Part 10
Taehyung POV
Her shocked & agonized expression is stuck in my head like a bubble gum. It won't go away no matter how hard I try to rub it off.
I think I should stop now. She's starting to suspect me anw.
Last night was definitely a close call. I was rummaging through the drawers in Kang sajang's office when I heard footsteps approaching.
Fortunately, one of the windows were unlocked so I could easily escape.
Was it the person who stole Kang sajang's watch? Who was it?
"Taehyung ah, I'm here!" My front door swings open, breaking my train of thoughts.
"Hey." I glance briefly at the person & pretend to focus on the video games I'm playing.
"Are you hungry? I brought you your favorite jjajangmyeon."
"Thanks, but I'm not that hungry." I mutter without moving my gaze from the TV.
"Oh ok. You're not going to see her tonight?"
My fingers stop midway through pressing the buttons on the game controller at the question.
"No." I answer shortly & resume playing.
"Why?"
"I think I'm going to give up." I shrug.
"What?! We've come this far! Have you forgotten the reason why you started all this?! You can't give up now!"
"It's my business, not yours. I don't feel like going through with the plan anymore. Besides, I think I'm this close to being found out." I turn to the person & pinch my forefinger & thumb together.
"What do you mean it's not my business? Of course it is my business! You've dragged me into this! Oh, I know. You like her, don't you? That's why you're saying all this bullshit now."
"What? No! I would never like the daughter of that horrible man!" I quickly deny, although my heart twitches slightly when I say no.
"Liar! You must have fallen for her. Otherwise, why didn't you finish her last night as planned?!"
"I couldn't. Not now. But it definitely isn't because I like her. If you want so desperately to end her life, do it yourself." I look away & push my hair back.
"How could you say that to me? I'm telling you to do it faster for your own good! Do you know how much I'm risking to help you?! I even took a hard slap on my face because you couldn't restrain yourself & stole that watch! Where is it now? Have you sold it? Have you spent the money on your female 'clients'?!"
"That's enough. Get out of my house now!" I slam the game controller hard on the table & yell.
A heavy silence precipitates between the two of us, only the sound of our heavy breaths filling the atmosphere.
"Do you remember how you begged me to help you get your revenge? I didn't want to do it at first, but you convinced me, saying that he should have a taste of his own medicine. He should lose someone important to him, he should feel what you felt. But now, after everything I've done to help you, you want to give up? Fine, do whatever you want. I'm done."
The person slams the front door hard, sending vibration across the walls.
"Fuck. Fuck!!" I scream loudly, letting out all the pent up frustration inside me.
That person is right. I need to stay focus. I have to stop feeling what I feel towards Y/n. She's his daughter, so she should pay for her father's sin as well.
Y/n POV
Morning comes & the first thing I do when I open my eyes is check my phone.
But there's still no missed call or text from Taehyung.
Are we truly over? I sigh heavily & plop my head back down onto the pillow.
"Morning." The door abruptly swings open, causing me to frantically sit up & hide my phone.
"Oh, eonni." I huff in relief when I see Hana walking through the door.
"What's up with that expression? Did you think it was Sajangnim again?" She chuckles as she opens the blinds.
"I'm just trying to be a bit cautious now.." I mutter.
"Isn't it too late already?" She scoffs.
"Hmm? What did you say?" My ears perk up, noticing something's off with her tone.
"Nothing." She replies flatly & walks towards the dressing table.
What's wrong with her? Is she still angry because of the incident yesterday? Well, it's understandable. Abeonim was too harsh on her.
Guilt stabs me right in the chest. She was slapped partly because of my action after all.
I see her pouring me a glass of water & quickly rush to grab the jug from her.
"Eonni, I'll do it myself." I pull the jug towards me.
"That's fine. I've been doing it everyday anw." She insists, not letting go.
"It's ok eonni." My grip tightens.
"I told you it's fine." She grits her teeth & pulls harder, causing the water to spill all over the sleeve of her long-sleeved shirt.
"Omg, I'm so sorry." I frantically grab some tissue, trying to wipe the water off to no avail.
"It's ok." She clenches her jaws & says.
"B-but-"
"Just. Stop." She puts her hands up & backs away, obviously annoyed.
"O-Ok. Sorry." I timidly lower my head & apologize.
She unbuttons her sleeve & folds it up. That's when I see it.
The tiny butterfly tattoo on the inner part of her arm.
"Eonni, that tattoo.." I inadvertently points at it.
Butterfly.. Like the tattoo on Taehyung's chest. But I guess it's a common theme for tattoos.
She looks down at her arm & quickly lowers her sleeve again to cover the tattoo.
"I just got it recently. Please pretend that you didn't see it. Sajangnim will fire me if he finds out. He specifically asked his HR employee to check my body for any marks or tattoos when he hired me. He said he didn't want a bad influence around his precious daughter." She smirks sarcastically.
Her remark shuts me up. My father has hurt her so many times & I feel deeply apologetic towards her.
"I'm sorry.." I bite my lip & say.
"Never mind. Let's just get ready. We're late already." She smiles faintly, but I notice that it doesn't reach her eyes.
I've only made everyone's life more difficult ever since I started my secret relationship with Taehyung. Maybe.. I should just let it end.
The thought of breaking up keeps playing in my head & Taehyung's silence only adds fuel to the fire.
Maybe this is for the best.
I can feel my heart being chipped little by little as I slowly form a decision.
A drop of tear rolls down my cheek & falls onto the notes I'm reading, leaving a blotch of blurred ink on the paper.
"Miss, are you alright?" Jimin bends down & asks, a slight frown furrowing his brows.
"I-I'm fine. A dust got into my eyes, that's all." Embarrassed, I quickly wipe away my tears & reply without looking at him.
"Do you feel unwell? Would you like me to get you anything?" He asks again.
"No, I'm fine, really. Where is Hana ssi btw? I haven't seen her since my last class was over." I abruptly divert his attention & pretend to scan around the library looking for Hana.
"She told me she had something to take care of. Do you want me to find her?"
"Sure. I'll wait for you here."
I sigh in relief once he's left. Finally, I can cry freely without anyone bothering me.
Streams of fresh tears wet my face as I lay my head on the table & check my phone.
Still zilch. Nothing. Nada.
So this truly is the end. Had I known that being in love could be so painful, I would've chosen to not love at all.
I firmly press the power off button on the phone & put it back into my bag.
Goodbye my first love. Thank you for the memories.
Jimin POV
"Where is she?"
I turn my head left & right looking for Hana. I've searched everywhere, but I can't seem to find her.
Has she left the university ground?
I almost give up when I see her shadow standing among the trees in the university garden from the corner of my eye.
"Ah, there she is. Hana ssi-" I raise my hand to get her attention, but then I notice that there's someone else with her.
I swiftly hide myself behind one of the trees & take a peek. She seems to be engaged in a serious conversation with the man as indicated by her knotted brows.
Who is he?
His face is invisible since his back is facing me.
Suddenly, the man pulls Hana into his embrace & kisses her square on the lips.
Feeling like I've invaded her privacy, I avert my gaze for a minute. When I look back at them, the man is motioning to leave & I catch a glimpse of his side profile.
Wait.. That man..
Taehyung POV
I impatiently pace back & forth, waiting for her to come to our meeting spot.
She left me on read, so I don't know whether she's coming or not. All I can do now is wait.
2:54 PM. She's late. Or is she not going to come at all?
I stretch my neck towards the direction of the library where she usually is at this hour, yet I see no sign of her.
Fuck, I shouldn't have said those things to her last night. She must be very angry.
"Arghh!" I push my hair back in regret & frustration.
"What do you want?" Her sudden voice startles me, making me almost jump in surprise.
I turn around & there she is, with her arms folding defensively across her chest. My accomplice, my lover.
"Hana ya, you came."
Flashback, Hana POV
"Hana ssi, this is the overdue bill for your mother's treatment. Please make a payment by the end of this week, otherwise we will have to discharge her." The nurse said disinterestedly as she handed me a white envelope.
"Could you please give me some grace period? I promise I'll pay it by the end of the month." I urgently pleaded.
"I'm sorry but we can't do that. We've been quite lenient with your late payments, but this time we can't tolerate it anymore. So please don't forget to make a payment before Friday." The nurse nodded at me coldly & walked away.
I clenched the envelope in my hand & looked to my right, at my sleeping mother. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, so she couldn't function well on her own. Since I was her only family & we couldn't afford a stay-home nurse, she'd been staying in the hospital ever since she had difficulty moving.
I pulled out my phone & checked the balance in my bank account.
"930,000 won. It can barely pay for the hospital fee. Huh.. what do I do now?" I sighed heavily & turned to look at her again.
Sometimes, I wish that she would stop breathing in her sleep & make my life easier. It was a cruel thought, but I just couldn't stand it anymore.
Never in my life had I ever felt happy, because my loser of a father gambled everything we had & then drank himself to death, leaving nothing but a huge amount of debt. I thought my life would be much better after I got the job as Kang sajangnim's daughter's assistant, but then my mother was diagnosed with the disease & we were back to our old miserable life again.
I heavily walked out of the hospital room towards the garden & sat on one of the empty benches. The sky was a vibrant shade of orange, dusk was falling, no one was around. Tears of frustration rolled out of my tired eyes, drenching my face.
"Who did you lose?" A deep foreign voice made me lift my head up.
A handsome young man with tattoos covering half of his neck was staring at me from the bench right across.
"Are you talking to me?" I wiped away my tears & asked in confusion.
"Yeah. There's no one else here, right?" He smirked.
Damn, he's gorgeous.
"I haven't lost anyone, but I wish I had. God, I'm such a terrible daughter." I chuckled sarcastically & sniffed.
"What's your story?" He leaned forward & placed both elbows on his knees.
"You sure you want to know?"
"Ehm hm. Tell me." He nodded encouragingly.
Maybe it was because no one had ever cared to listen to me before, his simple act of concern had touched my heart, opening up the floodgate that had been holding in all my torment.
So I told him everything, even things that I'd never told anyone before. My darkest thoughts, my deepest fear. Everything bursted out of me without restrain.
"Holy shit. You've had it rough." He commented at the end of my rant.
"Yeah, kinda. What about you? What brings you here?" I asked in return.
"Oh, just visiting someone." He shrugged.
Awkward silence stretched between us afterwards, making me think that I'd probably talked too much. He was a stranger after all. Maybe he hadn't expected that I would tell him such a lengthy story.
"Well, alright then. Thanks for listening to me. I have to go now. Good bye." I abruptly stood up & motioned to leave.
"Wait!" He suddenly exclaimed & rise from his seat as well.
"Yes?"
"Uhm.. Would you like to have a drink with me?" He put both hands in his jeans pockets & sheepishly asked.
Stunned by his invitation, I stared at him for a long moment.
"It's ok if you feel uncomfortable. I mean, you don't know me. Sorry for being too forward." Sensing my silence, he quickly added.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Kim Taehyung. You?"
"Jang Hana. Well, Kim Taehyung, now that I know who you are, let's get that drink." I smiled at him.
The casual drink that night turned into a deep long conversation. Ever since then, I was hooked.
Everything about him fascinated me, his smooth voice, his godly beauty, the tattoos covering his skin, his mysterious attitude.
I couldn't believe that someone like him would be interested in me. I felt like I was flying on cloud nine. But soon, insecurities began to lurk their ugly heads out.
"Taehyung ah, I'm here-" I cheerfully called out & stepped into his workplace.
My smile instantly curved downwards into a scowl when I saw him hovering over a half-naked female.
"Oh, you're here. Give me a minute. I'm almost done." He replied without taking his eyes off the woman's left breast.
My heart burnt with jealousy, but I could do nothing about it because I had no right to. I wasn't even his girl friend. So, I could only swallow my agony & wait for him quietly.
"There you go." He smiled in satisfaction once he was done.
"Thanks Taehyung ah. It's awesome." The woman checked herself in the mirror & then pulled him into a hug.
Taehyung's eyes twinkled, seemingly enjoying the display of affection.
I stared at the stunning lady with her provocative outfit & sexy body, & then down at my flat chest & boring work clothes.
No wonder he's never looked at me like that.
"Sorry, that took longer than expected. She decided to change the design at the last minute." He approached me after she'd left.
"That's ok. I brought you your favorite jjajjangmyeon." I forced out a smile & handed him the takeout box.
"Woah, you came right on time. I was starving. Thanks." He ruffled my hair, sending butterflies soaring inside.
His smile calmed my jealousy a little, but it was still persistently there. I wanted him to look at me with the same intensity as when he looked at his female clients.
"Taehyung ah.." I hesitantly spoke up,
"Yeah?" He asked through a mouthful of noodles.
"I want to get a tattoo."
He coughed loudly, choked by the noodles.
"Why would you want a tattoo? Didn't you tell me that your boss forbade you to have any markings or piercings on your body?"
"He did, but I don't give a shit anymore. It's my body, I can do whatever I want with it. So, can you help me?"
"Well, yeah, sure. Where do you want it? What type of design do you want?"
I tried to think of something meaningful, but couldn't think of any. Then, I remembered the half butterfly tattoo on his chest that I accidentally saw once when he was changing his shirt.
"I want a half butterfly tattoo just like yours here on my right inner arm."
He went quiet, jaws clenched, eyes stony.
Shit, did I step over the line?
"Not that one. Pick another design." He coldly said & looked away.
"O-Ok. Well, any butterfly design then, coz I love butterflies." I lied.
"Alright." His smile was back in a snap.
I enjoyed every second of his full attention on me. He was so close that I could smell his minty smoky scent. His fluffy hair only inches away, inciting an irresistible itch in me to touch it.
"Done. Do you like it?" He suddenly raised his head, startling me out of my daze.
I looked down at the intricate black butterfly that he had inked on my inner arm & gasped.
"Wow, it's beautiful. Thank you."
"I'm glad you like it." He grinned & tidied up his tools.
The new tattoo symbolized his presence in me, like a part of him was going to be with me forever now. That gave me a shot of courage & the question blurted out of my lips before I could stop it.
"Would you be my boy friend?"
His movement stopped for a brief second before he slowly turned towards me.
"You want me to be your boy friend?" His eyes widened in what seemed like disbelief.
He's going to reject me.
"It's fine if you don't want to." I lowered my gaze & muttered as my confidence crumbled.
"Look at me." He pinched my chin & lifted my face up.
His eyes stared deep into mine, making my stomach churn into a tight knot.
"I would love to be your boy friend." He gently caressed my cheek with the back of his fingers.
"Really?" My lips trembled in happiness.
"Yes, girl friend." He chuckled & bopped my nose.
I was beyond ecstatic. I no longer dreaded waking up & facing reality, because now my life was sweet like honey due to his presence. All the stress & humiliation I experienced at work melted away as soon as I saw him.
But just when I thought that I finally was tasting heaven, a month later he told me his true intention & dragged me back to hell.
"Hana ya.." He muttered as he played with my hair.
"Hm?" I answered lazily, head lying on his bare chest.
"Do you trust me?"
"Of course. Why?" I answered without hesitation.
"Do you want to know why I was at the hospital that day I met you?"
"Why are you suddenly asking me that?" I sat up & faced him, a bad omen rising in my gut.
"Because I need your help." He looked dead serious, not a hint of his usual playfulness.
"Help with what?"
"Just listen to me first.."
And then, he told me his story.
My jaw dropped lower & lower as his story progressed. When the story ended, my sweet dream ended with it as well.
"S-So you approached me on purpose because you knew that I work for Kang sajangnim?"
"I wasn't sure at first, but you looked familiar so I struck a conversation with you that day at the hospital. And my guess turned out to be right." He explained.
"Omg.. Here I am stupidly thinking that you really like me, when in fact you just want to use me to get your revenge! No wonder you often asked about him & his daughter." I pushed him hard, my heart crushed into a million pieces.
"Wait, Hana ya. Please listen to me." He grabbed my arm & pleaded.
"There's nothing else to talk about between us! I thought you were a nice person, but apparently you're just a douchebag like any other guy! I'm so fucking stupid! I-" I cried as I struggled to escape from his grip.
"I love you!" He exclaimed, shutting me up in an instant.
"W-What?"
"I admit. Initially, I was only trying to use you to get to Kang sajang, but I genuinely fell for you as I got to know you better. That's why I'm coming clean to you now, because I want to be honest with you." He squeezed my hands, his eyes inundated with tenderness & guilt.
I stood there frozen, while myriads of thoughts ran through my head.
Does he truly love me? Or is he only saying that so that I agree to help him? What if he's lying? Should I go? Or should I stay?
"Hana ya, I told you why I want revenge. If you were me, wouldn't you do anything to punish him? Don't you think that he needs to feel the same pain as I do, lose someone precious to him as I do? Please help me, you're the only one I can trust & lean on." He slowly pulled me into a hug & I didn't reject him this time.
He's right. Kang sajangnim is a monster. He needs to be punished. Besides, I don't want to lose him. He's the only good thing in my life.
"Ok, I will help you." I muttered into his chest.
"You will? Really?" He pushed me slightly away & searched my face, his eyes lighting up in relief & excitement.
"Yes, but promise me that you will always be honest with me. No more lies."
"I promise. Thank you Hana ya." He kissed my hands & pulled me back into his embrace.
I will do anything for you Taehyung ah, as long as you love me.
Taehyung POV
Guilt pierced through the center of my chest as I caressed her hair.
I love you.
I couldn't believe I said that just to get her on my side.
Love.
I didn't think that I would ever experience such emotion. Well, not with her obviously.
I did like her, but "Love" was just too strong of a word to describe what I was feeling towards her.
I'm sorry Hana ya. I promise that this is the only lie that I'll ever tell you.
Little did I know that I would lie straight to her face so many times in the near future.
