Chapter 10: A New Life in the Prison
Preview of Season 4 Part 1
Episode 1
It's been 30 days since we brought the people of Woodbury to the prison. We've grown so many crops and even had a corral with pigs. We really made this a beautiful community that's better than Woodbury hands down. Carl and I have grown closer and he's out of his little phase. We went to see Rick with the pigs. We asked about Violet since she looked tired and sick but we were told not to name them since they were now food. We went back to the others.
Some people were killing the walkers that were piling up against the fence. It was worse than last month. That worried me a little, but I tried not to think about it. Then we heard Michonne was coming back. We ran to the fence and opened the gate while Michonne came in on horseback. She gave Carl some comics, me some medical books, and Rick a razor. They talked about how they needed to check the snares. Carl and I went to hang with the kids after we put Michonne's horse back in the stable.
"You wanted to go check the snares, didn't you?" I asked.
"Yeah. Hanging with the kids here, it's weird because they don't know the dangers out there. You're the only normal-ish one here," Carl said.
"Normal-ish?" I raised my brow.
"Let's face it. You're not entirely sane," he chuckled.
"Oh, I'll show you who's 'not entirely sane'," I replied, smiling.
I chased him until I tackled him and pinned him to the ground; I've gotten stronger nowadays. When we looked into each other's eyes, it's like time stopped. I wanted to kiss him, but I denied it for certain reasons. I got up and helped him up. We got Patrick and went to hang out with the kids. When we got there, they were naming the walkers. Carl pointed out how they were dead and that they're not people. But Lizzie and Meeka said they were, just different. We won the argument and they left to go read.
"Those kids don't know what they're talking about," I replied.
"I told you. They don't know the world we live in everyday," Carl said.
"I believed you, but seriously," I responded.
"I understand what you both are trying to do. But they're just kids. Give them time to fully adapt to this world," Patrick suggested.
"No offense, Patrick, but we can't all be sane in this world," I replied, elbowing Carl in the side.
We chuckled then I kissed his cheek and left. We still haven't had our first kiss yet; I guess we're just waiting. We're still best friends too. People who know about Carl and me are wondering when we will ever get together, but I don't know.
Rick was out checking the snares while Michonne and Daryl took a couple of others for a run. Rick told us that we have three questions that we need to ask if we came across new people. We ask how many walkers they've killed, how many people they've killed, and why. As I was walking I saw Patrick head to the library with Carl sneaking behind him. I went behind him when he was near the doors. I tapped his shoulder and he swung his arm at me in defense but I dodged it.
"Carl, it's me. Calm down," I chuckled.
"Sorry. I wanted to sneak in and see what the kids are doing," he explained.
"I was planning on that myself. Let's do it," I replied.
We snuck in and listened a little bit, but when Patrick left since he was feeling sick, we left before we got caught. Carol was teaching the kids how to fight and kill with knives. The rest of the day was pretty boring. But I just had a gut feeling that something bad was going to happen.
Episode 2
The night was tiring. I went to my cell, which I still share with Carl. I read the medical books that Michonne got me and I read about some things that Hershel taught me and some things he didn't teach me yet.
The next morning I ended up falling asleep with the book on my head. Rick woke me and Carl up to do some more chores and stuff. We saw Michonne heading out and she asked if we had any requests, then she left. We held buckets while Rick put worms and stuff in them. We fed them to the pigs. Carl asked if he could have his gun back, but then we heard gunfire and screams. We helped Michonne back in, but she hurt her leg while fending off walkers. We went back inside and helped Michonne back in. When Rick came out, we hugged him. We found out that it was a disease that people were dying from. I helped with Michonne's leg since it was sprained while Beth played with Judith. She explained how Carl and Maggie shouldn't have helped, but I said she was wrong. Judith started crying and Beth took her away for a while.
"Try to keep your leg elevated for a little while," I replied.
Then when we heard Beth singing, Judith threw up on her. She handed Judith to me while she got cleaned up. I comforted Judith as best as I could.
"You wanna hold her?" I asked.
"I'm not really good with babies," Michonne said.
"I don't believe that," I replied, handing Judith to her.
She held her then I noticed that when she looked at her, she cried and hugged her. I started tearing up at the sight. I heard that Rick and Carl had to stay away from Judith so she doesn't get sick, which made me feel bad. They're her family and she deserves them in her life. I don't know if I need to stay away from them too or not, but I didn't want to. Carl is everything to me and it would kill me to do so. I love him so much and there's nothing I wouldn't do to keep him safe.
Episode 3
This virus has been spreading so much, we've had to separate the most exposed from the healthy people. I helped best I could with coming up with a cure, but so far nothing. I heard that someone killed Karen and David and burned their bodies. Tyreese was really mad since he and Karen were together and all. He beat up Rick and Daryl, then Rick beat him to a pulp so much that he sprained his hand.
Twelve people were killed, from either the disease or how Karen and David died. The others who were getting sick still weren't getting better. Even Sasha got sick.
Carl was going to be stuck in quarantine and I hated it. I went in my cell to see him packing and Rick showed up not too long after. He and Rick talked for a minute then he left.
"Rick, do you need me down there?" I asked.
"No. You haven't been exposed. Just try to help anyone that might need it here," he answered.
"It's gonna be a pain to stay away from Carl though," I stated.
"I know you wanna be there for him, but you're just gonna have to stay here and see what you can do for the people here," Rick said, placing his hand on my shoulder.
"Alright, I'll do everything I can," I promised.
Later, we found out that Glenn had the disease. I went to my cell and read about what this could be. There has to be something that can cure this. I looked at all the symptoms for each disease until I thought I found a match. I found a disease called zoonotic. I looked through my notes and Hershel had taught me about that disease. I knew the guys were getting some antibiotics, so hopefully they'll get something. The only problem was we didn't know what type of zoonotic disease it was, which means we don't know what treatment to give the infected. This was a start, but I need to know more.
Episode 4
Rick had to go on a run with Carol, so I had to find someone to tell. I went to one of the glass doors. I saw Carl, so I knocked on it. He looked and when he saw me, he smiled and headed toward it.
"Hey, how are you doing?" he asked.
"I should be asking you that, but to be honest, it sucks being apart from my best friend," I answered.
He chuckled then stated, "It really does. So what's up?"
"I think I've found the disease that's killing everyone," I said.
"What is it?" Carl wondered.
"It's called zoonotic. It came from the pigs. But there's one problem: there are different types of it. So I don't know what treatment to give," I explained.
He sighed then said, "It's a start."
"Yeah. And there's one more thing I need to tell you," I replied, putting my hand on the glass, he did the same to where it looked like his was touching mine, then explained, "When we went into town with Rick and Michonne where y'all met Morgan, I talked with Rick about how I was an orphan and he mentioned that he knew how I felt about you. And what I feel for you is...I love you."
He smiled through tears as I did the same.
"I have for the longest time. I just didn't know how to tell you because of how people have lost ones they loved and I was afraid of that happening. I know you said I'll never lose you, but I'm afraid you'll lose me," I added.
"Jamie, you don't need to worry about that. That'll never happen because I love you too. And I promise when I get out of here, you'll be the first person I hug and I'll never let you go. Okay?" Carl said.
I nodded my head, then he reached into his pocket and showed me the keychain I got him back in Atlanta. I got mine out of my pocket and held mine to where he could see it.
"Remember, you're a fighter. You always have been," Carl told me.
"You are too. I promise that you'll come out of there and we can be together," I responded, kissed my hand, placed it on the glass, and our foreheads touched the glass.
"I love you, Jamie," Carl whispered.
"I love you too, Carl," I whispered back.
I left, happy that Carl told me how he felt about me. I didn't have to worry about that part anymore. Now I have to help find a cure so I can really be with him.
The others still haven't made it back, but I continued looking for a cure. I wasn't going to stop until I could help everyone who is still sick or quarantined.
