17 Day One

A/N: The story takes a dark turn going forward. Just a heads up- hope you enjoy.

It had taken Clementine a while to cry herself to sleep, and she was woken up by a gentle shake of her shoulder and a soothing voice.

"Clementine, Clementine it's time to wake up."

She sat as she woke, confused, before suddenly looking around for Y/N, only to discover he hadn't returned during the night.

She was shocked to see the face of Bonnie above her head, being the pleasant voice wakening Clem.

Bonnie woke up before dawn and checked her watch, it was just five am but she was awake now, may as well get up.

She hadn't slept well in all honesty, the guilt from the previous evening overwhelming her. She headed out to the compound's kitchen and made a coffee, sitting with Shel and Russell, both of whom had been had been on the nightshift guard duty the previous night.

"Mornin'" Bonnie said with a tired smile that was reciprocated by the others.

"Easy night?" Bonnie asked.

"Strange night" Russell replied as Shel nodded and explained:

"Troy and Bill were in Bill's office all night."

"God knows what they were doing in there" Russell added with a chuckle. Bonnie though wasn't laughing. She had a horrible idea what had happened. Before she could reply Troy and Carver walked in, smiles on their faces, bruised and bloodied knuckles on their hands.

Bonnie's heart jumped out of her chest.

"Bonnie, Troy and I had a late night, we're gonna catch some z's. You and Tavia are in charge of the new people, take Wyatt and Vince with you. Make sure they're working and I'll talk to them tomorrow."

Bonnie stared at Bill wide eyed and nodded.

"C'mon Clem, you've got to have some breakfast then it's time for work" Bonnie said with a smile as Clem rubbed her eyes and stood up.

"Where's Y/N?" Clementine asked angrily. Bonnie looked the other way and didn't answer her as Rebecca yelled out "Where's Alvin?" and Kenny "Where the fuck is my boy?"

Tavia yelled to the group "next person who asks me where someone is gets shot. You, what's your name?" She asked pointing at Kenny. He glared at the woman, wanting to tear her throat out with his teeth before shoving the barrel of her AK up her ass and opening fire.

"Kenny. His name is Kenny" Sarita answered, worried at the look on her lover's face.

"Kenny, you'll be outside with Mike and Reggie. Vince and Wyatt are supervising. Your name?" Tavia asked Sarita.

"Sarita" she replied.

"Sarita, Jane, Rebecca, Sarah, Nick, you lot are working up on the roof in the greenhouses. Carlos you need to start an inventory of medical supplies. Bill's resting today so when you're walking through the facility keep your voices down. Hurry up and head to the commissary and get some breakfast in. We start work in ten minutes. Move!"

The others headed inside as Clementine looked around confused, asking Bonnie:

"What am I supposed to do?"

"You're working with me today sweety" Bonnie smiled.

After a quick breakfast of rice and beans in a large open room Bonnie led Clementine to a smaller room that was full of guns and magazines. Clementine had never seen such an armoury.

"You're with me today Clem. We're gonna be loading magazines."

Clementine sat across from Bonnie and picked up an empty mag, slowly filling it with bullets.

"That's it, you got it" Bonnie said with a smile. Clementine didn't respond as the two sat in awkward silence for a few minutes. Bonnie eventually spoke:

"I suppose I owe you an apology... I wasn't truthful when I came across y'all at the lodge, and I was shown a kindness I never would've expected from a group of strangers. But now folks are dead, and I can't help but feel I'm to blame. But the plan was for no one to get hurt. I truly believe that was the intent. At least, it was mine, goin' into it."

Clementine put down the magazine and looked up, glaring at Bonnie in the eyes.

"That's because it was your fault. You lead them to us."

"If I could change it, I would. I promise you."

"And I should believe you now? All I know about you is that you're a liar."

"I understand you're mad at me, and you've got every right to be, but I wanted you to know I regret my part in all this. I apologize... which don't account for much, but it's all I can offer right now."

The pair continued working before Clementine looked up at Bonnie.

"Where's Y/N? Why hasn't he come back? What's Carver doing to him?"

Bonnie's heart broke at the pain and fear in Clementine's voice. She couldn't tell the young girl the truth. She forced a smile and answered:

"I'm not sure but I reckon he's fine. Bill's just taken a shine to him I think. I'll try to find out for you after."

Clem's mood instantly turned, as she tried her hardest not to smile and began loading bullets again. Bonnie asked:

"How was your first night in the yard? I know it ain't so comfortable... but it's safe. Which is more than I can say about a lot of places out there."

"You mean my first night in prison?"

"It ain't a prison. More of a... work release."

"Didn't they do those in prisons?"

"I... probably. I don't know... I've never been to prison. Don't tell no one. Tryin' to keep a tough reputation."

Clementine smiled before Bonnie continued.

"I was supposed to go... when Luke and Carlos and all them left. I was plannin' on leavin' too. When Luke approached me about it, I-- I thought he was crazy. I mean, we're safe here. We got power. We got food. And Bill, he... he wasn't always like this."

"Why didn't you? Leave, I mean."

"If I'm bein' honest... I guess I chickened out. I justified not goin' by tellin' myself it's easier to try an' change somethin' that's broken than start all over. Take this situation with the herd... that's the type of thing that rips a community apart. He keeps things in line... he's got a lot of this stuff figured out. I don't know... I guess I just wanted to be somewhere comfortable for a while."

Her words didn't have the desired affect as Clem yelled:

"He killed Walter!"

"Only to protect his own people. Y/N could've killed us all."

"I warned him. I told Bill what would happen, back at the cabin. Every single person who has hurt me, who has tried to hurt me, Y/N has killed them. Every. Single. One"

Clementine's voice became almost robotic and cold as she finished, staring into Bonnie's eyes. A cold chill ran down Bonnie's spine. What the hell had this world done to these kids? She stammered:

"B-b-Bill overreacted. He was in the heat of the moment and he overreacted."

—~—

The two worked away throughout the morning, gradually growing more comfortable, talking more as the day went on.

"Luke had ideas about how things should go, but they didn't line up with what Bill was thinkin'...they butted heads, then Rebecca started showin', and that only made things worse. Maybe Luke was right about him... I wish he was around, but... I just hope he's safe."

Clementine smiled, hearing Bonnie talk about Luke sounded like how she felt about Y/N. The radio that sat on the desk in front of the pair suddenly crackled to life, Tavia's voice on the other end:

"Hey Bonnie, you and the girl still in the armoury?"

"Yeah we are Tavia."

"Well drop the girl back with the group and head into the commissary. It's time for dinner."

Bonnie looked at Clementine stunned before chuckling: "we've been at it all day."

The pair left the armoury and as they walked back towards the roller door to the prisoner's yard Clementine asked suddenly:

"Could you look for Y/N now? Please?"

Bonnie looked down at Clementine's large hazel eyes and internally panicked. She had told the girl she would and didn't want to break her trust again. She sighed.

"You stay right here Clementine. Don't move. I'll go look if Bill's in his office."

Clementine nodded happily and did as she was told. Bonnie walked towards the staircase that led to Bill's office. Her anxiety rose as she ascended the stairway, knocking on the office door and then opening it:

"Bill I'm sorry to bother you but-"

She stopped dead in her tracks in horror. A body that was obviously Y/N was laid on Bill's desk, being held down by the arms by Tyler and Lowell. He was topless, his torso black and blue and red from abuse and he had what looked like a hessian sack over his head and face.

Bill's desk had been raised on some cinderblocks at one end, so Y/N's feet were above his head. He was thrashing and gurgling and choking as Troy and the the other two laughed, Troy pouring water slowly onto Y/N's mask covered face.

"Fucker's got some fight in him don't he" Troy laughed before Bonnie suddenly yelled:

"What the hell are you doing? Stop it!"

None of the men did, Troy though looked up at Bonnie furiously and snapped:

"We're doin' what Bill told us to. Take it up with him. Go on woman, get."

He then smirked evilly as he poured more water onto Y/N, forcing him to thrash and cough and splutter again.

Bonnie caught sight of Alvin as she left, he was tied to a chair with a gag in his mouth. He had been beaten to a bloody pulp. He looked at Bonnie wide eyed, fearful, begging for help.

Bonnie ran terrified from the office. She leant against the office wall on the stairs, trying to compose herself as tears leaked from her eyes. She steadied her breathing, wiped her eyes and forced a smile on her face before walking down the steps and over to Clementine.

"Sorry darling, neither of them are up there. I'll try to find Bill later when he gets up, ok?"

Clementine nodded disappointingly as she was let into the yard for the evening.

—~—

Half an hour later they were brought beans and rice again, Clementine eating her share and withdrawing from the group, instead laying on her bed, praying Y/N was ok until she fell asleep.
