Chapter 20

"Damn." Rick says, hitting the steering wheel. "What's wrong?" Lori asks. "We've been red for the last hour." He replies. "We better make sure how much more we got." T Dog asks.

Rick honks, and then stops. So does everyone else. We all hop out. "You out?" Daryl asks. "Been running on fumes." Rick replies. "We can't stay here," says Maggie, holding a shotgun. "We can't all fit in one car." Glenn points out. "Someone will make a run for some gas in the morning." Rick says. "Spend the night here?" Carol asks. "I'm freezing." Carl complains. "We'll build a fire, yeah? Lori says. "We gonna look for fire wood. Stay close. How much ammo?" Daryl asks. "Not enough." Rick says. "We ant just sit here with out asses hanging out." Maggie says. "Watch your mouth." Hershel says. "Everyone stop panicking and listen to Rick."

"Alright, we'll set up a perimeter. In the morning we will find gas and some supplies, we will keep pushing on." Rick says. "Glenn and I can go make a run now try and find some gas." Maggie says. "We've gotta stay together. God forbid somethin' happens if people get stranded without a car." Rick says. "Rick, we're stranded now." Glenn says. "I know it looks bad, we've all been through hell and worse but at least we found each other.

I headed to the car, opening up my pack and rustling around. I wasn't sure what I was looking for. I heard footsteps behind me. "What are you doing?" Carl asks. I paused, glancing over my shoulder. "Looking for my gloves." I say randomly. "They're on your hands." Carl replies. I paused. "Oh."

"What're you really doing?" He asks. "I don't know." I say.

-Nighttime-

We sit huddled around a tiny fire in clumps. T Dog stands guard while Daryl feeds the fire. I lean against Carl, and he had his arms around me. We both stared into the fire. I could feel the adults giving us knowing glances and murmuring.

Lori comes and sit behind us. I can hear Carol muttering loudly to Daryl. "We're not safe with him! Keeping something like that from us?" she glances around and lowers her voice so that we can't hear.

"I think that we should take our chances." Maggie says to Glenn before lowering her voice.

A loud rustle comes from the bushes. "What was that?" Beth asks.

Everyone stands up, except for Lori, Carl, and me. "Could be anything. Raccoon, possum, walker." Daryl says. "We need to leave. I mean, what are we waiting for?" Carol asks. "Which way?" Glenn asks softly. "It came from over there." Maggie says, pointing. "Back from where we came." Beth says. "Last thing we need is for everyone to be running off in the dark. We don't have the vehicles. No one's traveling in foot." Rick says.

"Don't panic." Hershel says to the group. I felt Carl tighten his arms around me. "I'm not, I'm not sittin' here waitin' for another herde to blow through. We need to move. Now." Maggie says. "No one is going anywhere." Rick snaps. "Well, do something!" Carol hisses.

"I am doing something! I'm keeping this group together. Alive! I've been doing that all along! No matter what. I didn't ask for this! I killed my best friend for you people for God's sakes!" Rick hisses.

Everyone stares at him. Carl stiffens. "You saw what he was like." Rick says. "How he pushed me. How he compromised us. How he threatened us. He staged the whole Randall thing. Led me out to put a bullet in my back. He gave me no choice! He was my friend, but he came after me. My hands are clean. Maybe you people are better off without me. Go ahead. I say there's a place for us, but maybe it's just another pipe dream. Maybe I'm fooling myself again. Why don't you go and find out yourself. Send me a post card! Go on, there's the door. You can do better. Let's see how far you get. No takers? Fine. But let's get one thing straight-You're staying. This isn't a democracy anymore." He finishes.

We are shell shocked. No one moves. We all look around.

This is it.
