Chapter 13. The Guardian

AHHHH

So...how'd that last chapter go? hehe

Sorry it was so short.

Pic is Morgiana and her actress is Mary Kate Olsen in the role of Beastly as the witch

Demetri's POV***

I drove back to my building, the taste of Venus on both my fingers and my mouth. I couldn't get her image out of my head.

The way her hungry eyes gazed into my own, meeting my own emotion as hers. She was nearly crumbling at my touch, and despite the fact she barely touched me, the look in her eyes and the sound of her moans was enough to get me riled up.

I closed my eyes, needing her to get out of my head, but she was invading every single thought I had. She was intoxicating, and I wasn't sure how I'd felt about it.

I didn't quite do relationships. I had far too many stresses to worry about than trying to please women and avoid fights over what to wear for dinner. I'd tried girlfriends, under my mother's watching eye, but each one never worked because I had far too many obligations.

I could really fuck things up with Venus, and though I blamed it on the "eternal soul mates bond" I didn't want to see her hurt. I had a feeling she'd been hurt in the past, but hadn't we all in some defining way?

I needed to clear my head.

As soon as I got to the building, I hopped out of my SUV and made my way in. I pass the young, blonde accountant, Cindy or something, I don't remember her name; I don't really care enough to. She gives me a friendly smile, one I don't return as I make my way to the elevator.

As I step in, I catch a familiar scent. The doors open and I see the one and only Morgiana along with Reese. The two seemed to be engaged in an argument of the sorta as I step in. Reese continues to bite on his lip ring while Morgiana crosses her arms and plays with her blonde hair.

The door closes, and leaves the three of us, an Alpha and two Peacekeepers, trapped inside.

"Morgiana, Reese," I regarded them each. Morgiana grins, her dark lips curling up. "Demetri, time doesn't seem to have an affect on you," She adds. She's clad in a skin tight black dress with a small cape thing attached to the back, draping to the floor around her stilettos. She gives me a playful wink with her heavily caked on eye-shadowed blue eyes.

I ignore her. I know there's nothing else you can do when it comes to Morgiana. She's an impressive Peacekeeper; one not to be trifled with. Reese's abilities were beyond me, for he seldom showed me.

"We've come to discuss some things with both you and Landon Silver," Reece said, sighing. I heard Morgiana chuckle only to add to my annoyance. I felt my skin crawl at the mention of my rival's name.

"Is he here?" I growled.

"Oh, do tell him Reese," The goth Peacekeeper cooed in his ears, making him recoil. Of course he would, now that his soulmate was found. I felt my blood begin to boil. I was an Alpha, a leader. I didn't tolerate the fact of not knowing things - especially in my own territory - about others before me.

The elevator let out a sing song noise, and the doors opened to reveal my office floor.

I stepped out, the two following me. "Is it safe to assume he's here?" I grunted.

"Yes. And we've come to discuss his perimeter breach as I'm also sure you can assume we would do," Reece added. My wolf began to pace at the mention. Of course I knew the Peacekeepers would get themselves involved, something they excelled at.

"I don't have time for games," I reminded them, walking down the hallway. I could feel the different waves in the air, and I knew Landon was here. I felt a pull to shift right here, right now, and rip his head off. But I wasn't an amateur, or a fool. The two of us were Alpha's, and it didn't help that both of our beings compelled us to dominate. The fact we were both in the same building, soon to be room, could lead to complete and utter chaos should we lose control.

I stopped at my door after walking to the end of the hallway, and opened it, preparing to see him. He was more snake than he was wolf, one not to be trusted.

I opened the door, and let myself, followed by the two, inside. His putrid scent filled my nose, causing me to scowl. I had to stay composed. I took a deep breath and there he was, standing with a smug grin on his face in the corner.

"You really are a wander to us all Demetri," Landon said with narrowed eyes. The door closed behind me on its own, no thanks to Morgiana or Reese. I raised a brow at him, and saw a few more lurkers in my office.

Peacekeepers.

[Why are there so many here?] My wolf began to interrogate the situation. There were now 6 in my building, something that was almost rare. Peacekeepers were strong enough to handle things individually, they didn't need to come together.

"Demetri Williams and Landon Silver." I recognized the voice. I turned to see a man by the name of Harry. His face reflected his years, and yet his power never faltered no matter how old he he seemed. His dark hair was fading to gray in the front as he forced it to slick back. Like everyone in the room, he was dressed in fancy clothes - despite Morgiana's taste. The other Peacekeepers were merely peons who held no authority like Harry, Reese, or Morgiana.

I ripped my eyes away from the scum in my office, and faced the old man.

"There was a complaint of a territorial breach, as I know you are each aware of. Before the two of you jump at each others throats like how I can assume you both would, the complaint came from another source."

I raised my eyebrows. It was clear Landon believed one of my pack had gone and let the wolf out of the forest, mind the pun. And though it would seem true enough, none of them had to. Whenever there was even a small disagreement, somehow word always got out to the Peacekeepers, and they do whatever they deem worthy to "solve" the problem. You could be locked in a room, and the whole world knew what you did before your own kin it seemed.

"And who would do that?" Landon asked as though he was bored. He walked around my desk, picking up a small frame of my mother. I growled at him, causing him to smirk and roll his eyes before setting it down.

"Unfortunately, that information stays within our ranks, not yours," Harry added, with a genuine smile. I growled, followed by Landon. Harry was just as slimy as the other Peacekeepers, though he never seemed to show off that certain trait.

"How could it not have been one of Demetri's dogs?" Landon barked, earning the attention of the Peacekeepers. I turned towards him, trying to stay calm. My pack wasn't to be disrespected by the likes of Landon Silver. I held my composure to the best of my ability.

"My pack isn't filth, at least I can say that about mine," I retorted. Before he could argue, I felt my breath escape me, Landon too. My eyes widened uncontrollably, and I fell to the ground. I cupped my throat, feeling as though there was a vacuum cleaner being stuffed down my throat. As oxygen refused to enter either of our lungs, small growls and raspy coughs left our parted lips.

Landon let out a pathetic whine as I tried to cough.  Suddenly, the pain sopped and I took a deep breath. I forced air into my mouth and gained my composure just as easily as I had lost it. I hated being humiliated in my own office. My own territory.

"Morgiana, was that really necessary?" Harry asked her as she stepped over me. She giggled.

"Of course not." She lacked the feeling of remorse in her voice.

I got up, nearly stumbling as I forced mass amounts of air into my lungs again. I rubbed my throat while silently loathing the fact that the Peacekeepers had such abilities to keep us in cages. I was an Alpha. I wasn't to be controlled.

"Should either of you come into contact with the Guardian, which I'm very well aware you each have, our tolerance of your skirmishes begin to annoy us," Harry continued as though we weren't just suffocating back there.

"Therefor," Reece took over, sounding a bit more gentle yet stern at the same time. "Another conflict whether it be of territory breaches, or her, are now to be considered crimes against the Federal Council."

"Weren't they always?" Landon asked with a frown.

"Things have changed. The Prophecy is unraveling faster than the Peacekeepers anticipated," Reece added. "Which also means," Morgiana cut in, "your sad little battles of who has the bigger dick in this town are either about to intensify or come to a standstill. Either way, Reece and I will now be keeping a closer watch on both packs. Should we see one more slip up that will affect the Guardian's choices, you'll be sent to me personally."

I could have growled at her, but I kept it hidden. Morgiana was now the head of punishment? That would only worsen things and everyone knew it. There was something the Peacekeepers weren't telling us. Landon and I both have been competing for the Guardian. Whoever's side should she choose, that pack will have the ultimate reign on not only this town, but rumors of an unknown world. Of course, that's a rumor.

"That's ridiculous," Landon spit. Morgiana grinned as if ready to use her power again. "Let us not forget, Landon Silver," Harry began to walk towards him, authority leaking off him as he did so. "That should this prophecy come true, whom she picks must be according to her own will. And if one of you refuse to submit, well . . . you know what's coming for you."

I rubbed my temples as they all left, even Landon. The only ones who stayed were Reese, and then Allistare who I'd called in a few minutes after the freakshows had left. My wolf instantly relaxed as soon as Landon and the Peacekeepers left, minus Reese.

"I take it the meeting went well," Allistaire said as he lazily sat in my chair across from my desk. I rolled my eyes at him.

"Better than it could have gone," Reese answered for me. "I don't know what you guys expect, honestly. Silver Moon and my pack have been trying to sway the Guardian in every way we can, so what changed?" I asked.

Allistaire folded his hands and nodded, waiting for Reese to answer. He bit his lip ring and sighed. "The skirmishes are beginning to affect her. The complaint was from neither of your packs, but that doesn't change the fact that this person knows the girl, and should she decide to blab her mouth about who and what she is, this could ruin everything."

"I still don't understand the prophecy in full," Allistaire groaned.

"Simple. The one born of mistrust and greed shall henceforth go on living till her 16th year, should she flee to the town of two Alpha's and those who keep the peace. In time, she'll find where she belongs, taking a side, and her power."

"And that's only the first part of it," I said with a frown. I could feel confusion in Allistaire's eyes.

"And how does this affect the two packs?" Allistaire asked once more.

"The Guardian will protect the pack she vouches her allegiance to. She isn't the only one in the prophecy said to have immense power. More power than Peacekeeprs," I threw in my own two cents.

"And who else is there to worry about?" He asked. Reese rubbed the back of his neck.

"We're not sure. The prophecy was named Yin Yang. It's another of section of the prophecy. The one born of light and love shall grow in grace until her 19th year. She too will flee to an unknown land, and in time will-"

"I get it, I get it. So, one good egg and one bad. So what, they each pick a pack to protect?"

"Somewhat," I muttered. "The prophecy can only end in one of two ways. One, the two Guardians of each pack will fight - to the death most likely - to decide on which pack will dominate the town. Or two, the packs will be involved in the fight and it will be a much more bloody battle."

"All this for a small town?"

"That's what we thought. Then we realized there are still hidden meanings in the prophecy. Of course, there are rumors too. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there," I said.

"Which one is the good or bad?"

"I'm trying to figure that out with the Guardian we have in town. From what I can see, she seems light. But who knows?" I said with a groan.

"What's her name? The Guardian?"

"Venus. Venus Skaarsgaurd."

Venus's POV***

The rest of the night was exhausting, and over the next two days, I spent my time at home with my nose in a book, or at the diner where I did the same.

I eventually apologized to Brooke even though I was certain I wasn't super remorseful.  Will gave me a disgruntled look, and Moira welcomed me with a high five.

Working had proved difficult. My mind was filled with images of a few nights ago where Demetri had me in the back, pinning me against the wall. Every time I even walked near the back door, my mind flew back to that instant where I had felt euphoric.

Every time I had opened my eyes after blinking, the visions of him and I came back. He had been consuming my thoughts for the past few days and I wasn't sure how I had felt. I knew I was confused. That much was I was sure of. What did this mean for me and Demetri? What were we? What did he want from me? What did he expect me to do now? Call him my boyfriend?

It almost seemed too soon for me to be calling him that, despite our most intimate moments. Would there be more of them? Did I want more of them? My answer to that last one was hell yes. I knew it was dirty of me to think but, how could I not want more? I can't recall ever feeling that way with someone, let alone the fact someone could make me feel that way.

I closed my eyes, remembering the fire spreading through my body that only he could diminish with water. The way he murmured my name against my skin, sending me over the edge.

"Are you serious? Again? Hello in there?"

I shook my head.

"Are you sick or something?" Will asked me with a raised eyebrow. I flattened my palms against my work uniform, feeling myself blush. Hopefully Will didn't catch it. I could only imagine the horror if Will knew what I had been thinking about.

"Sorry," I muttered, filling up the soda cup with some Sprite. Will watched me, unimpressed by my answer.

"Honestly, if you're sick you should go home. That was one hell of a shift a few days ago," He said. You have no idea. My subconscious made herself known in my head. I frowned.

"I'm not sick. Just tired is all."

I finished pouring the soda in the cup and began to make my way out of the back and towards my table. I set the soda down for the young woman and took out my notepad.

"Are you guys all set to order?" I asked. The woman smiled politely and looked over at her husband.

"Yep."

The two told me their orders, which I promised I'd have out soon. I went back into the kitchen, running into Brooke.

"Oh!" She plopped back a few feet.

"Sorry, I didn't see you there," I said, bending down to help her up. She smiled lightly at me.

"It's no worries, honestly," She said with a smile. I pulled her up, watching as she fixed her uniform, and then her hair which was in a cute side braid. My hand instinctively went to my own shoddy braid, noticing she could pull it off much better than I could.

"I um, I'm having a small get together at my house this weekend on Saturday night. Marge said she's closing up early Saturday, says someone she knows is having a birthday or something. Anyways, Will is coming, and I was wondering if you and Moira would like to come?" She seemed a bit nervous, seeing as she was rambling on and on. I raised a brow. This girl had to be at least 16 or something; what was her version of a party? Teacups and triangular hats with balls of fuzz on top?

"Er, what's it for?" I asked her.

"It's my birthday coming up. I'll be 18."

Oh, 18, okay, so she was a teenager.

"Oh yeah sure, I'll check with Moira if she can come."

Though I'd doubt she would want to. "I know she's not my biggest fan and I'm not hers, but it's not going to be a fancy 'bring-presents' kind of thing. Just like a little hang out and a few friends of mine will come. Some are older like you guys so hopefully you guys won't feel like you're at a little kids party," She added with a slight chuckle. I forced a smile. How could I say no? If I rejected her, it'd look like I didn't like her and I already snapped at her once for no reason.

"Sure."

She smiled with a giddy thumbs up gesture before walking away to serve her table.

"What did Little Miss Sunshine want?" Moira asked, walking by with cups to fill up.

"She invited us to a birthday party, minus the birthday factor apparently," I replied.

Moira pointed her finger towards her open mouth and lolled her eyes backwards as if to gag. "I'd rather watch paint dry."

"Be nice. I don't want to go alone to this thing."

"Will ought to be there, right?"

"Well yeah but still."

"Awe, are you jealous that he's got a crush on the new girl?" Moira raised her eyebrows up and down as a smirk pulled at her ruby red lips. "Of course not." I rolled my eyes.

"Oh? Getting defensive are we?"

"Go serve your table you gutterpunk," I said with nonchalance. She laughed before walking off. Me? Jealous of the new girl and Will? They were just friends, as were me and Will. There was nothing to be jealous of.

I continued on with work for the rest of the day, the thoughts of Demetri still invading my mind each time I passed the back door.
