Daryl | The ending of the story

Daryl and you were out recruiting while Aaron looked after Eric back at Alexandria.

Aaron brought in Daryl and his group a few weeks ago and immediately, Dianne noticed the similarities between the pair of you and so she assigned you the task of 'bringing Mr Dixon out of his shell', as she called it.

Dianne didn't like it when she couldn't figure out a member of the community and so she wanted someone to get to know every single person.

It threatened their trust of you, but you had no choice, in truth, you too were curious of Mr Dixon and so you had no trouble pushing and picking at him.

"There's some tracks here..." Daryl announced as he crouched down in the mud. You were both covered in mud and the sky was getting dark. "He must've gone this way.." Daryl stood up and began walking, but you just stayed still.

He looked back at you and frowned. "You coming?"

You glanced up at the sky and shook your head. "There's a storm coming, we have to find shelter, go back out tomorrow"

Daryl shook his head. "No, we can't! The rain will wash away the trail!"

"Daryl, we don't have spare clothes or medicine if one of us gets sick. I'm not taking that chance. We look after us, then we look for them" Your voice was stern and had a ring of authority.

Daryl growled and paced back and forth for a second. "They could be dead by the morning! We have to--"

"Daryl!" You yelled causing birds to flee their homes. "We look for shelter, don't forget who's in charge!" You shouted with a harsh tone. Daryl's face immediately showed you how angry he was as he huffed and walked past you, knocking your shoulder on purpose as he passed by.

"I thought you people looked after others..." He grumbled quietly as he passed by.

You sighed. You hated using your status to show your authority, but Daryl was difficult and no doubt you had hindered his trust.

The sky rumbled in the darkness of the night. Daryl had found a small abondonned gun store not far from the beaten track you were on.

Daryl was sat in front of the door with his legs up and his crossbow laying next to him.

You sighed and sat next to him. "Dianne offered me this job not long after I joined. I was a nurse before this. I helped people. I like to think I can help people by doing this job..."

He didn't reply. "You never tell anyone about what you did before this..." You sighed and watched as he looked down at the ground next to me.

There was some silence and you half expected him to ignore me as Iyou walked away, but as you turned around he spoke, "I didn't do nothin', followed my brother round like a dog, only family I had...Sometimes I helped him score drugs...didn't help people much" He admitted in a hushed voice.

A small smile appeared on your face, "Earlier--I-Well, I know your frustration but sometimes-sometimes we lose them, I like to think they find somewhere better but...well sometimes we don't find out the ending. Sometimes it's better that way" You left it at that, going to look around the counter, leaving him in peace.
