Quack, Quack

Requested by CrazyKitty223

The gentle wind rolled through the gardens, rustling the leaves in an unsung ballad. Bees buzzed through the bushes and branches collecting pollen to their hearts content. A lone hummingbird busied itself suckling nectar from the nearby honeysuckles before floating of to a new flower.

High pitched quacks responded to the loud quacks of a mother duck who lead her ducklings to the edge of one of the few ponds in the gardens. She waddled into the water, her tail shaking and her eyes trained onto her offspring. Each of the little yellow ducklings hesitated, none of the six ever venturing into the water before. The mother duck gave a reassuring quack to her ducklings, soothing their woes. One by one the ducklings took their leaps of faith, each giving a delighted quack as the swam up to their mother.

From the swing attached to on of the stronger trees sat one of the queens, who watched the mother duck with a gentle smile on her face. She had always enjoyed nature, there was a beauty in the simplicity yet complex way that life had continued. Everything from the graceful gentle hunchbacks to the small yet swift hummingbird was beautiful in her eyes. She detached herself from the swing moving closer to the pond to watch the ducklings take their first swim.

She sat at the edge of the pond, watching in fascination as the ducklings chased each other with gusto while a always watchful mother duck close by. The queen smiled raising to her feet, dusting off her hands from the dirt on her jeans and ran back into the castle to retrieve a box for her idea. She ran through the halls she had committed to memory, not caring if her lungs burned with need for air.

She rounded a corner snatching a cardboard box from the hall and headed to the kitchen, in the process running past her husband who was about to greet her. Caius lowered his hand slowly, watching as his wife ran passed with a look that lead him to believe she was in the middle of some half-witted idea of hers.

Without a word, Caius followed her back to the gardens where he saw her laying out sliced grapes from her bowl, creating a trail back to the box. The king watched as his beloved lifted  two little ducklings and gently placed them into the box before going back for the others. Caius sighed, moving closer and removing the distressed ducklings.

"Y/n, what on Earth are you doing?" The king asked as his mate turned with another ducklings in her arms.

"Um...." Y/n said, stalling for time, "it's not what it looks like."

"It looks like you're kidnapping ducklings."

Y/n scoffed, "Kidnapping is such a harsh word."

"Y/n," Caius tsked.

"Can I keep them?" She begged, "Please?"

Caius shook his head and gently taking the squirming duck from his mates hands and placed it back on the ground for it to scurry back to it's mother and siblings.

"I wanna keep them," she begged, putting on her best pout.

Caius sighed, "My dearest, they are wild animals-"

"-so were wolves but now look they're man's best friend!"

Caius stared at the woman who he loved more than life itself, flabbergasted by her way of thinking.

"I'll clean up after them!" Y/n defended, moving to capture one of the ducklings who ate one of the grapes, "I'll train them! And, and I'll-"

"-No."

"-But..."

"No," Caius said, his voice harsh, "you already have two dogs, one hairless cat, three parakeets, and one turtle. You don't need anymore pets."

Y/n pouted, kicking the cardboard box over. Caius sighed at the sight of his mate upset. "Would a chinchilla be better than a duck?"

Y/n light up and gave a delighted squeal before hugging her husband. "I get to name him Fred!"

Caius chuckled as he guided his mate back to the castle as she rambled on about new names for her newest pet. As they walked, Caius worked up excuses so his fellow kings could understand why he promised Y/n another pet.
