Chapter 16: On the Road Again
Preview of Season 5 Part 3
Episode 9
After what happened with Beth, Rick told us that Noah knew a place with walls and protection. It was a long way off, but we had to try. We made it out of state to South Carolina, but we were heading for Virginia. We were five miles until we were there. I was asleep, but I felt fingers slowly stroke my cheek. I snuggled close to Carl. He woke me up with a kiss which I quickly joined in.
"Hey," he whispered when we parted.
"Hey," I returned, then added, "Where are the others?"
"Dad went with Noah, Tyreese, Michonne, and Glenn to see that place he talked about. They'll let us know in a little while," Carl explained.
"Okay. And I'm not complaining, but why'd you wake me up?" I asked.
"First off, you needed to know that. And secondly, I wanted to see your beautiful eyes," he answered.
I blushed then responded, "Well, your eyes are too. Ever since I first saw them, I couldn't help but get lost in them."
He smiled which I returned. We leaned in and kissed. I cupped his face while he held my waist. We heard a knock on our window and we looked to see Daryl smirking.
"Get a room you two!" he shouted.
I stuck my tongue out at him, which made Carl and him laugh. I turned back to Carl and we kept kissing for a little while longer. I fell asleep in his arms again and waited for the others to get back. When they did, Carl woke me up by lightly shaking me. Carol was taking us and Sasha somewhere. When we heard what happened, that Tyreese died, I cried like when Beth died. Carl held me as I sobbed into his chest during the funeral. Then I saw Sasha after it. I hugged her and she hugged back. Why do these things happen?
Episode 10
Both Maggie and Sasha weren't doing so good since they lost their siblings. They went out with Daryl for a while we sat on the road. No one found any food and we had 60 miles left until we would arrive at Washington. When we got back on the road, it didn't take long for us to run out of gas. We were on foot. I held Carl's hand as we walked. He gave Maggie a music box that might not have worked, but it was the thought that counted. I hugged her then I went back to holding Carl's hand. As we walked, I could see Sasha wanting to take on the small horde behind us. Daryl and Carol went out to hunt for a while. We rested on the road while Rick, Glenn, Michonne, and Abraham were letting walkers fall into the ravine until Sasha started killing them. They did too. When we started walking again, we found some cars up ahead. We went through them then sat on the side of the road while Daryl went out to hunt. I was given Judith so I hummed to her. Daryl came back, but we were all starving. Then dogs came up to us and before they could do anything, Sasha killed them. We built a fire and ate them. Even though I wouldn't eat dog meat, this time was an exception. I ate it and fed formula to Judith. Once we were done, we went back to walking and I was still holding her.
"You good?" Carl asked.
"Yeah," I assured.
"You want me to hold her?" he offered.
"Sure," I answered and gave her to Carl.
Since Tyreese died, Carl and I have been doing small talk. We would have some romantic moments, but right now, it's just hard. We came across bottles and jugs of water, untouched in the road. We couldn't drink it just in case someone put something in it. Then it started raining and we collected as much rain as we could. Carl put his hat on Judith to keep her dry. Daryl found an abandoned barn for us to take shelter in. They went in and cleared it quickly. We all made it inside and settled in.
When nightfall came, Carl and I were asleep with Judith in between us. I woke up for a minute and saw his peaceful state. I stroked my knuckles on his cheek and when he smiled in his sleep, my heart fluttered. Then I noticed everyone piling up against the door to keep a horde out. We joined them and this made me realize that we're strong now; we always have been.
The next morning, I woke up in Carl's arms. I felt like I was distant lately. I stroked his cheek, leaned in, and kissed him. He woke up and smiled. We got up and found a ladder. We went up to watch the sunrise. I rested my head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry," I said.
"What for?" Carl wondered.
"Since Tyreese's death, I've felt like I've been distant lately. I haven't been acting like the girlfriend you need me to be," I explained.
"You haven't been distant. We've just been on the road for a while. You don't need to be sorry for anything," he replied then kissed my temple.
I smiled as we continued watching the sunrise.
Episode 11
We got down and that's when Maggie and Sasha came back with this guy named Aaron. He wanted us to come to this community. He said there were walls that could protect us, but before he could finish talking about the place, Rick knocked him out.
"You read my mind," I said.
He chuckled then told us that people could be after us. Carl dumped his pack and found a flare gun. When he came to, Rick questioned him about how many people are out there. He admitted that he was the one who left the bottles and jugs of water. He even offered to drive us to this community. Who the heck comes across a group, asks them to join a community, they punch him in the face, and still offer a place for them to stay? Michonne, Glenn, Maggie, Abraham, and Rosita went to check it out while the the rest of us went outside. Rick stayed to look after Judith and watch Aaron to make sure he didn't pull anything.
"Do you think he's telling the truth?" Carl asked.
"I don't know. I mean, who continues to offer a place for an outside group to stay even after a punch to the face?" I explained.
"You make a good point. You think he was feeding us bull?" he wondered.
"Maybe," I answered.
When we went back, Michonne said that we could go to this community and Rick agreed. We decided to go, but when we decided to take a different route other than what Aaron suggested, he said it was a bad idea because it wasn't cleared. We went to sleep for a while. Then we followed Rick, Michonne, Glenn, and Aaron in the RV. Next thing you know, we're plowing down walkers and it was hectic. We got separated from them, but we saw a flare and headed straight for it. We made it to this building and when Daryl tapped on the door, we went outside and saw Rick and the others. Carl and I hugged Rick and we all went inside. We met this guy named Eric, who turned out to be Aaron's boyfriend. Aaron thanked us for saving Eric and said the debt would be paid when we get to his community called Alexandria. We spent the night in the building and in the morning, we were off. We were stalled for a little while, but thanks to Glenn, we put a new battery in the RV. Rick went in the woods somewhere real quick and came back. We stopped in front of the gates, ready to begin a new chapter in our lives.
That was our whole journey up to Alexandria. We made it; we could definitely start a new life here as long as we didn't forget the world we lived in everyday.
Episode 12
We walked into Alexandria, but Carl and I saw a girl in an abandoned house just outside the gates, but she was gone in a flash. We had to hand over our weapons, but we didn't know if we were staying. We were told to talk to the woman in charge named Deanna. This place looked like nothing happened. It was untouched. Something tells me that the majority of the people have never been out there. Deanna talked to all of us and filmed our conversations with her.
"This place really looks too good to be true," I said.
"Like Terminus?" Carl replied.
"No. At least this community is sane. But how can this place last this long without knowing the danger outside?" I explained.
"It makes sense. Maybe on occasion, we can go on a run from time to time. We don't need to feel weak," Carl suggested.
"That sounds good," I agreed.
We turned our weapons over and were assigned houses. Rick, Carl, Judith, and I got one house. We checked it out and it felt weird to be in a place where it felt like life still went on. I got a hot shower after Rick and it felt so good. I shaved my legs, fixed my hair, and got dressed into skinny jeans, a red crop top, a black leather vest, and combat boots. I went back and hid when I saw Rick talking with this woman named Jesse. She gave him a haircut. He also shaved his beard off. I swear he looked like who he was when we first met. I went outside to see Carl and when he saw me, his jaw dropped. I giggled. My hair was long and straight again and it felt good to let my fingers run through them. We looked around the place and went upstairs. Just in case, Carl pulled out his knife and when he opened the door, it was an empty attic with a few things here and there. That night, the whole group was in our house just in case. Carl and I sat by each other at the table.
"Are you enjoying that comic?" I asked.
"Yeah. Come here," he ushered.
I got up and sat in his lap. I kissed him and leaned on his shoulder as we read his comic. Deanna came by and told us that we were given jobs. Since they've been watching us, I suspected that mine would be nursing.
The next morning, Carl and I took Judith for a walk with her in a stroller. We stopped to see this old couple who were as sweet as could be. They played with Judith and I smiled. Rick called us over and we gave Judith to Rick. We met Jesse's son, Ron and he introduced us to Mikey and Enid. There was apparently a school here and when they offered for us to do things we used to do, it felt overwhelming. Carl and the boys played with video games as I tried to talk to Enid. She wouldn't budge. I gave up and kissed Carl's cheek. It distracted him to a point where he lost a game. I laughed and so did the others. We went back to our house and Rick asked us how it went. Carl answered that the people were weak even though we liked it here. We all slept under the same roof again. Carl and I were still awake, but we stayed silent as we just enjoyed each other's company.
The next morning, we saw Enid climb the wall. She seemed to be the only strong person here if she did this everyday since she must know the danger out there. We followed her, until we couldn't see her anymore. We just walked for a while.
"You really like this place?" I wondered.
"Yeah. But this is nice. I didn't get a chance to tell you, but you look beautiful. I mean, you're beautiful all the time," he said.
"And you're always handsome," I smiled.
We found Rick and walkers were coming our way. He told us to get ready, they took out their knives out while I got my machete and killed all of them.
"Just like old times," I joked.
They chuckled and we headed back. We came back to see Daryl and Glenn fighting Aden and Nicholas. Rick stopped it and Deanna said we were a part of this community. She gave Rick and Michonne jobs to be cops. Enid came back but she didn't say anything. Deanna gave me the job of being a nurse. Rick got dressed in his new police uniform while I got in light blue scrubs and went down to show the group. They saw us and smiled. Carl got up and kissed me. The group went to their own houses while Rick, Carl, Judith, and I stayed. This place will not make us weak and Rick promised us that. Carl and I shared a bedroom and when we walked in, I started undressing while he was turned around.
"You know, with you being a nurse, I just might injure myself everyday to see you," Carl joked.
I giggled and replied, "You'll still see me; I don't work everyday. But it would be adorable if you did that for me."
I was in my pjs which were a blue tank top and really short black shorts. I put my hair in a loose bun. Carl was in his pjs too and we got in bed. We made out for a while then just held each other.
"Good night, Sheriff," I whispered.
"Night, Nurse Jamie," he whispered back and we were out like a light.
This community is good, but like Rick said, we can't let it make us weak.

A/N The group is almost at home in this community. What could happen to Alexandria though if they faced a threat?
