Chapter 18
We snuck out the window. And we found them. "Dad?!" Carl asks, his voice full of tears. Rick, kneeling over Shane's body, looks over. "Carl." He begins. A tear trickles down Carl's face. I grip a knife tightly. "No. You should be back home with mom." I gasp. Carl cocks and aims his gun in Rick's direction. He stops walking.
Shane's zombie stands up, and begins staggering toward Rick alarmingly fast, and clunky. He groans and moans. "Just... just put the gun down. It's not what it seems." Rick begs. And Carl pulls the trigger.
Shane's zombie falls down, lifeless. Rick whirls around, realizing that Carl was aiming at the zombie, not him. Carl lowers his gun and runs to Rick. I follow behind, scanning the area for walkers. Surely some walkers heard the gunshot.
What I didn't realize was how many heard the shot.
They walk to Shane's zombie. "Wait." Rick says, holding an arm out. Carl stops, and tugs me back behind him. Rick walks to Shane's corpse.
As we walk away, Rick and Carl talk. I turn to look at them, and freeze. "Uh... guys?" I ask. They turn.
A huge horde or walkers with at least 200 walkers is following us. They quickly fan out around us, some in front, some next to us, some behind us. "Oh my god... go go go go go!" Rick hisses. We run to some bushes. "We've gotta get to the house." Carl says. "Tell the others?" I add. "We'll never get through that." Rick hisses. "Can't go around. Carl, Isabelle, stay close." He adds. We nod. "Go!" we start running for the barn. A zombie lunges toward us, and we dodge it.
We make it to the barn, shutting the doors and sliding a poker stick into the handles , locking it. They attack the doors, pounding and growling. The boards begin to give way, and gray fingers with dirty, overgrown fingernails are seen.
We poured gasoline into the hay. Rick shoves me up the ladder, and Carl climbs halfway. "What about you?" Carl asks, trembling. "I'll be right there. Drop the lighter when I say. We will stop some of them from reaching the house, and distract the others, so at least we'll have a chance. Hey, hey. Look at me." He replies. "You can do this. Keep Isabelle safe until I get up there. Carl, I love you. Go." He adds. Carl climbs up and pulls me away from the edge.
Rick hits the doors, yelling and hollering. He finally slides the poker out, flinging the doors wide open. The walkers pour in, snarling and reaching for Rick as he backs away. He climbs up the ladder, and they reach for him, even though he's too high for them. "Carl... NOW!" Rick shouts.
Carl sparks the lighter and lets it drop onto the zombies. They light up immediately, thanks to the gasoline in the straw. They give no recognition to that they're burning, and they sway and growl and reach for us as one, burning horde. He pulls me back, the fire illuminating our faces.
The barn itself begins to burn, and Rick pulls me and Carl back. We go to the hang-over part. Carl shoots a walker as Rick yells for the person driving the RV to come over. We leap on top, and climb down the ladder. We run to the side, and blood spatters the windows of the RV. Someone screams-Jimmy. He's being eaten by the walkers. Carl pulls me away after Rick. "This way!" he hisses.
We run to the woods. "Faster!" Rick hisses. Carl pulls me along as I slow down. He knows how much I'm afraid of the woods at night. At the edge, I stop, pulling free of Carl's grip. Rick turns. "Isabelle, you have to come." He says. I glance back, and see Hershel shooting. I look at them. "No. You go. I'll meet you at Hershel." I say, and then run off before they can stop me. I pause long enough to see that Rick pulls Carl into the woods.
I doge walkers, turning their way and that. Finally, I reach Hershel. I turn, only to see Patricia get pulled down by walkers. They tear into her, and Lori pulls Beth free. They keep running. I fight back sobs. A gunshot behind us, and I turn again. Rick stands, gun aiming at a now dead walker. Carl stands behind him, and he hugs me. "I told you I'd get here." I mutter. "Where Lori." Rick asks. "I don't know what happened Rick, they just keep coming. It's like a plague; they're everywhere!" Hershel says. "I saw her get in the truck." I say. "We have to go now. Find mom and the others." Rick says, shooting a walker down. "It's my farm!" Hershel yells as Rick pulls him away. "Not anymore." Rick shouts back. Carl pulls me after them.
Rick hope into the drivers seat, Hershel gets in behind the shotgun, and Carl pushes me into the shotgun seat and then climbs in after me. Hershel looks back at the farm before turning to face forward. I don't realize that I am shaking violently until Carl pulls me close to him. I put my head on his chest and close my eyes. A loud crackling sound booms out, and I realize that it's the farm falling.
I open my eyes when I realize that we've stopped. I guess that I fell asleep. Everyone gets out. We are back at the highway, where Sophia first went missing. "Where's mom? You said that she'd be here." Carl says. "We've gotta go back for her." "Carl-" Rick begins. "No! Why are we running? What are you doing? It is mom. We need to get her! She might be stuck a mile away!" Carl yells. "Shh, shh!" Rick whispers. "We need to be quiet, alright?"Rick asks.
"Please." Carl says softly, looking at his dad. " It's mom." He says. "Carl-" Rick begins. "No." He says, slapping his dad's hand away and taking off. I sit at the front of the car, stretching my legs out, resting my hands on my lap. Rick looks over at me, and I look down.
-
A zombie staggers past, us crouched behind the car. For some reason, Rick won't let me use my knives. "Ok. Come." He hisses, and we move to the back. As it staggered out of earshot, Hershel whispered, "I don't know how much longer we can stay here." We looked around. "I'm not leaving without mom." Carl said. "So we're just gonna walk away? Not knowing if my wife, your-your girls are still out there, how do we live with that?" He asked. "You've only got one concern now, just one. Keeping your boy alive."
Ouch. So I suppose I was my own responsibility, then? make sense; everyone without a family took care of themselves. Rick knelt down in front of Carl. "Carl," he began. "It's not safe here. I'm sorry. We'll-" an engine cut him off. Well, several engines. We all looked to the road. Daryl and Carol on his motorcycle, the green car, and the blue truck. We all ran to them. Rick and Daryl clapped hands, Maggie and Beth ran to their father, Lori ran to Carl and Rick. I leaned against the car and smiled slightly.
"Where'd you find everyone?" Rick asks Daryl. Daryl nods to Glenn. "Found those guys tail lights zig zaggin' all over the road. Where's the rest of us?" he responded. "We're the only ones who made it so far." Rick replied. "Shane?" Lori asks. Rick shakes his head. "Andrea?" Glenn asks. "She saved me and then I lost her." Carol says. "We saw her go down." T Dog says. "Patricia?" Hershel asks. "They got her too. Took her right from me, she was holdin' my hand and-" she breaks off. We know what happened next.
"Jimmy?" Beth asks. "He was in the RV. He got overrun." Rick says. She starts crying. "You defiantly saw Andrea?" Carol asks. "There were walkers everywhere..." Lori trails off. "Did you see her?" Carol asks more forcefully. "I'ma go back." Daryl says, grabbing onto the motorcycle. "No." Rick says. "Ya can't just leave 'er." Daryl protests. "Well we don't even know if she's there." Lori counters. "She either is there or she isn't." Rick says. "She's somewhere else, or she's dead. There's no way to find her." He adds. "So we just aren't even going to look for her?" Glenn asks.
I notice the zombie coming back. "We've gotta keep moving. There's been walkers crawling all over here." Rick says. "I say head east." T Dog says. "Stay off the main roads, bigger the roads the more walkers like this asshole." Daryl adds, shooting an arrow into the skull of the zombie.
Once we've got what little supplies we have gathered up and put in the cars, we head off. Carl insists on me riding with them, and I don't fight. I feel empty inside, dead.
There's nothing left for us. Not here.
