Chapter 31

The other man went into the kitchen and brought out a bottle. He doused the floor with an odourless liquid.

"Wait!" We all looked at Tino.

"Shouldn't you find the girl first? I mean they were all involved in this."

Barry took a minute to think about it, placing his hand on his hip.

"It wouldn't be the true, revenge you want if she's not here." Tino approached Barry slowly.

"You know, you have a point," Barry agreed.

"Yes, can you imagine burning all of them at once? They'd scream in unison as they went up in smoke," Tino added. I thought he was trying to buy us time. Barry took a while to consider what Tino was saying.

"You have proven your alliance. Let's wait, find Dahlia" He sent out Ace with the flair.

Unexpectedly, Devin broke free from his ropes. He charged at the one man that was remaining. He dropped the bottle. Its contents crept across the floor.

I used the blade Tino had given me to cut myself free. It took a minute but I finally did.

Tino pushed Barry backwards. He doubled back.

The man was able to get Devin pinned to the ground. Devin must have been exhausted by now.

He punched him twice. I couldn't let him get in a third one in. I pounced on his back. Jammed the blade into his shoulder. He reeled backwards. I flew off him, landing hard on my back. The air was knocked out of my lungs. I scuffled to a far wall.

Tino was actually on our side. Tino punched Barry in the gut. Then dodged Barry's attack. Tino forced him up against a wall. Barry pushed him back with his knee. Tino fell back onto one of the chair. Barry raised his leg to kick him. Tino caught his leg before it struck his chest. He twisted the leg to gain the upper hand. Barry's stance wavered enough for him to push him off.

Devin managed to knock out the other man with the glass bottle. He charged at Barry, this time landing a solid punch. Tino kicked Barry in his side and he fell hard on the floor. He didn't shift, but Devin kept kicking his head. Tino pulled Devin away from him.

I got up slowly. I walked over to look at Barry. He wasn't moving. Could it actually be over?

Then two men barged in from outside. They were the two that had gone out at the first sound of shots being fired not so long ago. Devin pushed me back to stand behind them, next to Barry's body.

Devin was ready to throw punches. Tino didn't hesitate to pull out his gun and shoot one of the men in the head. Before they could get a shot in. The shot was deafening. Devin managed to disarm the other guy. He took the broken bottle from before and jammed it into the man's side. Once. Twice. Till he fell. Tino walked up beside him and shot the man in his head. Now was it was really over?

A rough hand grabbed my neck. I was too distracted to notice Barry had gotten up. The cold metal of his gun was pressed against my temple.

Devin saw this. He was a feral cat, ready to strike. He charged toward us but stopped when Barry fired a warning shot through the ceiling. The particles fell onto my head.

"Don't even think about it," Barry warned.

Devin tensed. Was this it for me?

"Don't do this Barry!" Devin was pleading.

"Do what?! Huh? You and your father ruined me!"

"Barry, don't." Tino chimed in.

"Don't you fucking speak!" Barry fired what I thought was another warning shot. Tino staggered backwards. Shock marked on his face. He gripped his stomach. Blood spewed from his wound then he collapsed.

Devin spared a glance at his old friend who was now on the ground desperately trying to stop himself from bleeding out.

Devin took a half step towards me. Barry aimed the gun at my temple again. Devin stopped. Arms stretched out, silently pleading. I started to feel numb. We had survived the last few days of torture for it to boil down to this moment. At least Dahlia was ok, was all I could think. All of this was for her.

"I want you to be ruined too, Devin. Look at what you did to me!" He spat. "Look at what your father did!"

"Look I don't know what my father did. I was just tryna save my family man." Devin's voice came out cracked and hoarse. "Take me! Kill me!" Devin begged. He took another step.

"Don't you fucking move! It's over!"

If Devin had a gun on him he would have probably used it by now. I squeezed my eyes shut preparing for the end.

"It's over," was the last thing Barry said before two shots echoed through the house. I didn't feel anything. I didn't know where they came from. Barry's grip loosened as he fell to the floor. He clutched his leg. Someone had shot him from behind.

I turned to see Dahlia standing in the doorway. She was dishevelled. Devin rushed over to me and kicked the gun away from Barry. Then he hugged me. I couldn't recall the last time we actually embraced each other.

"Devin..." Tino still clutched his stomach. We rushed over to him, as his eyes fluttered shut. No.

Despite the fact that I had distrusted him, he had helped us in the end. He shouldn't go out like that. Devin bowed his head as if silently grieving at his friend's death.

Barry grunted loudly bringing our attention to Dahlia kicking him repeatedly in his back. When she grew tired of kicking she aimed at Barry's head.

"Devin." I nodded my head towards Dahlia. She was going to kill him. Devin went over to her. That's when I noticed he had a slight limp to the left and he gripped his side.

Devin touched her elbow. "Dahls we should go."

Dahlia shook her head with aggression. "No, I have to kill him. It will never end. I have to kill him." She sounded like she was crying. Dahlia never cried.

"Dahlia, it's not worth it," Devin responded.

" I already shot his bitch wife, why should he get off scot-free?"

"Because they already took enough from us, don't let him take away everything that makes us who we are" I answered.

Tears were streaming down her face. Dahlia, like Devin, rarely showed emotion but tonight was the exception.

"Every night, I wished he was dead! And now I can finally make sure of it," she resolved, pointing the gun at him.

Barry said nothing. He laid there as if admitting defeat. She slowly squeezed the trigger, but no bullets were fired. She squeezed again, still nothing. She squeezed several times more. It was empty.

Barry let out a breath.

Devin took the gun from her after all her attempts failed. He told me to take her outside but I hesitated. I didn't want to leave him alone.

As we turned to leave, Tino groaned. He's alive. Devin barked at me to go. I slowly but reluctantly took Dahlia's hand and led her outside.  The last thing I heard was Barry's sinister laugh. Maybe he should die.

The cold night wind was like tiny shards of glass to my bare skin. I shivered beside my sister. She rested some of her weight on me. Possibly numb from all that happened in the last four days.

It was odd that so many shots were fired but no police had shown up. Surely someone had heard. But that's what it was like in this part of the town. No one truly cared and they never stuck their noses where it didn't belong. Teachers had suspected how we were being treated at Barry's but no one spoke up.

Dahlia and I waited by the gate for Devin and Tino to walkout.

A car drove up next to us. I instinctively pushed Dahlia to stand behind me. The car was decorated with bullet holes. The window rolled down. The man inside spoke.

"No reason to be alarmed. I'm with your asshole brother. He said ya'll should come with me."

"No fucking way," I responded.

"Alright, suit yourself." He wound up the window and drove off. I didn't get to see his face.

"What's taking so long?" I questioned, turning my attention back to the house.

As I spoke two shots were fired from inside the house. We saw the flashes of light through one of the windows. Before I could think the worse, Devin stumbled out with Tino slumped onto his side. He was barely able to walk.

I wanted to ask. But I wasn't ready to know. The windows started to emit smoke.  Then we could see the flames through the living room window. Devin and Tino joined us at the entrance.

Devin was looking around. I suppose for the guy that just drove off.

"He left," I said.

He only shook his head. "We need to get fuck out of here."

Tino pulled out a set of keys and barely pointed to a vehicle down the road. We all limped towards the black Honda. I had both siblings on either side. I sighed heavily as we clambered into the car. Devin in the driver's seat, Tino in front and Dahlia and I in the back. Devin started the engine and pulled out. I looked back at the street. It was quiet. No one came out to help. We had survived the worst of it.

Dahlia leaned against my shoulder and closed her eyes. Maybe, it's finally over.
