the hard decisions on myself."

"You really think you can justify this?" Javi gasped.

Joan smiled.

"I know I can. All of you remember the winter two years ago. How much we lost. Friends. Lovers. Children. I made a promise, I would never let that happen again. The raids were just to keep up us going, 'til Richmond reached sustainability. We're so close. So close to our dream. Do we really want to risk it all by fighting amongst ourselves? We should all be on the same side of this, David. On Richmond's side. Surely you can see that?"

Javier looked at Clint and Lingard, both men looking down. He snapped:

"She's fucking delusional! Building a 'dream' on the blood of innocents!"

"I think it's time for a change around here. You're done here Joan. Soldiers!" David said sternly. The look of determination on his face faded as the seven armed men and women in the room didn't move.

"If you would, soldiers?" Joan asked with a smile, the guns all raising and pointing at the brothers.

"Looks like they aren't your soldiers anymore, David. Take them and them in a cell until I can figure out what to do with them" Joan chuckled.

David and Javi were pushed back at gunpoint. David called out:

"Clint, Lingard!"

But the two men remained silent.

"You won't get away with this, Joan! The wolf is already within the walls. You're already dead!" Javi called out laughing as he was shoved out of the church.
