Chapter 12
I sat there for what felt like hours as I watched Fitz and Juno talk. Amid my worry for my brother's life, I wondered what Juno was doing there.
The camera was angled so that I saw the sides of each of their faces. Juno's lion tattoo roared at me each time he moved his head. It was difficult to make out what they were saying.
It didn't make sense, Juno was Gills' lap dog, what would Juno be doing here? Especially if Gills was the one who sent us here.
Did he know we were here?
I looked around to see if I could spot anything or anyone out of the ordinary. The night was quiet apart from the black car that was now parked across the street from Fitz's house. Good going Darius, you were so focussed on Devin, you didn't even see Juno arrive. I mentally kicked myself.
It was still pretty interesting that Juno of all people turned up. He was looking for us, he asked Tino to report to him.
Did Tino have anything to do with Juno being here? Was Juno double-crossing Gills doing business with an enemy?
"What the fuck is going on?" I asked myself as the questions bombarded my mind.
I wondered if Devin was still inside the room. It could have had a window or something that he climbed out of and was on his way back to the car.
But I knew that was unlikely. What is behind the door?
I continued to watch as the men talked. I could sense an uneasiness from just watching them.
They both shifted as the other one shifted. Tensions rose as Juno reached for his waist as Fitz reached down to open a drawer. I started to panic, it wasn't just any drawer.
It was the drawer that Devin took the black sack from. Great going, Devin! Everything seemed to slow down as Fitz opened the draw. His mouth gaped as he realized that it was empty.
He closed it and opened it again; may be thinking that it would magically appear. And when it didn't he stood up suddenly.
Juno did too, both of them on high alert for each other.
I imagined Juno being confused as to why he wasn't getting what he came for. Fitz seemed puzzled as well, I'm sure he was thinking that he put whatever the black sack in that drawer.
He started to search in other drawers. When he came up empty, Juno drew his gun.
Fitz held his hands in the air and continued to talk seemingly trying to talk him down. After a few exchanges, Juno lowered the gun.
Fitz continued to search the room. Then it occurred to me that he might check the safe and he'd find the key missing.
Fitz knew he was robbed. He's not an idiot. He'd probably have a spare key as Devin had taken the other.
He'd find Devin with the black sack of God knows what, and he'd kill him. Devin would try but he couldn't fight his way out of this one with a knife and top fighting skills. Especially not against Fitz and Juno.
I had to do something. I reached for the revolver that was beside my leg. I had to think quickly.
What are you going to do Darius? Run in there guns blazing? No that's stupid.
I needed a distraction. I hopped over into the driver's seat so I started the car. It came alive with a silent hum and a gentle chuckle. I whipped it around and headed toward the house. I stopped just short of it and got out.
Standing, where the car door would block me, I fired a couple rounds as close as possible to the roof of the house. The sounds of gunshots ripped through the silent night.
It would have woken up the neighbourhood.
Fitz would hear and think that the robber was outside or somewhere else in the house engaging in a shootout.
A couple of his security came rushing out as I jumped back inside the vehicle. They ran down the street towards me.
By the time they could aim and fire I was almost a block away. They missed by miles. I sped down to where Devin and I had agreed to meet.
They would follow the car thinking I was the thief so I'd have to find a way to ditch it. Not to mention the police response team would be there in minutes. I had to act fast.
I had no time to check the cameras or even if Devin got out. I could hear engines roaring behind but no sirens, yet.
Devin and I had told Tino that we'd go back to the warehouse if anything went wrong but we made our own backup plans.
No one could truly be trusted, so we decided to go meet up at the old bridge over the waterfront. Most people used the new one. The one that was finished about a year ago. It was made for easier access into the city centre because the old one was a good distance off.
I've been driving since I could see over the steering wheel so this wasn't new. Devin learned from our father, but I didn't get the chance to learn from him. I was taught by Devin. We'd often go for joy rides with some of Devin's old friends.
But I've never been in this kind of too fast too furious situation, where I was going 90 in a neighbourhood, driving to save my life.
They were catching up to me. I knew I couldn't lose them. I had to be smart. I made a sharp right turn and pulled into the first empty driveway I could find.
Switched off the lights and ducked below the steering. I waited a bit until the sounds of their engines passed and faded. Then I waited a little longer.
They could be ghosting me just as I was doing them. I checked the laptop to see if I could spot Devin, I didn't find him, I only saw a few of Fitz' men running around on the phone I guess trying to track me.
When I thought the coast was clear I started up the engine again; this time driving as slowly as possible. I wasn't sure where exactly I was. I'd made several frantic turns to getaway.
Then I heard the sirens. They'd be coming from the new bridge so I knew to go in the opposite direction. I drove until I saw a familiar street. But it was still too close to Fitz' house so I continued along. I drove along the road for a few minutes, trying to find another way to our meeting spot.
Then, someone slammed on the passenger door banging on it for me to open it. I physically jumped in the seat and my heart rate sped up rapidly. The person seemed to appear out of thin air wearing a heavy black hoodie.
I was about to speed off when the person removed the hood and I saw that it was Devin. I unlocked the door and he jumped in. His clothes were soaked, his hair glistened with murky river water and the bag he carried was dripping.
"What the-" I began to say.
"Drive! Now!" He commanded and I drove easily down the road along the waterfront towards the old bridge.
We had ditched the along the road and walked down to the bridge.
We had emptied it of all we had, computer, and guns. Devin wiped it down to get rid of possible fingerprints. We were supposed to return it to Tino, but that wasn't our main concern; Dahlia was.
Fitz probably still had connections in the force and could easily call in a favour to from any one of his old buddies to identify the vehicle and its owner. I doubt it would be traced back to Tino though. He was smarter than that.
At the bridge, the water was still and serene below us, with only the moonlight illuminating it. We couldn't stay topside, because they might come searching for us. If we walked along the bridge, we'd leave ourselves exposed.
It was doubtful but we still had to be careful. Devin went over the rust guard rails, swinging the duffel over his shoulder. He motion for me to climb over. I did. We were now standing on a narrow extension od the road that projected beyond the rails.
Then he stooped down and grabbed the lip of a four-inch drain pipe that ran along the road. He displaced his feet so he was hanging from it.
From there it was about a three-foot drop onto the narrow metal beam below. With only the light from the moon and the weight of the bag on his shoulder, he let go landing imperfectly; almost toppling over into the water.
"Your turn," he called to me. I tried to copy exactly what he did, but my leg slipped over the edge and he had to grab my elbow to stop me from falling in.
When I steadied my balance, he let go of me. He shivered as the chilled breeze flowed around us. He was probably cold from being in the water twice. He ducked under another beam and I followed. Now we were fully under the bridge.
No one would find us unless they did as we did to get here. Devin moved to sit on the beam and I wondered why we were wasting time. Still, he must just need to take a breather. Breaking and entering must really take a toll on you. We sat down on the rusted metal with our legs hanging over the edge. He removed the bag from his shoulder then turned to me.
"What the fuck just happened?" Devin asked if he had watched it all happen from the sidelines.
"We just stole from one of the most lethal men in town and didn't die."
Devin stared over the water and started to chuckle, a low rumble in the depths of his voice. That was a sound I hadn't heard in weeks. There wasn't much to laugh about in our situation. I wasn't sure what there was to laugh about now, as we both almost could have died tonight. I looked at him, wide eyes as if he'd grown a second head. He saw my expression and the chuckle soon turned into laughter. I was more confused than ever. What was so funny? Delerium was starting to set in, probably from the lack of sleep. He continued to laugh and held his stomach.
"Yo, this shit you only see in movies!" he said wiping his eyes. He was in disbelief as much as I was, but I didn't see the humour in any of it.
"Yea. How did you get out?"
"You Darius. It was you." I sighed in contentment. For once, I was able to do what I should be doing, watching his back. When I didn't respond, he continued.
"You won't believe what I found in that room."
"What?" I asked as he grabbed the duffel bag and unzipped it.
"Those mo-fos probably thought we'd die tonight," Devin stated opening the bag for me to see.
I stared down in the bag in disbelief. The money! It was there; but how? When? Devin somehow heard my unasked questions.
He started to tell me that the small room he went into was the actual safe. The walls were lined with shelves of cash.
I could only imagine how shocked he was. He said he started to grab as much as he could before he started to hear yelling from the office. Then, seconds later gunshots were fired.
It didn't take him long to realize that I'd fired the shots. Since it was a vault, there were no windows to shimmy out of.
Everyone was chasing me, the back of the house was clear and he came out the way he went in, undetected.
He had to swim for almost 5 minutes, with the weight of the money on his shoulders. No doubt he was tired. He got out of the water where we were supposed to meet up. And when I didn't show up he had to trek through other people's yards until he found me.
"Yo, it was like some James Bond shi-" I started to say to match his excitement before he covered my mouth. I grabbed at his wrist.
"Wha-"
"Shhh," he said putting his fingers to his lips. What was his problem? Then he reached for the revolver that was secured in the waist of my pants.
He motioned for us to get up. I slowly eased myself up, careful to keep my balance. Then I saw it. Out in the distance, a car was driving up from the way we came.
The new bridge was in the opposite direction, no one used the old bridge anymore. We had to assume that the car that was coming must be some of Fitz' men; that they were looking for us.
I got up, steadying myself on the narrow beam. The car was moving slowly but we had to act fast.
"We have to make it to the other end of the bridge," Devin said, the cheerfulness of a few minutes ago long gone.
"But they'll see us," I was thinking of what would happen if we went topside.
"Not if we stay underneath." I pulled the flashlight from my pocket with shaky hands.
"No, No flashlight." I looked over to where we were supposed to go.
The other end of the beige descended into darkness. It could have gone on forever for all I knew. The rusty bridge itself cast a shadow over us. I looked below us at the still icy water that still had my brother shivering slightly.
"Here I'll go first," Devin said taking the lead. He moved cautiously ahead and I did my best to follow. The car was now only several meters away and we weren't even halfway to the other end.
"We have to move quicker," he said balancing along the beam. Devin had the grace of a tight rope walker, moving steadily and easily even in the dead of night. I, on the other hand, felt like a toddler learning to walk, constantly wobbling back and forth.
The car was now on the bridge. The low hum of the engine shut off and the car doors open and shut.
"If those bastards wanna escape, they're gonna run this way," a rusty voice said.
"Do we even know who they are?" said another man, with a softer tone.
"Don't fucking matter, they stole from the boss, we see them, we kill them."
I swallowed a lump that had developed in my throat. Devin looked down at me.
He knew the thoughts that were rolling through my mind. He knew because the same ones were probably on his mind. If we get caught, we die and Dahlia dies.
"Let's keep moving," he whispered.
We continued under the bridge undetected. I did my best to follow Devin as quickly as possible, despite my heart, hammering in my chest. We were more than halfway there when Devin stopped suddenly.
"What? We have to move."
"This beam, it's out of place and not secure, it'll creek if we step on it." He resolved.
"What are we going to do? We can't turn back." I took two deep breaths to try to calm down.
Devin looked to his left. "We have to jump"
He wanted us to jump from one narrow beam to another that was at least a five-foot jump across.
"No fucking way, I can barely see! There's no way!"
"Darius listen we don't have a choice. It's either risk it or we die. Now when you jump, be sure to bend your knees as low as possible when you land so you won't fall"
"Easy for you to say" I whispered. He handed me the bag and turned toward the next beam.
After a deep breath, he leaped forward and landed squarely on the beam, barely making a sound. He motioned for me to toss the bag of money to him. I swung it forward, the momentum almost making me lose my balance. He caught it by the handle.
"Now your turn." I tried to do as he said. My eyes were adjusted well enough to the dark but it was still hard to focus on the beam.
I took another deep breath and was ready to leap until I saw flashlights shining over the water. Then they disappeared.
"Shit. Hurry up!" Devin rushed. As I took another breath and leaped forward I saw the flashlights again.
I lost my footing as I leaped and my forward leg fell short of the beam.
I couldn't hold back a yelp as I grabbed at the beam. I caught the edge of it, and narrowly missed smacking my face on the edge of it.
"The fuck was that?" the rusty voice said.
"Fuck they heard you! Get up! Get the fuck up!" Devin said, grabbing at my shoulders to yank me up on to the beam. He kept reminding me that if we don't move, we're dead.
