Chapter 2: Friends Dying

Preview of Season 1 Part 2

Episode 4

We were still waiting for Rick, Glenn, Daryl, and T-Dog to come back with Merle. Carl and I continued to hang out and get to know each other. Andrea and Amy went fishing and brought us many fish. Dale came down and let us know a little problem: Jim was digging holes in the ground. They were big enough to put bodies in. We were freaking out a little, but we went to confront him. He wasn't budging with his digging. He swung the shovel at Shane, but he pinned him down. He even explained how he lost his wife and two sons to the walkers. We had to tie him to a tree to make sure he wouldn't go back to digging. Turns out it was just sun stroke and he didn't know why he dug the holes. Carl and I continued to talk.

"So how did you like Ms. Meeler?" Carl asked.

"She was nice. She made me feel like I could do anything. But I don't think she knew something like this would happen," I chuckled.

"Yeah. But from what I've seen at school and heard from my dad, you're a fighter. Better than most of us would ever hope to be," Carl replied.

"Thanks. Oh and I got something in Atlanta for both of us," I responded.

I reached in my pocket and showed him the keychains. I held out both of them.

"Which one do you want?" I asked.

He looked and he got the one with my name.

"I wish I got to know you in school. And now that I know you, I don't want us to get separated. But if we do, we have each other's names as a reminder that we'll make it back to each other," Carl explained.

"That's sweet, Carl. Thank you," I answered.

We hugged and Lori and Carol called him, Sophia, and I to do some school work. Ugh! Jim apologized for scaring us and we even went to clean fish with Shane. I was hoping Rick and the others were gonna make it back by now. They've been gone a long time. I could overhear Andrea freaking out over finding something to wrap up Amy's birthday present. Sophia and Carol gave some fish and other things to Ed. We ate real good; those fish were delicious. Dale explained how a watch is given not to remember time, but to forget it. Not long after, we were attacked by walkers. Amy, Ed, and some other people were bitten or eaten. Lori got Carl and me to safety. Then Rick, Daryl, Glenn, and T-Dog showed up and the walkers were killed off one by one. We ran to Rick and hugged him, crying into his shoulders. Amy bled out and died. Andrea wailed into the night. When we saw the sight before us, Carl and I hugged each other and cried harder into Rick and Lori.

"I remember my dream now. Why I dug the holes," Jim said.

Episode 5

Rick went up to a hill to try to contact Morgan. The rest of us were shaken from last night. Andrea was the worst. She wouldn't leave Amy's side, even though she was dead. When Rick tried to talk to, Andrea pulled her gun out, this time with the safety off, and threatened to kill him. He walked away slowly. I was about to take a bullet for him if that was the case. The others were burning the walkers while the ones we loved were buried. Jacqui even let us know that Jim was bit. He was bitten on the torso. He just kept insisting that he was okay. The adults talked about Jim's fate while we kids were in the tents.

After that, Dale went to talk to Andrea. We realized it was Amy's birthday. She put the necklace she got for her around her neck.

While Daryl was putting holes in dead bodies' heads with a pickax, Carol did it to her husband.

Then Andrea saw that Amy turned. She told her that she was sorry for not being there for her. She said how she was there now and how she loved her, then she put a bullet in her head. We were planning a funeral for the ones we lost when Shane blamed Rick for the people that died. Jim wasn't getting any better. He was burning up, having hallucinations, and throwing up. We buried Amy and the others. Rick promised us that he wouldn't leave. We went away to let Rick and Lori talk.

"What do you think your parents are talking about?" I asked.

"I don't know. But whatever it is, it can't be good," Carl answered.

After Rick and Lori talked, they went in the RV to talk to Jim. Shane talked to Lori about how going to CDC was a bad idea. But it was the best chance we had, at least that's what I thought.

At daybreak, Rick tried to contact Morgan and Duane. When we were leaving, Morales and his family were leaving to go to Birmingham to be with their own people. We left the grounds and headed straight for the CDC. Carl and I sat in the back seat of the car, me resting my head on his shoulder and him resting his head on mine. The radiator hose in the RV went out and Jim was dying. We had to leave him behind. It was his decision, so we put him under a tree in the shade. It was sad to watch, but if it was what he wanted, then it was done. We got in our cars and drove off as Jim drew his last breath.

We made it to the CDC, but there were dead bodies everywhere. And man did it stink. Flies were buzzing all around them. Walkers were coming and it would not be safe to stay. Rick saw the camera move, but the others said he imagined it. As they were dragging him off, the doors opened. Have we found a safe haven for us?

Episode 6

We walked in weapons ready. A scientist came with a gun asking if any of us were infected. He let us stay if we did a blood test. He closed the doors and we went in an elevator. He made a joke, saying the only one he had to keep an eye on was Carl. I lightly nudged him and smirked as he did the same to me. Jenner, the scientist, ran the blood tests and we had a feast. Carl tried wine for the first time and hated it. I took his word for it, so I didn't bother trying it. After Rick proposed a toast to Jenner, Shane decided to be a Debby Downer and ask what started this apocalypse. He showed us the rooms and told us kids to enjoy the rec room, but to not plug any video games or anything that drew power. We were even told that the showers had hot water.

"Hot water?" Glenn asked with a smile.

"That's what the man said," T-Dog smirked.

We each took a shower and it felt like years since we've had one. We made it to our rooms and settled in. Rick went to talk to Jenner while Dale went to help Andrea since she was vomiting from the wine and said how there was nothing left. We were reading some good books until Lori and Carol said it was time to go to bed. We were heading to bed until I heard a slam. I listened to what was going on. Apparently, Shane was drunk, talking to Lori. He was harassing her, but explained what happened to Rick in the hospital. She screamed and I barged in and punched Shane in the face. I protected Lori until he left.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"You should've been getting ready for bed," she said.

"I was about to until I heard a door slam and you scream. You're like a second mother to me, Lori. No one is gonna hurt you and get away with it. And I know Rick and Carl would feel the same way," I explained.

"Thank you, sweetie," Lori replied, hugged me, and added, "Come on, let's get to bed."

We went to bed like it was the first night of many that we would be safe.

The next morning, a lot of people had hang overs and when Shane walked in, he had a black eye. They noticed and asked about it. Shane said he must've done it in his sleep then glared at me, saying it wasn't like him at all. I glared back, not really caring what he thought of me. Then Jenner showed us the process of how the disease works. It was TS-19's brain. Apparently, no one knew how it started or how to destroy it. Then Dale asked about a clock that was counting down from one hour. Jenner said the CDC ran on fuel. And when it runs out, decontamination happens. All the guys minus Jenner, Daryl, Carl, and Dale went to check it out. The air conditioner stopped where Lori, Carl, and I were. We started getting concerned so we confronted Jenner, and what he said was basically that this place would blow. We couldn't do anything especially since Jenner sealed us in. The air would set on fire and our lives would be over in a second and painlessly. The guys tried to get out as I hugged Carl and Lori. We cried as we held each other. Daryl and Shane threatened to kill Jenner if he didn't open the doors. Rick confronted Jenner why he stayed and Jenner said he made a promise to his wife. TS-19 was his wife. Jenner finally let us out and we ran to get our stuff. We had four in a half minutes left. I saw Jenner whisper something to Rick, so Lori got him. Jacqui and Andrea wanted to stay behind. Dale stayed to talk Andrea out of it. We ran with our stuff and the guys tried to bust the windows, but it wasn't breaking. Carol gave Rick the grenade he had when she washed his stuff. He pulled the pin and ran. The explosion broke the glass. We ran back to our cars, fighting the walkers.

"Wait, look!" Lori shouted.

We saw Andrea and Dale running towards us. As Rick counted down, he honked the horn as we all ducked down. The explosion happened and took Jacqui and Jenner with it. Andrea and Dale got in the cars and we left. Now where do we go?

A/N The CDC is gone. Atlanta is gone. What else can the group do? Only time will tell.
