Chapter 1
Isabelle
I was really starting to hate this car. We had been on the road for at least two hours. I sat between Carl and Sophia. Carol sat next to Sophia. Lori sat in the shotgun seat. Rick was driving. Sophia was gripping my hand.
My thoughts were back in the Atlanta camp. With Amy. I missed her so badly. I was snapped out of my thought when Lori spoke. "I was just thinking about our trip to the Grand Canyon with Carl." She said to Rick. He laughed. "I don't remember that." Carl spoke up. "No, you wouldn't. You were just a baby. Besides, we never made it past Fort Worth." She said.
"Mm, you got sick. I never knew a baby could throw up so much." Rick said. They laughed. "Ick." Carl said. "Yeah, ick. But then the doctor in Texas said that you'd live, we turned around and drove home." She said. "Well that sucks." "No. It was a good trip." Lori said. "The best." Rick said. "Can we go see it? The Grand Canyon? I'd like too." Carl asked. "I would too. Can we go?" Sophia asked. "We'd never go without you and your mom. You too, Isabelle. That's a promise." Rick said to us.
I fiddled with my necklace. It was a heart with the ends twisted around each other. Carl looked at my necklace. "Where'd you get that?" he asked. "From my parents." I said. I shoved my hand into my pocket, and pulled out a picture with one of those clear things on it.
"Here's a picture of us." I said. I held it up so that we could all see it. My mom was smiling down at me, her blond hair down around her shoulders. Her brown eyes had a slight twinkle to them. She was wearing a faded blue dress and slippers.
My dad hand his arm around her, his black hair groomed and his gray eyes happy. He wore blue jeans and a blue shirt with tennis shoes.
I was in the middle, laughing. My dirty blond hair was also down, and I wore a Falcons shirt, and a pair of blue jean shorts that were ripped. I was barefoot, and I was looking past the camera. My brown eyes were full of mischief. Both my parents were smiling down at me as I laughed. It was my favorite picture.
"Your mom is pretty." Sophia said. I nodded as I put the picture back up. Even though I knew that they were gone, I loved how Sophia acted as if they were still alive.
We slowed down behind the RV, finally stopping. We slowly navigate our way through the cars, everyone looked around. The RV stopped. We parked, and got out. People talked as I scanned the cars. I walked to the other side as everyone walked forward. I opened a car door, and found a tiny hand held pack. I opened it, feeling around. Then I grinned candy. Yum!
I went back to Sophia and Carl. We ate most of it quickly, leaving a small pack of skittles, and a snickers. And then Rick came through. "Get down!" he hissed. We ran for a car. Carl pulled me down under a car, forcing me to go first. I put a finger to my lips and turned to Sophia.
