23 Separated

Clementine struggled against the person who grabbed her, waiting for a chomp in the neck before she heard "stop" in her ear.

Rebecca released her and Clementine turned and hugged the pregnant woman. She whispered:

"Thank god you're ok, Rebecca. I lost everyone else."

"What do we do? Luke was with me, but... I-- I can't do this alone" Rebecca replied in a panic.

"Hey, you're not alone and I won't leave you" Clementine replied quietly but firmly.

Rebecca smiled and said thanks. They quickly noticed Jane walking passed and called out to her, Jane replying:

"Stop. Relax. You need to walk... slowly. You'll be fine."

"I can't do this. You have to help us, please" Rebecca responded.

"We can't clump together like this. It's better if we spread out. You two will be fine" Jane replied.

"Forget it. Just go. I'll help Rebecca" Clementine snapped.

Jane began walking off before she sighed and returned to the pair:

"We need to make a cow catcher"

"Just tell me what to do" Clementine said with genuine intent.

"There, that one" Jane said, pointing to a walker. "I'll get behind her, you get her attention."

Clementine nodded and did so, Jane quickly taking the walker's jaw off with her knife.

"Stay close" she said, pushing the walker from behind, knocking any other stragglers out of her way.

The three walked for about half an hour before they were finally in the clear. They stopped to give Rebecca a break when she turned to Clementine.

"Clem, what did Y/N mean by save lots? You nodded and Kenny looked really upset."

A similar look of sadness grew on Clementine's face, Rebecca apologising before Clementine smiled sadly.

"Right at the beginning, Kenny found Y/N. He had been hit in the head and was being chased by walkers. Kenny saved him. We ended up in the same group. Some things happened and there was this group from the save lots not too far away. They were bad people. Y/N wanted to go and kill them, but other people in our group talked him out of it."

Rebecca and Jane both looked shocked, Clementine wiped her eyes and continued:

"They attacked us, and Kenny's son got bit. Kenny's wife killed herself and Y/N had to give Kenny's son mercy. He's always blamed himself. He won't admit it but I know he has."

"So when he said he doesn't take chances anymore-"

Clem nodded at Rebecca and answered nonchalantly:

"Y/N will kill everyone at Howes. They're probably already dead."

The three had walked and stopped throughout the night, and once free had found a stream and washed the walker guts off themselves.

It was morning and the three had nearly reached the agreed upon meeting point. Clementine noticed Rebecca falling behind and stopped.

"Are you ok?" Clementine asked sadly.

"No, sweety. I'm not. But I'll be a lot better once we get with the others. I need to make sure everyone else made it out. Luke, Sarah, Kenny... Goddamn it, what if they aren't there?"

"If they aren't, nothing we can do about it" Jane said coldly.

Rebecca and Jane had a fiery argument causing Jane to storm off. Clementine smiled and rubbed Rebecca on the arm, saying:

"Rest for five minutes, Rebecca. We'll get there when we get there."

The three finally made it to Parker's Run, and were relieved to see Mike and Bonnie standing there.

"Oh thank god, we thought no one else made it" Bonnie said happily. She hugged Rebecca then Clementine, Clem smiling happily. It was short lived though as she looked across to the fountain that was in the centre of the site. Kenny was sat there, Sarita was laying next to him, head on his lap. She didn't look good.

"Sarita got bit in the chaos. She, she hasn't got long" Bonnie said sadly.

"Oh no" Rebecca gasped as Clementine ran over to Kenny, wrapping her arms round his neck and squeezing tight.

"Kenny I am so so sorry" Clementine whispered through tears as Kenny brought her forward into a tight hug.

"Thank god you're ok Clementine, I was so worried" Kenny gasped through tears. The pair released from the tearful hug and looked down, Sarita giving Clementine a sad tired smile.

"Sarita I am so sorry you're-"

"Not... long... K-Kenny... can't" she managed through laboured breaths. Clementine nodded at Sarita's meaning as Kenny broke down again.

"I-I love you Ke-"

Sarita was unable to finish her sentence as her body went limp, the light fading from her eyes. Kenny gasped and wailed again, Clementine squeezing him tight and whispered:

"Go over with Rebecca and Bonnie. I'll do this how Y/N taught me. It's ok Kenny. It's ok."

Kenny nodded, kissed Sarita on the forehead, and got up, walking across to where Rebecca was sat. Rebecca rubbed him gently on the arm, not knowing what to say. He whispered though:

"I'm sorry about Alvin. He was a good man."

Clementine looked down at Sarita and closed her eyes. She looked peaceful. Clementine pulled Matthew's old knife from her belt and, just as Y/N had shown her, lined it up with the slightly softer part of Sarita's temple.

"I'm sorry this happened to you, Sarita. I give you mercy."

She pushed the knife in deeply in one quick movement, making sure Sarita stayed at peace.

The group sat for nearly an hour, Kenny sitting with his head down trying not to cry, the others tired, hungry, cold and scared. Finally Mike said:

"I'm going crazy just sitting here not doing anything!"

"Just give it time, Mike. It's still early" Bonnie replied.

"Mike's right, should we look for the others?" Clementine asked.

"Forget the others, it's us I'm worried about- we've got no food, no water, it's getting damn cold, and we're losing daylight fast" Mike shot back.

"Mike's got a point. You can't just keep sitting around waiting. Things are difficult enough right now and soon you'll have a baby on your hands, too" Jane added coldly, causing Rebecca to snap:

"What, suddenly you're pretending to be concerned?"

"Seeing you people floundering the minute things don't go according to plan has just got me on edge, alright?" Jane yelled.

"Well, I don't exactly see you stepping up to help right now, either" Mike snapped back.

Clementine tried to hold her patience at the adults carrying on like children. She spoke clearly and loudly:

"We need to try and find the others, We should go find Luke, Sarah, and Nick. If they're in trouble, we might be able to help them."

"Clementine's right. After everything... after all this. If there's any chance they're still alive, we need to take it" Rebecca replied.

"I'll go. Clem can come with me. If they're alive, they can't be far. We can find them... one way or the other" Jane nodded.

"I'm surprised you didn't say go and look for your boyfriend" Mike chuckled as Clem and Jane were leaving.

"Don't need to. If Y/N said he'll be here, he'll be here" Clementine replied without turning around.

Clementine and Jane were walking through the forest roughly in the direction Sarah had ran off. As they walked Jane began to talk:

"Look, I'm gonna level with you. I was just looking for an excuse to get outta there for a bit. And you should know that finding your friends... that's a shot in the dark."

"I don't know about that. We shouldn't give up before we've even looked."

"Okay, but I wanted to talk to you, away from them. You wouldn't have made it this far if you weren't smart, but I still... I just gotta warn you. That group is cracking. I've seen it before. And, well... a lotta times, it's better to be on your own. I know you see what I'm talking about. You don't want to be here when they start... turning on each other. Turning on you."

"These are good people. We help each other. Y/N and I can't leave that."

"You'd be surprised. How much help is Kenny gonna be? What he's going through, he's more of a liability than anything. And Rebecca's "situation" is not making things better back there. You get enough broken people together... And all you're gonna get are broken decisions. And then there's Y/N."

"What do you mean then there's Y/N?" Clementine asked with anger in her voice.

"I just mean, with what he went through, it might be too much for him Clem. You've said over and over again how he protects you, but he let you walk through a herd alone, just so he could get revenge. I know you care about him but-"

"Look, buildings up ahead" Clementine said suddenly. She was hurt. She was furious. She was doing her best to hold all her anger in. She thought back to something Carley had taught her, about how sometimes it was best to let people talk who like to talk, that they can give themselves away when they are less than honest.

They came up to a caravan park, an abandoned car at its closed gate and a number of walkers inside banging at a door.

"Shit" Clementine said looking down. She bent over and picked up a broken pair of glasses.

"These are Sarah's" Clementine said worriedly before they heard Luke yelling from inside the building the walkers were attracted to.

They quickly moved to the side of the compound where they found a hole in the fence to enter, but also the zombified corpse of Nick tangled in the fence.

"Oh no, Nick" Clementine said saddened at her deceased friend.

"Look, he's your friend. You should do this" Jane said.

Clementine sighed and pulled her knife. She stood just out of Nick's reach and looked at the walker in the eyes.

"I'm sorry this happened to you, Nick. I give you mercy."

She quickly lashed out, stabbing Nick in the head, his body going limp.

"It's alright. It's done. If it comes to it...if Luke, or Sarah, or anybody needs to be put down, you gotta be ready for it. No hesitation. You know that, right?" Jane asked.

Clementine fumed again. Did Jane think she was a baby? She had survived the last three years in this apocalypse. Y/N had taught and taught and taught her, in case anything happened to him. Hell she'd mercied two of her friends in the last half an hour. She responded quietly.

"Doesn't get any easier does it?"

"It hasn't for me" Jane replied.

The two walked into a fenced off carpark where one walker was growling at the fence, facing the building Luke and Sarah were holed up in, and another was laying on the ground:

"Alright Clem, let me show yo-"

Before Jane could finish Clementine had walked forward, stabbing the walker on the ground in the back of the head. She then whistled, getting the attention of the other walker. It turned and walked towards Clem, growling with its arms out. Clementine quickly side stepped, kicked it in the back of the knee, and quickly despatched it as it fell.

"You know the knee trick?" Jane smiled.

"Y/N taught me. Help me with this smaller one" Clementine shot back. She and Jane grunted and manoeuvred the walker into the car and laid it against the steering wheel, the horn blasting and getting the attention of the walkers trying to get to Sarah and Luke.

The two rushed through the office to their left, out the door, and into the open area in front of the trailer home. They rushed quickly and heard Luke yelling inside:

"I can't help you if you... I can't help you if you don't! Why are you bein' like this? Ow! What the fuck?"

Jane ripped on the door handle, telling Clem quickly to move and after three solid kicks finally got the door open. They rushed in and slammed the door behind them, Clementine yelling "Luke!" as Jane held the door shut.

"Clementine? Man am I glad to see you. I can't get-"

Luke cut himself off as he exited a bedroom off the open living area, seeing Clem struggling to drag a sideboard to block the door. He rushed over, groaning in pain, but managed to push it with Clem and temporarily block the door.

"That won't hold for long" Jane said with fear in her voice.

"I am so glad to see y'all. It's Sarah man, I can't get her to move" Luke said worriedly. Clementine quickly walked in the room and dropped to her knees in front of Sarah, who was sat against the wall with her arms wrapped around her legs.

"Hey Sarah" Clementine said sadly.

"He's gone" Sarah whimpered, barely above a whisper.

"I know. I'm so sorry, Sarah. But we have to move. Your dad would want you to get up and move. He'd want you to live" Clementine replied gently.

"Shit that doors not gonna hold. Skylight" Jane yelled pointing to the roof.

"Luke help me with this chest of drawers"

The two grunted, pulling the heavy cabinet under the hole in the ceiling, Jane yelling to move as the front door was nearly ripped from its hinges.

"Sarah you need to get up now or you're going to die. Do you hear me?" Clementine yelled as Luke jumped up and pulled himself up in pain from his earlier beating.

"Clem we have to go now. If she won't come she won't come!" Jane yelled, slamming the bedroom door shut as walkers entered the living room.

Clementine leant back, pulled her hand back and slapped the ever loving shit out of Sarah's cheek. Sarah looked at her shocked:

"FUCKING MOVE!" Clementine roared, Sarah quickly jumping up and getting a boost from Jane, then Clementine- Jane just jumping up and clear as walkers streamed into the bedroom.

"That was close" Clementine said, laying on the roof out of breathe.
