9. Blue light

The daughter was telling the mother something in the subway. The former sitting, the latter standing. The former passionate, the latter as if the issue had nothing to do with her. In fact, she didn't say a word and it was hard for her to look at her daughter while she was listening (if she was). Her expression showed desire for her daughter to end; she didn't utter a single syllable.
That night, the daughter (named Aurora) was abducted by aliens while walking her dog Chuski. It wasn't a typical abduction. Hot tentacles surrounded her body until covering the last inch. She was immobilized. Only blinking could she express her disagreement with the unusual kidnapping. Chuski barked vehemently.
Seconds later, Aurora experienced losing consciousness several times in a row. And not necessarily having awakened from each one. As if she were going through the cement down through several floors of an underground parking lot. Yes, Aurora thought, it's an adequate analogy.
Everything was open, flat, silver, cold. She was naked, horror! She covered her intimate parts as she could while looking around. There was no one. Or nothing. An infinite esplanade extended in all directions. The immensity overwhelmed her. It made her feel what she was: small. Far away, there seemed to be the same metal esplanade, but upright. And so in all directions. She was in a gigantic iron box. Not at all, the sun shone above. She didn't know if it was the same sun she was familiar with. Soon she decided it wasn't. This one was blue. Besides, the sunrays she knew warmed; these cooled.
Her entire being withdrew as she turned her gaze towards her interior. It was hollow. There was no love. There were no traces of affection or other emotions that resembled it. No one had taken care of her. Never. She had grown like a shell. The blue sun descended and filled her.
The case had its place in the crimes' section for a long time. How the mother died became a headache for the police investigation, originating all sorts of conspiracy and paranormal theories in certain opinion circles. It was never known. The only clue forensics found was that the body was several degrees colder than it should be; even some internal organs were close to freezing... in the middle of June. The woman was sitting on the couch, with the television on. There were no signs of illness, sudden death, accident or violence.
The only person who was living with her, and who had been present at the time of death, was her daughter. Therefore, the only suspect. But there was no way to connect her to the crime. Not even fingerprints of the daughter were found on the mother's body or clothing.
Aurora became fond of science fiction novels. At night, so that her uncles wouldn't tell her to turn off the light and sleep, she would open the palm of her hand and generate that little icy ball of blue light. She would read with her tireless friend all night long.
