13 Christmas Miracle
The group were exhausted by the time they made their long journey up the hill. As they reached a large boarded up lodge Carlos stopped at the head of the group, Luke puffing as he had been pushing Rebecca from behind, trying to help her move up the steep hill and not fall down it.
Clementine had continuously looked backwards, worried about Y/N, wondering where he could be. She had lost sight of him as he had charged at the growing horde that was crossing the bridge. She was pulled back to the present as Rebecca and Carlos broke out in an argument:
"Well? What are we waiting for?" Rebecca snapped as much as she could given how heavy she was breathing.
"We have to be careful, we don't know-"
"Careful?!?! We've been on the road for five days. My back is done bein' careful." she roared, cutting Carlos off. Before he could reply the group collectively jumped at a loud rustle from the bushes, Nick and Luke raising their guns before quickly lowering them as their mouths dropped open.
Y/N emerged from the bushes, covered in blood and viscera, his hair damp from sweat as it laced his forehead. He looked at the stunned faces staring back at him with mouths agape and asked simply:
"What?"
Clementine rushed Y/N, hugging him tight and ignoring the blood that transferred to her from his clothes. She squeezed him before pulling back and asking worriedly:
"No bites?"
"No bites" Y/N said with a smirk as Luke approached the pair.
"Goddamn, Y/N. You scared the hell out of us. You alright?"
Y/N nodded as the others approached, Alvin asking with wide eyes "what happened?"
"I held 'em off for as long as I could, don't even know how many I killed... thirty... forty... the bottleneck on the bridge helped but they just kept comin'. That gun shot was like a damn dinner bell. In the end I led 'em off west, hopefully they keep heading that way."
Rebecca approached Y/N with a grateful smile, nodding and holding out a bottle of water.
"Thanks, Y/N. I heard what you said, get Bec up the hill, I'll hold them off. Thank you."
Y/N nodded as Rebecca handed him the bottle:
"I didn't have a chance to boil this yet. Why don't you try and clean up a little bit, get that gunk off you?"
Y/N chuckled and said "thanks" as Luke turned to the others.
"Alright guys, why don't you check out the lodge while Y/N cleans up, and I got a special job for Clem"
The others walked off, towards the giant lodge to their right.
Luke turned to Clem and smiled looking at the large ski lift tower next to them:
"Well, it'd be good to know if anybody's actually back there. Could probably get a better view from up top. You'd have an easier time gettin' up there. You feel like takin' a look? It'll be just like climbing a treehouse. You know, just a really tall treehouse. Made of steel."
"I had a treehouse once" Clem replied.
"Well, there you go."
"I hated it" Clementine shot back.
"I'll go up, never mind you going Clemmy" Y/N called out.
Clem and Luke turned to see Y/N topless, having taken his blood soaked jumper off as well as the T-shirt underneath. Clementine looked at his lean but muscular frame, a body forged by the hellscape they had lived through for the last few years and felt herself burning up completely at the sight.
Luke looked between an oblivious Y/N and a Clem who was redder than a ginger in the Sahara and chuckled.
"Best Clem does it if you're all wet Y/N. I'll catch her if she falls."
Clementine shook off her overwhelming feelings and nodded quickly to Luke saying "I'll get going" as she began to climb.
Y/N tipped the water over his head, washing down his face and hair as much as possible. There was a light pattering of snow hitting the ground so Y/N used it as best he could to wipe off his jumper and tied it around his waist. He would have to hang it after to air. He put his shirt back on and strapped his crossbow to his back walking over to Luke just as Clem called from the top:
"Wait, I see something! Flashlights on the other side of the bridge. Luke!... Luke??"
Clem looked down as Y/N watched Luke run off to the others:
"The others are having an argument. Just worry about you right now. I'm right here ok, one step at a time"
Clementine nodded to her best friend as she slowly descended. She got closer and closer before she thought back to Y/N, topless, covered in sweat and...
She slipped off the steps
"Whoa" she cried before feeling an oomph as she landed in Y/N's arms. It was fortunate it wasn't a far fall.
"My hero" Clementine giggled as Y/N rolled his eyes.
"Never a dull moment with you Clemmy" Y/N replied with a sarcastic chuckle.
"That a compliment?" Clem giggled again.
"Not really, c'mon lets see what's going on. You stay behind me though" Y/N said as he gently lowered Clem to the ground.
They walked up to the ski lodge to hear the group arguing with the residents of the building:
"Listen, everyone, just stay calm."
"Who are you? Are you trying to rob us?"
"Excuse me, honey, but do I look like a fucking thief?"
"Everyone calm down."
"Hey, man, you calm the fuck down."
"Sarah, get behind me."
"Just tell us who you are."
"We ain't here to rob nobody. Put the gun down, man."
"Fuck that!"
Y/N stopped dead at the aggressive "fuck that". He recognised that voice, but it couldn't be. It couldn't be. He pushed passed Nick, Alvin and Carlos, standing at the front, his eyes as wide as his mouth. The man in front of him had the same look on his face
"Son?" Kenny asked before Y/N crashed into him in a heartfelt embrace as Luke asked:
"Wait you know this guy?"
"Kenny!!!" Clem said happily, having pushed her own way to the front and joining the two in the embrace.
"I'll take that as a yes" the balding man from the lodge smiled.
They released the hug as Y/N and Kenny both wiped tears from their eyes.
Kenny looked at Y/N, almost as tall as he was now, a bit wider and obviously having packed on some muscle over the last few years and he smiled, placing a hand on each of Y/N and Clem's shoulders.
"You got big, son" Kenny smiled. He chuckled as Y/N looked at his grey beard and replied:
"You got old, Ken."
Kenny laughed and smiled at both of his kids, asking:
"These people with you?"
Y/N and Clem nodded and Kenny smiled, saying:
"We can talk inside."
"Great, I just started dinner" the balding man said with a smile.
"Are you sure you don't mind?" Carlos asked, the man replying:
"It's gonna storm soon. Please, come in."
The group began walking into the lodge as the cabin group looked around stunned.
"It's beautiful" Clementine smiled. Music was playing, Christmas decorations were hung and a giant Christmas tree was being decorated. The bald man began speaking as they entered:
"Kenny and Sarita have been staying with us for several weeks. Used to be a ski lodge, obviously, so we have plenty of food. And believe it or not, we still get some power from that wind turbine out front. We tend to keep most of the lights off at night to avoid drawing attention. But after we found this stuff in storage, we couldn't resist making an exception."
Kenny mimed to Clementine and Y/N that Walter was talking too much, and Clem quietly laughed.
"What's so funny?" Walter asked turning around with a smile. Kenny chuckled:
"Oh, nothin', Walt. Walter here is one smart son of a bitch. Makes a mean can of beans too."
"Well, why don't you two catch up while I get some dinner started?" Walter said with a smile as Nick, Luke, Rebecca, and Alvin entered the lodge. Walter turned to them:
"Please, make yourselves at home. You can leave your things over there."
"The hell we will." Rebecca snapped angrily, sensing a trap.
"Yeah, I'm holdin' onto my rifle, thanks." Nick added.
"You're our guests here. There's no need to worry" Walter smiled in a reassuring way.
"Tell him to put his gun down, then." Nick replied, motioning to Kenny.
Ken looked like he was considering his options and turned to the teens:
"Will you vouch for these people, kids? If you tell me they're good, then I'm good."
"Us? You were the one wavin' a gun around, man" Nick snapped before stopping as Y/N held his hand to him, telling him to shut up.
"The mouthy one's a dumbass, but they're good people, Ken" Y/N said honestly. He turned to the cabin group.
"Ken is the man I got separated from in Savannah. He's been ten times the father to me than my own ever was."
Y/N walked abruptly towards the edge of the foyer, pulling a large empty duffel bag that was under a seat and placed his crossbow, his knife and his glock in it. Clementine followed his lead, placing her handgun in it and laying her backpack on the floor. Kenny placed his rifle in it, as the cabin crew followed suit and Luke placed his machete and crowbar in, zipping the bag up as much as he could.
"Wow dad a Christmas tree!" Sarah said excitedly, looking at Y/N and saying loudly, much to her father's distain:
"I hope there's mistletoe!"
Y/N ignored her as Kenny said "come with me kids" and the woman in Kenny's group led the rest upstairs to their sleeping area.
Kenny and the teens sat on a couch, Kenny at one end, Y/N at the other as Clementine sat directly next to Y/N, turning to Kenny and pulling Y/N's arms over her shoulders, holding them with her hands. Kenny smirked to himself, leaning forward and tapping Clem's hat:
"Still wearin' this dirty old thing, huh? You know, I half-expected to see Lee walk up next to you. You guys were like two peas in a pod. Oh, shit, I didn't mean to... It's just hard not to think about it, you know? Did he... are..."
Ken struggled to formulate his thoughts as Y/N said calmly:
"We were with Lee, Carley and Christa until a couple of days ago. Omid was killed about a year ago, fuck I miss that guy, and we were attacked and separated a few nights ago. We're hoping they're ok."
Clementine nodded and Kenny smiled.
"So your quick thinking worked? Cutting off Lee's hand saved his life?"
"It did" Clementine said proudly as she leant back further into Y/N's chest.
"And they got to you alright? You were ok sweetheart?" Kenny asked worriedly.
"Sort of" Y/N answered as Clementine beamed and said to Kenny:
"Y/N saved me."
"I knew it. I knew you would. This boy had a fire in him, sure as shit, Clem."
"I- we got separated, after I lost you Ken. I told the others to get out of the city and I would fight my way through to Clem. You remember how packed the streets were."
Kenny nodded and answered:
"Yeah there were fucking thousands of them."
"Y/N fought his way through with just his knife and a piece of glass."
"A piece of..." Kenny trailed off confused as Clementine released Y/N's hand and held out his left palm, the prominent scar crossing it. Kenny's eyes widened as he muttered:
"Fucking hell boy!"
"Ken if I had any notion you were alive I would have... I mean..."
Y/N got flustered as he struggled to express his meaning right. Kenny just smiled:
"It's ok, son. It was pretty hairy, I managed to get out of Savannah. I looked around the outskirts for days hoping to find you all... but hell we're together again now, against all odds."
Y/N and Clementine both smiled genuine happy smiles just as the Indian lady from before walked up.
"Are you all catching up?" She asked with a smile as Kenny stood happily:
"Clem, Y/N, this is my girl, Sarita. Ain't she beautiful?"
"It's so lovely to meet you both. Kenny has told me so much about the two of you. Especially you, Y/N."
Y/N felt a warm proud blush grow on his cheeks as he answered bashfully:
"Ken found me in a bad way, right at the start. I owe him my life"
"You put a hole in that talk right now, son. You paid that debt a thousand times over" Kenny chuckled just as Walter re entered the living room area.
"Hey, Walt, where's Matthew? He still out there rootin' around?" Kenny asked:
"Of course he is. Well, I'll start dinner" Walter smiled, heading to the kitchen as the rest of the cabin crew entered the living area.
Sarita smiled:
"Carlos, right? Mind if I steal your daughter for a secret mission?"
"Stay in sight, sweetie" Carlos said with a nod.
"Can we do anything to help?" Luke asked as he approached with Nick.
"Could use a hand outside. We got a lotta heavy supplies we need to bring in before that storm hits."
"Sure" Luke nodded.
Kenny turned to Y/N who smiled and said "already on it." Kenny chuckled and asked Clem:
"Clem, why don't you help Walt with dinner?"
As Clementine walked in the kitchen, Y/N exited the lodge with Kenny and the others, not wanting to leave his adoptive father's side for even a moment.

After about half an hour Y/N and Kenny re entered the lodge and saw Alvin and Walter talking:
"Alvin, you seen Clemmy?" Y/N called out.
"She's upstairs with Bec" Alvin smiled. Y/N nodded and turned to Kenny who chuckled:
"Yeah, yeah, go check on your girlfriend."
Y/N stopped dead as he struggled to say:
"She's not, she's, we..."
Kenny laughed and replied: "just go boy."
Y/N nodded and turned to walk quickly away. He got upstairs to see Clementine's ear against Rebecca's stomach and a giant smile on her face
"Y/N, just in time, the baby's kicking" Clem said ecstatically.
"Would you like a feel?" Rebecca asked smiling.
"Could... could I?" Y/N asked apprehensively.
"Of course" Rebecca said with a smile as Y/N came over and Clementine guided his hand to the right spot.
Y/N's eyes lit up as he felt a thump against his hand from inside Rebecca's stomach. Both Rebecca and Clementine smiled at Y/N's excitement, Clementine in particular thinking about one day, possibly, what if that was her belly, and Y/N was-
Her face lit up bright red at the thought before the smile faded from Becca's face as she said sadly:
"If this baby isn't his he'll kill me."
"He won't kill you" Clementine said as she squeezed Bec's hand in support.
Y/N looked up into Rebecca's eyes and answered her honestly:
"I been around men who beat women like dogs and don't lose an ounce of sleep all my life. Alvin ain't that guy. He's a good man."
Rebecca smiled and wiped a tear from her eye as Alvin came up to the floor they were on with a bottle of water for her.
"There's my man" she said with a smile.

The group had answered the call for dinner and Clementine and Y/N had been the last two to fill their bowls full of the bean and peach stew.
"Can't remember the last time I had peaches" Y/N chuckled as they entered the dining area and Kenny and Luke both called out "over here" at the same time.
Y/N's face didn't move from Kenny, a large smile on his face as he walked forward. Clem saw the sadness on Luke's face as she mouthed "sorry" and walked over to sit next to Y/N.
"So, guys, we were just talkin'. What's the deal with the kid? What's his name, Luke? He in charge? You trust him?" Kenny asked with a serious face.
"Kenny, please" Sarita said.
"Sarita, we don't know these folks."
"They seem nice."
"Yeah, well, gators seem nice too, 'til they bite your damn arm off."
"Kenny!" Sarita gasped.
"With all due respect, Sarita, Kenny's right. Did he tell you about the Saint John's?"
"Uh no, he didn't."
"They seemed nice. Three months into everything, invited our group from the motel, trade fuel for food. They were cannibals, one was a pedo-"
Y/N snarled, his lip curling as the spoon he was holding bent in his hand. Clementine grabbed his hand and squeezed. She hadn't understood at the time what Danny wanted, why Y/N was so furious. She did now.
"You can't trust many people these days. Living are more dangerous than the dead. But yeah, Luke's not a threat Ken. He's a good guy."
Kenny nodded, instantly trusting Y/N's judgement.
"That guy Al said they were on the run?" Kenny asked as Y/N straightened his spoon and began eating again.
"Yeah some people are after them" Clem nodded.
"Well, you don't have to worry about that no more. They'll go tomorrow and you two can stay here" Kenny smiled.
"Absolutely. You two stay with us as long as you want" Sarita smiled.
"They're stayin' for good." Kenny said in a shocked tone.
"If that's what they want" Sarita replied, not wanting to pressure the teens.
"Of course they do. Right, guys?"
The teens smiled as Clem rested her head on Y/N's shoulder as he spoke.
"I spent the last three years thinkin' you were dead Ken. There's no way in hell I'm leavin' you now!"
"Yeah, thank you" Clementine smiled.
"This is like a dream. Damn it, I am so happy right now, I can't even tell you!" Kenny smiled.
They continued to eat before eventually Sarita and Walter got up to take their bowls out and Luke and Nick came over to sit down at their table, beginning an awkward conversation:
"Hey there" Kenny said somewhat awkwardly.
"Hey" Luke replied in the same tone.
"Hope you like the food."
"Oh, it's... it's great. Thank you."
"Peaches and beans. Great for nutrition. Not too great on the way out, though, I tell ya" Kenny laughed. "So it's Luke... and Nick. Luke and Nick. You guys sure do look like a match."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Nick snapped.
"I'm just sayin', you look like good friends, that's all" Kenny chuckled glancing to Y/N who smirked.
"So what was your plan here? Hold out for the winter?" Luke asked.
"Actually, we were thinkin' of movin' on. Somewhere up north. You ever heard of a place called Wellington?" Kenny asked as Y/N and Clem nodded. Luke shot back:
"Wellington? The hell is that?"
"A settlement up north. It's where Y/N and I were headed with our friends" Clementine said sadly as Y/N rubbed her back.
Kenny looked at the kids sympathetically and added:
"It's a big settlement up near Michigan, I heard there's a few up that way."
"Michigan?" Nick asked
"You got a hearing problem, kid? Yeah, Michigan. Think about it. Fresh water, lots of land, and cold-ass winters, so the walkers get slow." Kenny snapped.
"Sounds like bullshit"
"Listen, Vanilla Ice, I don't know what your deal is, but you're more than welcome to take off in the morning"
"Well, that'd be just fine by me"
"What's the deal with these guys, Y/N?" Kenny asked, turning to his boy.
"Hey, fuck you, buddy!" Nick yelled. Y/N was on his feet in a moment, Kenny was his father as far as Y/N was concerned. Disrespect like that was fighting words.
"You wanna try cursin' him out again Nick? I already broke your nose once!"
Clementine was on her feet, placing a hand on Y/N's chest trying to hold him back. Luke tried to do the same, keeping peace on his side as he answered:
"It's fine, Nick. Y/N, you're just tired. We're not stayin'. So we can all have a good nights sleep and head out in the morning"
"They're stayin'" Kenny snapped, Luke's head swiveling round as he asked "Wh-- 'scuse me?"
"You heard me" Kenny answered before Walter appeared with his hands raised:
"Gentlemen, please. There's no need for this. Now, look, we've all had a long day. Please, eat."
"Pass me that can, Duck" Kenny said angrily to Y/N before gasping and realising what he had said.
"Duck? Who's Duck?" Luke asked, seeing the expression on both Y/N and Kenny's faces.
"Duck was his son. Y/N had to give him mercy" Clementine said sadly.
Luke looked between the two saddened as Y/N shot back on his feet, grunting: "I need some fresh air. I'm goin' for a walk"
"Hey, Clementine. Would you, uh, lend me a hand outside for a moment?" Walter asked with a smile.
Clementine nodded and got up, following Walter outside. Y/N had already disappeared when they got out there. As the doors closed Walter gave Clementine a sad look:
"I'm sorry about that. I used to be a teacher. And I remember what it's like to be caught in the middle of two cliques. I suspect they'll find common ground soon enough. It may take a little time, but that's just how these things work. Everything will be fine. Listen, relationships are like any machine. You don't throw them out when they break down. You get your hands dirty and you grease the wheels. What do you say? Will you help me work on them?"
"I really want to stay with you and Kenny. I know Kenny means more to Y/N than anything, and I could never be apart from Y/N" Clementine smiled. It was returned by Walter, who had seen more than enough during his time as a teacher to recognise young love when it developed. He answered happily:
"Then stay you shall. I know that'll please Kenny."
"It's not just Y/N. I missed him too"
"And he missed you, I can assure you. They say the world is over, but I'll tell you a secret: it's not. People are more political now than they ever were before. In the end, we can't change the world. All we can do is continue to learn from each other; to empathize and use our heads. "All war is a symptom of man's failure as a thinking animal." Steinbeck. Have you read him? Well, we have plenty of time to catch you up on your reading. My partner Matthew is amassing quite the literature collection. I think you'll like him. In any case, the point is: as long as we have our wits about us, we can always make the right choice. Right?"
"It's never that easy" Clementine replied sadly. She was all but certain now, Matthew was the man Nick killed on the bridge.
"What's the matter, Clementine? Is there something you want to tell me? You can talk to me, Clem. There's almost nothing you could tell me that would surprise me. I can promise you that."
"I'm worried about your friend... I think that-" Clementine was cut off by Walter smiling.
"Don't worry. Matthew will be back soon and everything will be fine."
"Hey, kids. What are you two talkin' about? Y/N not out here?" Kenny asked as he approached the pair.
"No, he was out of sight when we got out here, and just politics, Kenny" Walter smiled.
"The hell?" Kenny asked, wondering why on earth anyone would want to think about that.
"Being from Florida, I would imagine you know all about politics, Kenny" Walter smiled.
"Man, I know one advantage of living in the apocalypse is not dealin' with that shit no more. I was just gonna check the windows 'round back before this storm hits. Give us a hand?"
"Sure" Walter smiled.
The group turned round the corner of the ski lodge only to find a woman looking into their windows. Kenny takes a step forward, but Walter puts his hand on his shoulder to stop him, asking kindly:
"Miss?"
The woman was surprised to see them, and suddenly put her hands up after noticing that Kenny is carrying a rifle.
"Please. Do you have any food?" The woman asked, Walter replying: "Are you okay?"
She stammered back:
"I saw the house, and... I have a family. We're starving. We live down there."
"Of course. Why don't you come in, miss...?"
"Bonnie" the woman replied.
"Walt, I don't know. You're just gonna let her in like that?" Kenny said aggressively.
"It's fine, Kenny" Walter smiled.
"We don't know this girl."
"Then we'll have to get to know her, right, Clem?" Walter smiled. He was shocked at what the teen said next:
"If Y/N was here he'd say tie her up, then go look if there is really a family. If it's a trap, put a bullet in her."
The woman suddenly looked terrified, Walter was shocked as well as he said:
"Just, just wait here"
And took off quickly inside. Bonnie looked awkwardly at Kenny before asking Clem:
"I have a little girl like you. How old are you, sweetie?"
"Thirteen" Clem replied abruptly as Walter exited the ski lodge with a box full of cans.
"Here you are, miss."
Bonnie was taken back by the man's generosity, answering: "This is too much."
"Just help someone else down the line" Walter smiled.
"Thank you so much. I'll be goin' now" Bonnie said with an expression Clementine couldn't read. As the woman walked away Kenny said gruffly:
"Clem, go on inside and get to bed. Walt and I gotta talk for a second."
Clementine nodded and headed inside. As she walked in Luke was hiding behind a column near the cafeteria
"Psst. Psst. Don't freak out. It's me, Luke"
Clementine looked at him like he was an idiot as she answered:
"Yeah, I known it's you."
"Listen, okay. I gotta tell you somethin'. That guy on the bridge was Walter's friend" Luke said as he handed Clem a framed photo of Walter and Matthew.
"See, I knew something was off, so I asked Sarita about their friend. Now they're all worried he's not back yet."
"Yeah I know he was" Clem replied sadly.
"Damn it. Damn it, Nick. I don't think Walter knows yet. So we have to keep this quiet. I mean, who knows what the hell he'd do if he found out" Luke replied. Clementine looked at him shocked, answering:
"We should tell him. They were in love. He has the right to know."
"He's gonna ask who did it. And you're gonna tell him?"
"It's the right thing to do."
"It's right to get Nick killed? Because that's what's gonna happen. Now, do you still have that knife? Because if it was Matthew's, and Walter sees it, he's gonna put two and two together."
Clementine was pissed at at Luke. Would he pull the same thing if Nick 'accidentally' killed her? or Y/N? She replied gruffly:
"It's with the other weapons."
"Okay, well, go get rid of it. And I'll find Walter and run interference. Oh, and, uh... keep an eye out for Nick."
"I'm right here. What's up?" Nick answered from behind Luke.
"Oh, uh, it's nothing, man. I just wanted to check and see if you're okay." Luke answered with a nervous chuckle.
"You comin' to tuck me in?"
"Yeah, yeah, somethin' like that." Luke chuckled again.
"We have to tell you something" Clem answered, grabbing the photo and handing it to Nick."
He looked down puzzled before a look of horror grew on his face as realisation kicked in and he said panickedly: "Oh, Jesus. Oh, God."
"Goddamn it. Hey, Nick, shut the fuck up" Luke whisper shouted.
"I can't, man. I can't."
"Do not fucking blow it."
"Blow it? It's over. I have to tell him, Luke.
"What? No! You... hey, Nick, you cannot do that. Are you fuckin' nuts?"
"I got to. I can't live with that on me."
"Okay, I hear you, but... I mean, fuck, man, do you know what he's gonna do?"
"You don't know he'll do anything."
"Are you kidding me? Nick, you shot his friend!"
"You should tell him" Clem added "it will be way worse if he finds out on his own."
"Yeah, yeah" Nick nodded.
"Jesus Christ. Look, Clem, just... go do that thing. Alright?" Luke said angrily. Clementine scowled, walking off to search her backpack.
She knelt down next to the dufflebag and pulled her back pack out only to see the knife was gone. She looked up and saw Walter outside, leaning on a post with a knife in his hand. She exited the lodge and asked: "are you ok?"
Walter unsheathed the knife and answered:
"I always liked this knife. Gave it to Matthew when all this started. I know he's dead. Who did it? Was it that kid? What's his name? Nick? Heard him talkin' earlier. Somethin' about shooting a man. I could see it. I could see it on his face. Wasn't sure then, but now..."
"It was us. It was our fault. Nick shot him." Clementine replied sadly.
"Jesus. I... I don't feel good" Walter said with his head in his hands. He quickly asked:
"Is... is Nick a good man? Or is he just like everyone else? Is he just one of those... those fuckers that don't give a shit about anyone but themselves?"
"He is. He's a good guy, Walter."
Nick exited just at that moment as Walter had turned around and began speaking, holding back tears:
"He was always going out alone. I told him something like this would happen. But he wouldn't listen. No, Matt always knew best."
"What's going on?" Nick asked Clem as she whispered:
"You need to tell him."
"Tell him what?"
"What happened on the bridge."
Walter turned around to see Nick and asked, tears streaming down his cheeks:
"Tell me what you did. Just tell me, son. Tell me what happened."
Nick saw the knife in Walter's hands and raised his, saying with genuine remorse:
"From a distance, it looked like anyone. I... I thought he was going to shoot my friends, and I... I shot Matthew. But it happened real fast. I didn't... I didn't know if I hit him. But I did, and... I didn't mean to."
"Do you know what you've done to me? Do you have any idea?" Walter roared.
"I didn't mean to. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, Walter."
Walter looked at Nick one last time and threw the knife away.
He wiped his eyes as the three suddenly looked up, the wind turbine suddenly spinning faster and faster and making an extremely loud grinding sound. Kenny, Carlos, Sarita, and Luke ran outside, Kenny yelling:
"Walt! What's going on?!"
Walter didn't answer as the turbine got even louder, Kenny yelling:
"This storm's got it spinnin' outta control. That sound's gonna draw walkers. We gotta shut it down, now!"
