Chapter One
Abby fixed the collar of her button up blouse. She was running late for dinner at the country club with her parents and Ben. It was her least favourite place to go out but her mother had insisted. The place was always so busy, with people who thought they were important, people like her mother.
"I owe you a chocolate bar," Clarissa, her best friend, said. She had a sexy, strapless black dress on and five inch heels.
"Where are you going?" Abby asked, glancing her over.
"On a date," Clarissa sang as she danced around the room sprayed perfume all over her neck.
"With Mark?"
"No, Samuel."
Abby shook her head. She couldn't keep up with Clarissa's dating life. "What happened to Mark?"
"He was boring."
"Uh huh." Abby applied a coat of natural coloured lipstick, looking at Clarissa in the mirror. "Why do you owe me a chocolate bar again?"
"Because I bet you that Ben was gay and now that he's kissed you—"
"Oh please, it was barely a peck on the lips." Abby's cheeks flushed.
"Did you enjoy it?" Clarissa asked, leaning over Abby's shoulder to apply yet another coat of mascara.
"I didn't dislike it I guess."
"It's been over a year of dating and he's never asked you to have sex?" Clarissa stopped coating her eye lashes for a moment.
"He's busy, always working."
"No guy is too busy for that."
"I may have told him I want to wait until marriage," Abby put on her shoes, turning away from Clarissa.
"Are you serious?"
Abby shrugged.
"But is it true? Will you try once you're married?" Clarissa asked.
Abby walked around, searching for her keys and purse to leave. "You know I can't."
"Abby..." Clarissa followed her. "You can't avoid this forever."
"Yes I can."
"You're twenty-nine already. You're almost done your twenties."
"So?"
"So you can't act like you're still a teenager, even if you look it."
Abby found her keys finally and went to the door. "Let's not talk about this anymore."
Clarissa gave her a sympathetic look. "I think with the right guy it will work. I really do. You don't know unless—"
"Of course you think that," Abby snapped, "it's easy for you." She opened the door but Clarissa stopped her, grabbing the door before it opened all the way.
"What's that supposed to mean?" she said to Abby.
"Nothing," Abby relented. "Sorry. That's not what I meant"
Clarissa let go of the door. "I just don't want to see you sell yourself short. You're just scared and you've waited way too long. I know this great gynecologist—"
"No," Abby shook her head. "No more doctors."
"Your doctor is terrible, he's not even a gynecologist. He's just a creep."
"It's not him. It's me. I'm defective."
"You're not. There's nothing wrong with you. The doctor even said so."
"I have to go." Abby stepped out of the apartment, waving bye to Clarissa.
"Tell Ben!" She called after her. "If he loves you he'll stick around to figure this out with you."
"Bye!" Abby closed the door behind her.
