Part V: The New Ally
Bad continued to follow the human, hiding behind trees when it looked his way. He was pretty sure that it had seen him on multiple occasions, but if it had, it didn't react.
This continued for a few more hours, before a small village came into view. The human walked directly into it, bit Bad help back. He wasn't sure how the humans would react to his presence, and it was better safe than sorry.
Instead, he went around, circling the village and waiting for the human to come out.
"Hey!" Bad turned around to see a group of three young humans, weapons drawn. He backed up, eyeing the weapons warily.
"Why are you so close to the village, monster!" Bad winced at being called a monster, backing up again. His back hit a tree, and the humans started advancing. He tried to dart to the side, but one of the humans blocked his path.
Bad started to panic as the humans fanned out around him, blocking his exits.
"Where do you think you're going?" The lead human snarled as he tried to run, but was blocked off by a sword.
The human's closed in around him, and he fully panicked when one of them made a move to grab his arm.
"We got you no-mmph!" The lead human was intruppted by a face full of void-black feathers as Bad released the spell hiding his wings. He going them outwards, knocking over the humans, before beating them down and thrusting himself upwards.
He heard angry yells beneath him as he broke through the treetops, orienting himself to fly right above them. He flew closer to the village, landing in a tree about ten meters away from the village. He hopped a few trees closer, using his wings to cover the large gaps.
He could see most of the village from his spot in the tree, and settled down for a long wait.
Eventually, the light in the sky disappeared, bathing the landscape in darkness. He yawned widely, trying to stay awake as the light in the village flickered off, one by one. He yawned again, blinking against the exhaustion that clouded his mind. Eventually, his eyelids closed, and he fell into a deep sleep.
Light pounded at Bad's eyelids, slowly waking him up from his slumber. He threw his arm over his eyes, groaning. Eventually, he opened his eyes, blinking rapidly at the bright light. A light breeze brushed his skin, and leaves pattered at his horns.
He sat up, stretching and rubbing his glowing white eyes. There were a few people scurrying around the streets of the town, but he imagined it was too early in the morning for most people to be out.
Bad snapped back to attention as he remembered the events of the previous night. Oh dear, he must have fallen asleep.
He moved to a slightly lower branch, trying to see if the human had left the town yet. He squinted at the town, trying to find any trace of the human.
To his relief, the human hadn't left yet. He saw it talking to another human outside a large building, handing the other human something before turning and walking away.
Bad used his magic to hide his wings again before dropping out of the tree, hurrying around the edge of the town.
He saw the human exit the town's border, watching as it continued on a wide dirt road.
Bad moved just inside the trees on the edge on the road, wary of the other humans on the path.
He followed the human for another half hour or so, staying inside the line of trees and trying to be as silent as possible. He went mostly unnoticed, although a dog started barking at him once or twice. Thankfully, the dog's owners ignored it most of the time.
After a half hour or so, the human split off the main path and continued onto a small, unpopulated one. Bad moved closer to the path, just on the edge of it. They continued for another hour or so before the human looked over his shoulder and noticed Bad.
"Wow, you're still here?" He asked, looking surprised. Bad nodded in response, and the human shrugged. "Well, I'm not sure why, but okay I guess."
He kept following the human as he continued on through the forest. Bad noticed that he had avoided more populated paths, even when it was obviously the smart choice to do so.
They came to a small area filled with some strange clearish-blue substance about four hours later, the human sitting down on the small beach next to it. Bad walked to the edge of the area, crouching down and staring at it. After a few minutes, he cautiously dipped his hand in it, watching as it lapped against his wrist. It was cold and slippery, moving around his hand with ease.
Suddenly, something silver flashed in the water and he felt something small and slimy bop his hand. He instinctively jumped back, yanking his hand out of the liquid and pulling it to his chest. Bad heard a bark of laughter behind him, and turned to see the human doubled over in laughter.
"What was that!? Have you never seen water before?" He wheezed, still clutching his stomach. Bad only huffed in response, crossing his arms. He looked back over at the "water", trying to spot the silver thing that had scared him in the first place. He could see it flashing around the rocks that lined the lakebed. He leaned closer to the shore, crouching next to the water.
He heard footsteps behind him, but before he could react, he felt a fleshy hand push him forwards. He was thrown off balance, and screeched as he toppled over forwards into the water. Bad heard laughter behind him, but was too panicked to notice.
After a few minutes of flailing and confusion, he realized that the water was not deep, only reaching his ankle at most. Bad shakily stood up, trying and failing to flick the wetness out of his sleeves. He then turned to glare at the human, who currently had a shit-eating grin plastered on his face. Bad huffed and flicked his tail from side to side as he walked out of the water and towards the human. The human raised an eyebrow at him as Bad stopped in front of him.
Then, after a moment's hesitation, picked up the human and yeeted him into the lake. The human let out a shout of dismay as he splashed into the shallow pool of water, spluttering as he sat up.
"Hey!" He shouted, standing up and raising a hand to his chest dramatically. "How could you betray me like this?"
Bad only sniffed in response, turning his nose up to the human as it trudged out of the water.
The human stopped in front of him and jabbed a finger into his chest, narrowing his eyes playfully. "I will get my revenge for this."
Bad didn't respond, only watched as the human walked over to where he had set down his pack.
Bad watched as he set up camp, pulling out many of the materials he had used two nights ago. After about a half hour, the human had the tent up and a fire going.
The human sat down by the fire, rummaging around in his pack before pulling out a pot, along with a water bottle and a small sack. He poured some water into the pot before setting it right beside the fire. He then opened the sack and poured some dry oatmeal into a travel mug.
They waited for the water to boil as the sun sank below the horizon.
A comfortable silence settled around the campsite as the human pulled the pot off the fire. He poured the now boiling water into his travel mug, pulling out a spoon from his pack and stirring it.
They sat in silence for a while longer, before the human yawned and put his now empty mug to the side.
"Well, I'm going to bed. Goodnight, mystery person." The human stated before standing up and walking over to the tent, sparing Bad one last glance before disappearing inside.
Bad watched as the tent flap zipped shut, before standing up and walking to one of the trees on the edge of the clearing. He settled down against the tree, curling up and shivering slightly.
Since when is it so cold at night?
He curled in tighter around himself, wishing that he had something to protect himself against the cold night air.
Bad tried to get as comfortable as possible, dreading the long night ahead.
